You may have heard of the critical brain hypothesis. It goes something like this: brain activity operates near a dynamical regime called criticality, poised at the sweet spot between too much order and too much chaos, and this is a good thing because systems at criticality are optimized for computing, they maximize information transfer, they maximize the time range over which they operate, and a handful of other good properties. John Beggs has been studying criticality in brains for over 20 years now. His 2003 paper with Deitmar Plenz is one of of the first if not the first to show networks of neurons operating near criticality, and it gets cited in almost every criticality paper I read. John runs the Beggs Lab at Indiana University Bloomington, and a few years ago he literally wrote the book on criticality, called The Cortex and the Critical Point: Understanding the Power of Emergence, which I highly recommend as an excellent introduction to the topic, and he continues to work on criticality these days. On this episode we discuss what criticality is, why and how brains might strive for it, the past and present of how to measure it and why there isn't a consensus on how to measure it, what it means that criticality appears in so many natural systems outside of brains yet we want to say it's a special property of brains. These days John spends plenty of effort defending the criticality hypothesis from critics, so we discuss that, and much more. Beggs Lab. Content warning: assault, sexual assault, rape, serial rape, and nonconsensual pornography. As shared in part one of her story, Hannah Vanderhorst is a special education teacher and administrator living in Denver, Colorado. Having moved to the city in 2016, just before going through a breakup, Hannah turned to dating apps to expand her social circle and look for potential love. However, an October 2019 date changed her trajectory forever. It was on this date that she became a victim of a serial sexual predator, although she wouldn't find that out until over three years after her assault. Hannah would then join a taxing legal battle to receive justice, witness legal change elicited by her and others' experiences, and work to heal from the trauma. The Broken Cycle Media team is grateful that Hannah was willing to so selflessly share her story to bring awareness to our listeners. Sources: Allyn, B. (2024, February 15). In this episode of the Anglotopia podcast, host Jonathan Thomas interviews military historian John Maass about his book "From Trenton to Yorktown: The Five Decisive Turning Points of the American Revolution." Maass, who works at the National Army Museum, discusses why he selected these specific turning points and how they altered the trajectory of the war. The conversation explores Washington's desperate gamble at Trenton when his army was at its lowest point, the truth behind the Valley Forge mythology, the critical importance of the Saratoga victory in securing French support, and how British strategic errors and logistical failures contributed to their ultimate defeat. Maass provides fresh insights into how these key moments secured American independence while highlighting the shared British-American history before the revolution. Washington's victories at Trenton and Princeton, though involving relatively small forces, were crucial when the Continental Army was at its lowest point and restored morale. Valley Forge wasn't just about Baron von Steuben's training—it was where Washington solidified his political position, improved relations with Congress, and created a more disciplined army. The Saratoga campaign's British failure resulted from divided command structures and severe logistical challenges in North American terrain. The French alliance after Saratoga was essential for American victory, particularly the French Navy's contribution which culminated in the Battle of the Capes before Yorktown. British strategic mistakes included dividing their forces, underestimating American resolve, and prioritizing the West Indies over the American colonies after French involvement. "When Washington decided a few days before Christmas that he was going to cross the Delaware River with his army… he was arguably at the lowest point in the war, professionally himself, but also militarily." "Washington knew that his army was the embodiment of the cause of independence. It wasn't Congress. It wasn't some mythical 'the people.' It wasn't the spirit of '76, but the revolution really was alive, not well, in his army." "Up until Valley Forge, he was definitely the general. And I think after that, he was also the commander in chief." "I don't think the outcome would have been favorable if there was no French intervention at all, period, end of story." "Really the most important moment in the entire Yorktown campaign… was the British and French naval battle off the coast of the mouth of the Chesapeake called the Battle of the Capes… the most important naval battle in early American history. Nicky and Misty provide feedback on Corey's resume and portfolio, highlighting the need for clarity and measurable achievements. The episode offers valuable insights into job seeking, negotiation, and presenting oneself effectively in the tech industry.Top Takeaways:The Importance of Staying True to Yourself in Job Searches: The panel emphasizes that not every job or company is a good fit for everyone. It's more important to be authentic and align with roles that reflect your values and personality rather than trying to conform to something you're not. However, desperation during challenging times can complicate this, making it harder to prioritize alignment over necessity.Every Job is a Learning Experience: Even if you accept a role that isn't ideal, you can use it as a stepping stone. Challenging or mismatched experiences still offer valuable lessons about what to look for (or avoid) in the future, help grow your skillset, and shape your career trajectory.Shifting Hiring Trends and Perceptions: The job market's expectations are constantly changing. For example, job-hopping is more accepted in tech compared to other industries, and long tenures at one company are sometimes viewed as stagnation. Different generations and industries value different qualities, making it crucial to stay adaptable and aware of trends in your field.Mentioned In The Show:Liquid WebOmnisendCorey Maass' Portfolio

What if chaos in cultural projects is something to embrace, not fear? Can chaos theory give us new insights about how to manage complex work? Are we advocates for the owner of a project, or for the project itself? What are the three things upon which the success or failure of a project depends? Sometimes, is it better to let a few things change, rather than fight those changes for even longer? Museum staff are rarely experts in managing building projects or large exhibition productions. Why would we expect them to be? And how can we help? Jon Maass (Director, MAASS) joins host Jonathan Alger (Managing Partner, C&G Partners) to discuss "Embracing Chaos".Along the way: high-performance buildings, that word “program” again, and whether projects need overseers, therapists or cheerleaders.Talking Points: 1. Chaos theory studies things that are impossible to predict.2. Museum projects are chaotic and that's a good thing.3. A project is a cultural exercise, with its own diverse culture.4. Museum owners are not built to build buildings.5. Teams who excel at museum projects are rare.6. Change during the process is inevitable, so embrace it.How to Listen: Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/making-the-museum/id1674901311 Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/6oP4QJR7yxv7Rs7VqIpI1G Everywherehttps://makingthemuseum.transistor.fm/ Guest Bios:Jon Maass is an architect, builder and maker of things. On April 9, 2003, a US marine battalion rolled triumphantly into Firdos Square, in the center of Baghdad, two and a half weeks after the US invasion of Iraq began. Hours later, the marines toppled a statue of Saddam Hussein, amongst what seemed like a roaring, jubilant crowd of Iraqis. It became, perhaps, the most televised image of the Iraq War — and it seared itself into the minds of its viewers. Twenty years later, that image is still circulated, and sometimes celebrated. Peter Maass, then a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, stood at the edge of Firdos Square that day. What he witnessed, was vastly different from what viewers were seeing on their television screens across the world. Years later, Maass reconstructed the chain of events that led to the toppling to see what went wrong. For this week's podcast extra, he speaks with Brooke about how the media subconsciously creates events for itself to cover — and how the rampant misconceptions that followed in the wake of the toppling led to a pernicious view of the Iraq War that we're still trying to divorce from today.

This week's podcast features Robin Maass (The Walled Garden, Spark Press, May 2022). We discuss MFA programs and how they often neglect to teach story structure, and how, as a result, she had to move from “discovering the book” or pantsing to realizing you need stepping stones along the way. We explore how every book has some kind of mystery at its core and how important it is to spend time figuring out what kind of story you want to tell. Finally, we delve into social media and the appeal of Instagram as a platform. Robin Farrar Maass is a lifelong writer and reader who grew up in western Washington and fell in love with England on her first trip when she was twenty-two. She enjoys tending her messy wants-to-be-an English garden, painting watercolors, and traveling. The Walled Garden is her first novel, and she's already at work on her next novel set in England. She has an MFA from the Rainier Writing Workshop at Pacific Lutheran University and lives in Redmond, Washington with her husband and two highly opinionated Siamese cats. The U.S. government is doubling down and expanding its surveillance technology in border communities. But many residents don't know the extent to which they're being watched, given that the government rarely seeks their input. This month, the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation released new data and an interactive map of surveillance towers, which are part of the “virtual wall.” Melissa speaks with Dave Maass, EFF's director of investigations, about his organization's mapping and data project, which tracks the proliferation of surveillance tech at the southern border. Contrary to public perception, the majority of these surveillance towers aren't in the middle of nowhere, says Maass. “We hope to provide the evidence that really undermines that myth,” he says of the new project. “Many of [these towers] are in urban areas, residential communities and in the middle of public parks.” Learn more at The Border Chronicle --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/border-chronicle/support

On the podcast today we have Corey Maass. Corey is a full-stack web developer who works with agencies and businesses, large and small. He specialises in advanced WordPress functionality and building products for, and using, WordPress. Over the last decade or so, SaaS apps have become more and more popular. Not only are we using our computers more, but with the rise of smartphones, we're connected to our services all the time. There does not appear to be any corner of life where online platforms don't have some presence. From email to taxis, fitness to food planning and delivery. You can find it all in a SaaS app somewhere. Corey is on the podcast today to talk about why he thinks that building a MVP, or minimum viable product, app on top of WordPress is a good way to start your product journey. We talk about how WordPress comes bundled with many of the features that apps require, user login, roles, permissions and the REST API. This means that you don't have to reinvent the wheel for the things that WordPress already does. If you've toyed with the idea of creating a SaaS app in the past, but never quite got there, this episode is for you.
