Imagine being a multi-talented artist, a composer who has crafted scores for TV and iconic films like Jeremiah Johnson and The Candidate. Now, imagine you're also an acclaimed actor, having graced countless movies and winning a Tony Award for Children of a Lesser God Picture collaborating with legendary directors such as Bob Fosse, Mike Nichols, and Stephen Sondheim. Oh, and did I mention your father was the renowned pianist Artur Rubinstein? Growing up, you played for distinguished guests like Stravinsky, Milhaud, and Lawrence Olivier. With that incredible background, you can only imagine how thrilling it was for me to chat with the extraordinary John Rubenstein! In Part 1, we delve into John's fascinating childhood and his initial steps into the world of composing. He began by writing for school projects and eventually transitioned into film scoring. John shares how the movie Chinatown influenced him and his special connection with trumpeter Uan Rasey, whose haunting solos left a lasting impact. We also explore the art of writing scores in Hollywood, discussing the nuances between composing for TV series and films. Then, we shift to John's acting career, highlighting his lead role in Pippin under the direction of the legendary Bob Fosse. We wrap up this segment by discussing the challenges of dealing with nerves and taking auditions. In Part 2, we take a detour to discuss a memorable evening when John starred in Children of a Lesser God at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, while his father performed at the Music Center. John reminisces about playing for George Szell and shares insights into his father's experience recording with Fritz Reiner. We conclude with a wide-ranging conversation covering John's favorite books and composers.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners?

This is a piece given to me by my high school piano teacher when I was 13 years old. For most of it the left hand has triplets while the right hand has sixteenth notes. It was a fun piece for me to play and may be the reason that I was chosen to be the accompanist for the Lake County Philharmonic when I was only 14 years old. However, the very best piano teacher I had, had been a Julliard piano professor but he got sick and was unable to play, so he transferred to DePauw University in Indiana. I was at Eastman School of Music then and a graduate of DePauw was getting her Master's degree at Eastman and told me about him. So I transferred there my junior year. He was super good! He made me count out loud when I played, and if I played louder than I counted he would yell at me - "Count louder! Count louder!" Consequently that loud counting enabled me to play much better. So not long ago I decided to go back to Fantaisie Impromptu and COUNT OUT LOUD. That really helped me play it even better than I had when I was young. So I've been playing it at Mayo and I played it on the new piano that we have at church and many people have appreciated it.The claims are that it was Artur Rubinstein himself who put Chopin's original on the map. Ernst Oster explained that the Fantaisie-Impromptu draws many of its harmonic and tonal elements from Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, which is also in C♯ minor, and from the third movement in particular. He continues that The Fantaisie-Impromptu is perhaps the only instance where one genius discloses to us—if only by means of a composition of his own—what he actually hears in the work of another genius.

On today’s date in 1916, at the Teatro Real in Madrid, “Nights in the Gardens of Spain,” a new work by the Spanish composer, Manuel de Falla, received its first performance. The first night’s audience didn’t know quite what to make of it—was it a piano concerto or a tone poem? Whatever it was, they didn’t like it much, apparently, but there was at least one musician in the audience who did: the young Polish piano virtuoso, Artur Rubinstein. “I had the opportunity to hear the first performance,” wrote Rubinstein in his autobiography, “I fell in love with this work and offered to play it at the last symphony concert of the season. Being constantly on tour, I learned it by reading the score on trains. At the rehearsal I played it by heart. De Falla and the conductor, Arbos, were pleased, but again the public did not respond—the work was too complicated for them, and it ended in a dead pianissimo. Nevertheless, Arbos and I were applauded warmly” But Rubinstein knew just what was required to direct some of that applause back to the composer. “I played de Falla’s ‘Fire Dance’ as an encore,” recalled Rubinstein,” which produced the usual ovation.”

Michael Berkeley's guest is Anne Sebba, the best-selling biographer of iconic women including Wallis Simpson, Winston Churchill's mother Jennie, Laura Ashley, and Mother Teresa. Her most recent book tells the stories of the women of Paris in the 1940s. She follows the lives of housewives, Resistance fighters, shop girls, prostitutes and celebrities, all the time examining the big, small - and often impossible - choices people have to make in wartime. And we hear part of an operetta composed by one of these women, imprisoned by the Nazis at Ravensbruck. Anne tells Michael about her controversial biography of Wallis Simpson in which she claims that we should have more understanding of her situation and more admiration for her as a person - and she argues that Wallis married Edward with great reluctance. We hear Artur Rubinstein playing Rachmaninov, which brings back memories for Anne of interviewing him when she was a young journalist, and she chooses music by Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Verdi. A passionate advocate for the celebration of women's lives and talents, Anne chooses performances by Robyn Archer, Maria Callas and Margaret Fingerhut. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

The camera tracks out the open window of Faustus’ study and shows us Faustus home. It is another winter; a new Christmas is to be celebrated. In Faustus’ garden grows his magic flowers in the snow. The Chorus speaks. ***Music excerpt is Rhapsody on a Theme from Paganini, by Rachmoninoff, pianist Artur Rubinstein.Image is a still frame from the silent movie of F. W. Murnau, Faustus.
The room in which we find ourselves appears by gradual suggestion, as if the light materially causes the appearance of things to be. They grow solid as the light delineates them, finding edges and then filling surfaces with substance and color. It begins from a beam of sunlight that reveals a window, framed in the center of the stage, against a vaguely opaque wall of black.***Music excerpt is Rhapsody on a Theme from Paganini, by Rachmoninoff, pianist Artur Rubinstein.
Chorus introduces the scene; we are inside a tavern across from the home of Faustus. Ralph is speaking in a corner, near the hearth, surrounded by the former students of Faustus, all attending what he is saying. The tavern keeper is eavesdropping.Music excerpt is Rhapsody on a Theme from Paganini, by Rachmoninoff, pianist Artur Rubinstein.Image is a still frame from the silent movie of Fritz Lang, Nosferatu
Beneath a tree in a summery woods beyond Württemberg; a creek is heard; the sun is setting off stage.A mountain is above and beyond the horizon of the forest, distantly, a pearly cascade plunges from its peak and where it crashes a mist rises. This is the very place whence the adventure began.***Music excerpt is Rhapsody on a Theme from Paganini by Rachmoninoff, played by pianist Artur Rubinstein.
