Today we talk about one of the common reasons people struggle to lose weight, and that is under nourishment, and we discuss both scenarios of being UNDERfed and undernourished as well as OVERfed and undernourished. Contrary to popular belief, holding on to weight isn't just about a lack of willpower or not exercising enough; even genetics plays just a minor role. There are numerous other factors that influence our weight, including our gut microbiome, toxins, mitochondrial function, hormones, stress, and even our relationships. BUT by applying the principles of Functional Medicine, we can peel back the layers to identify the blocking factors and focus on specific needs to get you nourished and balance your body properly, and, in turn, to achieve a healthy weight.Have a question you want us to answer live? Here in the U.S. we have all you can eat buffets and cheap processed foods implying that we are well fed. While it's true that most people in the U.S. are able to fill their stomachs with food, a majority of the population is lacking in nutrition. We know this simply by looking at the rise of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and etc. If we were achieving our necessary levels of nutrition, then these diseases would be much less common. Tune in to hear Evan cover: What food groups make up a majority of our calories. Why these foods are nutrient deficient. What foods are nutrient dense and should be on our plates. The amount of sugar found in many foods. The difference in caloric intake from 1970-2010. What changes you can make to become properly fed and properly nourished. Evan hopes that you walk away from this episode with the tools to make a change in your health and be the best version of yourself possible. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” Dr Erik Korem   “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce   John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience:  “Whenever you are sparring, your mind will have a given direction of focus. Everyone is going through their own Rites Of Passage, the question is, how do you embrace the challenge, and how do we get back to what truly matters in life and relationships. Arne Rubinstein is the founder and CEO of The Rites Of Passage Institute and the author of the book ‘The Making Of Men'. In our interview we dive into some of the big challenges youth, families and adults are facing right now in the world we live in today. Many people are busy, but empty, filling their time with “to do's” instead of things that light them up. Youth are turning to drugs and alcohol, because of a lack of guidance and understanding of their journey from a child to an adult. Parents are disconnected with their children and adults are not embracing the different steps of their path as they move through their different stages of life. Arne and the Rites of Passage Institute, have guided over 150,000 people through his programs around the world. From school kids, parents, father son camps, leadership, corporate and facilitation trainings with the one purpose, of bringing back in, what indigenous cultures have known and practices for centuries – Rites Of Passage. When we have a set of values in our lives that are unique to us, and we live in alignment congruently with what we value most, and we’re spontaneously inspired from within to act, and we’re disciplined, reliable, and focused, and we tend to walk our talk and expand our space and time horizons, and build momentum, and awaken our executive center, and awaken an inspired vision and strategically plan that vision and execute that vision with self-governance, we reach a state of objectivity that allows us to be soulful, full of unconditional love, with neutrality, and non-polarization. When we live by our lower values, the things we seek and avoid occupy space and time in our minds and add time and space which ages us entropically, but when we live by our highest values we extract out space and time from our minds and become present, and we achieve a timeless agelessness. “A state of objectivity allows us to be soulful and full of unconditional love” - Dr. John DemartiniFocusing on Personal Development Whenever one lives by their highest values, they embrace challenges in the pursuit of a mission, and they fill their day with challenges that inspire them to have fulfillment, because when we live by our highest values we have fulfillment, and when we don’t we have emptiness. Solving human problems is the greatest problem we can solve on the earth, and so anything we can do to solve human challenges, problems, and voids, and help them fill those voids, solve those mysteries, solve those problems, and answer those questions is the highest pursuit the human being can do that gives the most fulfillment in life. At the level of the essence of our soul, we have nothing missing in our lives, but at the level of the existence of our senses, things appear to be missing and that’s where our problems originate. So any time we can solve that, that’s to our greatest advantage, and the most fulfillment. “If you ask concise questions your life goes in a concise direction” - Dr. John DemartiniA Balanced MindImmanuel Kant said that there is an imminent and transcendent self. One that dealt with phenomena of the senses and one that dealt with nomina, or what Plato would call the ideal forms of assault. Scientists have now put that into neurological terms as the amygdala and hind brain areas, and the forebrain/executive center Scientists now put them in neurological terms as the amygdala (hindbrain areas) and the forebrain (Executive center). Whenever we’re in our imminent mind (Amygdala), we seek support over challenge, we seek prey over predator, and we end up manifesting false positives as a survival mechanism. The amygdala accentuates subjective biases with false positives to accentuate a positive and a negative, and we polarise our emotions and chemistries. That causes an addiction to pleasure and pride, and the avoidance of pain and shame externally and internally, and one becomes vulnerable to those that sell the fantasy of the opium of the masses (Of pleasure without pain). In actual fact, maximum development and achievement occurs at the border of those two. If one gets prey without predator, they get glutinous and fat, and they don’t get fit. If one gets predator without prey, one starves and doesn’t get fit. But if one puts the two together, the predator keeps them eating just the right amount to keep them fit, but not too much. Living in our amygdala and our lowest values is what causes us to have an addiction to positive thinking because we’re uninspired by what we do, unobjective, not engaged, and we’re looking for immediate gratification to compensate for it because our space and time horizons are shrunk. Dr. Demartini will share how he gave up on positive thinking to embrace having a balanced mind more.“When we’re living by our highest values, we don’t live to eat, we eat to live” - Dr. John DemartiniRewriting Evolution BiasesThe instincts and impulses in our animal nature are epigenetic responses from subjectively stored data that we picked up from conception till today. So every time we perceive something, and we’re attracted to it, and we are conscious of the upsides and unconscious of the downsides, we polarize our perceptions with bias, and we have a false reality. That polarity of perception skews our reality and we have uncertainty. We always have our intuition telling us when something is not true so when someone has a perception about us that is polarized, we can tell if it’s not true. If someone tells us both the good and bad about us, we can accept it as true because we would have certainty derived from seeing both sides.“Inspiration is a confirmation we’re living authentically” - Dr. John DemartiniThe Source of IntuitionImpulse is a desire and yearning for the prey, and instinct is a desire to avoid the predator, and they are a positive feedback system which dramatizes and polarizes towards false positives to make sure one doesn’t get eaten and that they eat. Intuition is a neutralizing negative feedback system trying to find the downsides in the prey to calm down one’s impulse, and the upsides to the predator so one can calm down their instinct, so they can be present, because when one is present and they’re still, they’ll actually draw the animal to themselves and the other one will not bite. The second one is centered and they don’t have impulse and instinct, an intuition is the negative feedback system trying to homeostat them back in equilibrium. People who don’t govern over their impulse and instinct live with passion of an animal and those that know how to govern themselves with their intuition live with a mission as an angelic human.“A human being can never have certainty unless they have objectivity” - Dr. John DemartiniHis Journey of Self-Improvement He was born with a speech impediment and he had to wear strings and buttons in his mouth from age four and he had to go to a speech pathologist because he had problems with pronunciation and using his mouth properly. He also had his arm and leg turned in so he had to wear braces until he was four. When he got into first grade, he could not spell or read at all. His teacher told his parents that John wouldn’t be able to read, write, communicate, or amount to anything. He made it through elementary school by learning how to ask very smart kids questions, and he would make them feel better about themselves by asking what they had learned from the books they would read. He is known today for his skill of asking questions because of that. They moved to Richmond, Texas in a low socioeconomic area and the school he went to didn’t have very bright kids so he didn’t have anybody to ask questions which caused him to fail and drop out. He became a street kid and at 14 hitchhiked to California where he was still a street kid but eventually took up surfing which led him to Hawaii where he lived on the streets too. At age 17 he nearly died in the tent he used to live but a lady stranger saved him. The lady took him to a health food store where he met someone who encouraged him to take a yoga class which he did one night, and there was a special guest speaker whose message changed his life forever. From there he kept doing the affirmations that he was taught in every thing that he used to fail in and he ended up getting all the educational qualifications that he never thought he could achieve, and kept on achieving great milestones in life.“A genius is one who listens to their inner vision and follows and obeys their inner voice” - Dr. John Demartini See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's not enough to just stop consuming so much of the junk. We, of course, need to replace it with what our minds, bodies and spirits are actually needing. If we want to have greater emotional health, strength and connection. Show Notes: https://michaelssorensen.com/podcast/e23-emotional-junk-food-how-we-are-overfed-undernourished/

Looking at that list to see what you can create is compelling, and it will make you dream bigger and do more every single day. Who are Anthony and Kate Golle? Anthony and Kate Golle are high school sweethearts and have 3 kids, 6, 8 & 10 years old. Anthony is a Chiropractor and they owned 5 Wellness Centres. Cowspiracy - which explains how much resources it takes to create a cow (acres of land, gallons of water) What the Health - Which shows the benefits of eating a plant based diet (both of these movies are done by the same team). Overfed and Undernourished - Examines a global epidemic and our modern lifestyles through one boy's inspiring and personal journey to regain his health from the inside out. After heartache, Liam Gollé weighing in at over 176lbs turns to his Aunty & Uncle for help, and embarks on a journey that promises to transform his life forever. Vegucated - A movie that shows a few people from different walks of life who attempt to go Vegan for a week. It also has some pretty brutal video of slaughter houses. All These Health Organizations Are on the Take This movie shows how agencies: The American Diabetes Association -  was taking money from Dannon who make Yogurt, Kraft Cheese, Oscar Meyer Processed meats, Bumblebee Foods (all of which contribute to Diabetes), even though American Heart Association The American Cancer Society - was taking money from Tyson (one the world's largest meat producers), Yum! (owners of KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell) Susan B Komen Breast Cancer - Partners with KFC, and Yoplait Yogurt (Studies show Yogurt leads to Breast Cancer according to the movie) The American Heart Association - Takes hundreds of thousands of dollars from meat, poultry, and dairy industry. Taking millions of dollars from the Fast Food and processed food manufacturers Every one of these companies is taking money from meat and dairy companies that make food that are associated with cause of these diseases This would be like the American Lung Association taking money from the Tobacco industry. There is an obvious conflict of interest. When these organizations put out reports, we need to realize who really paid for those reports. Conspiracy Was Almost Shut Down In the movie, you hear how the financial backing pulls out of the movie (for fear of retaliation from the Meat industry?). Obviously, the movie was made. It did a great job of making me a skeptic so I sent an email to the makers of the film who replied back quickly and pointed me to their crowd sourcing campaign that showed how they raised $117,092 They actually raised their goal in six days and ended up with 217% of their goal. The Whole "Planet Thing" I'm not a hippie. I've never hugged a tree, but the math is simple. The population is growing at an alarming pace. The countries that have the most rapid growth are trying to eat more like Americans (meat and dairy), and if we all are like Americans, we would need five four more earths. There simply isn't enough space to grow the feed, to raise the cows, and to dispose of the monstrous amount of poop. So I'm might recycle if it's offered, but that is about as far as I go typically. Hard To Argue with Proof These movies have me seriously considering eating less meat. While I would love to say it's to save the planet, but the truth is when I see someone (in What the Health) who can barely walk using a walker and later after just switching her diet be walking down the street - that's hard to argue with. Another example in the movie had someone who was wheezing when she spoke. She had problems breathing. This was remedied in a very short time and both of them through buckets of pills in the trash But What About Cavemen? I hear alot about the Paleo Diet. Where we should eat meat wrapped in bacon, thrown on top of eggs. There are some places where you can't grow fruits and vegetables, so you gotta eat something to live. A Targeted Plan of Action Seems Like Forever - But It's Not In the movie Overfed and Undernourished we watch a young boy go to live with his Aunt and Uncle who get him off horrible food choices and on to (you guessed it) primarily plant based diet. At the beginning of the movie, he has man boobs (and I think he was 13). A few months later he's in much better condition. He almost quits a few times, but he sticks with it and in the end, the results are obvious. It took a while to find him, but his Facebook page seems to show he has kept it off. I can only imagine the pressure he is under. So Where Do I Go From Here? I'm going to attempt Meat Free Mondays (see https://www.meatfreemondays.com/) which has great recipes, etc. If I can do one day a week, then maybe I'll go two days a week (then three) The biggest problem I see with all diets is we all shoot for perfection. As I speak right now I have a package of drumsticks, and a box of frozen burgers. I work too hard to throw food away. I know trying to go Vegetarian cold turkey is rough, but if I can do this over time, little by little, I can pull this off. This means I'm going to have to try new things. I'm going to end up eating humis at some point. I'm going to be using my Air Fryer to cook Squash and Cauliflower instead of Chicken. There are three types of vegetarians: Lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat both dairy products and eggs; this is the most common type of vegetarian diet.  Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy products but avoid eggs.  Ovo-vegetarian. Eats eggs but not dairy products.  Vegans do not eat dairy products, eggs, or any other products which are derived from animals. - source I can see me starting out as Lacto-ovo-vegetarians and going from there. It will take time, but I do see the undeniable health benefits (and will get into iron, and other things another day). I'll dive into why they're important and how we can get more. http://primalpotential.com/overfed-and-undernourished-part-1/ We have an unfortunate tendency to rely on processed foods that deliver energy without nutrition (or with little nutrition). This leads to "malnutrition of affluence" or a situation of being overfed and undernourished. We simply aren't giving our bodies the raw materials they need to function optimally. This leads to: Obesity Fatigue Inflammation Chronic disease Instead of looking at health & weight loss through the lens of restriction and deprivation, I'd encourage everyone to focus on equipping your body to function optimally so it creates a state of leanness, energy and vitality. When making food choices, ask yourself: Is this energy & nutrition or one without the other? In this series, I want to focus on 5 things I feel we need more of. In part one, I'll be focusing on essential fatty acids & vitamin D. Lets open our Bibles up to the Book of Luke this morning-Luke 10 (page 1028 of pew Bibles), as we have been going through that in a series. Im going to grab a chair here as I want to illustrate something from my life, a phenomena that Ive observed. Maybe this has happened to you. Again, I was a little late in passing the plate here, so I know there is a lot of activity going on and a lot of things happening. I want you to just focus in. Have you ever gone to a ball game, a concert or play, something like that, where there is close seating in the aisles, and you have to get up every time somebody goes by to buy popcorn or use the restroom? When I go to a ballgame, the Brewers, Cubs, Bears or Bucks-whatever it might be-and Im sitting there-somebody has to go by and I have to stand up-I just really struggle with that. I find that I all of the sudden become weak and kind of have a bad attitude. Ill stand up and Ill say things to myself like, You again? How many times do you need to go and use the bathroom? Maybe if you stopped drinking so much beer, you wouldnt have to go to the bathroom all the time. I sit back down, and then I have to get back up again, Of course, here you come again. Sure. I find myself getting a little irritated, especially if you have to stand up and sit down so many times in an inning. My knees hurt and my attitudes bad. Its up and down, and you just spilled your drink on me again. Here we go… But…when my team hits a homerun, and I say, Whoa! Yeah! I stand up and the pain is gone, Ive got all of this energy and strength. Its amazing that the seventh inning stretch comes, and I have to stand, Oh, you again. Okay, here we go. Then all the sudden I get weak again. Every time I stand up, its painful and hard. Why is that? I think thats a microcosm because I think its very easy for us to do things that are for ourselves, to do things that bring us pleasure, to do things that energize us. Sometimes when it comes to serving others, and doing things especially for people we dont know, its easy to get an attitude. Its easy to be a little lazy; its easy to be a little selfish, right? Youre inconveniencing me. Youre an intrusion on my space. I wish youd go away. I wish youd sit someplace else, and all these unpleasant, un-Christian thoughts come floating through your mind. Then when its something that involves you, when your team wins, your team scores, youve got all the strength and all the energy in the world. You might be drudging through some assignment or some chore or work, responsibility, and your best friend calls you and says, Hey, lets do some shopping. Lets go out to eat. Lets go to a movie. All of the sudden you have all this energy and strength. Where did that come from? Because we are by nature a self-absorbed people. Thats why serving comes by so difficult for us. Thats why its not a natural thing for you and me to be servants. Now this story were going to look at this morning is a story of the Good Samaritan. Jesus tells this story in response to a question. The man says, What must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus says, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself. Do this and youll live. Then he says, Well, whos my neighbor? Jesus conveys a parable to the Good Samaritan. Now I want you to know something. When we talk about the Good Samaritan, you and I always think about the Good Samaritan as pertaining to how we minister to our neighbor, how we show love to our neighbor. You know what? The story of the Good Samaritan is just about how much we love God as it is about how we love our neighbor. Jesus answers the question, and He says, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself. The parable that Hes about to tell is an illustration of both. Its an illustration of loving God, and its an illustration of loving our neighbor. It was in response to a question, a question that demanded a further explanation; so the parable comes alongside to explain this in action. Loving God and loving man, what does it look like? To love man, to help and to serve people is to love and to serve God. If you show kindness to people who are made in His image, youre showing kindness to God. When I was a new parent, every time I became a parent, our children were little (congregation laughing). People would come up to us, and theyd see them in the car seat, and theyd go, Oh, what a cute little baby. You know, when you say nice things to my child, youre saying nice things to me. When you show kindness to my child, youre showing kindness to me. That child is in my image. I would personally take offense if you came up and said, Oh! What happened? That is just one homely baby! I might take offense at that. If you say something about my child, you might as well say it to me. The way we treat others is a reflection of how we feel about God. Now, there are many ways that you and I express love for people. There are books written on that. Some of us are good at saying the words I love you. Others of us struggle with that. Some of us are able to touch and affirm through touch, and others of us struggle with that. For some their love language is time. They need to spend time. My wife, thats her love language. I can hug her till shes blue or tell her I love her, but if Im not spending time with her, she doesnt feel real loved. For some, its giving of gifts. For some, they express love though serving. The same thing is true in the realm of the spirit. You and I express our love for God differently. Im reading a book by Pastor Gary Thomas called Sacred Pathways this week. Sacred Pathways is an excellent book, and it talks about nine different pathways, nine different ways God has wired us to express our love for Him. Hes saying we tend to have the same prescription for every believer. Its like, Oh, express your love for God, what we think of-we worship, we sing. Thats just one way. For Janet, thats one of the most dominate ways for her to express her love for God is though song. For others of you, its when youre in nature. For others of you, its when your intellect is stimulated, and your mind is learning something new about God. For others of you, its when youre caring for people. There is a certain group of people here who feel most in touch with God and most attuned with the spirit when they are serving other people in His name. Thats when you feel His presence; thats when you feel His affirmation, when youre tangibly helping and serving other people. So this story is about loving God as well. This tangible way we express our love for God, and its a valid way, its just as valid as any other way of expressing our love for the Lord. Now, in this story, there are three men. One is a priest; one is a Levite; and one is a Samaritan. Samaritans, of course, were enemies of the Jews. There was a racial difference. There was a religious difference, so there was a lot of misunderstanding and disdain between the two peoples. It is very interesting that Jesus would choose the Samaritan as the hero of the story. The priest and the Levite, two men of God, [who] you would think would be the ones that would stop and help, are the ones who turn and walk away. You know, I ask myself, What are the reasons why one might do that? You know, if youve ever been involved in full-time ministry, or youve been involved in ministry to people as a volunteer intensively, one of the things youll find and experience is that people can burn you out because the needs just never stop coming. Sometimes people will abuse your kindness and your generosity. Sometimes you can get a little jaded in ministry; sometimes that can happen. I remember when we went to Universal Studios, and [we took] my youngest-she was about 3 years old- into the part of the park where its more little children oriented. On this ride, youd save E.T.; and on this ride you save Scooby Doo; on this ride you save Elroy Jetson. She kind of catches on to the theme, and she figures out whats going on. I remember us going up to our fourth ride and being excited, saying, Oh, now, this is going to be a great ride. She looked up and me, holding my hand, and she said-exact quote, Who are we going to save this time? All excited, you know Im all excited, and shes jaded at age 3. Who are we going to save now? Ive caught on. Somebody is going to be in trouble, and were coming to help them out. Sometimes in ministry, you can have that same attitude, Who needs my help today? Whos got the problem today? If youre not careful, you can find yourself getting a very hard heart towards ministry. Maybe these guys say, Oh, I dont want to be bothered today. I dont want to be inconvenienced today. But along the road comes a Samaritan, and he stops. Notice what he does. It says he stops, He took pity on him. But he does more than that. He bandages him, pours on oil and wine-the closest thing to medicine that he could have; put him on his own donkey, so he rode while the Samaritan walked; brought him to an inn and took care of him; and then after that gave money to the innkeeper and said, Look after him while Im gone. If you need more money, Ill pay you that when I come back. This man went the extra mile. You know, if youre going to be a servant, you have to be willing to go the extra mile. You have to know that it can get messy. You have to know that it can get costly. Its not easy investing in peoples lives. You drive by the interstate and see cars stranded all the time as youre driving. Usually, you just go on, right? Usually you just go your way. Youre busy; you have things to do. Somebody else will help them. I remember one time I wasnt in a hurry, and the man looked really destitute, so I stopped. I went and got him some gas, drove to the Oasis, got the gas; and as I was coming back, the gas can spilled on my back through my T-shirt. If youve ever had gas on your body before, I dont recommend it. It really hurts. Its not like getting water on there, believe me. There is some sort of reaction going on there, and its like a burn. For hours, I felt like my back was on fire. I could hardly put my back against the seat of my car. I came back; I paid for his gas; helped him get his car started and sent him on his road. That was an investment of my time. My time, my energy, my resources, and I got burned. That also was a microcosm, friends, because if you help somebody, theres a really good chance you could get burned. Should you help them anyway? Absolutely if youre doing it in the name of Christ. If youre doing it in the name of Jesus, youre doing it for God first and foremost and to express your love for Him first and foremost, but it will cost you. You have to know going into it. Its going to cost you of your time and your resources, your energies and your emotions. Theres a chance that you could get burned. Why do we have to do it anyway? Another reason why you and I are called to be servants in spite of those facts is what Jesus says at the end of the passage. (Luke 10:37, page 1028 of pew Bibles), The expert in the law replied, The one who had mercy on him. That was the neighbor. Jesus told him, Go and do likewise. Let me ask you a question: was this parable only for this man? Did He tell this parable only for his benefit? No. So when Jesus says, "Go and do likewise," who else is He talking to? Hes talking to us. Did he commit a sin? Do these two who walked by commit a sin? They didnt do anything, right? They didnt do anything wrong, did they? Thats the problem: they didnt do anything. You see, we tend to look at what are called the sins of commission-the things that we do-and we tend to focus on that. Sometimes we pat ourselves on the back because we obey the Ten Commandments; and we look at the list, and we check them over, Well, I didnt do that. I didnt murder anybody this week-the great Christian I am. I didnt do that. I dont lie. I dont cheat. I didnt commit adultery. I didnt steal. I didnt worship false gods. Boy, Im really doing good! You know, sin means to miss the mark. Theres another side of that sin coin that you and I dont like to talk about because its a side that usually you and I fail miserably at. See, on the other side, this side is the sins of commission, the things that we do that God has told us not to do. That is sin when we do those. The flip side of that coin are the sins of omission. Those are the things that God has told us to do that we have not done. We dont talk about that too often. In fact, some of you want us to change the subject right now. [Those are the] things that God has called us to do that we dont do. In the Book of Ezekiel 16:49 (page 833 of pew Bibles), Ezekiel is talking about the city of Sodom. We know Sodom was notorious for sin. This is what Ezekiel says, Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were, what? Arrogant. Have you ever been arrogant, prideful? Yes. Overfed? Have you ever been…? Never mind (congregation laughing). I know the answer to that one. And unconcerned? Have you ever been unconcerned, apathetic? Some of you are looking at me like, I dont know, and I dont care. Arrogant, overfed and unconcerned. So far, Im three for three. …and they did not help the poor and the needy. Do you see that? Their great sin: they did not help the poor and the needy. Its what they did not do that God held them accountable for. You see, in this story of the Good Samaritan, there are no bystanders. There are no spectators. Youre in the story. You are the traveler going down the road, lifes road; and know as you go down lifes road, there will be opportunities where God has called you to be the minister. These interruptions, these intrusions, or these initiations: it depends on how you look at it. For you to use the gifts, talents and passions to express your love for God and for your neighbor and stop and help. Use of your time, of your resources, of your energies: financially, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, minister to that one who has fallen. There are no bystanders and theres no neutral. Youre either a person who is stopping, or youre a person who is passing by. Youre either a person who is disobedient or a person who is obedient. Youre either a person who is committing a sin of omission or you are not. But this parable includes us. When He says, Go and do likewise, Hes talking to you and me. Now, how are you doing here? I dont need a raise of hands or anything like that. Just as you reflect on that, how are you doing here? Have there been some areas where you know you should stop? You know you should do something, but you dont? You pass on by because youve been burned, because youre tired, because youre preoccupied with other things, other commitments-youre busy? Those are excuses that God doesnt buy a whole lot. You know, you cant do everything, right? You cant minister to every need, every concern, but you can stop and do what the Lord tells you to do. If youre listening, youre watching, there will be times when God will tap you on the shoulder, and Hell whisper in your ear. He says, You right here. You right here. Sometimes youre heard that voice, and youre passed by anyway. Im asking you today go back. Im asking you to go back and just minister to them. Our teams are going to do something this summer. Its pretty radical, right? Theyre going to take some money, and theyre just going to go out and serve people. Theyre going to go to the gas stations and help people buy gas. Theyre going to say, This gas was provided to you by Faith Community Church youth ministry, and give them a card. Of course, theyre only going to be able to do that to one person, and then theyre going to be out of money, but thats the idea (congregation laughing). We can either buy one person gas or feed a thousand. Were trying to figure out what were going to do with that. I set a new personal goal at $58 this week to fill up my tank. I really believe if I just put my mind to it and accomplish it, I can go over $60. Pray with me that I can meet that goal. Im just really excited about that personal record that Ive set. One word of caution before we go, and I think its always important to talk about this aspect of it because there might be some of you who take this and run with it and get yourself in some trouble if youre not careful. Galatians 6:2 (page 1155), the Apostle Paul says, Carry each others burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Notice, it says carry each others. Its reciprocal. Sometimes I have a burden; sometimes you have a burden. We carry each others burdens. Its not a matter of you carrying everybody elses burden, and nobody carries yours-which means you have to communicate. A burden means a boulder, a heavy weight-something that is overtaking you that is very difficult for you to carry on your own. Its something out of the normal; its something out of the usual. Some of you boulder bearers out there, and you know who you are, you could be bent over in pain and somebody would say, You okay? Yeah, Im just fine. Dont worry about me, and youre carrying a boulder because you dont want to inconvenience. You know who you are. You need to start sharing, saying, This is a physical, emotional, financial, spiritual-whatever it is-boulder that Im carrying, and I need your help. You help each other through those difficult times that life brings us. In the next verse-Verse 4, it says, Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load. Well, which is it, Paul? We carry it or they carry it? Well, theres a difference. The word load means your everyday provisions. It means the things that you do to take care of yourself on a daily basis. The word could be associated with one of those sacks or bags we use to put your stuff in that youre going to need for the day; for your food and for your maintenance and upkeep-all the things youre going to need, your daily provision. Paul is saying, Everybody should take care of those themselves, but with our burdens, we should help one another. Do you know what its called if youre helping somebody else with their daily load that they should be doing? Thats called being an enabler. Thats called making somebody a co-dependent. Thats not what were trying to do here. Make that distinction. Paul is not contradicting himself. Paul says when circumstances come on, like this Good Samaritan-that man that he helped, when circumstances came on his life that were beyond his control, he needed the help of others. He needed intervention. Im encouraging you this week to walk with your eyes open and your ears open, watching and listening. Is there a need I can respond to? Or maybe theres something God has already tapped you on the shoulder for, and you have passed it by. Im encouraging you to do an about face, go back to that person or back to that situation and say, What can I do to help? Im here to serve. Make that investment of your time and your resources in the name of God, to show the love of God to the people who are made in His image. Will you commit to do that this week? A couple of you will? All right. Lets stand together as we close in prayer. Father, every time we read that parable, we think its a great parable about how to show our love for our neighbor. We recall as we read it in the context, You were talking about the love of God as well. So this parable is an illustration of both, loving man, loving our neighbor and loving You. In fact, to love our neighbor and to help those who have need is a tangible way that we express our love for You. Lord, sometimes weve been like the Levite and the priest, and weve passed by for whatever reason, but I pray we be like the Samaritan-we would take the time to stop, and we would invest ourselves to help carry that burden. It would be reciprocal, bear one anothers burdens, that we would open and share with people in our lives about what were going through. [Wed] ask for their prayer, for their support, humble ourselves to do that. We pray that You give it discernment since we cant help every situation we encounter along lifes road, that Youll point us to which ones You do want us to help. Looking at our passions, our gifts, our calling and our talents and abilities, that You will speak to us clearly and say, This is an area where Ive called You to serve. [I pray] that well serve You faithfully; even if we get burned, we will serve You faithfully; even if we get tired or when we get tired, we will serve You faithfully. It cost the Good Samaritan something to serve. Youve commanded us, Go and do likewise, not to just passively wait, but Youve called us to be actively looking and responding to those opportunities to serve You. Give us discernment in knowing the difference between a burden and a daily load of the people we encounter. Thank You for the things Youve taught us today from Your Word. Help us, Lord, as we go our way to be mindful of the things that weve learned and heard. Lord, I pray that even this morning, as some who have some burdens out there-maybe theyve been burying them alone- I pray that theyll come forward after service and pray with those here in the front. Theyll just come and say, You know what? I just need a brother or sister to stand with me in prayer about a situation Im going through, about a situation somebody else is going through. We just want to intercede on their behalf. We pray that theyd come, even this morning, and meet and pray with those here. Dismiss us from this service with Your blessing. Help us to be a light in a dark world for Christ. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
