Episode 304 It seems the world is on heightened alert about the impact smartphones are having on our children's brains. But are we right to be worried? Jonathan Haidt's book the Anxious Generation has played a big role in this debate, with many researchers agreeing smartphones cause harm and action needs to be taken. But is there actually any scientific evidence to back all of these claims up? The “strongest evidence” for alien life was announced just a few weeks ago - but not everyone was happy with this discovery and it came under quite a lot of fire. The team that discovered this alien signal were analysing data from the James Webb Space Telescope. Now other researchers have looked at the same data and have come to different conclusions. But rather than proving critics right, it seems the evidence for aliens just got stronger. A digital oak tree is on display at Kew Gardens in London. Of the Oak is an immersive installation by art collective Marshmallow Laser Feast in collaboration with ecologists, biologists and researchers. The aim is to show the inner workings of the oak, to allow people to connect more deeply with it and to tune into “tree time”. Chapters: (00:32) Are smartphones causing mental illness in teens? Have you ever wondered what drives a person to excel in the complex fields of neurosurgery and global activism? Dr. Ruth Mitchell, a renowned neurosurgeon and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, joins Detangle for a heart-to-heart with me, Dr. Kinjal Goyal, sharing her incredible story that weaves together diverse cultural roots, medical innovation, and a tireless fight for nuclear disarmament. Our conversation journeys through Dr. Ruth's life, revealing the transformative power of generosity and opportunity, and how her personal narrative intersects with her professional endeavors, challenging and changing the world one incision, or international treaty, at a time.Navigating the professional world as a woman in high-stakes domains has never been straightforward, but Dr. Ruth's experiences shed light on the resilience and courage needed to close the 'authority gap'. This episode is not just a recount of triumphs; it's a candid look at the challenges faced and the emotional labor poured into breaking barriers. We also delve into the emerging role of AI in healthcare and its implications, emphasizing the necessity for inclusive practices in technology development, and the integration of psychology to improve patient care – something Dr. Ruth champions passionately. Finally, the episode takes a tender turn, discussing the idea of an emotional first aid kit, both literally and figuratively. Dr. Ruth and I explore the importance of mental health support pre and post-surgery, the influence of personality types on recovery outcomes, and how social media can serve as a tool for empathy and solidarity. These conversations underscore the vital role of human connection and the shared responsibility we hold for the welfare of children across the globe, urging listeners to act with compassion and informed conviction. Nuclear weapons have only been used twice. Now Russia has hinted they could be used again. In this podcast episode, Inside Geneva host Imogen Foulkes asks experts how big the threat is. “This is the reality of nuclear deterrence: that there is a nuclear armed country that can hold the rest of the world hostage,” says Alicia Sanders-Zakre of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).Have we forgotten how devastating these weapons are?“Blast, high-velocity projectile, trauma, burns, including bodies just melting into the ground,” says Ruth Mitchell of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).What happens if a small tactical nuclear weapon is used?“There is no small nuclear weapon. All nuclear weapons have devastating, lasting, generational humanitarian consequences,” says Sanders-Zakre.What are the chances of a nuclear-free world now?“The abolition of nuclear weapons seems to be much more difficult and problematic than the fact of just saying: ‘it's against human rights, it's against humanitarian law',” says analyst Daniel Warner.Get in touch! Today's guest is Ruth Mitchell, Operations Director at Elusive Brewing. Ruth has been with Elusive for just about a year now, but her promotion to Operations Director was relatively recent. As the role was still very new when we spoke, she tells us a bit about what her current day-to-day looks like, the vision for the future, and what her previous role as Head of Sales, Marketing and Events entailed. We then go all the way back to the beginning of Ruth's career in beer which has seen her work in sales roles for breweries including Adnams, Charles Wells, West Berkshire, Utopian and now Elusive. (She's also spent some time in gin sales, too!) As you'll hear, she's got a wealth of experience and knowledge to share, including advice on how to get started in a career in beer, the skills it takes to succeed in sales and much more. Finally, Ruth tells us what she enjoys most about being a part of the beer industry. (Just a quick heads-up Ruth's adorable sausage dog Bertie was in the room with her during our conversation, so you'll hear him chime in on occasion. Hopefully it's not too distracting!) Here's Ruth…

Ruth Mitchell is the author of the award-winning novel Deleted, described as "Inception meets 50 First Dates." She was born and raised in Salt Lake City and grew up writing plays for the neighborhood kids and “exploring” the woods near her home. In high school, she founded a Dead Poets' Society, as well as successfully campaigning to make the school's all-male service club accept female students. She met her husband, Bill, on their first day of classes at the University of Utah, where she graduated with a BA in journalism. Working for the Deseret News, she reported on wildfires, shootings and human interest stories. When her husband finished medical school, they moved with their two small daughters to Texas. In Dallas they learned to love good barbecue, bluebonnets and Texans. With a little Texan in tow (a boy!) they moved to San Diego. In California, they welcomed another son and put down roots. In addition to dreaming up new book ideas, Ruth loves long rambling conversations, baking, hiking, party-planning and running (slowly) along the coasts and canyons of Southern California. Join with me today to discuss the book, Deleted by Ruth Mitchell. Find out what my Rach Rating is for this book (hint, I LOVED it!), Cleanliness Score and More! Ruth Mitchell sent me her debut novel to give an unbiased review this book. I was worried...what if I didn't like the book?? Well I needn't have worried! One thing that I neglected to mention on this episode of the many things I enjoyed about this book was the love story in it. Very sweet and I felt like a giggly teenager again, instead of a mama of 4. ;) Make sure to follow me on instagram: @sugarplumbooks. Make a comment there and tell me what you thought of the book! Take a pic of yourself with your book and I'll pick my favorite picture to give you a shout-out in another episode! As Holbrook Jackson said, "Never put off till tomorrow the book you can read today." Now go stick your nose in a book! When everything around you seems like a mess, remember, things get better. Two years ago, Ruth was living in a tent with her family in their backyard with no washing machine, a single extension cord and a hot plate to cook meals. She was sending out her YA novel and receiving one rejection letter after another. Today, Ruth's home and yard are finished and her novel Deleted was just published. Join us for a discussion about failure, technology and gratitude. If you'd like to attend a launch party for Deleted (and you do! It's going to be so much fun!)
