Catherine Segurson is the founding editor of Catamaran. She's a painter, videographer and creative writer who graduated from the Master of Fine Arts program at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Prior to founding Catamaran 12 years ago, she worked at both Zeotrope and ZYZZYVA literary magazines. California-based Catamaran focuses often on the life of the artist, and even more frequently on nature and the environment. The first of the essays discussed in this episode is “What Would Odysseus Do?” by Melanie Faranello. Her psychiatrist father, a Greek man, was always urging his patients to be bold and take on risks. His daughter, the author, does likewise by daring to write her dad imaginative letters as a girl, supposedly seeking his clinical advice. In “Ten Charms Against the Future” by Steve Wing, the first five vignettes offer examples of what each of the five senses offer in appreciating nature. Sight and sound remain vital as this sensual essay ends with the author's whispering the word “shelter” repeatedly. In “Deserts” by Charles Hood, the honesty and obstinacy of harsh, open landscapes the world over gain the spotlight. What other essay will take you from Islam to atomic bombs and space aliens so adroitly? In “In the Beginning Was the Tree,” Patricia Canright Smith goes from confessing, “I was never a fan of trees,” to “I wish I spoke Tree” based on visiting the world's tallest, largest, as well as oldest tree, all three of them located in California.   For the first time ever, parents going through IVF can use whole genome sequencing to screen their embryos for hundreds of conditions. Harness the power of genetics to keep your family safe, with Orchid. Check them out at orchidhealth.com. Today Razib talks to geneticist Erich Schwarz, a Research Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University  since 2012. Schwarz has a molecular biology degree from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Caltech. After working with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster in graduate school, he switched to the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, and has continued studying nematodes ever since. After helping to found the C. elegans genome database WormBase (wormbase.org) in the early 2000s, he began sequencing and characterizing the genomes of several nematode worms other than C. elegans, either because they are biologically informative or because they are worldwide parasites. His current work includes using the genome of Ancylostoma ceylanicum to help devise an anti-hookworm vaccine. Schwarz explains why C. elegans, often called “the worm,” has been so useful in developmental and molecular genetics, and its role in the career of the late Nobel laureate Sydney Brenner. With a simple anatomical structure, every single one of the 1,000 cells of  C. elegans has been mapped and detailed. Despite its small size, this organism has spawned a research community of thousands, documented in Andrew Brown's In the Beginning Was the Worm: Finding the Secrets of Life in a Tiny Hermaphrodite. In the age of hundreds of thousands of human genomes, Schwarz explains the decades-long period in the late 20th century when biological research was dominated by “model organisms,” simple and easy-to-experiment-on animals, plants and bacteria that could eloquently and plainly elucidate universal and essential mechanisms of function and structure.  Razib and Schwarz also discuss the future of model organisms in a genomic future, when high-throughput data analysis can supercharge decades-long experimental projects. Ultimately, the future is not likely to see model organisms set aside, but rather to witness them merged into the broader research community in human and medical genomics which has been driving technological changes in sppedspeed and volume of data collection.

Why do so many Christians and evangelicals in particular love C.S. Lewis so much? What is it about him that transcends borders of culture and denominational and theological tribes? Today's guest is historian Mark Noll. Mark and Travis talk about C.S. Lewis and his reception by Americans in the early to mid part of the 20th century. Unlike any author before or since, Lewis tapped into the imagination with the truth that people could grab a hold of and understand. Join Travis and Mark as they sift through Lewis' reception by Catholics, Protestants, and the mainstream media. It's a conversation that will stimulate your faith and appreciate God working through him. Mark is one of the leading church historians in the English-speaking world. Recently retired as the Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame and before that, he served as Professor of History and Theological Studies at Wheaton College. He taught courses on American religious and intellectual history, the Reformation, world Christianity, and Canadian history. The Challenge of Christian Nationalism with Mark Noll and Vincent BacoteAs the lines between faith, politics, and patriotism have become, in some quarters, increasingly blurred, it is increasingly important to understand the origin, ideas, and consequences of Christian Nationalism — what it means, why it matters, and how best to respond.“Responsible Christian patriots try to show how Christianity can be a service to the nation; extreme nationalists make Christianity a servant of the nation.” - Mark Noll“If you think about the cross: patriotism, rightly construed from a Christian point of view, will put the flag at the foot of the cross. Christian nationalism wants to drape the [flag] over them. So is God serving your country, the sponsor of your country, or are you, as a Christian, operating wherever you are and having loyalty, but not your primary loyalty to your country over God?” - Vincent BacoteWe hope you find this conversation insightful and helpful as you consider the state of our culture and shared political life, and your role in reviving responsible Christian patriotism. This podcast is an edited version of an Online Conversation recorded in June of 2021. The second part of our conversation where Travis and Mark continue their discussion of evangelicalism. What happens when what we claim we believe doesn't match up with the way we live? When we claim to believe in a new birth through Christ but still cling to beliefs, ways of looking at the world and even actions that are a lot worse than problematic? What caused evangelicalism to become so politicized in the US? should we even call ourselves evangelicals anymore? If you thought part one of my conversation with Mark Noll was complicated, well, I hate to say it, but it's going to get more complicated. We welcome Mark Noll to the show! Travis and Mark discuss evangelicalism, what it is, who fits the label, and what the label means globally speaking. The term "evangelical" has become ubiquitous, with it being coopted by various groups and media to the point that some no longer want to use the term. Should we use it? What does it even mean? And what does it mean for us today? It would be lovely if the lines were nice and neat, but almost like everything else in our world today, it's complicated. Poet, translator and cultural critic Anthony Esolen joins the podcast to discuss his book, In the Beginning Was the Word: An Annotated Reading of the Prologue of John. 'In this extended meditation, Anthony Esolen looks, phrase by phrase, at the majestic Prologue to the Gospel of John, which with good reason he calls "the most influential paragraph in the history of man." He unfolds its theological richness by showing how the Apostle John has in mind, not only what he saw Jesus do and heard him say, but also the whole witness of Scripture before the time of Jesus, and the way the young Church proclaimed him. A unique feature of this remarkable work is how Esolen "hears" (and we with him) the Hebrew/Aramaic underlying John's Greek (which was not his mother tongue), echoing those languages in such a way that, all at once, what we thought could never be more profoundly expressed bursts forth in a renewed poetic splendor that brings into ever keener relief the whole panorama of the theology of the God-Man. Esolen's decades-long immersion in Christian poetry and Scripture uniquely positions him as a guide to the astonishing and life-changing "poem" of the Prologue. He says it best: "My hope is not only to illuminate what John wishes us to hear, but to show that, when it comes to this poetry, John is not the originator; he is, rather, the beloved disciple who caught the habit from the Lord Himself."' Carl welcomes a rare participant into today's discussion: a former student still willing to acknowledge the experience! Kyle Davis is an American serving in South Africa as the Bible Translation Fellowship executive director. Kyle asserts that there are over 7300 languages in the world, yet a complete translation of the Scriptures is available in only 10% of those tongues. Such sobering statistics compel Kyle to provide support for those who make Bible translation their mission. As many within the Church are moving away from the written Word toward narrative and storytelling, Davis reminds us that God gave us a Book, and all literate language groups need to learn from its text. Abigail - Biting My Nails (1976) Co-written by John Phillips and his wife at the time, Genevieve Waite. Abigail was a sex symbol in Australia, and she appeared in Mel Gibson's first film, "Summer City" in 1977. She played the part of "woman in pub".    Barclay James Harvest - Child Of The Universe (1974) Barclay James Harvest - Loving is Easy (1978) Barclay James Harvest - Mocking Bird (1971) I don't get how a band like this got to record for such a long time. They really do rely on cliché after cliché. The Moodies are very similar, but there was a kind of charm in their records that just doesn't exist here. It's like a cross between Trans-Siberia Orchestra and America.  Devo - Mongoloid (1977) Band name subtitled "The D-Evolution Band" on labels. "Jocko-Homo" - from the soundtrack of "In the Beginning Was the End.. (the truth about DE-EVOLUTION)" a film by Chuck Statler. Chuck Statler, arguably the godfather of the music video, is a pioneer who directed music films for upstart record labels and emerging superstars like Elvis Costello, Madness, and DEVO before MTV’s existence.  Electric Light Orchestra - Beatles Forever (1982) Jeff Lynne: "It's 'cause it's so fawning, y'know. It's so over the top, y'know. Um... maybe one day it'll come out. I'd like to sort of redo it or something." Recorded for their Secret Messages album, which was originally intended to be a double album. This track didn't make it onto what turned out to be another 4/4 sunny dirgefest. I didn't even buy their last record.  In Buffalo, there used to be a TV station (1977-78) called MICR, on which you could see local announcements being posted bulletin-board style, in rolling text on a screen. While that was happening, a guy would spin tunes. So...a guy was playing a song that seemed to reach into my primordial soul. It was like a dream that came true. It was "One Summer Dream" by Electric Light Orchestra. I called the DJ and he (Bill Elliot maybe?) obliged me, live on TV, with 3 or 4 more songs by this band. I remember he played "Fire On High" which I immediately recognized as the intro music to CBS Sports Spectacular (a competitor to Wide World of Sports on ABC). Thus began my 4-year allegiance to all things ELO. I scarfed down their entire discography. Learned much. I know the year because he told me that their new album was coming out soon. A double album! I just liked the sound. Those doubled Ovation guitars, the safe arrangements, the real orchestra. It really inspired me/us the same way Rush, King Crimson, The Beatles had.  Ella Fitzgerald - It's Up To Me and You (1968) She didn't write too many songs herself, but she DID write this one, a paean to MLK, in the wake of his murder.  Barclay James Harvest - Beyond The Grave (1975) Genevieve Waite - Biting My Nails (1974) Geneviève Waite, a South African actress, singer and former model, married John Phillips on 31 January 1972, and they had two children, Tamerlane Phillips and Bijou Phillips. They divorced in 1985. She died in 2019. Listening to this album reminds me of listening to the Gayle Moran album I Loved You Then...I Love You Now. The feeling that I am the only person in the world listening to this at this particular moment. But no more! Now YOU are listening as well.  Devo - Mongoloid (1978) Album version  Genevieve Waite - Love is coming back (1974) Genevieve Waite - Times of Love (1974) Gunhill Road - 42nd Street (1971) Gunhill Road or Gun Hill Road. Gunhill Road issued one album on Kama Sutra Records, which was produced by Kenny Rogers. The album was issued twice because at the time, the drug references made in the song 'Back When My Hair Was Short' were frowned upon. So a new version was recorded, and the album was reissued with different sequencing. To no effect. Except for the Top 40 hit. Which is to say, it reached #40.  Gunhill Road - Back When My Hair Was Short (1972) Original nasty version.  Gunhill Road - Baked Bean Band (1971) Genevieve Waite - Mr. Blue (1974) Paul McCartney - I'll Give You a Ring (1982) Renegade Soundwave - Biting My Nails (1989) The Primitives - The Ostrich (1964) Lou Reed's first group with John Cale was the Primitives, a short-lived group assembled to support an anti-dance single penned by Reed, "The Ostrich". I never liked Lou Reed, Nico, The Velvet Underground, or anything related. I think that "Walk On The Wild Side" would have been another joyless dirge if it were not for my man Bowie. On Pickwick Records whaaaaa? John Phillips - Let It Bleed, Genevieve (1970) From the only record he released in his lifetime, The Wolf King of LA.   John Phillips - Mr. Blue (1975?) Recorded with members of the Stones.  The "bands" Tribe and King's Road made soundalikes for the Pickwick label, and they are notable for their ham-handed attempts to capture the energy of the original "happenings" with fake crowd noise and announcements. I love them.  Tribes - I Think I Love You (1970) Tribes - Mama Told Me Not To Come (1970) Tribes - Mississippi (1970) Tribes - Question (1970) In the tradition of... Barclay James Harvest - Taking Some Time On (1970) These two record covers.  So THIS was the record we had when we were kids. What a scam!! The Tribes became Tribes became Tribe.  Naughty Pickwick Records.

The inconvenience of learning a foreign language is a major reason people choose not to pursue cross-cultural missions. But, as Dr. Vern Poythress explains, language isn't just a barrier; it's a gift from God that displays his creativity. In this special interview, Dr. Poythress explains why language itself finds its source in the Trinity, how missionaries should approach language learning. Later, we address how missionaries can use presuppositional apologetics in dealing with pagan religious cultures. Rev. Dr. Vern Poythress (Ph.D., Harvard; D.Th., Stellenbosch) is professor of New Testament and biblical interpretation at Westminster Theological Seminary, where he has taught for 43 years. Dr. Poythress' academic interests include how Christianity and the Trinitarian nature of God impact all areas of life. He has also spent much of his career studying and teaching biblical interpretation and hermeneutics. A few of his notable books include Redeeming Science, Redeeming Philosophy, or Chance and the Sovereignty of God, and In the Beginning Was the Word, which looks at the Trinitarian foundations for language. The Colombian novelist Tomas Gonzalez has been writing for three decades, but has only been read this year by an English-speaking audience after his debut, In the Beginning Was the Sea, was published by the wonderful Pushkin Press. ----more----Terse but lyrical, the novel was inspired by the murder of his brother Juan, who had swapped fast-living in Bogota for a dream of rural self-sufficiency on the Colombian coast. Juan, or J in the novel, was killed by a man he hired to manage the farm he shared with his girlfriend, Elena. The novel was Gonzalez's attempt to understand what happened and ponder its meaning against a larger universe at once beautiful, terrifying and indifferent to the human drama. We met in the slightly downbeat bar of Gonzalez's Kings Cross hotel. It was a peculiar venue to  discuss matters at once melancholy and inspirational. We were interrupted, variously, by a loud fan, a woman filling a metal dog bowl full of food, the ensuing dog skittering on its claws towards its lunch, several workmen and a chatty receptionist.
