In this episode, I sit down with Damian from our team, who became the Norwegian Cup Tasters Champion in March this year. Damian works both as a barista in our espresso bar and as a roaster in our roastery, and he has been part of the team since 2023. We talk about his journey into coffee, how he ended up working with us, and what it is like to work in Norway compared to his previous jobs. We also discuss how he brews coffee at home, what motivates him to keep learning, and how he approaches tasting and quality control in his daily work. As part of his prize for winning the national championship, Damian travelled to Honduras to take part as a judge in the Cup of Excellence – a competition for high-quality coffees. He shares his impressions from visiting coffee farms for the first time, what he learned from producers like Jobneel, and how seeing the production side of coffee has shaped his perspective. This week, Damian will represent Norway in the World Cup Tasters Championship in Geneva. We talk about his goals for the competition, how he has been preparing, and what he has learned about himself through the process. Music by my uncle, Jens Wendelboe.

You may have heard of the critical brain hypothesis. It goes something like this: brain activity operates near a dynamical regime called criticality, poised at the sweet spot between too much order and too much chaos, and this is a good thing because systems at criticality are optimized for computing, they maximize information transfer, they maximize the time range over which they operate, and a handful of other good properties. John Beggs has been studying criticality in brains for over 20 years now. His 2003 paper with Deitmar Plenz is one of of the first if not the first to show networks of neurons operating near criticality, and it gets cited in almost every criticality paper I read. John runs the Beggs Lab at Indiana University Bloomington, and a few years ago he literally wrote the book on criticality, called The Cortex and the Critical Point: Understanding the Power of Emergence, which I highly recommend as an excellent introduction to the topic, and he continues to work on criticality these days. On this episode we discuss what criticality is, why and how brains might strive for it, the past and present of how to measure it and why there isn't a consensus on how to measure it, what it means that criticality appears in so many natural systems outside of brains yet we want to say it's a special property of brains. These days John spends plenty of effort defending the criticality hypothesis from critics, so we discuss that, and much more. Beggs Lab. On this episode of Obsessed or Not Interested Podcast I got to chat and have a conversation with my bestie, Tara Bialek. We had a great conversation about our own fitness journeys and how they have evolved over the years. We both agreed that setting individual goals is key and that pushing ourselves too hard can lead to injuries. Tara shared her experience with high-impact workouts and how she has found a balance by incorporating walking and lifting medium weights into her routine. We also talked about the importance of keeping things simple when it comes to nutrition and fitness. Sometimes, we can get caught up in complicated diets and workout plans, but finding what works for us personally is what really matters. We also delved into the role of mindset and stress reduction in achieving our fitness goals. It's not just about the physical aspect, but also about having a positive mindset and managing stress effectively. We discussed how stress can hinder our progress and the importance of finding ways to reduce it, such as through meditation or other relaxation techniques. This was a fantastic conversation filled with valuable insights and tips for anyone looking to maintain their fitness over 40. Something different for you today. Dan Bialek is here. Dan is currently a pretty accomplished copywriter, and social media strategist, and operator of the Amazing Comedy Theater in Orange County. But for our purposes today, he used t run 12 Shiny Nickels in Los Angeles. And he used to be the #1 comedian on MySpace Comedy. Until recently, 12 Shiny Nickels was the best show experience I've had in Los Angeles. It's where I met most of the LA comics I know. It's where I taped my first TV set for Last Call with Carson Daly. And I thought if I were to do an LA version of my book, I'd definitely do a chapter on Dan or that show. Plus, the story of how he became the #1 comic on MySpace is pretty epic.

A surfer/journalist/uber human with balls of pure titanium (and possibly even adamantium) infused steel. Some folks' online comments were (unwarrantedly) brutal and Dashel took them all in stride. He even saves some of the best/worst comments and hatemail he gets in a special folder on his computer desktop. Dashel was a lot of fun to have on the show and interview. Episode 4 On this episode of The Surfing Podcast we discuss the worst excuses given after burning another surfer, why Wavestorm kooks need to go away, lackluster summer surf and the continued Southern California great white shark infestation. FREE STUFF: Win A Free Pair Of SurfEars Earplugs Right Now The Surfing Podcast - Worst Excuses For Dropping In, Wavestorm Kooks, Summer Crowds & More OC Sharks Here are some of the hilarious responses to the question "What's The Worst Excuse You've Ever Heard From Someone Who Dropped In On You" on Facebook and Instagram. And here's an article featuring the best of each. In this episode we also discuss the scourge of the Wavestorm soft-top surfboard and how its proliferation has affected lineups across the world. Our host also complains about the popularity of the Hayden Shapes Hypto Krypto and how this surfboard basically turns mediocre surfers into mediocre surfers who catch twice as many waves while doing half as many exciting or functional maneuvers on those waves. And we talk about "back-paddling," the mystic art of sitting closer to the beach than a surfer taking off at the peak of a wave and trying to take off behind him after he's already up and riding. Also commonly known by surfers and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as "being a f***ing weasel" or "weaseling." It wasn't mentioned during the show but surfers guilty of back-paddling should face the same harsh prison sentences and public ridicule as child molesters and people who abuse animals. Like it should be full-on added the U.S. Constitution. Effective immediately. Seriously.
