The students mention their personal experiences with shadowing and how it influenced their career decisions.  The students emphasize the importance of shadowing multiple specialties to determine personal preferences. They emphasize that understanding other specialties is valuable even for those pursuing podiatry, as it helps in comprehending the body's other systems and treating patients holistically. The students note that many podiatrists they have worked with and shadowed are incredibly satisfied with their careers. While they acknowledge that satisfaction can be found in other specialties as well, they observe this as a common theme within the podiatry profession. They also mention that students from all schools of podiatric medicine are incredibly happy with their choice to pursue podiatry. In this episode, we discuss the importance of students taking advantage of opportunities for involvement and support from organizations like APMSA. Dr. Scherer did his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami, he attended Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine graduating in their inaugural class in 1989. He finished his surgical training in California before returning to South Florida to go into private practice. In this episode of Dean's Chat, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen is joined by Dr. William Scherer, the Senior Podiatric Medical Advisor for Backo Diagnostics. Dr. Scherer shares insights from his career and discusses the generous sponsorship provided by Bako Diagnostics in the podiatric medicine field. In the episode, Dr. Scherer underscores the importance of identifying a problem to solve or a service/product to provide to achieve business success. He acknowledges that this may sound simple, but it is the key to success. Dr. Scherer suggests that watching shows like Shark Tank can be beneficial in understanding this concept, as the entrepreneurs on the show either solve a problem or offer a desirable service/product. Passion and expertise are also highlighted as crucial elements for success. Dr. Scherer emphasizes that his focus has always been on being passionate about his idea or product, rather than prioritizing monetary gain.  Dr. Scherer views making money as a byproduct of passion, hard work, and energy. Dr. Scherer cautions against solely aiming to become a multi-millionaire, as this narrow focus can lead to failure. Instead, he advocates setting a goal to create a new product or service and diligently working towards it, which may ultimately result in financial success. Furthermore, Dr. Scherer discusses the necessity of embracing risk in entrepreneurship. He acknowledges that as he's grown older, his risk tolerance has diminished slightly. However, he recognizes that entrepreneurs possess a unique ability to tolerate risk and invest time and effort into ventures that may or may not yield financial benefits in the future. We do some professor shout-outs and discuss student services, extracurricular activities, and student life at each school. Dr. Jensen asks the students questions, giving them a platform to discuss their educational experiences and give listeners a glimpse into what it's like to study podiatric medicine at Barry University. The episode also highlights Valentina's achievement as the recipient of a year's tuition scholarship sponsored by APMA and PICA. Tune in to learn more about the world of podiatric medicine and the journey of these aspiring podiatrists. In this episode, the speakers delve into the significance of mentorship in the field of podiatry. They acknowledge that approaching doctors for mentorship can be intimidating, but they emphasize that doctors are just regular people. Encouraging prospective students to take the leap, they highlight that doctors are usually happy to have students shadow them. They firmly believe that once students decide to pursue podiatry and are accepted into a program, they should give it their all and have faith in themselves.  The students mention that Barry University offers a small class size, fostering personal connections between students and professors. Overall, the episode underscores the importance of mentorship and urges students to overcome their fears and seek out doctors for shadowing opportunities. Valentina highlights one of the aspects she loves about podiatry: its flexibility. She explains that podiatrists have the opportunity to specialize in different areas and work in various settings, including hospitals, VA centers, and private practice. This flexibility allows podiatrists to choose the work environment that aligns with their interests and career goals. Whether they prefer a hospital setting, working with veterans in VA centers, or establishing their own private practice, podiatrists have a range of options available to them. This adaptability enables podiatrists to tailor their careers to their preferences and provide care to patients in diverse settings. https://www.barry.edu/en/academics/podiatric-medicine/ Dean's Chat Website  Dean's Chat Episodes  Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine?  Become a Podiatric Physician

Dean's Chat host, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, is joined by Dr. Mario Cala, from Miami, FL. Growing up in Cuba under an oppressive regime, Mario worked hard to become a dentist. Working under unimaginable conditions and circumstances, being essentially a “political refugee”, the only dentist serving a community of 100,000 people, Dr. Cala finally made it to the USA in 2003. A story of grit, determination, and a testing of the human spirit, his story is incredible! A great reminder of the wonderful opportunities available to all in the United States of America. Dr. Cala graduated from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 2008, completed his surgical residency training at Mercy Hospital with Dr. Tom Merrill, then did a Sports Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship with Dr. James Losito. Dr. Cala discusses his family (he is married to fellow podiatrist, Dr. Natalie Mendez), his practice, training residents and students, and his mission work around the world. Dr. Cala shares his journey from growing up in Cuba and being trained as a dentist, to ultimately graduating as a doctor of podiatric medicine. Tune in to hear his fascinating and heartwarming story. In Cuba, dental school spots were limited, with only a few schools available throughout the country. This resulted in intense competition, with thousands of applicants vying for just 21 positions. Dr. Cala had to excel academically, maintain exceptional grades, and pass a rigorous entrance test to secure a place in dental school. After completing four years of dental school in Cuba, Dr. Cala began practicing as a dentist. Initially, he worked in the city, but later he was assigned to a rural area where he had to attend to 30-40 patients every day, Monday through Friday. This experience proved to be challenging as he had to work with inadequate instruments. Dr. Cala's journey continued when he left Cuba and immigrated to the United States. He enrolled in the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine and successfully graduated in 2008. Following his graduation, he underwent a three-year surgical training program at Mercy Hospital in Miami. Subsequently, he pursued a fellowship in sports medicine and reconstructive surgery. Then, they delve into a host of other topics including, ideas for research, conducting research, writing papers, novel innovations, patents, and podiatric medicine as a career.  An interesting discussion involving young, successful practitioners who initially studied at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. The episode kicks off with a discussion about how Dr. Highlander and Dr. Rushing were introduced to podiatric medicine, their time at Barry University, and their residency experiences. Dr. Jensen shares a story about successful doctors being like freight trains and expresses his pride in their achievements. Tune in for more insightful conversations on podiatric medicine. In this episode, Dr. Jensen, Dr. Highlander, and Dr. Rushing emphasize the advantage of being a student with more time compared to those in practice who have to juggle family and other responsibilities. They stress the importance of utilizing this time to absorb knowledge and delve into topics related to their profession. They believe that as a student, it is crucial to give 100% effort and dedication to establish a strong foundation in their field. They also mention the significance of momentum, whether positive or negative and express gratitude for starting their studies with good momentum. This highlights the importance of taking full advantage of the available time as a student to learn and acquire as much knowledge as possible, laying the groundwork for a successful future career. Another key point discussed in the episode is the value of building connections with patients and demonstrating genuine care to earn their trust and loyalty. They acknowledge that doctors can sometimes become overwhelmed with busy schedules and numerous patients, but they emphasize the need to prioritize the patient's experience and make them feel valued. They highlight that when patients perceive a doctor's genuine concern, they develop a natural intuition and are more likely to remain loyal. Even in the face of mistakes or challenges, patients who trust and feel connected to their doctor will stand by them and work through the difficulties together. Dr. Jensen, Dr. Highlander, and Dr. Rushing also express the rewarding nature of their work in helping patients and witnessing tangible benefits. Unlike certain medical specialties where losses may be more common, they mention that their profession allows them to get patients back on their feet and improve their quality of life. They express gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives and share anecdotes of receiving cards, gifts, and even monthly carrot cakes from grateful patients. Despite seeing thousands of patients each year, they believe that the impact they have on each individual's life is something that will be remembered and cherished forever. Al Nicoletti kills it on Florida Probate, going above and beyond for clients. Formerly educated and graduated from the University of Miami (Bachelor of Arts in Music and Minor in Business Law) and Barry University School of Law (Juris Doctor), Al is a Florida Bar Attorney with the capability of handling cases across the state and headquartered conveniently in Jacksonville, Fl. Specializing in Real Estate Law, Al serves investors, business owners, contractors, landlords alike regarding Probate, Probate Litigation, Foreclosure Defense Litigation, Trust Administration, Wills, Trusts, Estates, Personal Injury, and much much more. Al's success has been driven by the desire to serve each client with the attention they deserve, going above and beyond to find the most creative solutions, even if it takes an extra trip to the courthouse to see a Judge. Episode Highlights:- Probate is a legal process that is required in Florida to transfer the title of a property from a deceased person to her or his heirs so that the heirs can legally sell and convey the property. - Probates start at a cost of approximately $2,500.00 and increase from there depending on the time and complexity of each case. Al is able to complete a simple probate within 2 to 8 weeks.- Probates are often a great tool to unlock value in a deal that other investors might walk away from. They can often solve very large title issues.- Quiet title is a longer, more expensive lawsuit that notices every possible party that may have rights to a property and extinguishes them from the chain of title if each party does not respond within a specific time period.- Adverse possession is when someone can take ownership of a property if they have maintained and added value to the property for a period of at least 7 years in the State of Florida. For other states, this 7-year time frame may vary. Adverse possession can be bifurcated into those cases that have the color of title (the person seeking ownership of the property is on a deed, judgment, or court order) and those with no color of title (the person seeking ownership of the property is NOT on a deed, judgement or court order). For cases where there is no color of title, the person must prove that they have been paying taxes and must file a tax department of revenue form within 30 days after the 7 year anniversary of paying taxes. If the person has color of title, she or he does not need to prove that they have been paying taxes.Helpful Links:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/flattorneynicoletti/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/attorneynicoletti/?hl=enYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjBxmuAXQBJiQJKHR-GU4wwThe Al Nicoletti Show podcasthttps://alnicoletti.com/Best Way to Contact Al:Phone: (904) 999-0053Email: al@alnicoletti.com

Interview Start Times: Trita Parsi - 02:22 Nadia Ahmad - 27:14 On this edition of Parallax Views, we have two interviews relating to U.S. foreign policy. First, up Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft co-founder and executive vice president Trita Parsi joins us to discuss how U.S. foreign policy needs a change. For Parsi, that means a shift towards a foreign policy of restraint that rejects militarism and economic warfare like sanctions. He argues that U.S. Grand Strategy is not worked out well for the U.S. as D.C.'s "Blob" adherents of the "Forever Wars" in the Middle East have claimed they would. The disaster of Afghanistan, he argues, is not a repudiation of restraint, but an argument for it. Additionally, Parsi also addresses claims that the Quincy Institute is "isolationist" and takes issue with the U.S. foreign policy Establishment's lack of referring to diplomacy before forms of warfare.   Then, Nadia Ahmad, a law professor at the Barry University School of Law, joins us to discuss her Common Dreams op-ed "The US Endgame in Afghanistan Was Mineral Extraction, Not Democracy". Also, Nadia chimes in on what can be done to help the Afghan people now and launches a criticism of those who ignore the question, "Should we have occupied Afghanistan in the first place?". We discuss the mining companies that Nadia argues the U.S. acted as security guards for in Afghanistan and the threat of sanctions against Afghanistan. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views!

Employment law is a very pernicious law type and if you run a company then you need to know what you are and aren't allowed to do with your employees. If you're concerned that your business isn't keeping within the bounds of what it legal as far as hiring, firing, and keeping a positive workplace, then having the ability to ask questions of someone who practices in employment law is a good way to go. Louis Montone of The Leach Firm is an employment law attorney in Orlando and spends this episode discussing his work on the Plaintiff's side and how that can affect those running a business. After all, the best offence is a good defense, and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you're ever worried you or someone in your company is doing wrong, you can always call or email Louis for advice and confirmation that you're not in the wrong. The best advice can usually come from someone you're on the other side of an argument with. Louis Montone has practiced employment law for nearly his entire career as an attorney. Louis has extensive experience representing clients on claims involving all forms of discrimination and harassment. Louis also has extensive experience on claims involving retaliation, whistle-blowing, and violations of complicated wage and hour laws. Louis has primarily represented individuals, but has substantial experience representing businesses as well. Now, working exclusively with individuals, Louis is able to use what he has learned from both sides to help his clients resolve their employment issues. In fact, Louis has developed a reputation for skillfully resolving complicated legal disputes. He partners with his clients to implement cost-effective strategies and then aggressively pursues favorable results. Whether negotiating or litigating, Louis keeps his clients’ best interests in mind. Louis believes in educating his clients on the legal process to help them ease the understandable anxiety involved in legal disputes. Louis’ dedication to employment law started while he was still a student. While only in his second year of law school, Louis interned for a local school board working directly with its labor attorney. Louis also interned with a private employment firm while still in law school. Louis continued pursuing his interest in employment law when he founded his law school’s first student organization dedicated solely to employment law. Louis was elected and proudly served as the group’s first President. For his efforts, Louis was awarded the Florida Bar’s Outstanding Labor and Employment Law Student his final year of law school. On January 10, 2018, the Supreme Court heard argument in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute, a case involving a dispute over the process for removing inactive voters from voter registration lists in the State of Ohio. The National Voters Regulation Act of 1993 (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) require that States maintain their lists of registered voters in such a way as to ensure proper removal of individuals no longer eligible to vote for certain reasons, such as a felony conviction. In addition, the State of Ohio has undertaken steps to ensure inactive registrants are still living at the address at which they are registered to vote. The principal way Ohio does this is by comparing names and addresses contained in its own voter registration database to the National Change of Address (NCOA) database generated from U.S. Postal Service data. Ohio’s Secretary of State then provides each county’s Board of Elections (BOE) with a list of registered voters who appear to have moved. The BOE thereafter sends each of these voters a postage-prepaid forwardable notice on which the voter must indicate whether he or she still lives at the address of registration. Recipients of this notice are subsequently removed from the voter registration list if they (1) do not respond to the confirmation notice or update their registration, and, (2) do not subsequently vote during a period of four consecutive years that includes two federal elections. Ohio has also implemented a “Supplemental Process,” however. Under this process each BOE compiles a list of voters who have not engaged in “voter activity” for the past two years (meaning filing a change of address form with a state agency, casting an absentee ballot, voting in person on election day, or casting a provisional ballot). The BOE sends these registrants a confirmation notice similar to the one used in the NCOA process. Voters sent a confirmation notice are removed from the rolls if they subsequently fail to vote for four years and fail either to respond to the confirmation notice or re-register. The A. Philip Randolph Institute and other affiliates sued Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted in federal district court, alleging that Ohio’s Supplemental Process violated the NVRA and HAVA, and seeking an injunction reinstating voters removed from the state registry under the Supplemental Process. Although the Secretary amended the confirmation notice format during the course of the litigation, neither the original version nor the revised version attempts to inform recipients who have moved how properly to register to vote in their new district. The district court denied relief and gave judgment in favor of the Secretary. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, however, reversed that judgment and remanded the case for further proceedings. The Supreme Court then granted certiorari to address whether Ohio’s Supplemental Process runs afoul of NVRA and HAVA.To discuss the case, we have Michael Morley, Assistant Professor of Law at Barry University School of Law.

On December 8, 2015, the Supreme Court decided Shapiro v. McManus. In this case several Maryland citizens sued state election officials claiming that a 2011 redistricting plan violated their rights to political association and equal representation under the First and Fourteenth Amendments. Although federal law normally requires such claims to be heard by a three-judge federal court, a single judge dismissed the suit for failure to state a claim, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit affirmed. -- The question before the Supreme Court was whether a single-judge federal district court may determine that a claim governed by the Three-Judge Court Act is insubstantial, and that three judges therefore are not required--not because it concludes that the complaint is wholly frivolous, but because it concludes that the complaint fails to state a claim under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 12(b)(6). -- By a vote of 9-0, the Supreme Court reversed the judgment of the Fourth Circuit and remanded the case. Justice Scalia delivered the opinion for a unanimous Court, holding that the citizens’ redistricting challenge was not so insubstantial that it could be dismissed by a single judge, and should have been considered by a three-judge Court. -- To discuss the case, we have Michael T. Morley, who is Assistant Professor at Barry University School of Law.

But lately, commentators and governments have applied the concept to International Criminal Tribunals, the defense counsel's tactics challenging the detention of al Qaeda suspects in Guantanamo Bay, and as indicated in the quote above to the controversial Goldstone Commission Report. This symposium and Experts Meeting, featuring two-dozen leading academics, practitioners, and former government officials from all sides of the political spectrum, will examine the usefulness and appropriate application of the "Lawfare" concept.
