Episode 107 of the Bees with Ben podcast is likely to be the last for two or three months, as spring has sprung and Ben is busy contending with his usual hectic workload at this time of year. This episode is also a little different, as Ben gives us some insight into his journey thus far and offers some advice for those possibly thinking of setting up a beekeeping business. First of all, it's hard work; Ben tells us that his next day off is likely to be Christmas Day, so you have to love the bees to be in this business. Back to beginnings. As a chef in the 90s, at one stage Ben used to work 90 hours per week, with two full-time jobs. Perhaps that was partly responsible for reinforcing the work ethic that is required as a beekeeper, but working nights with a young family certainly wasn't ideal. Ben had always been interested in strange critters, and in 2004 he was offered a job at Amazing Amazon, a shop in Melbourne that deals in unusual pets like reptiles, fish, spiders and the like. Four days into cleaning fish tanks, Ben was wondering why he had swapped cooking for celebrities for the bottom of the barrel in a pet shop, but he persevered and eventually became the manager of the business. In his downtime he ran a few bee hives, but by about 2008 he was getting right into bees, catching a few swarms, selling bees, etc. The bees started to take over, and Ben went from five days a week at the pet shop to four and then three. Then one day about six years ago, the owner of the shop wanted to talk to Ben about the wages bill, and Ben told him that he simply couldn't do it anymore. And with that he became a full-time beekeeper. Initially, things went well; the income from removing swarms was good, and Ben also started eradicating European wasps (people were often calling him for bees mistakenly, when they had a wasp infestation), and this necessitated accreditation with a pest control license. Incidentally, Ben believes it is important to charge for removal of swarms; it is, after all, a service which requires appropriate expertise and equipment, plus insurance, certifications, etc., all of which cost money. Anyway, after about Easter, things started to go quiet. Ben had been pouring money back into his business but was forced to max out a $40,000 credit card limit to make ends meet. Fortunately, soon it was September again, and along came some lucrative pollination jobs. Ben points to the importance of diversification, of finding your niche and of working with people and finding people you can work with - even if they are from completely different industries. He also learnt a valuable lesson from the only bad review he has received. One day, when it was hot and the bees were stinging, a man rang Ben's mobile for a chat. Ben made the mistake of answering the phone but his manner was (perhaps understandably) a little short and sweet. Consequently, now Ben doesn't answer the phone unless he can give the caller his full and undivided attention. Ben has some valuable tips about marketing and branding too; he says that every post he puts on social media is evaluated by three criteria; it must entertain, educate and inspire. He cautions against undervaluing both yourself and the bees (“If you're too cheap, it's a race to the bottom”) and underscores the value of excellent service, and of staying positive (“Don't think negative thoughts….be excited, because the job we do as a beekeeper is a marvelous job”). Ben says that he is still learning and evolving, and reveals that he once even went to comedy school in an effort to make his interactions with customers more memorable! www.bensbees.com.au

Podcast: The Mystery of Nubia By all indications, 2017 needs a podcast dedicated to Queen Hippolyta's "second," "other," "dark" daughter who debuted on November 7, 1972 in Wonder Woman #204, so we're "Introducing Nubia!" The soul sister of the Amazing Amazon went on to appearances in Wonder Woman #205-206, including a solo back-up story, plus cameos in Supergirl #9 and The Super Friends #25 before vanishing from comics entirely for twenty years (and actually closer to a quarter century if you discount a single page of one of those comics.) Despite barely escaping 1973 in comics, Nubia managed to make appearances on television and in toy form when that was an extremely rare accomplishment, and her origin has a massive impact on Wonder Woman's own. Nubia was a contender, and we argue that she still matters 45 years later on this episode! Nubia is one of the least heralded but most valuable creations of Robert Kanigher, and possibly his single most important contribution across twenty years as a writer/editor of the Amazing Amazon (depending on how much credit you extend him on Wonder Girl.) The world is still waiting for Nubia to be fully embraced as a key component of Amazonian lore! Welcome, welcome, welcome! You’ve found the place where Amazing Amazon sellers come together to get their Amazon private label sales questions answered by someone who’s becoming increasingly successful doing exactly that. This is the Friday “Ask Scott” session of The Amazing Seller podcast, where Scott Voelker answers your questions about selling on Amazon. The questions today are all over the board - what to do in a crowded market - how to go about setting up a brand to sell in a few years - what to do about sea freight issues - and how to use the new Amazon PPC. As you can see, there’s a lot to learn on this episode so stick around and hear Scott’s advice!   Does a crowded market automatically mean I shouldn’t try to introduce a new product?   Scott gets this question all the time and he says that whether or not the market is crowded is not the thing that matters. Why? Because many people will make the attempt at selling on Amazon on a whim, or will introduce a product into a hot market on a hunch without doing the research and work needed to ensure that their product is going to rise to the top in that market. What winds up happening is that those sellers have sent in lots of products to their Amazon warehouse and they’re just sitting there. So when you look at a category that has 100 competitors, it’s likely that many of those are not selling at all. So how do you discern the right thing to do? Scott’s got a clear answer to that question on this episode!   I want to set up an entire product line on Amazon for the purpose of selling the entire business 3 to 5 years from now. Do you have any tips for me?     It’s becoming more and more common that savvy sellers are recognizing the opportunities that could come of building a very competitive and popular brand for the very purpose of selling the entire business they’ve built sometime in the future. Why does that strategy work? Because there are many, many people out there who have the money to get into a good, steady-income business but don’t have the skill (or don’t want to learn the skill) to build that business themselves. It’s THOSE kinds of people who are ideal candidates for buying an Amazon private label business like this listener is asking about. So what tips and tricks would position this seller to best sell his business when the time comes? Scott’s got plenty to say about this and you can hear the entire thing on this episode.   My supplier is insisting that they will ship to my local port… but my city doesn’t have a port. What should I do?   Sometimes sourcing products from China or other foreign places brings with it a certain set of difficulties that you don’t always expect. One of those is the misunderstandings that come from the challenges associated with language barriers. It can become very difficult to communicate exactly what you want or need and you’ve got to know how to be clear, patient, and kind as you work out those details. This seller is running into that issue regarding shipping and isn’t sure what to do. Scott’s advice is pretty simple: You take the lead and tell the supplier how you want the product shipped to you. If they are unwilling you may need to find a new supplier. OR, if you want to go the sea route, Scott’s got a resource for you to consider. Check it out on this episode.   Amazon PPC has changed… do you know how to use the match types?   Amazon Pay Per Click used to be set up so that the only way you could position your ads was on a “broad” match type. That approach costs you more money for ads that aren’t going to convert and gets you less sales. But Amazon’s recent changes do away with that problem. Now you can do PPC campaigns on three match types, “broad,” “phrase,” and “exact.” A listener on today’s show wants to hear Scott’s approach to using those three match types and Scott’s not one to disappoint. His explanation should help anyone unfamiliar with Amazon PPC to sort out the differences and set up a campaign that will do exactly what they want.
