Currently, the market for adult diapers in the US is almost as large as the market for baby diapers. Part of this trend is because birth rates have slowed down and longevity continues to lengthen but the other reason why almost 50% of adults experience some form of urinary incontinence is due to an increase in risk factors. She is also the author of the bestselling book Your Pelvic Floor which was The Merry Menopause Bookclub pick in February. Menopause can bring several changes to the body, including pelvic health issues. Join us as we discuss:-The Importance of Pelvic Floor Health: Kim emphasises the importance of pelvic floor health and how it's often overlooked until something goes wrong. She encourages women to take a proactive approach to their pelvic health by seeking education and treatment early on.Signs of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Kim explains common signs of pelvic floor dysfunction, including incontinence, prolapse, and pain. She stresses that these issues are treatable and encourages women to seek help from a pelvic floor physiotherapist. The Link between Pelvic Health and Back Pain: Kim shares that 95% of women with lower back pain have a pelvic floor issue. She also shares her mother's journey with pelvic floor issues and how working with a physiotherapist at age 77 avoided surgery.Strategies for Proactive Pelvic Health: Kim suggests three strategies for proactive pelvic health during menopause: seeking treatment from a pelvic floor physiotherapist, doing pelvic floor exercises, and training the pelvic floor to respond to movement rather than static positions.Understanding Overactive Pelvic Floor: Kim explains that pelvic floor dysfunction can also result from an overactive pelvic floor, which can cause tightness rather than weakness. She notes that seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist can help women understand the status of their pelvic floor and develop appropriate treatment plans.Living a Pelvic-Centric Lifestyle: Kim provides practical tips for living a pelvic-centric lifestyle, including staying hydrated, avoiding bladder irritants, and understanding the importance of vaginal PH and its relationship to UTIs.Kim's Book Recommendation - Next Level   by Stacy Sims. You can find out more about Kim hereWishing you a Merry MenopauseJoSupport the showLearn more about me and my work at www.themerrymenopause.comFollow me on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedINJoin my private Facebook group

Today I am talking to Dr. Melissa Simon. Dr. Simon served on the US Preventative Services Task Force Recommendation Committee (USPSTF), the government organization that shapes public policy and sets recommendations followed by doctors all over the country. So, when your doctor says you only need a Pap test every 3 years and that you no longer need a Pap test at all after age 65,  it is based on the recommendation of this committee.  How do they come up with these guidelines? And, are they always right? In this episode I challenge Dr. Simon on some controversial Task Force recommendations that have informed the way your doctor practices medicine, and dictated the health care you receive. And if you listened to Episode 58 Two Experts Two Timely Topics, you know what an amazing guest Dr. Simon is!  We discuss:  The role of the National Institute of Health (NIH)  The role of the National Institute of US Preventative Services Task Force Recommendation Committee (USPSTF) Problems with the current Pap test recommendations If women over 65 should get a pap test, and if so, who would benefit Who should get genetic testing for the BRCA mutation  Why urinary incontinence is a public health issue The public library and public health How you can influence public health policies  US Preventative Services Task Force Recommendation Committee https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/ Health for All Library Project: https://healthforallproject.org/  To leave a comment on cervical cancer screening: (comments periodically close but often open up again) https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/draft-update-summary/cervical-cancer-screening-adults-adolescents  Final plan for cervical screening  which will also post for public comment: https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/document/final-research-plan/cervical-cancer-screening-adults-adolescents To find out what preventative services you should have: https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/apps/                                                   Melissa Simon MD Twitter: @DrMelissa Simon LinkedIn: 2Melissa-simon https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/faculty-profiles/az/profile.html?xid=16856 For more information: Episode 26: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion  in Health Care, and Why it Matters with Dr. Fenwa Milhouse Episode 39 A Personal Trainer for Your Pelvic Floor with Dr. Janelle Howell  Episode 44 A Deep Dive into RECURRENT UTI Episode 58 Two Experts Two Timely Topics Lauren Streicher, MD is a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, and the founding medical director of the Northwestern Medicine Center for Sexual Medicine and Menopause. This week's guest is Kim Vopni, vagina coach, pelvic floor specialist and author of Your Pelvic Floor, a practical guide to solving your most intimate problems. She believes it's time for pelvic health to be discussed & offered to all vagina owners & that it's time to break through taboos & redefine how we think about women's health. It took her awhile to figure out what she wanted to do...and then once she was in her career, she was laid off after 9 years.  Thankfully she had started a little side gig that has been her main thing for over 13 years now. Her 40's were a challenge...  perimenopause!  She had never heard of perimenopause at the time and was lost.  She herself had Rectocele & Uterine Prolapse. Having always been a healthy thriving person, to be sidelined by crazy symptoms was frustrating.  Ultimately it led her to great opportunities to learn, improve her own health and be able to help others. She was already living her purpose but it added fuel to her fire surrounding the lack of awareness and education on women's health. She offers online programs and coaching to help women prevent and overcome pelvic floor challenges.  There is so much suffering associated with pelvic health and so many people living less than their best life.  She is not interested in suffering and wants to ensure others know they don't have to. She believes courage is standing up for your beliefs knowing you may be met with resistance but doing it anyway. Thanks Kim for opening up the dialogue for vaginal health and making it normal to talk about so that we can get help to address any issues we have.Thank you also for showing us how not to give up on our vagina's when they have seemingly given up on us. You can find out more about Kim's work on https://www.vaginacoach.com/about and follow her on Instagram @vaginacoachJoin Lou on LinkedinFollow her @brave_newgirl on Instagram and get her books Brave New Girl- How to be Fearless, FEAR LESS and her Internationally Bestselling book DARE TO SHARE on Amazon or Waterstones or Barnes & Noble. Pelvic floor muscles play an important role in our bodies, and we may not realize how important until we have incontinence, pain, and/or prolapse. A common concern is the root cause of a dysfunction might not be properly addressed causing issues down the line such as the need for surgery or repeat surgery. Kim Vopni, author of Your Pelvic Floor, is a self professed pelvic health evangelist and is known as The Vagina Coach. She is a certified fitness professional who wants to end the suffering associated with pelvic floor dysfunction. What are the signs of a weak pelvic floor and how do you fix pelvic floor dysfunction? What are pelvic floor dysfunction treatment options and which pelvic floor dysfunctions might require surgery? How do you optimize pelvic floor surgery recovery time and outcomes? How successful is pelvic prolapse surgery, and what can you do post surgery to optimize results? How do you find the right pelvic floor surgeon? Which questions should you ask the pelvic floor surgeon? What if you can't afford a pelvic floor specialist or surgeon? “I do see a lot of people after the fact who say “I had surgery for this and then I still have this problem or the problem came back” or “I have another problem and then I had another surgery.” People will chase the problem with surgery or pharmaceuticals and aren't getting to a root cause.” - Kim Vopni Follow Kim Vopni on Instagram Resources: Buff Muff App Free Pelvic Surgery Webinar Spotify Playlist for other Pelvic Health related episodes Kim's Book Your Pelvic Floor Study on lower back pain and association with pelvic floor issues Below the Belt film   If you liked this episode and you're feeling generous, don't forget to leave a review on iTunes or Spotify! Pelvic floor specialist Kim Vopni is known as the Vagina Coach and she's disrupting taboo topics to help women all over the world overcome problems of our most intimate parts, like vaginal prolapse and incontinence, which is a bigger problem than you may think. I first met Kim Vopni because members of the Biohacking Women 50+ club on Clubhouse were telling me to reach out to her so we can talk about vagina issues related to our age group like sneeze pees and vaginal dryness. Yeah, we talk about everything in that club. I was blown away by what she told us and love that she does not accept “light bladder leakage” as just part of being a woman. Thank you! Kim is a very qualified pelvic floor specialist and fitness professional. She also has a degree in Psychology and a postgraduate certificate in Health and Fitness. She writes books and regularly speaks publicly to campaign for women's health. She just wrote a book earlier this year called Your Pelvic Floor. Kim is the founder of Pelvienne Wellness Inc – this is a company that gives pelvic health programs, products and coaching for women in pregnancy, motherhood and, yes, menopause. She also created a really cool recovery and birth prep system for pregnant women called the Ab System. And if you're a health professional out there, or, want to be one, Kim also certifies people to know how to specifically work with women who have core and pelvic floor challenges through a couple of certification courses she offers. The Core Confidence Specialist and the Pre/Postnatal Fitness Specialist. You are wasting your time on your fitness routine if you are not focusing on lengthening before contracting and not addressing areas in your body that you are holding tension. A chronically short / tense muscle is weak and will fatigue quickly. Add on a contraction and all your doing is adding to the tension. THIS IS WHY KEGELS ARE NOT THE ONLY FIX FOR PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION. Your Pelvic Floor needs to be able to lengthen BEFORE it can gain any strength through a Kegel or contraction. Module 4 in My Course is all about relieving and releasing tension starting at your feet and going all the way to your head. By releasing tension we can get muscles working and doing their jobs as well as progressively gain strength through resistance training.
