We discuss the history and future of WVXU.
HAPPY PRESERVATION MONTH! To celebrate, we wanted to share with you a new podcast that we think you'll love: Preservation for the People brought to you by The Black Art Conservators (BAC) and produced by Urbanist Media! In their first episode, Kayla Henry-Griffin and Nylah Byrd talk to Dr. Kwesi Daniels (Head of the Architecture Department at Tuskegee University) about conservation and preservation, the difference between the two, and what the future of the field might look like. When BAC reached out to us at Urbanist Media, asking if we could help produce their new podcast concept called Preservation for the People, we said yes, of course, because the project is SO mission-aligned. Huge thanks to our friend Rita Cofield of the Los Angeles African American Historic Places initiative with the Getty for introducing us to BAC! Preservation for the People is a new podcast from BAC, a collective of Black preservation professionals supporting each other, building community, and seeking change in the predominately white field of cultural heritage preservation. In Preservation for the People, hosts Kayla and Nylah, talk to other Black people in the preservation field about successes, struggles, and hopes for the future. Don't forget that Season Three of Urban Roots is coming in June! We've got four new documentary-style episodes coming your way. We will feature two-part series on the abolitionist history of the Ohio River and the history of Decatur, Alabama. The Ohio River to Freedom series will be coupled with Juneteenth Cincinnati Shorts, 90-second histories of people and places significant to Black history in Greater Cincinnati. Thanks to support from the Ohio Arts Council and Cincinnati Public Radio, these episodes (and shorts) will air on WVXU 91.7 and WGUC 90.9 in June. Full episodes will be available on Cincinnati Public Radio on Juneteenth! The Decatur series is produced for the City of Decatur and funded via a National Park Service Underrepresented Communities Grant. The first episode will focus on the history of First Missionary Baptist Church (designed by the infamous Wallace A. Rayfield who was also the architect of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham) while the second will uncover the history of a little-known female architect named Carolyn Corner Smith. Please remember that we are actively fundraising for the Ohio River to Freedom Series – so if you're interested in becoming a named series sponsor reach out to urbanrootspodcast@gmail.com. Or if you just want to help us out anonymously, please send a donation to @urbanistmedia via Paypal or Venmo. One episode will look into the history of an extraordinary Black church there, one of the few buildings left in the historic Black neighborhood of Old Town. And the other will tell the story of an unsung female architect who built hundreds of buildings in northern alabama in the 1920s and 30s. AND finally, if you're in the NYC on Juneteenth, we would love for you to come celebrate the holiday and the launch of Season 3 with us at Urban Vegan Roots in Astoria, Queens, at 6pm.
As you embark on your decluttering and simplifying journey, you start to ask yourself questions such as: What am I making space for? What dreams have been buried in the stuff and chaos around me? Where do I find my self-worth as a mom and woman? Is it in the roles that I play and the things I own, or something deeper? When we start simplifying and creating space in our homes, calendars, and minds, it opens up so much more than extra square footage or hours in our day. It allows us to dream, to see where our self-worth truly comes from outside what we have and what we do, and to reach our greatest potential as moms and women. On today's episode, simplicity coach Rose Lounsbury and I discuss these topics and much more! Rose helps busy working moms declutter their homes, simplify their work lives, and clear their minds. After struggling to balance a teaching career and 2-year-old triplets, Rose was introduced to minimalism in 2012. Inspired by the “less is more” philosophy, she let go of 70% of her family's possessions in eight months. She eventually left the classroom to pursue a career helping other working moms create happier lives with less stuff. Rose's advice has been featured on TEDx and USA Today, and she's been a guest on Good Day Columbus, WYSO, WVXU, and Good Morning Cincinnati. This week's podcast guest is Judith Turner-Yakamoto (Loving the Dead and Gone, Regal House, September 2022). We discuss how she pulled her manuscript just before it was going to press because she realized she needed to “kill someone”, how even though she worked for 20 years as a publicist, she still considers the publishing business a deeply strange pond, how getting comfortable with sharing deeply-personal posts on Facebook has helped grow her readership and brought her speaking opportunities, and how she found her publisher through becoming a finalist for the Petrichor Prize, an annual fiction writing competition. Judith Turner-Yamamoto's debut novel LOVING THE DEAD AND GONE, a Mariel Hemingway Book Club pick, won the 2023 Independent Publisher Book Awards Gold Medal in Southern Regional Fiction. The North Carolina Society of Historians recognized the novel with the 2023 Historical Novel Award. Shortlisted for the 2023 Eric Hoffer Book Awards Grand Prize, the book was also honorable mention in General Fiction and finalist for the First Horizon Award for Debut Fiction. Judith's other awards include two Virginia Arts Commission fellowships, an Ohio Arts Council fellowship, the Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize, and the Virginia Screenwriting Award. Judith's publications include StorySOUTH, Mississippi Review, Deep South, and many anthologies. Her articles have appeared in Elle, Travel & Leisure, AARP, and the Los Angeles Times, and her interviews aired on NPR affiliate WVXU. A Kentucky Humanities Speakers Bureau scholar, Judith speaks at conferences and book festivals, including the Chautauqua Writers' Center, Chautauqua Institution, the Santa Barbara Writers Conference, and Gaithersburg Book Festival. She lives on the Kentucky/Ohio border where her love of travel and place continues to inspire her writing. To learn more about Judith, click here.

To celebrate Juneteenth, Urbanist Media's Urban Roots podcast has partnered with Cincinnati Public Radio (WVXU) to bring you Juneteenth Cincinnati Shorts: weekly, 90-second tributes to people and places important to Cincinnati's African American history. Today, for our last short, we feature Marian Spencer, the civil rights activist and Cincinnati pioneer who got her start in 1952. Back then, Ms. Marian Spencer was a mother of two kids who were begging her to let them go to Coney Island. Ms. Spencer had a hunch they wouldn't be welcome. She called and the girl on the line said: “I'm sorry, We don't admit Negroes.” adding “But I don't make the rules.” Ms. Spencer replied: “I know honey, but I'm going to find out who does.” Ms. Spencer did — and she changed the rules. Tune in to 91.7 WVXU on Thursdays at 5:49 and 7:50 a.m. during Morning Edition and again at 4:50 p.m. during All Things Considered. Additionally, episodes will air on sister station 90.9 WGUC each Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. If you missed the broadcasts, don't worry – you can find each short on the Urban Roots podcast feed, our Instagram, and YouTube pages. Today, we're highlighting Union Baptist Cemetery, one of Cincinnati's oldest African American cemeteries. It's the final resting place of many of Cincinnati's important Black residents, including the woman who integrated Cincinnati's street cars, Sarah Fossett (along with her husband and his entire family), Jennie Porter, the first Black woman to become a principal in Cincinnati, and baseball legend Newt Allen Jr., one of the best second baseman the game has ever seen. Today, we're highlighting Sarah Fossett, the hair stylist and Underground Railroad conductor who — with two acts of defiance in 1862 — spurred the integration of Cincinnati's street cars. While we couldn't quite fit it into this short, Sarah would go on to help found the First Baptist Church of Cumminsville. History is often taught in the classroom, but perhaps the real history is outside for students to learn and put into action. Paul LaRue, a retired history teacher, currently serves on Ohio's State Board of Education and is dedicated to helping students make those critical connections with history and civics out in the field. He provides some fascinating insight and experiences from his teaching career and offers ways for young people to get involved in the discovery of history and civics. Taylor tells us about how the station started, how he discovered 97X, and how the 97X message boards helped him connect with kindred spirits.

Less bugs, more microphones—this is how we like to commune with the elements here at D&Z. Cincinnati Public Radio's first-ever PodCamp brought together students from across the region on a recent Sunday afternoon to brainstorm, develop, and record their own mini-podcasts, with inspiration and tech help from some creative pros. Here's what the three teams came up with... and then some. Introduction: Jordan Polk, of Elementz, recent alumnus of Democracy & Me and the University of Cincinnati Part 1: Lost in Transition Real talk about what these Covid school years have done to us, with Norah Zellen and Annabelle Freeman of Nagel Middle School; Emmalee Brammer of North Adams H.S., and Olivia Kelly of Winton Woods H.S. Content advisory: This segment contains references to self-harm, suicide, vaping, and drug use. Part 2: #Overrated Pawan Rai of Aiken New Tech H.S. and Jonathan Moody of Walnut Hills H.S. explain why that movie (which they may or may not have seen) is not as good as you think it is. Also: geometry class. Too many numbers. Part 3: Mind Your Business The real problem is that too many people (and some entire countries) are paying attention to all the wrong things. With Sydnie Barrett of Walnut Hills H.S., and Syriene Djakata and Joyeuse Muhorakeye of Aiken H.S. Part 4: Playback Circle Time We came, we played, we podded: PodCampers and staff work the picket line and reflect on the day's lessons. COMPANY COMPOSER: Stephen Sondheim LYRICIST: Stephen Sondheim BOOK: George Furth DIRECTOR: Hal Prince CHOREOGRAPHER: Michael Bennett PRINCIPLE CAST: Beth Howland (Amy), Dean Jones (Bobby), Elaine Stritch (Joanne) OPENING DATE: Apr 26, 1970 CLOSING DATE: Jan 01, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 705 SYNOPSIS: On his 35th birthday, bachelor Robert is confronted by his happily, and unhappily, married friends, as well as his three girlfriends, who all push him towards committing to another human being. Stephen Sondheim had tremendous early success as a Broadway lyricist, but until the success of Company, his work as a composer could not be regarded as commercially successful. Based on a series of sketches about married couples by actor George Furth, Sondheim and director Hal Prince developed a musical which navigated a bachelor's relationships with his lovers and married friends. Rick Pender promotes Company's significance as an early book musical which, through Boris Aronson's design, Prince and Michael Bennett's staging, Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations, subject matter, and rough narrative, epitomized contemporary storytelling and broke away from the conventions of traditional musical theatre. Later revivals of the show staged by John Doyle and Marianne Elliott employed tactics which kept Company at the cutting edge of the art form and in dialogue with timely societal critique. Rick Pender- From 2004 to 2016 Rick Pender edited The Sondheim Review; in 2017 he launched EverythingSondheim.org. His book The Stephen Sondheim Encyclopedia was published in 2021. He has written about theater for Cincinnati CityBeat since it began publishing in 1994, and he was the paper's arts and entertainment editor from 1998 until 2006. Ohio's Society of Professional Journalists recognized him the state's best arts critic in 2002 and 2017. He contributed theater interviews to public radio station WVXU's weekly arts magazine for 15 years. Rick is a past chair of the American Theatre Critics Association. WVXU marks two years of the COVID-19 pandemic
The news started coming in overnight Wednesday: after weeks of military buildup on the Ukrainian border, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on the former Soviet Republic, now an independent democracy and home to more than 40 million people. On Thursday, those citizens of Ukraine—and most of the rest of the world—were in shock and terror, many fleeing for safety and all wondering how far this unprovoked attack might go. Regina Appatova is an ESL educator at Aiken New Tech High School in Cincinnati, who grew up in Ukraine and lived in Russia. We asked her to help us understand the conflict, the enduring bonds between the two countries, and what it's been like this week for Americans like her with roots and loved ones in Eastern Europe. “It's a nightmare,” she says—and no one knows how much worse the situation might get, before Putin gets what he wants. It's February, and you know what that means—bring on the Dr. King coloring sheets! But how did Black History Month even become a thing? Is there a right way or a wrong way to celebrate it? Who are some local African-American historical figures we should all know more about, and if Dr. David Childs could host a dinner party with some of his own heroes from the past, who'd be on the guest list? Our resident #BlackHistory expert answers these and other questions from listeners, and even lifts our spirits with song, in this special episode. When did you first learn about 9/11? What about the war in Afghanistan that followed—how much did you know about all that, at least until the past few weeks, when the U.S. military's final withdrawal from Kabul was all over the news? We grew up in a world defined by these tragic events, but most young Americans have only a vague understanding of the so-called War on Terrorism, and very little sense of the human costs of this 20-year conflict. In this episode, we talk with a Xavier University student who grew up in Afghanistan—his father was an interpreter assisting U.S. forces—and who still has loved ones in the devastated homeland now controlled by the Taliban. We all have different perspectives on the tragic aftermath of 9/11, and different ideas about what might come next. But with improved safety, education, and understanding, we all hope to see a better world rising from the ashes. Today, I'm chatting with my friend Rose Lounsbury about minimalism. Overwhelm and burnout are common feelings that lead people toward minimalism. Once Rose got her house "under control" a lot of the stress and overwhelm caused by her home was gone. She could finally relax. We discuss how to decide what you need in your life. Change the questions that you ask yourself. Reduce the amount of things you need. That cuts down on what you need to organize and keep clean. If you're unsure or you need training wheels, get a "purgatory" box. We also discuss how things changed with the pandemic. We wrap up talking about where is the best place to start. 1. Start somewhere easy. 2. Start with your own stuff. Our new feature, OKI Wanna Know , is a way for you to get an answer to one of life's little mysteries in the Tri-State. It's the story behind those quirky things that make the area what it is. In this edition, WVXU's Bill Rinehart scratches an itch that's bugged him since he first moved to the Central Business District 12 years ago. Picture a Downtown sidewalk. There's a few trees, a fire hydrant, parking meters and maybe a pole with a triangular black box on top.
Walk around downtown Cincinnati and you'll find statues of three presidents: William Henry Harrison, James Garfield and Abraham Lincoln. What you won't find is a statue honoring the one president who was actually born in Cincinnati. WVXU's Bill Rinehart wondered why in the new series, OKI Wanna Know.
In 2017, when a new program replaced the long-running Diane Rehm Show , the producers and host of 1A recognized the proverbial "big shoes" they were tasked to fill.

Rose Lounsbury is on a journey of decluttering and minimalism from Dayton, Ohio. Rose says entrepreneurs are high achievers, but they often need to learn to let go and let go of the guilt. This the same as decluttering in real life. Reducing paper in your life tips: Create one inbox; it's your "intake" it is just a temporary collection point to process. Have a one day of week where you R.A.F.T. the inbox to stop the drowning in paper. Read Action File & Trash Readable piles are magazines, articles, etc. Action piles maybe bills, invitations, or something that needs a response, or delegate it to someone who needs to deal with it. You can also transfer this to a digital To-Do list. File piles are for things you need to keep, but first, ask this: 1) Is this relevant? 2) Is this a recent issue? 3) Can I find this information elsewhere (online)? Trash piles, this may take time. But work through it! Deal with memorabilia separately, make a separate pile at a different time. Also, see Process for Profit - Ep. 34 Digital Detox for more ideas! Cincinnati's music history is long and rich. Still, the new music scene here tends to fly under the radar; a lot of people outside our region don't realize just how profoundly — and diversely — artistic the Queen City is.Jim Nolan, host of WVXU's 'Local Exposure,' is one of the faithful keepers of the Tristate's creative flame. His show features local artists and introduces the wider NPR audience to them. This week, Jonathan sat down with him to talk about local music history, discuss the artists that are driving the scene today, spin an all-Cincy playlist, and finally tease out Jim's long-untold hero origin story.PLAYLIST HIGHLIGHTS: Brand new music from Chuck Cleaver (Wussy, Ass Ponys), Carriers, and Phasmids. Classic spins from The Raisins, Over the Rhine, The Sweep, and Mad Anthony, plus tracks from Paige Beller, Wonky Tonk, Electric Citizen, TRIIIBE, Us, Today, and others.

We debated the validity of the term "classic rock," kept a watchful eye on our friendly neighborhood studio spider and played a stellar psych-shoegaze-and-synth song lineup for you. Don't miss it!
