Why do I say that? Sometimes you just have to breathe to lose weight. Sometimes we do have to process some emotions to finally starting winning the war on weight even when you are eating the salad! God created our bodies as the most amazing and phenomonal state of being. The way our nerves, cells, muscles, fluid and electrical system works is just mind blowing. HE is the ultimate artist and creator! I say it all the time, FUEL YOUR BODY not FEED YOUR EMOTIONS. I know in my own journey I still often feed my emotions. Even being a coach and even when I'm working everyday on myself, my nutrition and my movement. It's how I know you still need to hear it. One of the most fascinating things I have learned is how we how emotions in our belly. No wonder we eat to process it. God intended us to process our emotions and live a FREE full life! By: This Blew Up My Mind “When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it's called “fetal-maternal microchimerism”. For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother's body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too. Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream. Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart. The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby. How cool is that? This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant. It's incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive. Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave? Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that?” If you're a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there….Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them. This may not be my best episode, but it's PROGRESS! I'm finding my voice again! Today I read you my chapter in Becoming an Unstoppable Woman in Health and Wellness. I say in the episode, I'm going to read the chapter, then talk about. Well what happened... I read the chapter then rambled a bit and I refuse to re-record. Because these days my focus is PROGRESS over PERFECTION! I maybe finding my voice again but clearly my mind and voice havent lined up. So here's the skinny.... The point of this whole episode is Health and Wellness is a journey and sometimes ALL OUT WAR! We are WINNING that war when we learn what is best and healthiest for ourselves. So there are two things about my message that can get you in a little bit of an ackward place. First, I tell you all live your life outloud. Then I also say….. Dig Deep and find out your WHY! Why do you do what you do?, Why do you want to change? What do you value most? Figure out your own core values and stick to them. So here's the thing… I'm struggling with something right now that's caused me to want to not live outloud, it's caused me to want to run and hide from the world and truth be told has caused me to find my way to the bottom of many fast food drive thru bags. So when you think… I haven't heard much from Keatha lately, It's true I'm somewhat on sabbatical. I took my own advice and dug deeper to figure out WHY I was responding to certain situations the way that I was and why I was feeling so lost. What I found was that there was unresolved trauma from my past that triggered me in ways that maybe other l people wouldn't respond to in the same way. But more importantly, I found myself living incongruently to my own core values. one thing I have learned in my personal journey is that any time you are going against your own core values, chaos emerges. This is exactly what was happening, there were just things that go so deeply against my core values that my spirit and soul just reacted so badly. But understanding the WHY behind it allowed me to love myself and give myself some grace. The famous words of Jane Pilgner that have brought me so clarity is a statement she taught me in a class many years ago and if you are a client of mine and you've experienced an overeat, I often referred you back to this statement…. Well of course LOVE you feel _ insert emotion______________ because of __situation______. A lot of times that first feeling in the blank causes us to eat. Sad, lonely, disappointed, neglected, left off, alone, miserable, out of control… the list goes on and on. Just google emotion wheel and you'll get a ton of free ones, even YouTube videos on how to create your own. Of course, you are thinking, well just stay away from those situations. That's exactly what I did, For YEARS I avoided this type of situation. Unfortunately, recently I've been faced with the situation repeatedly. I found myself feeling traumatized and almost wounded and felt like I couldn't control my own environment to protect myself from this reoccurring feeling. One counselor described it as feeling like your being hit over and over or someone being shot over and over but in placed that weren't life threatening. It was true. The more I experienced it, the weaker I felt, the sadder I became, the more lost I was on the inside. I was fighting like HELL to work through it, but it was getting the best of me. It was during one of my podcast interviews when it hit me that I needed to figure out WHY I felt wounded and traumatized. Once you have your mind in this place, it's so easy to feel defeated and listen to the lies of the world and the enemy. It starts to compound and compound until I felt completely lost again. It's been several years since I felt this was and GOD WAS NOT HAVING IT. Since I've started my little sabbatical , God has shown up in ways to loving point out my own self sabotaging so to speak but also shown me all the good that I do bring to the world. Sisters this battle with our bodies and minds is ongoing an battle… It's an all out WAR! Sisters, If you can relate to any of this, I cannot stress enough the importance of working through your stuff. If you want to get to the bottom of your weight issues, your disordered eating, your relationship issues. You need to journal, you need to get some help from a professional. I've given you some excellent resources and access to some incredible life coaches that specialize in different areas, use them. I can coach your through weight loss, I can coach you through transition and maintenance but when deep seeded issues rear their ugly heads… you need more and it's my job to recognize that in you and even in myself! I'm taking my own advice and I'm going dig even deeper for the remainder of Lent. I want to show up in the world as the absolute best version of myself. That means, I need to spend a lot more time with God, journaling and resting. So as you hear some of the topics shift and episodes a little father apart… know that I'm here getting myself better and better to serve God and you as the best version of myself. So sister, never let anyone determine your core values, dig deep, live outloud without any reservation! EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US BRINGS GOOD INTO THE WORLD, even when we bring our ugly along. It's only through the work do we all get better together! Today, The Divorce Confidante- Joy Bartholomew joins me for a sister to sister conversation about overall health and how we can show up as our best self. Tis the season…RIGHT? This is supposed to be a season of celebrating love, peace, joy that comes from the birth of our Lord. Being grateful for all our blessings, appreciating all that we have and just a season of being thankful. Ok Sisters, here it is a holiday quick tip episode to ensure you don't gain those extra holiday pounds. It's the holidays and you're busy....let's make it quick! 1. Drink 16 ounces of water every day when you get up, especially on a holiday! 2. Drink 8 ounces of water with every meal 3. Eat several small meals - Don't starve yourself all day and go into the holiday meal starving! 4. Enjoy your friends and family. It's about relationships not the food! 5. Every choice matters. Stop and put down the fork multiple times. Give yourself some space to savor the bites and the conversations. 6. If you are going to several gatherings...Decide how you are going to eat at each one. VERY small meal at each or a different course at each gathering. 7. Get Picky about what you eat. Don't just eat it because it's there. Eat what you love and that serves your body well. 8. Use a small plate. If there isn't one available, don't let your food touch 9. THREE tablespoons or less of each item. NO MORE! 10. Wear tight pants... NO YOGA PANTS! 11. Water bottle in one hand and napkin in the other to prevent senseless grazing! 12. Chew sugar-free gum while you cook and after you are finished eating. Are you constantly in turmoil that leads to failed relationships and emotional eating? If you don't know what your own core values are, you can't live your life in peace. It's the lack of congruency within ourselves and how we are living that leads to the turmoil. Inner turmoil can lead to overeating and emotional eating. It is almost impossible to lose weight and live free if you are in inner turmoil. I'm never going to say it's not going to happen, but figure out your core values and life will get easier. When life gets a little easier, you can start to make those 1% daily improvements to reach your goals and lose weight. And in Elisa case, she changed her life and saved her marriage. We are co-authors in a new book called UNLEASH HER! You might hear a lot of buzz around this book and these women, and I'm humbled and honored to be in their circle. My chapter is called Dig Deep. It is about defining moments that I feel led me to start binge eating, overeating, secret eating, people pleasing and overall just using food to numb by emotions. Today on War on Weight, I have Michelle McCoy from the Treasured Wellness podcast. They evaluated over 25,000 people and concluded that by adhering to four simple lifestyle factors, you can reduce your risk of developing major chronic disease by 80%! Those lifestyle factors are: • No smoking • Have a BMI less than 30 • Perform three and a half hours a week or more of physical activity • Adhere to dietary principles such as a high intake of fruit, vegetables, whole grain bread, and lower your meat consumption Optimal and Ultrahealth™ Guidelines. Here are the key parameters we're aiming for: Systolic blood pressure 110–95 or less Diastolic blood pressure 75–60 or less Body mass index 24.9–19.5 (around 20 is ideal; no less than 18.5) Body fat 10% for men; 17–23% for women HDL (good cholesterol) 50–70 mg/dl Fasting blood sugar 75 mg/dl If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, this book is GOLD! On today's episode I'm being interviewed by one of my co-authors of our upcoming book UNLEASH HER! EEKK! YIKES!! Have you ever been excited and scared all at the same time? That's where I am right now. In my chapter, I talk about digging deep and finding some defining moments. Through the process I was able to identify many defining moments in my life that lead to my weight gain, binge eating and numbing my emotions. When you hear me say I had to face some issues that caused me to run to food over and over again, this is the kind of things I'm talking about. Sister, we all have them! I've not gotten to the point yet where I define myself as an author, but maybe a glorified journaler. Journaling works and I encourage you to find some journal prompts, take a free Heartwork journaling course or just do a good old fashion brain dump. That's right, just write everything that comes to mind and get it out of your head so you can think a little more clearly and your brain can have a rest. It's OKAY to want to lose weight! You cannot be healthy and be 50 pounds overweight. Hold onto your hat sister, this one just might make you stop and think. WHOA…. Fitness Teacher Gospel Teacher??? Really? Well, PREACH SISTER! I may preach a little in this episode, but I also challenge the skinny diet mentality in a reverse way. I hate that people make us feel like something is wrong with us because we want to be skinny. So I give you permission to chase skinny if that's what it takes to get you healthy. Bottom line, You cannot be healthy and be 50 pounds overweight. So just because in our minds we think and our words we say we want to be skinny, there's nothing wrong with you. Health is what we want, feeling good is what we want, not beating ourselves up day after day is what we want. And if honoring our bodies by taking care of it is what it takes… So be it! Weight loss will lead to healthy and your version of skinny might just be the byproduct. This may not be your favorite episode and I hope I don't lose you here, but I hope that it makes you stop and think about the you in 10 years from now. Being overweight, will lead to health issues. You can't live a long vibrant life loving and serving God and others if we are unhealthy in our body, minds and immobile. If we want to live in perfect health, we must drop the weight. Paper often represents things about us that weigh us down or make us thing poorly of ourselves. It can lead to added stress. For many, added stress leads to stress and/or emotional eating. Emotional eating leads to beating ourselves up, that leads to more stress, more avoidance of things we don't want to do and guess what?.... More overeating, less motivation to do more or better, more stress! This cycle can continue until we are 10, 20, 40, or even 100+ pounds overweight. So many of my clients find that cleaning up their environment makes them feel better about themselves and their health journey. Even more exciting, it's crazy to think that once you start losing some weight, you have more energy, you care just a little bit more and you actually are motivated to clean up the clutter. You don't need those clothes anymore, you're only looking to the future not your past. If you've gained weight, clear out the "skinny" clothes you that remind you that aren't that size anymore and trigger negative thoughts about yourself. You're not a failure because they don't fit and you don't need to beat yourself down over it every time you see it. If they are clothes you want to keep, take them out of your everyday closet immediately. When the time comes, you can re-evaluate if they still serve the current version of yourself. Girl, you are not alone! Do you ever wonder if your eating habits are normal or maybe there's a problem. It's possible you just overeat. But it's also possible that you are a binger. In this final mini episode of my interview with Maritza Parra, we talk more about sugar-free living, fueling our bodies and just being ok with emotions. Maritza gives us a simple act to try to process a feeling during an urge to overeat or drink. It's kinda brilliant! I want to hear how it works for you if you try it. Do you ever get in your own way? Goodness gracious was that ever one of my biggest issues before I completely revamped my mindset. Don't get me wrong, it's still my biggest issue BUT I have learned to fight that mental battle and keep it from showing up on the bathroom scale. I'm no expert other than I've been fighting the battle of binge eating for almost 40 years. Wow, that makes me sound old, but trust me I'm living a larger life in a smaller body without weekly binges. No kidding in the past two or three binges a week was very normal, now I'm happy to say I've learned how to handle it better by managing my emotions. Two to three binges a year is such a WIN!
