Today on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast we go back 119 years and introduce you to a story by an author we have never featured on the podcast before. The Man Who Did Things Twice and a second story by Don Mark Lemon, The Spider and the Fly. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Don Mark Lemon was born in Arizona in September 1877, he wrote 15 short stories and 1 novel, The Scarlet Planet, which was published in 1930.His first published short story, Doctor Goldman, can be found in the December 1900 issue of The Black Cat which launched in 1895. The Black Cat sold for five cents and encouraged amateur writers to submit stories. As the story goes the Jack London novel The Call of the Wild might never have been written if not for The Black Cat. London wasn't having success as a writer and was about to give up but then he sold a story, A Thousand Deaths, to The Black Cat in 1899 and The Call of the Wild was published four years later! Never give up, Never Surrender!!The first Don Mark Lemon story on the podcast won a $100 prize, which would be worth about $3,500 today, and appeared in the June 1905 issue of The Black Cat on page 39, The Man Who Did Things Twice by Don Mark Lemon…Our second story by Don Mark Lemon was published in The Thrill Book, a short lived publication which began and ceased publication in 1919. Kurt Brown hails from Sacramento, California, where his family joined the Church when he was young. He played two years of college basketball, studied Finance and Economics at Brigham Young University, and dropped out senior year to go to Wall Street, where he was a trader on the New York Stock Exchange and the co-manager of an investment fund for 13 years. He started his own firm, TownSquare Capital, in 2018 and sold it to a larger, national firm (Orion) in 2022. In the Church, his callings have included single adult ward bishop, Young Men president, scoutmaster, Gospel Doctrine teacher, elders quorum president, and ward clerk. He served in the Canada Halifax mission. Kurt and his wife, Katie, have been married 16 years and have four children: one biological son, an adopted daughter, and two special-needs foster children they adopted. Kurt and Katie have been called to serve as the mission leaders of the Washington Tacoma Mission starting July 2023. Kurt's faith journey and ending up back in Utah. 19:00 Coming back to Utah, getting his life back in order, got married at 35. 21:30 Kurt helped create a mid singles ward in Provo, Utah and was the bishop of that ward. He talks about what he did to start the ward. 30:00 Establishing positive culture at church. They did this by creating a space that felt like the savior was present. The first weeks they had 120 people and within 5 months they had 500 people attending. 33:30 The experience that people need at church is to feel warm and welcomed. Every Sunday after sacrament meeting they would break into visitors meeting. Kurt shares what they would share with people in those meetings. 36:30 From the very first visitor's meeting they established the culture. Everyone got vulnerable, shared their stories. Every single meeting was focused on helping people feel hope and the holy ghost. 37:50 There is something powerful about sharing our stories. When hearing people's stories we need to have as much compassion as the savior would. 40:00 You aren't the gatekeeper. You are the welcoming committee. 41:30 In three years they never assigned a topic for sacrament meeting. 42:15 Kurt constantly invited people to come see him and unload their pain on him. 43:20 Kurt shares an experience with President Eyring. President Eyring taught that while we are a handbook heavy church, the handbook is not what we are doing. It's about love, not a checklist from the handbook. 45:40 After serving as bishop, Kurt has been able to see people in a completely different way. He is no longer a harsh judge. 47:50 Creating a bishop's office that is a place to unload pain and feel hope. 49:00 Too many bishops insert themselves too much in other people's repentance process. You are not their parole office. You are their advocate. You help carry the baggage. 52:20 Helping people with repentance Setting the framework The people choose their own path to repentance, not the bishop Take the focus off the shame and shift it to creating better self worth 1:02:30 Letting people choose their own path to repentance. What's meaningful and personal to people is different and that's why a repentance checklist from the bishop isn't going to work for everyone. They have to work with the spirit to find out what they need to do to repent. 1:05:00 Disciplinary council is the last resort. We have to lean to the side of compassion and listen to the spirit. 1:08:45 Getting in trouble as bishop because he refused to kick anyone out of the ward just because they didn't live in the boundaries. He felt strongly about protecting ‘the one' and giving them a home. 1:12:20 Getting called as mission president.

This post covers my findings so far in the experiment of running the Berkeley Rationality and Effective Altruism Community Hub (REACH). Crossposted on EA Forum and LessWrong. tl;dr REACH has been running since March 2018 (around three months) It's doing well Hundreds of people have enjoyed REACH During the day, there are generally between 3 and 10 people coworking Regular events draw 10-40 people Large one-time events draw around 100 It has broad support -- over 100 people have donated significant time (from one afternoon of work up to around 40 hours) and/or money Patreon, one-time donations, and guest rooms have covered the rent until it was recently raised Community guests can stay there for relatively low prices for the area It has been full 75% of the time in May I'd like you to be involved Visit and attend events at REACH Volunteer (see this doc for some ways to help) Host events Monday, Thursday, and Friday nights are currently available for recurring or one-time events (see calendar) Help bridge our funding gap Rent has gone up to $6k/month unless we find a new venue We need to be able to pay a manager Managing the space takes 10-30 hours per week Help us find and apply for grants already planning to re-apply for CEA and BERI grants Put your own money in the pot if you find the project valuable (see Patreon or Paypal) Provide specific items to improve the space Why We Needed a Community Space What A Physical Space Can Do for Community Around December 2017, I started thinking that it would be really nice to have a central place where community members could: Conveniently host events (a function that had been fulfilled by the CFAR office before the switch to badged access) Cowork with community members during the day Come for low-key spontaneous socializing Bring kids to play together Be a default place to meet up with someone to chat about EA/R things Crash on a couch or grab a bed and stay for a while My initial thought was “we should buy a decommissioned church building!” However, I realized that funding such a large purchase would be pretty tricky, and that I could and probably should try out my ideas in a rental first and work toward buying a venue later. Even Berkeley Can Be Lonely People often talk about Berkeley as if it's a magical community hub, but actually many community members feel lonely, depressed and/or anxious (including myself). This has been a theme that has been coming up in public spaces as far back as winter solstice 2014. I have seen several attempts to mitigate this issue, but none have seemed to stick. Newcomers to the Berkeley community often find it difficult to become a part of the physical-space community—likely because much of the socializing happening in private spaces such as group houses, meaning that people only invite the folks they already know and trust. There are LessWrong meetups in Berkeley and SF, and EA meetups in the South Bay, but travelling for at least an hour to get to a regular EA meetup felt too difficult to work into my schedule, and the Berkeley LW meetup hasn't felt like the right space for me. The Hopes of Project Hufflepuff In 2017, Ray Arnold ran the Hufflepuff Unconference. At that event, I volunteered to join the bay area rationalist Welcoming Committee. That group accomplished a few things in the attempt to make the bay area community more inviting: Ensured that larger, more open events happened every few months (previously there was only 1 community-wide open event per year) Took over upkeep of the bayrationality.com website Created a document with trigger action plans for being more welcoming Started a discussion around documenting group norms There were several other ideas which were discussed at the Project Hufflepuff m...

The dirty sheets are popping this week with Billy Corgan is back in the news, once again still trying to keep his wrestling dreams alive. Cody Rhodes has likely chosen a new home promotion. Adam Cole is the hottest free agent in Pro Wrestling right now. Jack Swagger is adjusting to the indie life. Oh course, we have the latest updates on Alberto El Patron! The Slambros reflect on Payback, A mostly solid PPV by the WWE. Everyone from Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, Alexa Bliss, Braun Strownman and Roman Reigns had a great showing at the PPV. The House of Horrors match was the only blight and what a blight it was. Even after weeks of trying to figure out what the match was supposed to be, it failed to deliver or make sense in anyway. WWE followed a most solid PPV with a good RAW and Smackdown Live as well. With Brock Lesnar on vacation. The Intercontinental Championship is the top belt on RAW for the time being. Things are looking up, as Fin Balor, The Miz, Seth Rolling and Deam Ambrose are tasked with holding down RAW in the interim. Over on Smackdown Live, we have likely seem the end of Chris Jericho’s magical run. He’s off to tour with Fozzy, but before he had one more match with Kevin Owens. The Welcoming Committee and the Youth Group join forces to bring a service on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex issues and activism from around the world. In this multigenerational service, the youth will share some of their insights from the UU-UNO Spring Seminar.
