If you've ever run an ultramarathon, you almost certainly know the name of Marshall Ulrich. His accomplishments are unparalleled, and if I tried to list them, I'd undoubtedly leave out many. I could naturally mention his 29 official Badwater finishes in Death Valley, a race most of us would not want to tackle even once. Or that he dwarfed those finishes by continuing on to the Mt. Whitney summit, or that he once ran around the entire 425-mile perimeter of Death Valley, which we have fun talking about here. He completed the Seven Summits on his first attempt, and he set the speed record for the transcontinental run across the U.S., recounted in his great book, "Running on Empty." I could add his Stray Dogs team completed all of the Eco-Challenges, televised as The World's Toughest Race. You may have already heard about all of this, so instead let's focus on his latest endeavors, like the Route 66 Ultrarun, a 140-mile, multi-day event along that historic route in Arizona, and his support for his good friend and fellow Stray Dogs teammate Mark Macy in his inspiring battle against Alzheimer's. Marshall is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet in the sport. He was an early mentor to an aspiring ultraendurance athlete named David Clark, and wrote the foreword to David's first book, "Out There, a Story of Ultrarecovery." Marshall's latest book, "Both Feet on the Ground," will inspire you to seek out your own adventures. Grab on tight, you're in for a thrilling ride listening to Marshall!Marshall Ulrichmarshallulrich.comroute66ultrarun.comFacebook Marshall UlrichInstagram @marshall.ulrichBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Mace and Travis Macy join me today for a really special episode. Their new book, A Mile at a Time, is a well-written and unapologetic look at one family's experience with the diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease. Travis and Mace use humor, vulnerability, and channel their willingness to do the hard, important things, to share the highs and lows of their journey. Oh… and in case you didn't know, both of these gentlemen are powerhouse ultra-endurance athletes! In fact, Mace and Travis, a year after Mace's diagnosis, tackled Eco-Challenge Fiji - appropriately dubbed the World's Toughest Race… a 10 day, 417 mile race over mountains, rivers, swamps, and oceans. Travis (@travismacy) has finished over 130 ultra-endurance races, and held the record for the Leadman Challenge (if you don't know… you absolutely have to look it up). Mace (@mmacy146) is one of the OGs from the ultra-endurance world, having competed in everything from the Ironman Triathlon to the Leadville 100, and participating in all eight of the original Eco-Challenge races. Both the book and this interview have a ton of teachable moments, and it was a privilege to spend time with both of these guys. I know, without a doubt, you'll enjoy this one.

Here is an excerpt from the audiobook, A Mile At a Time with Travis and Mark Macy. Below is the synopsis from Penguin Random House: In October 2018, Mark “Mace” Macy, sixty-four years old, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Mace had spent thirty years competing in Colorado and around the world in ultra-endurance competitions and is one of the few people who have finished all eight Eco-Challenge events. Once diagnosed, Mace feared losing endurance, strength, and independence.  Mace's son Travis, also a professional endurance athlete, also struggled to see his father battling the disease. In 2019 they decided to participate in World's Toughest Race—a seven-day, grueling 400-mile marathon of trekking, climbing, biking, and paddling through the jungle—for one final race together. Weaving excerpts from Mace's passionate personal journals alongside a first-person narrative by Travis, A Mile at a Time tells the story of this incredible journey and what both father and son learned along the way. A powerful story about living—and thriving—with a disease that impacts nearly six million Americans. This timely, and deeply moving father-son adventure sheds light on the hard truths of this disease while giving readers hope of all that still can be achieved. Coree rose to prominence after his 21 day FKT on the Ice Age Trail, exactly one year ago. Before that he was seen rockin' a Speedo on the 10-part "World's Toughest Race" show on Amazon Prime (a great series). Coree has fun, and he has style. This is a very fun conversation with an intelligent and unique person - don't miss his captivating thoughts! "We intended to start everyday at 5:30am - the first day I woke up and said, 'Screw this; I'm going back to sleep.' Now we've changed the plan for FKTs: Start whenever I wake up - 10am or Noon - I'm totally fine with that. I prefer to run at night." Would it be safe to say you're not a methodical planner? "Absolutely. I don't like the logistics or planning - too much time to think. I want to be in top shape, and then just do it." In April Coree set the FKT on the 335 mile Pinhoti Trail in Alabama and Georgia. In this part of the country, there is no shortage of confederate flags flying. As a black man, out there sometimes alone at night, did he feel safe? "I didn't think about it. At mile 13, there was a giant confederate flag - I mean, giant. If anything, it made me more motivated. We want the outdoors experience to be available to everyone, and this demonstrates that. I never felt unsafe." "It was amazing. The people along that trail were awesome people. Pacers came out of the woodwork - they were working 8-5 jobs, showed up at night and ran with me until past Midnight, then were back at work at 8:00 the next morning." "People were dropping off hand-made food. One night I was freezing - I was so cold, all I wanted was warm soup. So a woman heard that, cooked home-made soup, and ran it out to me in the middle of the night on the trail." "Rural people are the best. So many people invited us into their homes. My crew is 3, 4, sometimes 5 people, and there was always room for us. I wanted everyone to know I felt safe. And: the Midwest is a friendly place!"

When many of us think of perseverance, we think of taking the next step. In adventure racing, the next step goes on for days and days with hardly any sleep. Our guests, Jason and Chelsey Magness built their relationship on a shared passion for adventure racing. As professional multi-sport athletes, teachers, coaches, acrobats and race directors they help thousands of people every year at live workshops, elite training camps to develop a mindset to persevere and overcome the next obstacle in your path.  As part of Team BendRacing, they travel the globe competing in some of the toughest races on earth, battling rugged conditions and exploring the edge of human potential.   Team Bend Racing is known for making bold choices, having fun in the harshest conditions and inspiring new racers to enter the sport. Jason has been racing for well over 20 years and Chelsey for going on 13 years. They are known as the toughest team in America thanks to being the top American team to finish the World's Toughest Race, and in general are looked up to when it comes to anything involving adventure and gear. They are always trying to grow this sport and love to inspire people to get out into nature and out of their comfort zones.   Let's face it, adventures can be difficult to accomplish! We start with grand ideas and plans, but we find the mountaintop experiences come only after hours or days of difficulties. Challenges along the way can bring discouragement, exhaustion, and frustration that might cause you to give up on your commitment. Developing an adventurous mindset will guide you toward perseverance.  Follow Along: Connect with Team BendRacing: https://www.bendracing.com/team  https://www.jandctraining.com/  https://www.facebook.com/BendRacing/   ADVENTUROUS LIFE FB COMMUNITY:  https://www.facebook.com/adventurouslife.net ADVENTUROUS LIFE INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/adventurouslifecoaching/  ADVENTUROUS LIFE LOCAL VENTURES: https://www.adventurouslife.net/local-ventures Podcast Inquiries: journey@adventurouslife.net

In this episode of The Outdoor Journal Podcast, Nash and Tash discuss how they overcame their lack of experience in many of the disciplines such as open ocean paddling, their surprise of their rare encounter with eco-challenge host Bear Grylls, their most precious piece of gear and how they improvised on the course, how they became empowered to inspire women from restrictive cultures around the world to dream big. "I feast upon the challenge that is presented to me" Mindy is an Emmy Nominated Casting Producer for Shark Tank (United States) and has been with the show throughout its 12 seasons. We caught up whilst she was working on the show 'in a bubble' in Los Vegas. She is also the Competitor Relations Director for the World's Toughest Race for the Amazon Prime Video (doco -series), adventure race - hosted by Bear Grylls. Many people title Mindy "The Gatekeeper". I also perceive her as 'the pitch master', a high performing/no nonsense/heart charging organised weapon. On top of that Mindy is a lot of fun! We discuss: •what the world of casting really entails •the power of the zigzag versus the linear •what are skill traits helpful in casting •how she successfully leads her small team •the influence from her parents •her life changing experience on the World's Toughest Race in Fiji •her work-in-progress approach to self care. " There isn't one thing that is at the end of the journey, there are going to be multiple lines of income. Find what you are good at, what works for you & what is the lifestyle you want to live." Brian Finestone hails from Whistler Canada and he is your all round adventure man & guide. ** If you have ANY ISSUES with the audio from this episode, please re-download the episode and it will work (relevant to subscribers to the samgashpodcast prior to 9 Sep)** This conversation looks at the concept of risk, yet also how you need to reinvent yourself to continually be living in your dream job. He wears many hats that include writer, photographer, fly fishing guide and Race Coordinator for Eco Challenge - the World's Toughest Race. Brian studied the Business of Adventure and his career has seen him as a ski patroller in Canada & the Swiss Alps, carrying 20kg of explosives for avalanche control. He was the Whistler Mountain Bike Park Manager for over a decade - bringing together his risk management prowess to construct trails that allowed riders of all levels to be challenged, without the consequence of not walking again if you made a mistake. He's has been the co-author of six guidebooks to skiing, mountain biking and hiking in Whistler BC - selling hundreds of thousands of copies. Currently Brian is the Director of Operations at Whitecap Risk and Safety Consultants, a company that specialises in ambitious projects in both sets and remote wilderness settings. He is part of the race management team for Eco Challenge - the World's Toughest Race. Excitingly he was in Patagonia earlier this year (pre-Covid) setting the new World's Toughest Race course!! We do a recap on his experiences in Fiji and some early thoughts of Patagonia. During this global pandemic Brian's experience in risk management and operations is being utilised as he creates 'Covid Exposure Control and Risk Management' for the Television and Film Industry. Brian is someone who believes 'motion is lotion'. He fully commits to the experience of living. This attitude has clearly rubbed off on how he parents his son Finn. I found his story inspiring and I hope you do too. You can follow Brian: @finestonephoto - instagram @BrianFinestone - twitter

Coree comes onto the podcast and chats all things Eco Challenge, The World's Toughest Race Fiji. Specifically what it was like to be part of Team Onyx, whose mission in the race went beyond the race experience itself. The team was participating with a purpose to represent the African American, as well as the LGBT community. The team comprised of record-holding ultramarathoner, Coree Aussem-Woltering, skilled ultra-endurance mountain biker Samantha Scipio, former Navy SEAL and Crossfit gym owner Chriss Smith Jr and former Div.1 NCAA football player and filmmaker Mikayla Lyles. Leading this team of trailblazers was seasoned adventure racer and former Marine Clifton Lyles. We discuss how the team formed, how they prepared for the challenge, what was their team strategy - considering they only met one before the race, and how was their experience. It truly is a masterclass in leadership and teams. Fast forward to 2020, Coree, has had his entire race season cancelled and decided to channel his fitness and passion into a fastest known time attempt on the Ice Age Trail. It is a historic footpath which runs through the state of Wisconsin, US. It took him 21 days, 13 hours, 35 minutes to run the 1,147 miles -- smashing the previous record by some five hours. It wasn't smooth sailing and Coree talks about the challenges and the fundamentals of focusing on 10 seconds at a time as a way to endure the hardship. At the same time he has raised over $50,000 to support small businesses in his community & those negatively affected by Covid-19 Coree is as much known for his Speedos and positive attitude as he is for his stand-out running ability. His coach once told Trail Runner Magazine he's never heard Coree make an excuse, and if he could bottle up Coree's work ethic and perseverance and sell it, he'd be a billionaire. Coree began his running career with the 400m and 800m distances, which he ran from middle school through college. He was en route to becoming a professional triathlete, when he discovered ultrarunning. Coree and his husband, a professional skydiver, live in Ottowa, Illinois (#CornfieldCowboys). Coree champions diversity in the outdoor world so that everyone can find a role model who looks like them. He is keen to break stereotypes in adventure sports.

The roles have been reversed and podcast favourite Lucy Bartholomew is interviewing ME for the 20th episode. Despite some reluctance on my end, Lucy convinced me that it is nice for you (the listener) to know more about the person interviewing all of these epic guests! Despite being interviewed on many other podcasts over the years, this surprisingly felt exposing - which is a healthy reminder for me in my role as host! Neither Lucy or I held back in what we shared. So here it is, and our regular conversations will continue in the next episode!!! We discuss: •the journey from awkward kid who avoided sport into someone who creates expedition and adventure races around the world. •our mutual admiration for Rich Roll •getting caught in the conveyer belt of perceived success •the power of storytelling across platforms •the process of allowing ideas to grow - from the initial idea, who you should share them with & the analytical phase. •how to be of value in collaborative teams •how the relief run came to life and raised over $1million in 12 days •imposter syndrome - when/where I've felt it & how I know navigate through it •taking ownership over how we communicate about ourselves •who I would want to sit at a dinner table with A brief snapshot into me: After a decade of study, I became a lawyer working for the largest international law firm in the world - Baker & McKenzie. I traded in my heels & mini tailored suit (which we discuss in the episode) for running shoes and I have spent the following decade using running, adventure and storytelling as a vehicle for social impact. Specifically, in the space of access to education; women's empowerment and supporting First Nations communities and organisations. I was the first woman to complete the 4 Deserts Grand Slam; traversed 3500kms across India on foot and completed the World's Toughest Race. I am a proud Goodwill Ambassador for World Vision Australia, the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and a corporate presenter. Last December I married Mark Wales, who I met on the set of Survivor. Together we have a wild two-year-old called Harry. I have raised $1.5 million dollars for charities such as World Vision, Save the Children and the Australian Red Cross, with the talent and time of some epic people. #11 Jen Segger on Adventure Racing, Endurance Coaching, and Pain as an Option

Jen Segger has traveled the globe competing as a world-class adventure racing athlete. She has, year after year, for nearly 2 decades, pushed her body to the extremes of what the human body is capable of enduring. And now, on the brink of 40, she is showing little sign of slowing down or becoming sedentary. Jen is my sister-in-law and partner to paddleboarder Norm Hann who I interviewed in episode 1. I interviewed her in my recording studio shortly after she and Norm paddled 250 km in 6 days from near their home north of Vancouver to my hometown of Victoria. Even in what was meant to be a getaway and chance to unplug, Jen still managed to push her body, and at some points her mind, to the edge – an edge that is far more remote than most people have ever dared to push near. Although Jen now focuses a great deal of her time on coaching others to explore their physical extremes, when she races, she still strives to cross the finish line first, as was her goal heading into last year's Eco-Challenge in Fiji, dubbed the “World's Toughest Race” and the race that originally inspired Jen nearly 20 years ago. Her racing resume boasts a staggering list of accomplishments that date back to 2003 with only a single year of downtime to give birth to her son Kiel. Through a remarkable visioning technique, Jen manages to delay her awareness of pain until a more opportune time, i.e. after the race has ended. Jen's feats are extraordinary, and her story is full of life lessons and sheer awe. You probably want to listen to this one with your headphones while pushing toward your physical limits.
