Meet Sylva - a translator, journalist and author who has a gift for finding the silver-lining in every situation despite facing some major life blows.   You'll hear about a recent devastating loss which has seen her having to rehome her business and start again in a new place, building new clients and contacts.  While this might have served a crushing defeat to some business owners, Sylva's skills as a freedom-seeking freelancer has enabled her to weather the storms and even provide fuel for the storytelling on her podcast, Live From Suckville. In a plot twist the show deviates from its original theme, as Ella follows her curiosity about what happened next after a major flood washed away Sylva's home and village. The intention was to talk about her work as a translator in Italy, for our series on specialist writing, but the story leads down an intriguing new path, as all the best ones do.     In this episode you'll learn:  How to make an opportunity out of a crisis The three things that were salvaged during the flood What it's like to be a digital nomad Methods for pitching so that the work never dries up Finding humour and gratitude every day Steps on the journey to becoming a published author   Buckle up for a beautiful show.    About Sylva Sylva Florence has a journalism degree from James Madison University that she has put to good use over a decade of freelance editing and contributing. After moving to Italy in 2018, she also became an English as a Second Language teacher, interpreter, and translator (Italian–English). In her free time, Sylva can often be found travelling, cycling or combining the two. After returning from a solo, 4,000-mile bike trip across America, she was interviewed by many podcasts, including The Loud Women's Club, The Pedalshift Project, and The Murphology Podcast. She is also trying to publish a memoir about her experience crossing the US by bike. In January of 2022, Sylva created and now hosts her own podcast, "Live From Suckville." I can't recommend it, except maybe the other way.   7 - Amtrak is such a good way to make this trip work, and there's rumors we might get MARC out to Cumberland too   Hey, want to read a transcript of the episode? You know you've got a bike tour coming up this year, so you want to make sure you're ready for it. What are some things to do to make that easier in the bike touring offseason? On this episode, some insight into my plans this offseason plus tips from ACA, REI and other experts! Offseason Training for Bike Touring   Covered this a bit in Pedalshift 158   Quick review of training philosophies Train like hell vs. Ride your way to touring shape vs. Somewhere in the middle This winter I'm going to try to do a few things in prep for my winter tour (preview coming next episode!)   Goal 1 - lose 10 pounds from 1/1 to day 1 of tour (stretch goal 12) Goal 2 - Train a minimum of 30 minutes per day 3 days/week (indoor or outdoor) Goal 3 - Plan and begin upper body and/or circuit training   My shifting philosophy on training - easier to just jump on the bike when you're younger and fitter!   Other/more aggressive philosophies:   biketours.com - riding average daily distance several times per week well in advance of the tour (IMO this is total overkill)   ACA - Focus on time in the saddle first, seek hills, build endurance, ride with weight (VERY smart)   REI - sample training week with fantastic exercise routines, with focus on flexibility. Much more in the train like hell philosophy but excellent things to consider adding to a "somewhere in the middle" routine.

Thanks a Million Your podcast has provided me with the inspiration to not only get out on my bike but to bring the "ride your ride" mentality along with me. Digital creators like yourself and Russ Roca from Path Less Pedal are a welcome breath of fresh air in the world of lycra and FKTs. Greg L'Etoile-Lopes     Five stars for your creative content during the 2 years of pandemic which I think will stand alone as something really special. Being an armchair traveller by bike along your American trails has been something special and definitely helped to keep me afloat during these unique times, so a huge thank you. Jacqui M.     I first heard of the show by word of mouth from someone at the Half Moon State Beach, here in California, a few years ago.  The podcast gives me something to look forward to every Thursday: I especially like play-by-play or the tour journals. Here's to another 1M downloads! Cyrus Farrivar   I'm not sure when I first discovered your podcast but I have listened religiously since then. I even went back and listened to the previous shows until I was relegated to only once a week content.  I have toured over 30,000 miles so far and I am currently on a break in Cambodia until spring of next year. I spend a lot of time cycling through the temples and the countryside to keep in cycling shape.I look forward to listening more over the next tens of thousand of miles I get to ride in the future. Scott Sharick I am a long time listener from Australia. Your podcast has provided me with hours of entertainment over the years and I congratulate you on reaching 1 million downloads. Your podcast has opened my eyes to touring possibilities in the US, in particular the Pacific Coast and C and O.   Martin Gibson Congratulations on the 1 million milestone! During a 2018 tour I went back and listened to the podcast from start to the (then) end. I also found the sprocket episode where you sang the sound bite that infamously became their calendar sounder, I will be kind and never reveal it. Byron Paterson I do not know how I discovered Pedalshift, but I am very glad that I did.  It makes me look forward to Thursdays.  I just enjoy traveling with you... and also planning with you and dealing with the various issues that we have to deal with - both on the road and back at home. Terry Fitzgerald     I also got a kick out of seeing your sticker on the 44 marker in Rockwood, PA during my ride. Needs (really, wants) meet opportunity for a new project that scratches an itch and might have bike touring utility: welcome to the Pedalshift microcamper build! On this episode, I cover the background on the project, how it relates to bike touring, and more. The Pedalshift Microcamper Project What prompted this? Vaxxed Made a list of things I want to do Several items got ticked off if I could: visit family and friends on the west coast do it with Kimberly and the dogs (the latter can't fly easily and we've determined we can't travel together, but without them) avoid taking all of that as vacation time (I want to save that for another thing on the list... a longer tour this year) Leveraging remote work one more grand time All of this need met the opportunity: my folks bought a new car and offered this one to me for an unrelated reason that is, for the moment, postponed. The car is... a source of humor. It's not a great fit for me. Or anyone. It has an enormous blind spot that is part of its odd design. It should not normally be parallel parked. But it has, on second look, a LOT of positives. Like enormous trunk space. Lightbulb.... this can be made into a microcamper Ok, ok so back up here... how is this being used again? The near term: we're going on a big work/play adventure to the west coast. Work remotely by day, visit family and friends by nights and weekends The vehicle maxes its value in allowing us to get places by driving in shifts and as a glamping option for mid-trip We will not be staying in it more than a handful of days (we got great Airbnbs - remember we are remote working!) but it will facilitate the entire venture Allows us to travel as a unit and enjoy everything along the way So, um bike touring angle? Bike is coming with and there will absolutely be touring-adjacent adventures This is (as I mentioned earlier) a beta test for whether something like this can be useful for remote touring/bikepacking loops. What's the plan? I'm not going to share the specifics of our travel on the pod, but I will note a few things Pod will continue during the trip, so some of the adventures will end up on it One major destination is Burlington Campground on the Avenue of the Giants. No remote work will be happening there! This will be a full month plus. How the hell is this going to work? I'll be sharing more details on this aspect in the next episode, but here's the plan This is not a high-end buildout. It's more function over form... remember this is a beta test. That said, there are some needs we have: comfort is top of the list, but we also need power, privacy and storage. I've already removed the rear seats and much of the trim I'll sound dampen the bare metal I'll run some 12V and USB lines for charging devices, fans and lighting The biggest hurdle is building a level platform that is sturdy and the lowest possible profile over the transition between the rear cabin and the trunk. The more vertical room there, the better likelihood two side-sleepers can call this a win. Some back of the napkin measurements show I can repurpose a perfectly fine, but on-my-list-to replace memory foam mattress. It will need to be cut to a very odd shape, but if it works it will be plenty of space. Beneath the platform and mattress is a fair amount of storage. We'll also have two roller suitcases that will be in the trunk section while driving and in the front seats when sleeping. I'm also going to make blackout shades for all windows, giving us privacy and stealth. I also got a magnetic bug screen for the moonroof that will be perfect for facilitating airflow on the less-than-cool nights. We'll also have USB fans to circulate air. I have ideas and you are doing this wrong! Cool. So, if there's one thing I've learned in watching van builds it's that everyone has an opinion and there's always a way to improve on things. This is a beta and I expect to learn a TON. What's up with next episode? I'm going to document the build Tour Journals style. I might not finish by then... so if this is interesting to you, I can extend to a third episode in May. If you want to go back to more directly related to bike touring topics... happy to do that. Email me your thoughts on that! And oh hey... Live show! 4/30 fri 9pm ET! Topics and more TBA but I'm sure a segment will be on the microcamper as touring enhancer. Click here for the details. Programming note, this live show will be rebroadcast as the pod on May 6th, which will knock the best of out of its usual first Thursday perch to the second Thursday in May which is May 13th. With no climbing in my bicycling since 2019, could I haul me and a fully loaded bike up that hill? It seems hard to believe I hadn't bike toured on anything except the C&O in six months. SIX months! I love me some C&O, but if you're like me variety helps keep me sane. So in August 2020, still in the midst of a global pandemic that was sticking around the US longer than any of us wanted, I figured out a safe and responsible way to roll on a different trail.... the Great Allegheny Passage. And due to some lucky happenstance, I could do a loop where each day was a convenient and Syracuse University numerology-friendly 44 milles (#GoOrange).   Photos Check out Pedalshift on Instagram! As I round the corner to my next tour of the Great Allegheny Passage, what are my biggest challenges? You know, other than the pandemic thing. The GAP 4x44 Loop tour preview has all the answers...   Housekeeping   Morning rides on the C&O and WMRT - not seeing a lot of signs of touring in Hancock and I mention this as a followup from last week's show... I'd expect to see someone in the Hancock area but I'm only surveying one C&O campground on the west side of town and the C&O Bike Shop bunk house. If you're on the C&O this summer, I'd be curious to get your take on the touring "traffic"   Thanks for the feedback on touring during COVID... seems to be some consensus on cancelling bigger tours and keeping things local. That's where I'm largely at, although this tour will bring me well outside of my home stomping grounds, but the start and finish is arguably the edge of my home touring neighborhood. Speaking of...   The GAP 4x44 Loop Considered going lighter and hammock only, but decided to roll full loaded in case tent is a more comfortable solution (which it may be) Considering a new camping hammock, but bringing my cheap one Biggest challenge - water. Unlike the C&O, the GAP has very little water on-trail, and I'm going to assume those sources may be shut due to COVID. Plan on bringing my water tank (4L) plus several .5L bottles to be safe Heat index has been very high lately, so I'm assuming it may be the same.  Food. Toying with no stove for this trip and cold soaking or eating whole foods (good!) or stuff from cans (bad, but tasty!) Cold bag - I might attempt some chilled delicacies and use a modified cold bag with frozen water bottle and cold brew for day 1 and buy ice at resupply after day 2 if I'm wanting to keep things cold for day 3 and the final night of camping. It's easy to say yes to this for the first day and night since I would consume the melt on day 2. Tested it on the Brompton overnighter, so it works ok. Limiting the clothing. Look, I talk a big game, but I tend to wear the same stuff. My partner may not be excited by this when she picks me up on day 4. I will bring at least 3 masks, 2 of which will be gaiter style. I've got one I really like that has elastic on both ends and that makes it ideal for holding above the nose. I have a new ear hook one I may use as my camp-only one. New ride: the bike rides like a champ now that it's been reconstructed. New fork is black, so the bike has a decidedly Frankenstein vibe, but that's ok by me. I'm glad I've done the whole trail before but I think I'll miss completing the last 62 miles to PGH. Given that I've done the whole C&O in pieces this season, I might look to do that western third of the GAP in the fall, depending on how things go. Next week's show is the August Best Of, featuring Episode 087 on hot weather touring. You know, in case we get any hot weather ¯_(ツ)_/¯  The GAP 4x44 Loop Tour Journal will start August 13th and get us into Labor Day and the September best of, TBD Thanks so much for listening and supporting the show!

As we adjust to the new normal, can we bike tour safely and responsibly during a pandemic? On this episode, I share the thoughts of fellow listeners, a bike touring organization and my personal recommendations for bike touring during COVID times. News and housekeeping Stay tuned for my next tour at the end of the show! Kind of a spoiler alert since the topic is touring during COVID that I'm on the side of "yes you can, but..."    Bike shortages and maintenance backups - a quick heads up for those of you looking to ride that bike shops are having a tough time keeping many types of bikes in stock and many of them are backed up on maintenance and repairs, some for weeks. So plan ahead!   I'm really late to the game on the Adventure Cycling Dynamo Jenny podcast... if you've listened for any length of time to this show, I'm a big booster of women in bike touring go check it out! And if you never heard my chats with Jasmine Reese, Annalisa van den Bergh, Adele Dittus, Cat Caperello-Snyder, Kerry Gross, and I know I'm missing a ton of others, they're all in the back episodes of the Pedalshift Project so please check those out too!   Bike Touring in COVID Times   Let's start with some baseline elements here:   I'm taking this with a US perspective where we are, frankly, a dumpster fire compared to other parts of the world in terms of infections. Your region and/or country may vary.   The novel coronavirus is a real threat. It is contagious, we're unsure if getting it confers immunity, but we do know some people can catch it and die. So even if you personally don't worry about it, you can pass it along to people who are more vulnerable than you. This is not the flu, it's way worse.   But, life is a series of managed risks. After all, bike touring is a managed risk! If COVID were a purely personal risk one would take it would be a lot different, however, the fact it's contagious, can be passed on asymptomatically or presymptomatically means - in my opinion - we have a responsibility to others as well to manage the risk of spread.   I have a responsibility to my family. I have a responsibility to the people I come in contact with - folks at grocery stores and shops and cafes. On a bike tour, you're bringing the potential of infection with you and may not know it.   Again, in my opinion, that means bicycle touring should be done with more caution and with less contact than before the outbreaks began.   What are others saying?   At this time, Adventure Cycling Association discourages cyclists from embarking on long-distance bike travel along the Adventure Cycling Route Network.   We believe the bicycle travel community has a responsibility to avoid endangering the health of small communities and straining limited medical resources. Moreover, shelter-in-place and quarantine orders exist at many levels of government across our network, and availability of services is inconsistent and unpredictable.     We can’t say for certain when it will be safe to take long tours again, but at this time we’ve canceled our own guided tours through September 5, and are evaluating on an ongoing basis beyond that date.   In the meantime, Adventure Cycling is hard at work to improve bike travel conditions, develop new routes for future adventures, and make sure we’re ready to help you when it’s time to hit the road once again.   Martin in OK:   For context, I live in rural northeast Oklahoma. We have a low population density; however,  many area residents are at best inconsistent about protective behaviors. Also relevant is that I have a family member with a mild-to-moderately compromised immune system.   In late May I prepared a 200-mile, 4-6 day loop tour through rural back roads. I designed the route so that campgrounds were available every 40-60 miles and so with natural water sources I could filter from to minimize reliance on in-town resupply stops. Halfway through the route I had the option (and risk) of a hotel to cool off from the heat. I ended up cancelling my plans when Oklahoma’s COVID surge took off in June.   As I’ve considered why I canceled this tour, I realize that the presence of COVID alters my risk assessment of other tour variables - mostly by making my typical bail-out options potentially unsafe for me, my family, or my helper/rescuer. For this tour, the most likely potential problem was heat exhaustion (95 degree highs and 65% humidity). In a COVID world, I don’t want to cool off inside high-traffic buildings like gas stations, especially in a region where mask-wearing is not the majority practice. And, of course, if I get heat stroke I could end up in an emergency room where there’s liable to be a greater presence of coronavirus. In my mind, COVID amplifies the potential consequences of the risks already present on a bike tour.   What does touring look like for me going forward? Probably S24O’s and few, if any, multi-night tours. I’ve begun pinpointing primitive, open camping locations within a 40-60 mile radius: mostly wildlife conservation areas and designated fishing lakes. Typically, there are no facilities or campgrounds as such, and thus very low traffic. While I might consider a small state park, I’m not comfortable chancing a crowded check-in lobby. With luck I can string together a  2-night mini-tour of no-contact campsites. As long as the riding and weather aren’t too demanding I’d be willing to do that sort of a tour. Also, no more tours without a family member on standby ready to pick me up if need be; no relying on the kindness of strangers for enough aid to get me back on the road.   It will be interesting to see where the bike touring community lands post-COVID. I anticipate wildly different new norms between various regions of the country.     Greg Braithwaite   What I've personally settled into is several one-day trips that include: - 1 stop max. at some kind of supply/food store - Duh--Use of disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, masks - No weekend overnights to avoid crowds - Repeated trips to a destination the coast that is a proven stealth spot--but modifying my route to get there (for me this is often 80-120 miles round trip).   What DIDN'T work was when our CA State Parks opened and I ASSUMED that included hiker/biker sites--It does not! It's unclear from the website and I should have called before riding out to Half Moon Bay from Santa Cruz. This mistake caused me to stay in a hotel (very clean/very safe), BUT not something I'd necessarily sign up for during COVID.   Quick plug for Greg's new YouTube channel! It's called BIKEVIDS!      What am I recommending in the US and potentially elsewhere?   Only tour in a responsible way. The routes are going to be there after this. Shorter, local, low or preferably no-contact tours. I am avoiding all forms of public transportation for now, including busses, trains and planes. All of my tours are beginning and ending at home or within a drive or drop-off/pickup  Limited resupplies, limited contact in towns Mask up as much as possible, including when riding but especially when others are around  Solo travel is ideal. Next best option, touring within your bubble. Last best is touring with others, but remaining socially distanced. Maximum hygiene before and after contact with restrooms, facilities, shops, stores, etc.  Camping is probably safest (lower contact, unless it's not).  Airbnbs and hotels aren't necessarily unsafe - depends on circumstances Less proximity to people is most preferable If you are showing any symptoms, bail out ASAP A day trip loop that starts and ends at your home is fine replacement in these times.    Are people touring in the US?   Yes, but it's hard for me to assess whether it's less, the same or more than last year. And, oh yeah, I'm touring. It's been really helpful for my mental health and a nice getaway from the new normal   The next tour: GAP 4x44 Loop   Following my own recommendations:   Keeping it ocal-ish: Begins and ends 1 hour drive and pickup from my cabin  All camping, potentially with some stealth camping to reduce contact even more Solo Self contained with one resupply point midway (water notwithstanding) Masking, sanitizer - I'm treating my interactions so that if I were infected that it's far less likely I'd be bringing it to anyone and that I'm minimizing my exposure in case someone around me is infected.   It's a tour of the GAP - a loop from Cumberland to Connnelsville and back. What's fun is it's 4 days of averaging or hitting 44 miles (go Orange, no I didn't plan it). So it's the GAP 4x44 Loop. Coming to the pod in August!

With my proper trail bike in the shop but a real need to get out for an overnight, I turned to a C&O newbie... my trusty 12" wheeled, very orange Brompton as my chariot to an urban(ish) stealth camping overnight. Would the trail chew up the Brompton? Would my orange gear prove too, well, orange for stealth camping? If you can't get your adventure by the liter these days, may as well do it in sips... News and housekeeping My touring bike is finally back! Now that it's fully repaired (a) wow what a difference and (b) I'm hoping to pull together another mini tour to share with you all soon. And no, it won't be the C&O... but the logistics are key.   Speaking of. Next week's show is going to revisit the COVID situation. Touring as we knew it just isn't possible and how we modify what we do is the difference between responsible and irresponsible. On next week's show I'll share my thoughts on what responsible bike touring looks like this year and beyond. If you've got thoughts, I'd love to hear them to help shape the episode... call the voicemail at 202-930-1109 or shoot me an email at pedalshift@pedalshift.net. Pedalshift Tour Journals: A Brompton Urban Stealth Overnight I won't share details of where I was other than (a) it was accessed using the C&O trail, (b) to the best of my knowledge it was not on NPS property, (c) it was (barely) inside the Beltway a.k.a. I-495, the interstate that loops around my fair District plus suburban Maryland and northern Virginia, and (d) there were no "no trespassing" signs.   So, nobody saw me re-enter the trail and the ride back was uneventful. Sitting here now several days later I'm still really impressed at the Brompton and I don't think I'll underestimate its ability to handle a trail like that anymore. I'm also liking these quick overnights as mini sips of adventure... it's not a good substitute to what I want, but it's good enough. And that's going to have to do.

My five takeaways from social distance bike touring in the age of coronavirus and what I can figure out is the near term future for bike touring in 2020. Tour Journal: Social Distancing on the C&O Towpath This was a no-contact, self-supported, self-contained ride of the C&O that didn't stick to plan, had a low point or two, and if I'm being honest probably won't end up on my list of all time tours... but I have to wonder if it won't be amongst the most memorable. Check out Pedalshift 199 for the initial plan (spoiler: I did not stick to it),  Pedalshift 200 for Day 1, and Pedalshift 201 for Day 2, and Pedalshift 202 for Day 3. 5 Takeaways Expectations are hard to shake   Bike touring is more mental than physical   I like familiar tours but I’m missing new routes   I think backcountry rules are pretty easy to add on to a typical tour mindset   More and more I’m liking less and less mileage per day   What’s next for the rest of spring? I think bike touring can happen, maybe soon? Maybe not.    My personal choice: zero or very low contact touring until conditions change. At the moment, with campgrounds closed on the C&O and (I think?) the GAP, I'm on touring pause. For now.   I'm also not planning a tour just yet. I assume the first one available will be a C&O or GAP tour, but who knows?    I'm also intrigued with the possibility of getting a more backcountry bike and (finally) doing some bikepacking. Since then, the Park Service has closed the campsites. Please do not camp the C&O until that closure has been lifted. I know I will not. As I sit here toward the middle end of April, there's a lot of mixed messages I'm receiving  on what 2020 feels like for bike touring. With the current global circumstances, I'm doing a different tour than I originally planned - a solo, non-contact, self-supported, socially responsibly distanced tour of the great C&O towpath. This is probably the solo bike tour that makes the most sense, and might be the most important one I've ever needed. In this episode, the preparation! A Solo Bike Tour of the C&O Towpath Going fully self-supported on the C&O Intention is to carry everything I need for 4 full days Round trip to my cabin in WV and back - about 65 miles per day Will have a roof over my head for night 2 Why this? I had previously scheduled vacation for 3 days, but I'm going to knock it to 2 and go into the weekend I will be starting in DC and given a few factors, ending in DC is easier on family dynamics than ending in WV and having Kimberly drive out herself with all the dogs and cat We've been doing essentially long weekends at the cabin, but are looking to shift to be in WV more than DC for the near term... and this helps facilitate that What's the C&O looking like? Great question. I haven't been riding it much  but it's been an exceedingly mild winter so trail conditions are likely solid There's a low-level water crossing at MM52 that by all accounts is just fine Rain hitting the trail before I ride so I expect it to be a little wet, but nowhere near the mud bog it could have been Water is out at the campsites so I'll need to haul my own and fill at the limited taps along the way I expect the trail to be unusually busy by day users near DC, Great Falls, Brunswick and Hancock but very, very quiet otherwise. Could be wrong, but  I'm guessing I'll be the only camper out there. What gear? Tuned up the Safari and it's good to go. It needs some work after, which I'm looking forward to getting at my LBS. I'll be riding heavy for three reasons I'm bringing my big stove because of the emphasis on cooking and cleaning (huge green propane cylinder - the "green dragon" I've called it) Lots of food and water to avoid needing to go to the limited options (Point of Rocks and Brunswick are the only truly easy access points in this section of the trail after leaving the DC area Layers and wet weather gear - looks like I will definitely have rain and the temp swings from early morning to late afternoon mean wool layers and full rain gear Two panniers Probably two dry bags (why not!) Considered dragging the trailer for this one, but the low water crossing makes that a hassle. Maybe next time. No Belle Starr for this one... looks like conditions are a little too adverse for her narrow comfort range! Pack List tent sleeping bag pad pump spare tube multitool and tool bag spork Cook kit and Green Dragon stove Camp soap and cleaning towel Coffee kit (aeropress or drip? Not sure) Bandannas x3 Camp towel Wool layers Puffer vest Rain jacket and hood Rain pants LS shirt Rain gloves underwear x2 socks x2 (smart wool and waterproof) toiletry bag (incl. ibuprofin, caffeine and electrolyte pills) hats (cold hat plus ball cap) helmet batteries and cables (new wireless charging battery) Headphones (wired and Airpods) iPhone water bottles x3 water bladder adult beverages Ottolock wallet Sleep clothes Flip Flops Food Knorr sidekicks Block of cheese Pop tarts Trail mix Tortillas PB What are the rules on this one? Barring emergencies or mechanicals I can't overcome, I'm not going into towns or shops - I think one could in these social distancing times but reducing to zero is best across the board. If I run into folks on the trail I'll interact as usual, just from a distance. Especially in camp. Night 2 will be at the cabin, particularly if the ride ends up being wet. While it's no Missing Link tour of Southern CA, this is a trip I've always wanted to do... a round trip to my cabin using no fossil fuels, and just my two legs and a bike. Pedalshift 199 will include the process that brought me to this decision and reveal my plans for that time. The Interview: Maggie Lonergan on Bicycle Touring Norway Check out our first chat about bike rafting in Ep 164.   Maggie Lonergan lives in San Francisco, still holding onto her New England ways. She's spent the last decade learning to balance big adventures with explorations in daily life. She spends her work weeks exploring the bay area in the water and by bike, occasionally taking a long hike up a mountain that is too daunting to ride up.    She named her website after her yoga teaching business "Hiccuping Yogi" as a nod to her chronic hiccups. She treats it as a frequent reminder that sometimes things happen that we can’t control. Although she doesn’t teach much these days she's kept the name because her adventure background started with thousands of hours on the mat and it’s a good reminder to that everything comes back to the breath.   How's everything in San Francisco? Is the lockdown impacting your ability to do things outside? Turning to Norway! Last time we talked you had done your bike rafting adventure... what got you interested in Norway? What was your strategy for getting your gear to Norway?  What was your planned route and were you able to stick with it? My friend MJ (coincidentally lives in SF too!) cycled Norway and ran into a ton of soul-sucking rain. What was your experience? Do you have favorite rain gear you recommend? Way up north in the summer means nearly 24 hours of daylight - how did that impact your trip?  2020 trips to Norway may be up in the air, but at some point we'll be able to move around a little better globally... what would be your #1 tip to someone looking to tackle a similar ride?

Fellow Star Wars nerds! I have the Disney audio but need some time to distill it. Look for that in March. The Kessel Run: A Central Florida Bike Tour Takeaways Reminder to check out part 1 in PSP 194 and part 2 in PSP 195. 1 - Central Florida doesn't expect a bike tour, but I've found it to be better cycling than its reputation 2- Urban riding is great training for bicycle touring amongst motorized vehicles 3 - Disneyworld and Airports: not super bike friendly unless they are 4 - Ride With GPS is a fantastic tool for riding in "new to me" places, but spending some time with Google Streetview can demystify spots that look gnarly on a map 5 - I don't think I'll ever stick to one style of touring and Florida proves me why 6 - Four seasons FTW 7 - Ultralight does not mean ultrastupid - I got lucky with the way the rain went considering I forgot my rain pants. Double check and use a pack list, don't just assume everything is in your bags like I did! 8 - Off-road opportunity in Florida appears to be abundant 9 - Bromptons are great, and require less maintenance but I got very lucky on the seat post (broken clamp before, itty bitty screw after) 10 - Yes, you can absolutely ride with a lightsaber on your rear rack. Unveiling The Missing Link bike tour I'll be flying to southern California with my Brompton to ride the one piece of the California coast I missed in my 2014 tour and connect two dots between Anaheim and Oceanside that I bypassed by train. It's a short link in an otherwise uninterrupted chain. It's the missing link. 2014 ride was dominated by camping but towards the end there is a long stretch of southern CA with limited camping. Combine a dwindling budget with a reticence to deal with a question mark of Camp Pendleton access, I decided to bike inland for a cheaper hotel stay, add some miles through Los Angeles, and take the train past Camp Pendleton to get to  the next campground. Camp Pendleton access has been an issue since 9/11 and in 2014 the system was practically a day-to-day assessment I didn't want to deal with. Now, the system in place is arguably worse, but the way around the base is clearer - Interstate 5 is legally available for the 6 or so miles. Permits are available at the south gate, but I've decided to just go with the flow and ride 30 minutes rather than get a ride down to get the permit and go back north again. Arguably a minor challenge—the cycling should be easy, but the zooming cars are a concern— but with wide shoulders I feel comfortable with the choice. On my train ride down in 2014 the views from the Surfliner made me regret the decision to be on a train. Now I get a chance to ride the coast along  a truly iconic stretch of beaches in Orange County and south. Will be riding the Brompton and forgoing camping again (there aren't great options in this stretch). Will tackle this in two days of about 50ish miles each. First stretch includes a lot of trail time along the Santa Ana River to the coast to rejoin the Pacific Coast route. Then I'll be sticking on that for the ride south. I plan to wrap up in San Diego but the link completes well north of there in Oceanside, which gives me an out via a fast forward if the need arises. Whether I wrap up in SD or Oceanside, I have a train to take me back up to Burbank to fly back, because LAX is apparently a disaster these days

The month of MJ continues with the very first Pedalshift Bicycle Tour Draft! I explain the rules at the top, and we kind of make it up as we go along, but the essence is each of us chooses pieces of gear or other elements of a bike tour that the other person now cannot choose, and then you get to choose who wins. The Pedalshift 2020 Bicycle Touring Draft Rules in a nutshell... each person picks once per round. We pick an element of bike touring gear. The other person is no longer able to pick it! After 9 rounds we argue who has the better draft and YOU get to judge the winner!   The Draft results Cast your vote Vote here or at pedalshift.net/191 You have the rest of January eastern time to vote... who has the better tour setup? Coming up in January on the Pedalshift Project But it doesn't end there... it is the month of Mysterious James and we have one more episode coming at you featuring MJ. We continue  our competitive streak and choose a poker full house hand of 5 touring routes - 3 ACAs and 2 wild cards, and you get to decide who drew the better hand. That's next week on ep 192.   My next bike tour, the Kessel Run in central FL, gets a preview episode the week after! Super stoked about riding in Florida again so stay tuned!

Happy New Year! January 2020 is very special because we bring you something long denied to you. More Mysterious James. We realized we've been doing this bike touring thing for an entire decade, so we talk about our thoughts on a decade of touring, lessons learned and thoughts on the future. The Interview: A Decade of Bike Touring with MJ If you’re here, you wanted to know what or who Mysterious James aka MJ is. Here’s the deal:   – MJ is an enigma wrapped in a riddle dropped in a box of Cracker Jack   – MJ is a massive user of Twitter and other social media   – MJ does not have an account on any of these   – MJ is a ghost, but not dead.   – MJ has been transformed by bike touring, and now says hello to people, but only if he deems them odd enough to talk to.   – MJ is lanky and about the size of a small giraffe.   – MJ rides a Surly Long Haul Trucker, the Cadillac of touring bikes. It’s also a little culty.   – MJ and I used to have similar jobs, but not really   – MJ shall always be mysterious   The supplements I mentioned: I literally cannot find them! Sorry folks! Amino something or other?   The MJ jolt  it doesn't end here... it is the month of Mysterious James and we have two more episodes coming at you featuring MJ. We get competitive and do something never done on the Pedalshift Project... next week we begin a new tradition - the Pedalshift Bike Touring Draft where James and I draft components for a fictional tour and you get to vote on who did it better. And the week after that we choose a poker full house hand of 5 touring routes - 3 ACAs and 2 wild cards, and you get to decide who drew the better hand.   January is super fun, but it all leads into the next bike tour, the Kessel Run in central FL, which we're previewing at the end of the month, and will be documented into February. Almost everywhere, the cheapest bet to stay fed on bicycle tour is a town's grocery store. On this episode, I cover my grocery store strategies on bike tour... from prep to pedaling off with panniers full of treats to chow on later! Hey, I'm presenting at the National Bike Summit's Active Transportation Leadership Retreat in March. National Bike Summit is the biggest collection of bike advocates and it happens in DC. This will be the first time I'm lawyering it up in the bike advocacy space, so it's going to be fun. Look for a DC meetup for attendees and generally Pedalshift-inclined types in mid-March.   Grocery Store Strategies on Bike Tour PREP Map them out ahead of time or at least scope them out the day of Have room in your bags or a strategy to get your food protected Know what meals you're buying for (i.e. tonight's dinner and tomorrow's breakfast and snack) if not a list ARRIVING Scope out bicycle parking options Did you bring a lock? Should I be afraid people are going to rifle through my stuff? IN STORE Check to see if they have wifi. Download/upload stuff while you shop Hit the bathroom - might be a nicer one than you've seen in a minute. Clean up as necessary. Start at one end of the store and sweep through to the other rather than aimlessly walking aisles Favor fresh food and veggies for the very next meal - it'll keep Favor foods that can stand up to a little jostling over more fragile options (i.e. apples over berries) If the store has one, check out the hot bar or prepared foods deli for eating at the store Weird trick: least expensive and smallest bag of frozen veggies can keep beers cold After checkout, grab a seat if they have one. Look to charge up and eat while you continue to up/download PACKING UP  Go directly to recycling (rare) or garbage bins outside the store Radically reduce bulk by removing dry items from boxes and discarding all unnecessary packaging. Sturdiest stuff on the bottom, most fragile/brusable on top Cold sinks, so put those frozen veggies on top of the beer

Once again, and for the final time in 2019, we are live baby live for a Pedalshift Project! In this session, we revisit bicycle touring New York state, unveil my very first tour of 2020, and answer your questions AMA style! Originally streamed live December 7, 2019. Bicycle touring WNY   Erie Canal Rode most of it in 2015 Check out Tour Journals Vol 3 and episodes 024 and 026 Want to see NYS? Do this. Don’t expect canal the whole way. Lots of road sections. Lots of small towns with charm. Fascinating infrastructure. Great history. Biking quality – pretty top notch. Trails are in excellent condition. The worst parts are still pretty great. Access to water/food – easy, but there are long stretches where there are no water sources directly on the trail. Didn’t carry food – picked up a spare meal as needed. Camping – more expensive generally than other options (C+O and west coast) and wild camping availability was a bit overstated in my opinion. Free camping on the lock properties was excellent. Good encounters – not a ton of bike tourists (although there were 600 two days behind me!). The ones I met were great. Prime time – Summer was a good time, but upstate NY can be muggy. The ideal time may be in September for warm days and cooler nights or October for foliage. check out this amazing Erie Canal cycling resource from FOTS and Pedalshift Society member Paul Mulvey. My First 2020 Tour Tour Journals Volume 17 is.... The Kessel Run. What? Last year's FL tour (Pedalshift 153, 154, 155, & 156) with a decidedly Star Wars twist Fly down and enjoy a day nerding out at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge flying the Falcon and enjoying a day THEN a tour on the Brompton from the Orlando area to the Tampa airport over two days Why? I wanted to center a bike tour around something cool so that the fun was front loaded and then the tour is the cherry on top Wanted to check a different route out of the Orlando area Doing all hotel and Airbnb stays (less gear) Shorter than I'd like but I'm hoping to get a longer tour in this spring What the heck's a Kessel Run? What you've never heard of the Millennium Falcon? It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. Go see Solo to see what the Kessel run is. Challenges: new route, west to east (against the wind), little clown bike with limited shoulders No, I won't be biking on Disney property, ARE YOU INSANE? It's literally the least safe biking in the country. Never seen a bike on the roads there and don't want to be the vanguard. AMA Have you come across a good/recommended water filter system for making river/lake water potable? Something suitable for hiking would be great. - Quyen Sawyer Mini   If you were to get a new bike, what would you get? Would it be in addition to or replacing either one you have? Something more trail-oriented that can take wide tires like a Surly ECR?   What do you think about e-bikes? Love the idea, think the execution is close but not quite there for touring unless your miles are lower and you're hoteling each night to charge up. Love that increases accessibility!   Cross country trip in the cards? Sort of. I turn a round number in 2021 and I think I'd like to have completed a bike trip across the US the wide way (I already did it north-south on the west coast in 2014) at least in segments by then. Next year I intend to connect up Cincinnati to St Louis so I'd have DC to KC completed. No specific plans yet. Episode 200 plans? Not specifically... I know ETA is early April, so open to ideas. I liked doing the meetup in PDX for 100, so maybe something like that. Oh by the way, Sprocket 500 is coming. Just thought I'd mention that.   As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! Gather round the virtual campfire where fellow listeners and bike tourists join together to give all their reasons to say, thanks bicycle touring! Pedalshift Live Coming in December... Saturday 12/7 3pm EST! New tour reveal, revisiting cycling WNY and an AMA! See you in March! I'll be presenting at the 2020 National Bike Summit! Details to come, but looking to do a meetup if listeners will be in DC.  Thanks Bicycle Touring   Hi Tim, this is Vince Greco from Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. I hope this isn't too late to get into U. I know it's a day after the deadline but one of the share what I'm thankful for that bicycle touring. I am thankful for all the places and the distance that bicycle touring can take me, but this year in particular. I am thankful for a beautiful fall Gap ride with motion decent, although colder than I expected whether it was nice to see the Gap in a different season, cuz usually I end up writing in the spring or early summer, but I'm also very thankful for your podcast. Actually. I ended up adding the entire Montour Trail into my ride. In fact, I did a loop. I started in Cumberland went out to Pittsburgh on tour and came back to Cumberland again, but I heard about riding the Montour from your podcast and how to do that. So just wanted to say thanks.       Hey Tim, Brian Benton a long time listener and the podcast I think I haven't missed any episodes. So my my thankful thing I would say I'm thankful for the opportunity. I had this year off, you know and Gap trail with my son. He graduated with his PHD in physical therapy in May and then the Stars aligned we were able to do an eight-day Bike Tour since I'm a teacher. I had this summer off and he hadn't started his job yet. He isn't a cyclist but he was an incredibly excellent shape from playing college level Ultimate Frisbee on his biggest complaint on the trip was his butt hurt em, I think we can all relate to that and one of the best memories I have from the trip was standing at a waterfall on the gap for 30 minutes and neither of us felt the need to talk. I don't know if we'll ever get to do this again ever, but that makes this just an extra special trip. So I say thanks Tim for the motivation to do the CNO and GAP Trails. I have a memory with my son that I'll never forget dead. Thursday for the podcast    We don’t celebrate thanksgiving where I’m from (New Zealand), but practicing thankfulness is always nice so I thought I’d join in.    I’m thankful for the friendly and helpful people I’ve met through cycling. My local bike shop has been really great with helping me understand basic bike maintenance, and what I do and don’t need. I’m also thankful for the cool bike activist people in my area that I’ve met recently. They campaign for better cycling infrastructure, lawmaking, and driver/biker education, and I feel lucky to have made some awesome new friends. (Rory in New Zealand)     I have a kind of strange thing I give thanks for. I like to listen to audiobooks when on long rides; what I've found is that books, or sections of books, get linked in my mind to the places I was riding while listening to them. For instance last spring I rode down from Astoria (re)listening to mostly Robert Heinlein books. I was on a book called Friday in southern Oregon and I can't think of the Seven Devils without thinking of that book too. (Ray)     I think my reflections are like my fellow travelers.  Reflections of kindness, beauty, making friends, overcoming challenges and exploration fill the bicycle travelers' "carts."  I'm no different.   As a photographer I have always loved sharing (marketing) images of what I see around me.  One of my favorite slogans is "seeing is believing."  So many people in our face-paced society never or seldom take the time to SEE the world around them.     Seeing is much easier when you travel by bicycle.   You can actually choose to SEE and to capture a moment that is in front of you.  Sharing images are easy in today's world, so now everyone can enjoy it ~ not just you.     The opportunity to SEE is my favorite thing about bicycle travel.  SEEing never lets you down ~ it makes memories forever! (Keith)     I guess I'm thankful for buying an e-bike. It's kind of reinvigorated by love bicycling. I love riding it and it's just it's just the best thing it's kind of heavy, but it it gets the job done. It's a tract verb plus and got a good deal on it, and I put the 700 Mi on it since Memorial Day. (Mark)     I’m thankful for all of the great people I’ve met through biking. You won’t meet better people than you will in the cycling community.(Scott)     I'm thankful to have been blessed with a home on the C&O. I am especially blessed to ask passersbys if I can assist them. I've met some wonderful people who have stopped to use hose, have a snack or rest by fire pit. I am so very Thankful to be on the trail.(Clara)     I'm thankful that at 62 years old I can still cycle 50-60 miles a day. Thankful for all the friends I've made over the years while biking and the kindness people show you while on the trails. I had a flat tire once and every person that rode by stopped to offer assistance. A great group of people!(Diane)       Bicycling has really saved me from myself. At 345 and gaining my PTSD was making me eat myself to death. I was so depressed that I thought of suicide daily. I figured I could eat till my hearts content and be dead in a year. When it didn't happen fast enough I got hostile. Fired, fat and hostile I ran low on money and took to the trail for cheap transportation. 2 years ago and I'm 210 now, ride almost every day sometimes as far as 60 miles , sometimes pulling my dog to the park. I'm so thankful I stumbled upon this obvious solution to both my mental and physical health.(Paul)     I am so grateful that the Great Allegheny Passage runs through my home town of Connellsville. The town that boomed in the coal and coke era is slowly being revitalized thanks to the formerly under appreciated beauty of the area that is now highlighted by the trail. I am blessed to be witnessing that rebirth, and to still be able to enjoy the freedom of riding miles and miles with no traffic concerns. I am thankful to be part of the wonderful diverse community of bikers, all sharing a childlike joy found in biking to new places. (Barb)     Thankful that I am in my cathedral of light with the sunlight filtering through the green or gold in areas we would never see unless you are on the seat of a bike!(Mary Ann)         Love riding the GAP, Ive met people from all over, the scenery is 2nd to none, hope to ride again soon before it gets to cold.(Phil)     I am thankful for still being able to ride. I know it won't last a long time, but while it does, every ride is special! (Johnny)     Thankful I’ve been able to ride the GAP / C&O in it’s entirety in 2015 and many varying rides on portions of it. Riding in over a dozen MS 150 rides and recently riding a ride from Los Angeles to San Diego for The MS Society as well. Always feels good to help people as I’m riding & enjoying the bike.(Tom)     Thankful for all out great R2T trails for us runners to run on!!!!!!(Anthony)     I am thankful I got the opportunity to ride from Pittsburgh to D.C. this summer. One of my major bucket list rides checked off!(Ed)     I'm thankfull for two great rides on the GAP one in the spring and one in the fall. Thankful for the great weather I experieced on both occasions and spectacular color on the fall ride. Thankfull I have a friend who now has an eBike like me so we can travel together and thankfull we can cost share.(Roxanne)     The freedom, the openness, opportunity to just go. Im thankful for that. Grateful and blessed to have had what i feel to be an epic roundtrip on the GAP and C&O. It changed my life. The people i met changed me. And this was my first time being on those trails. Im thankful for it all!(Ryan)     I am truly thankful for the opportunity to explore and have crazy adventures on two wheels. To have a sister Kathleen who travels with me on long journeys, constantly inspires me to keep going & refuses to give up regardless of injuries, bike malfunctions and inclement weather. In addition.. she has opened my eyes to this great cycling community who are some of the most magnificent memorable people I have ever met! - Cheers to all & have amazing holidays!!!(Stephanie)     I am thankful for family and good friends. Bicycle touring is great but nothing replaces family & friends. Invite them along.(PPP)     I am thankful for all the wonderful people that I have met along my journey on the c&o the gap and also the Montour trail now. I'm thankful that my life is started over in a better way. Before I started my journey October 9th 2019 everyday I contemplated suicide. My depression and all had me so bad I didn't like people I didn't like my own life. But since I started my journey on the c&o in Harpers ferry I have met so many people, so many good people they have changed my outlook of life and now I can't see my life any other way thank you to everybody that has been there to help me out mentally physically financially, much love to everyone. (Michael)       I'm thankful for ALL of these, in terms of bike-touring! The people/experiences are perhaps at "the top", but everything else is "right behind" ;-] (Pete)     I am thankful for my health that allows me to feel the sense of wonderment that I experience when riding somewhere far from home under my own power. It is a feeling of vulnerability and excitement all wrapped up in one.(Chris)     I'm able to take something that I use for two wheel therapy, commuting, hauling from the grocery store, riding with friends & family, achieving personal stretch goals, and then take it on a vacation self-supported at low cost and low emissions to some of the most beautiful places in the world as well as down the road from home. From an over-nighter to extended travel, how could I not be thankful for that? :-) (Rod)     The communities and organizers who have created safe, integrated as well as alternative routes for me as I enter and explore different regions.(Paul)     I'm thankful to have access to a machine that lets me slow down and truly enjoy the journey.(Peggy)     I’m grateful that the bear on the trail ahead of us ignored the pebbles we were firing at it with our slingshots. We thought it would just leave and we could continue bikepacking on the trail. Instead we had to push our bikes through a river to get past it.(Adrian)     I'm thankful for my health and for the kindness of strangers (also, you have an awesome last name :) (Suzanne Mooney)     Nice surprises, like a beautiful sunrise in the morning when I didn't expect it. Thankful when I manage to weather difficulties, and come through them (Caroline) Pedalshift Society As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! So you're heading out on bike tour and want to document it for yourself, friends, family and more? On this episode: tips on sharing your bike tour with the world! Pedalshift Live Coming in December... Saturday 12/7 3pm EST!  What are you thankful for? The annual Thanksgiving show drops in a few weeks and there's still time to get your input into the show. What are YOU thankful about in the realm of bike touring? Call the Pedalshift voicemail and add your voice to things... take a minute and tell everyone what you're thankful for. Be anonymous if you'd like... also email in your thoughts or hit social media with them.   The Lab: Sharing Your Bike Tour Why document? Let's friends and family track your adventure Safety log Gives you something to look back on Maybe fodder for something else?  Ways to share Blog/Writing Old school. Especially good if you're a writer more than a talker. Tons of platforms that are free, but consider some of the bike tour specific ones like Cycleblaze, CGOAB, etc. Facebook Broad reach, lots of people on it Can limit exposure if you want Check out PPP on FB. He does a nice job. Twitter Great for immediate hits and also can include location pings Low impact on your data plan Microjournaling Instagram My personal choice for micro journaling these days Creates a visual map to go back to Allows for some written material too Autopost to other platforms Audio I get a lot of questions on this, for perhaps obvious reasons Yes you can get a professional recorder iPhones are more than adequate for field recording The white earbuds? Sneaky good mics! Voice memo app is perfectly great and simple to use. There are others. Record in the highest fidelity you can - compressing to mp3 in the field may save space, but you sometimes lose the ability to EQ properly. Record a lot, edit at home Video Not my priority, but always glad I have it Takes SO. MUCH. TIME. to go through and edit Vlog style versus doc style Live broadcasts really aren't worth the data hit and battery hit Record in the highest quality you can - I get a bigger phone storage capacity expressly for this. If you're a drone pilot, be mindful of flight restrictions. Also... use sparingly? Content Focus on people and experience Know that touring alters perception... you may be surprised at what you document Don't over document. If the trip becomes more about that than the ride, you might regret it (caveat... if your primary reason is to make a doc of a trip rather than go on a tour and document it) Know your audience... what are they interested in? Expectations afterwards There are *so many* journals out there! Topics TBA, but we'll do an AMA so bring your questions or shoot them my way via social or email! The Journal: Bicycle Touring Etiquette Thanks to a listener for this recommendation... I've managed to lose the email or message from social media that has it Camping Watch your spacing For shared campsites, saying hello and asking if it's cool to camp there Assess your neighbor's desire to chat and respect it Don't brag about your exploits - it's a bad look Be open with information that can help others, but don't force opinions and suggestions on people Share stuff if you have extra Respect quiet hours Respect late sleepers as you take off Leave no trace Think ahead - reduce the amount of packaging and garbage before you roll Always have a garbage bag - doesn't matter what it is Pack all garbage out and even take some that's not yours If there are no bathroom facilities learn backcountry techniques (cat hole, etc.) and please respect water bodies. Speed + Passing Some trails have a speed limit - respect that, particularly in more crowded areas Many trails and some laws require bells for passing - know before you go Use bells or call "on your left" boldly but (please!) in a friendly way Do it every time even if you're frustrated that the runners are wearing headphones and don't hear you! It's so easy to get frustrated, but remember we're sharing the trails with others Avoid lecturing other trail users, especially if you're a visitor Be cool Respect boundaries with people you meet and other tourists. Watch your consumption. You're an ambassador... act like one!   Pedalshift Society As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! Stealth camping is always a hot topic in bike touring, and our last episode on the topic got some great responses that deserve revisiting! On this episode, a take from law enforcement's perspective, tips on how to stay clean with no facilities, and more on how to find a good spot. Housekeeping Next tour I'll be riding the C&O in a  few weeks (in fact, just did a stealth camping overnight as I type!). Pedalshift Live Be sure to join the show live August 30, 9pm ET! Topics TBA, but we'll do an AMA so bring your questions or shoot them my way via social or email! The Lab: Stealth Camping Revisited More thoughts on stealth camping on bike tour (check out Pedalshift 161 for my tips) Law enforcement perspective Thanks for the recent episode on stealth camping. Probably no topic has the breadth of opinions among your listeners as this. Maybe pannier pronunciation.   I’ve been [in] law enforcement...for 15 years. In that role I’ve managed these types of contacts regularly. I like to apply the principles you discussed when dispersed camping on tour, but like you, avoid explicitly prohibited areas.   I wish to emphasize the safety points you made about when you are contacted (i.e. caught), especially by law enforcement. Those consequences need not be dire if you keep your head.   Whether law enforcement or private individual, keep your voice low and keep your hands visible. This is not the time to be rumaging through your equipment.   Your legal status, if you are contacted by law-enforcement, is likely “detained”. You’re not under arrest, but nor are you free to leave. This is not the time to start packing up your stuff and huffily proclaim that you’ll “just leave”. Follow the officer’s directions. Remember that he doesn’t know you from Adam or Eve, and more likely than not is going to treat you with great caution.   An officer has about 20 minutes (case law) to confirm or dispel his suspicions that you’ve committed either a civil infraction (you know, camping where camping isn’t allowed, posted or not), or trespassing. During this time you are in the same legal situation as if you’ve been pulled over by an officer for a vehicle traffic violation. Behave accordingly. You must identify yourself (at least with a verbal name and date of birth). You do not need to present a photo ID or driver’s license if it’s not a traffic offense. He may ask you questions. Remember that if he’s just investigating a civil infraction, you don’t have 5th amendment rights to not incriminate yourself with statements. Shush, because it’ll be used against you.   The consequence will vary from a warning and “OK, you can stay just tonight!”, to a criminal notice (arrest without booking) for Trespassing. In [my particular state], this... probably won’t be applied unless you’ve previously been told not to be at that location.   Another possibility to consider is that in my jurisdiction the violator can be expelled from all parks for anywhere from 48 hours to a lifetime, depending on the offense. Expulsions for 30 days are common, and can really put a bind in your travel plans down the road.   Of course, all this only applies to my jurisdiction. Your mileage may vary, as you say! The best thing you can do is make your peace with being caught ahead of time. Be comfortable with the foreseeable consequences, and you can then just relax.   PS People are going to stealth camp, might as well do it as low impact and safely as possible.   Downside of stealth camping... no facilities to clean up in! Richard Wizensky has a solution:   On days that are light, I keep a towel and a spray bottle of witch hazel available - add a few drops of essential oil for bonus smell. The witch hazel works to kill odor producing bacteria like alcohol but doesn’t dry your skin.   Techniques for finding spots Google maps! I use the satellite view to see where there are big clusters of trees and pick a few good spots. Going to street view can be super helpful to get the "on the ground" look and then you can go from there.   Good resource from a big time stealth camper... Douglas Conlin - YouTube channel. He's a 100% stealth camper and did an interrupted tour from Michigan to Tennessee last year (in the winter, no less). Quite the character, but seeing how he scopes out stealth sites is a real lesson. He vlogged his trip so you can see a bunch of his camp sites. Part five of biking DC to Cincinnati. An epilogue story from my evening in Cincinnati, plus 11 takeaways from my trip from DC to Ohio. Curated photos over at Instagram. All photos here. The Journal: DC to Cincinnati Takeaways 1 - Ride your ride: loaded work for you? Great! Minimalist bikepacky? Awesome 2 - Prepare for a reasonable range of conditions 3 - Miles/Day versus experiences 4 - Flexibility in schedule 5 - Staying clean can be a big deal for mental elements of  touring 6 - Good batteries help remove worries about your ABCs ("always be charging") 7 - Stealth camping is super fun. Spray painted tarp works ok! 8 - 3 days gets you to happy - 7 days gets you in a long term rhythm - 14 days says take a break 9 - Get a long ride in when you can 10 - Meet people. The ride is nice, but meeting people is often the best part of the trip 11 - All trails are different. Make sure you're riding the ones that fit how you want to ride! C&O - more backcountry/wildernessy. It's not for everyone. GAP - in the middle OTET - best overall surface (mostly paved) I happen to like them all and I like the challenge of having to shift gears (figuratively) to handle the differing surfaces.   Followup The C&O outage at MM52 now has a low-level crossing. The permanent replacement is scheduled for the end of 2019.   The GAP keeps on truckin. No word yet on the rumored campground near or in Ohiopyle SP.   The OTET is encountering some severe flooding, especially in CVNP. The detour with no detour south of Akron is open again. Epilogue Cincinnati, OH   Guy on Vine yells over at me - “you should ride that bike across country!” I turn and see a late-50s  guy approach with an excitement I've encountered before, just not in the middle of a city when my bike's touring character is a little more incognito without the panniers and bungees.   His name is Martin and he’s got s plan of his own. Ride from Cincinnati to DC with a bike and a lightweight tent.   He didn’t know that’s exactly what I had just done in reverse.   After I tell him that, we talk for 20 minutes about my bike... gear... how he could tell just by looking at my unloaded bike that it was built for touring... his plans... his hopes and dreams.   Our conversation turns to shaking off the ties that bind for a little while and looking to trips like this to reconnect with nature and explore freedom, even for just a little while. As I watch him walk off with a spring in his step, I know there's no way he's not riding that ride. It's happening.   Pedalshift Society As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! May 8   Hotel night was the right call - it wasn’t a full recharge but it was necessary to pull off this morning’s moves. Had to do some client work at the hotel and get it all in before the WiFi totally went down. Got lucky! Lows were in the upper 40s which is the real comfort limit of my sleeping gear... not sure if this is going to continue but we’ll see My route from the hotel brought me by the closest of my assessed wild camping spots - turned out to be swampy and totally unsuitable. Google Earth can only tell so much! Kent State is a gorgeous campus - really wish I had had the energy to hang out in the town. I like many college towns and the vibe. Bus stop at the student center was totally unmarked but I took the chance to start unloading and then a rider came by. Very thankful for the heads up from the KSU alum! The bus had no rack and I would have freaked out had I not been told they let bikes in the back. Really cold in Cleveland - I was fine but my mindset has been more summery conditions and this tour has been anything but that. Rolled out of the city center toward OTET MM 0 and discovers Cleveland Bagels. They were legit for this Empire State native who had a favorite bagel shop in law school called “Hot Bagels.” Was nice to have a view of Lake Erie while I had an everything bagel and a cup of coffee. -- Was excited to see a bike station with a pump and it managed to just deflate my tire - oh well, hand pump to the rescue.. Getting out of Cleveland was so-so. It’s signed at some points but could use some more “HEY! This is a trail that goes to Cincinnati! Also, turn here cause the trails not done yet!” One downside to my go go go schedule is I’m missing out on spending time in cool places. Future tours will be much more about hanging out I think Stopped for a second breakfast and the place was playing You Are the Girl by The Cars (an oddly deep cut that’s not even on their greatest hits album) so I played a bunch of them as I headed south. The. Nirvana unplugged because I’ve been thinking about them a lot lately. Wow is the trail through Cuyahoga Valley NP nice! Very compact (if rutted in parts) and effortlessly fast. Reminds me very much of the Erie Canal towpath near where I grew up. Big detours throughout with huuuuge steep hills. And then... a closure with no detour! Thanks to PSS member Lisa Hart for bailing me out... I figured out a way around but since I was staying with her and her husband tonight they graciously offered to pick me up at the outage and take me to the next trailhead. And then I had a wonderful evening chatting biking with Lisa, her friend and fiancé- super appreciated! Tomorrow I’m ten miles behind on what was supposed to be a 65 mile day. Audibles will be called... May 9 Super great breakfast prepared by Lisa’s fiancé then a drop off where I could resume after the closure Summit County Trail was great... quality drops a bit in Stark County, but not that bad Headwinds! Missed getting ice cream (closed) in Canal Fulton, so pressed on to Massillon for food. Michigan guys are on the road route between trail segments so I anticipate running into them midway? Still unsure on destination- going to my original camp isn’t out of he question but the impending rain may have something to say about that. Stealth camp! May 10 Rain came down relatively hard for a few hours overnight - unlike Confluence I didn’t have the condensation issue and I was happy and dry. Stealth spot was close to perfect. There was a little exposure to the cemetery side if I stood up and my head came above the pile of downed trees, but the park side was perfectly camouflaged. It was clearly a drinking spot for locals so I cleared a bag full of cans and bottles, leaving the space better than I found it. It takes me up to 40 minutes to break camp and I think I need to figure out a quicker system. The trick is I need access to most panniers and two dry bags, so I essentially need to totally unload. Also getting the bags inside the tent is a good idea since they’re so damn ORANGE

May 4 Slept HARD til 6:30 WiFi not so hot Gas station cuisine Weather looks unsettled - rain likely Stick in my front wheel since Paw Paw??!! May need air in my tires - beyond supple Tree down requiring going on tracks for a brief moment... but none on C&O which was a miracle! So muggy! Went to shorts Trail was good in parts, soft in others Felt slow Tunnels have a perceptible cool breeze that hits you well before the opening Mason-Dixon Line Fog in Big Savage tunnel!! ECD! Like a rocket tied to my bike - even with a headwind Ice cream as the rain starts in Meyersdale Not sure where I’ll stop? With rain likely all night it would be best to push but energy will dictate —— Ride to Rockwood was delightful AF A little light rain is nice to ride in if it’s not a slog Why is it always raining when I’m in Rockwood Bought a sandwich and they were playing Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House... delightful Definitely going to Confluence. I have 18 in me! Easter Egg on the MM44 Post... First real PGH influence - tattered Pens towel posted outside, recalling better championship days Also Whoopee Pies - Pennsylvania’s best contribution to society if it weren’t all sugar and therefore poison Rockwood always strikes me as a bit suspicious of me. Bar next door was playing a deep cut from Poison. Time to go. Jammed those 18 miles - listened to 90s music on shuffle. Turns out Filter is great to bike to. Army Corps campground only $5 buuuut showers not open Like Cube said... today was a good day May 5 Rained all night and will likely rain all day in Confluence. Interior of tent is starting to condense on the tarp so staying put doesn’t ensure staying perfectly dry To zero or not to zero? The further north the earlier the rain ends Going to trust my rain wear and my dry bags and push at least to Connellsville and assess 12 miles to Ohiopyle was as expected - muddy and steady but slow rain. Tried passing a biker with a trailer and a dog taking up the whole trail - dog sped up to my full passing speed so I just backed off They didn’t like being followed so they pulled off. Not a great moment but understandable Then a downed tree took some real effort to get over (me and panniers) and under (rest of the bike) Could use a laundromat - likely tomorrow unless I call the day in Connellsville Aaaand I made it to a laundromat! And man was I soaked! It was cool enough that not addressing my state would be bad so this was a great time to stop. Feeling good - not sure if this is my stop for the night or if I push on an extra 40 miles and earn that zero day! —— The GAP after an all day rain is no better than the C&O after and all day rain. No trail handles it well unless it’s paved. Like riding on the beach from Connellsville to West Newton - no more rocket tied to the back of the bike! Rain down to occasional sprinkles Getting pizza at Fox’s hoping to gather some energy for the final push to Draco (about 9 miles) May arrive after dark No signal there IIRC I pass the 300 mile total mark in a mile! Tomorrow looks like great weather for my wrap up of the GAP and the start of “new to me” for this tour! May 6 Trail from West Newton to Dravo was substantially better - hard packed and fast. —Not sure why the other portions were so bad But the GAP does recover more quickly than C&O Apparently the ACA led Eastern Express group started in the last day or two. They’re assuredly experiencing bad conditions Camp at Dravo is excellent - stocked with wood and heavenly. Pitched my tent in an Adirondack for extra privacy and went to sleep Plans - PGH for a bit then bus FF and ride until I get to a reasonable wild camp spot. May not ID the place for obvious reasons but I’ll describe elements of it. Missed Thrones last night - will watch during my break while I wait for sundown prior to my stealth camp tonight COLD night was contrasted with nice warm sun. Felt good coming to PGH but had to change from heavier gear to sun riding gear. Because it was closer to lunch I went to Urban Tap in the south side, which I really liked on my  trip last fall. Got some lower alcohol sours with a salad (it’s shocking what you crave on tour) with my bike locked to itself a few feet away on the sidewalk outside the open sliding windows. A gaggle of nearly graduate Pitt students were celebrating a bday over drinks nearby. Bus leaves near Heinz Field then a less than ideal ride. Here we go! Road route from Ambridge, PA to Kent, OH May 7 Morning came early! Did a riding morning edition —— Entered Ohio with little fanfare Shoulders shrank (at times to nothing) but drivers were good at giving a wide berth Got on Bike Route J which was low traffic but had simply awful stretches of pavement. Deep ruts and potholes plus scattered gravel everywhere. Rideable but meh. Scenic farms and houses on large plots of land dominated the day Decided to skip the stealth camping and get an inexpensive hotel about a 20 minute ride from the Kent State campus. Simply put, I need a shower worse than I need to save face as camping guy. Headwinds were gusty and tough today Mixed terrain - hills flattened a bit as I got closer to Kent but the last few miles had some eff you’ers mixed in Cheaper hotels were away from the campus and city center so I’m missing out on checking it all out. Too biked out after 68 miles to add more! Inflatable rafts plus touring bikes equals bikerafting! On this episode I chat with longtime friend and bike adventurer Maggie Lonergan about her recent foray into bikerafting the Colorado River near the Hoover Dam, plus more on converting from being a racer and future Scandinavian adventures. Bikerafting with Maggie Lonergan   Maggie Lonergan lives in San Francisco, still holding onto her New England ways. Questions covered Your adventure background is pretty fascinating... we'll focus on bikerafting the Colorado in Blackwater Canyon on this show, but you've got a pretty eclectic background from races up towers to racing bikes. What's your arc been like? Would you consider your touring to be more bikepacking-centric? What's an ideal trip for you? I know you were into racing for a bit - are you still doing that? How does that contrast with the adventure bicycling for you? Let's talk bike rafting. What was the genesis of the idea? First I wanted to ask about getting the gear from CA to Vegas... did you fly? How did that Dogsbody bag work out? What was the Vegas airport like assembling your gear? Any side eye from tourists with a different take on Vegas? How was the ride to the pickup spot? That morning you inflated the raft before being picked up by the outfitter... how big is it deflated on the bike and what kind of pump do you use to inflate it? You're plunked down on the river as impending storms are about to hit (nice... rain in the desert, right?). Before it's getting the raft on the bike... how do you secure the bike to the raft? Do you need much paddling experience or training to pull off a trip like this? Is it more stable than a traditional hard kayak? You hauled a bunch of food with you and I know you did a little alcohol stove cooking and a little cold soaking. Do you decide what you're doing based on mood or do you have more method to the madness? On the ride back, you experienced some bright line transitions from wilderness of the canyon to Vegas Baby Vegas... did that surprise you more than you expected? This was a shakedown for some bike rafting in Europe this summer... what were your takeaways? How can folks follow your adventures and writing? http://hiccupingyogi.com Pedalshift Society As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! Guthrie Straw from The Sprocket Podcast joins the show to help out on the third installment of the beginner series. Steve is riding with a group on his upcoming charity ride - what are the things to think about in terms of group dynamics on bicycle tour? We cover camping, riding together, differing skill levels, eating, emergency safety nets and more. Beginner Series: Group Dynamics on Bike Tour   Guthrie Straw is an alternative transit advocate living in Portland, Oregon. When not working tirelessly on the Sprocket Podcast, he enjoys pursuing his goal of exploring every single marked bicycle path in the Portland Metro area (and he will get there one day!!!). He can often be seen at Pedalpalooza events, or meandering off to the coast and nearby mountain ranges on his bike. Having been in the saddle since a young age, he understands the need to nurture the ambitions of future cyclists, and that there really is no “right” way to bike, as long as your fulfilled in what you’re doing.  Guthrie runs and maintains PedalDream.com, a website devoted to inspiring people to leave the car at home, and enjoy travel in the saddle.  Guthrie hopes to cycle from the tip of Alaska to Patagonia, but until then he is doing his best to help people discover the joy and freedom of letting a bike into their lives.   Hear the other parts of the beginner series (episodes 158and 150).   Questions covered With just a couple people on a tour I’m guessing the “rules of engagement” can be generally worked out along the way. With a larger group (currently 8), do you need to have a set of rules/guidelines defined beforehand? Our group will have a wide range of athletic prowess. How do you balance things out so people on the extremes aren’t a) left in the dust, or b) super bored/annoyed? What if someone feels like they can’t go on and have to drop out? Who rides first? Do you rotate randomly? Have a schedule of some sort? Does it matter? How spread out should you be during the day?  Any specific concerns when riding in a group with no SAG support? Planning meals & sleeping arrangements for a group? Pedalshift Society As always we like to close out the show with a special shoutout to the Pedalshift Society! Here are som pics from a recent tour of the New South Wales mid coast in Australia. Keep up the good work. Andrew Andyfromorange   Great American Rail-Trail 4000 miles car free? The Great American Rail Trail is a project that would link up existing trails into a network that stretches from DC to Seattle. Super behind this... imagine riding across country on a traffic-free route??   https://www.railstotrails.org/great-american-rail-trail/   This is such a big deal, we're skipping a best-of this month and I'm scheduled to have an interview with Kevin Mills, the Senior VP of Policy at RTC. That will drop next week while I'm on tour!   The Journal: Preparing the Cross-Florida Bike Tour Florida has the “bones” to be a superior bike touring state and I’m taking advantage of as many of them as I can.   Drivers on secondary roads are reportedly used to bikes. The state has a good site remarking traffic volumes and my route adjustments track either roads with bike infrastructure or low traffic roads that are long and straight where there aren’t shoulders to speak of.   Shout to Greg from MI (yes one of the “Michigan guys” I met on the Katy in 18) for his thoughts on things and the DOT map!   https://tdaappsprod.dot.state.fl.us/fto/ gives you daily traffic usage for Florida roads to help with planning.   Robert in Titusville asks... Why did I not choose the Coast to Coast trail?  Simple answer is once I decided not to make this a camping trip, the best route kept me closer to larger towns in order to get better lodging options. The C2C route is excellent, but it swings well north of Tampa and routes through a lot of rural Florida before winding its way to Orlando. My best guess is if I do another winter tour in FL, this will be my route, but with camping.  Sidebar... I'm unreasonably weirded out by FL wildlife, even though I've camped in South FL before and there was no issue.     Tampa to Lakeland: Day 1 Lyft from airport Cypress Point Park to Lakeland, FL 40 miles   Storyline: Tampa is a bit of a maze of bike lanes and sidewalks, but getting out is ok.    Lakeland to Kissimmee: Day 2 52 miles   Storyline: excellent infrastructure of lanes and trail, then a very rural road (no shoulder) that works well until toward the very end. Transit FF is there to bypass a truly shitty stretch, but a grass walk of less than a mile gets to a sidewalk if the train timing is off.   Highlight: riding a portion of the Van Fleet trail (paved 29 miles - I'm riding about 6)   Google maps is ok but also have a more refined RWGPS for the last 6 or so miles. For GMaps use 1st option through Polk City - lanes and bike trails! Water and food up in Polk City... not much else for 20+ miles and really til Kissimmee In Poinciana, option to take Sunrail to Kissimmee if timing is...

The trip I refer to specifically was highlighted in Pedalshift 084. All tagged GAP content on the site can be found here.   Doug Riegner is the Director of Community Relations of the Allegheny Trail Alliance, a coalition of trail organizations charged with promoting and enhancing the Great Allegheny Passage, a 150-trail system between MD, PA.  During the off seasonDougworks to publishTrailGuide, an authorized publication of both the GAP trail and 184.5-mile C&O Canal Towpath. Through his work with TrailGuideDouguncovers, develops, and maintains healthy relationships with local communities & leaders, visitor bureaus, and trail related businesses along the 335-mile corridor.     Doug is also a National Parks Service Trails & Rails volunteer serving on the Capitol Limited “Amtrak” train between Cumberland and Washington DC.   In your best elevator pitch, what's the Allegheny Trail Alliance and what is it doing to make bike touring in the region better? 2018 was a challenging year for weather on the trails - what's the status of the tunnels and trail conditions as we head into the off season? There were some rumors that Ohiopyle was going to get a hiker/biker campsite at trail level - were those rumors true and is there any new info on that? Any other news on camping options on the GAP midtrail down to Cumberland? You've mentioned on some of the forums that the C&O is getting some resurfacing work done - do you know if NPS sticking to its guns on the historic nature of the towpath surface, or are they making some exceptions (like Big Slackwater's concrete surface)? We like crazy stunts in addition to tours around here - marathon through-riding of the CO/GAP is definitely one! How much of a thing is it? It feels like there's been a real growth in numbers in bike touring traffic the last few years. Does ATA have any data on that? What's your go-to order at Yough Twister? We're a solid few days into 2019. What's the thing you're most looking forward to on the GAP this year? Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. I would be super grateful if you'd leave a rating or review in iTunes, Stitcher, or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution. Also, I read 5-star reviews out on the show because I love you. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it'd be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Never forget, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride. Forever Forward, ~C

I'm here to wish you a happy new year AND to let you know that Season Three of the Joyride Podcast is coming in January 2018. That's right. Ten, fresh new episodes delivered right to your earholes on Sunday mornings, starting January 7th featuring all new voices in new settings. This season we welcome our first international guests and record our first LIVE shows at Stream PDX - the podcasting and storytelling studio INSIDE of a vintage airstream trailer. That's where the guys at the Sprocket Podcast record, and where we recorded the 100th episode of the Pedalshift Project.  I was fighting a major cold and still had a blast. I'm stoked to have access to Stream PDX because it means I'll have a studio space to hang out with and interview some of the rad women and folks in the Portland community. I can't wait to share these conversations with you. Also, snacks y'all. In the meantime, please check out the brand spankin NEW website at thejoyridepodcast.com. There you can sign up for the newsletter to stay in touch, check out the back list of episodes, listen to the show right from the website, and share your favorites with a friend. Also, check out the resources page where you can find a list of my favorite podcasts, books, apps, gear, and more. It is an evolving work in progress. Friends, a dear friend of mine asked recently how to support the show, and I sure appreciate that. I give my time and energy because I love making this show for you, but there are costs involved with keeping a podcast up. So, ThisCoryWicks, thanks for asking, now it's my turn. If you dig the Joyride and you have it within your means to do so, I'd be honored it if you would consider contributing even just a dollar toward the show. Go to thejoyridepodcast.com/support to make a one-time or recurring contribution via Paypal. Your support will make the show possible and keep it free of advertising by helping yours truly with the hosting costs, studio fees, and equipment upgrades. Monthly subscribers will get perks like stickers, postcards, access to the Joyride Google group + online hangouts, and more to come. Once production costs are covered I can look into upgraded gear for better field recording as well as show transcripts for our friends in the deaf community. So, if you've enjoyed the show and you have the means, please cruise go on over to thejoyridepodcast.com/support to learn more and thank you in advance for your support! Don't forget to nominate a guest at bit.ly/joyrideguest. I am already taking requests for season five y'all! Who are the gals that inspire you to get outside and ride your damn bike? Tell me whose bike love story YOU want to hear on the show. Again that's bit.ly/joyrideguest. Alright Joyriders - like winter and spring and summer again, Season three is coming. Check out the new website, subscribe to the newsletter, tell a friend, make your bed, eat your vegetables, ride your bike, and whattaya say we get back together the first Sunday of 2018? Howdy Joyriders! Welcome our first returning guest! Friend of the show Jasmine Reese is back! We first met Jasmine back on episode #4 of The Joyride, that was a vintage, launch week episode and a whole lot has happened since! Jasmine has pedaled more than 14,000 miles across North America with her lovely fur baby and best friend, Fiji, and met countless kind souls and fiddle strings along the way. On this episode we talk about barter culture and the kindness of others, her favorite stretch of road, why she's transitioning to a recumbent trike, and plans for Jasmine and Fiji's next epic adventure. Learn all about Jasmine and Fiji's adventures over the years at FiJaPAW.com (short for Jasmine and Fiji Pedal Around the World) and click here to read her journals! The Pedalshift Project 069: Jasmine and Fiji bicycle the world, living the vagabond life. Recently, Jasmine was featured on USA Today. Check out the article here! Before we get into that, a few things: >> First, it is June, and in Portland where every month is bike month, June is something special because of Pedalpalooza, a month long celebration where community members organize different themed rides. I went to the kick off ride this year and was so glad that I did! I ran into a gal who came on the bike camping trip that I co-hosted with friend of the show Mollie Futterman (Joyride003) last year. We had a great time rolling around Portland, including taking the lane on a few bridges with a few hundred new friends. Yes, there was one or two disgruntled motorists and I did feel bad for them. Traffic here sucks already, and you then add in all the extra riders that the sun draws out, and a whole calendar of rides all month long, and well….. Might I suggest cycling? Anywhoo Joyriders, maybe one of these bike fun events will inspire you to organize something cool in your town. I will be attending the Bikecamping 101 ride on June 12. Say Hi if you see me. >>If you're listening to this within a few weeks of the release, June 2017, there's still time to get in on the WomenBikePDX Bike Camping for beginners. That's happening solstice weekend, it's for women and women identified folk, hosted by me, yours truly. it's a 24 mile casual ride suitable for any skill level, $10-$15 sliding scale includes camping, firewood, two meals, and a whole lotta good company. We're having an info session on June 13 at the Street Trust formerly known as BTA on NW Glisan in Portland. Join the Women Bike PDX Facebook group and register here. It's gonna be rad. >> Speaking of Rad, you might recall when Aqua Dublavee and I were having Coffee Outside a few shows back on Ep 24, I mentioned that Veni Vidi Velo was not happening this year, but I am so pleased to report that this is no longer true! V3 IS Happening it's the first weekend in August. it's for women trans femme bike glamping weekend in the Portland area. I will not be there this year, unfortunately, but I think YOU should go, and have a fantastic time. Email venividivelo[at]gmail[dot]com for questions or to register. Jasmine Reese! Here's some topics discussed in this episode in no particular order: Warm Showers Work Away Loneliest Road in America Trans Canada Trail C & O Canal Trail Kona Sutra I.C.E. Trikes CycleTote Dog Trailers Big thanks to Jasmine for hanging out! Be sure to follow her and Fiji on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and of course at FiJaPAW.com. I had a great conversation with Tim Mooney on the Pedalshift Project podcast. I shared my thoughts and experiences traveling as a vegan (and why I'm vegan), bike touring on a Brompton folding bike, incorporating public transportation into a bike tour, and much more. Check it out at pedalshift.net/077 or listen below. If you haven't heard the recordings from my fall 2016 tour of Maine and Vermont, find those here. Listening to last week's episode of Pedalshift reminded me I hadn't shared my own winter bike overnight audio journal. It was perhaps more successful than Tim's ride on the C&O Trail, albeit shorter, a few degrees warmer and solo (sans dog). It's easy to travel light when you're only going one night, and your end-of-tour meal is at an all-you-can-eat vegan buffet. Have you done any bike touring? Share your experiences below, via Twitter or using the contact form and I'll share it on an upcoming episode.

It doesn't take more than a few listens to the Pedalshift Project to know I pine for the state of Oregon... pretty much on a daily basis. You always hear about people who move to Oregon... well, I was the damn fool that moved away. That's why I try to get back as often as I can, and when I do I try to get myself and a bike out to the coast and soak in a few days or more of bicycling and camping down the Oregon coast. There are few places with a better reputation for bicycle touring, and fewer still that measure up to the hype. In the summer of 2016 I was a grizzled veteran of Oregon coast bicycle touring. I'd done it as a part of the full Pacific Coast in 2014 plus as a part of two trips to San Francisco the year before and after. But this time, I didn't have the time to do the whole thing. Sure I could have banged out miles but this time I wanted to go slow and savor the central part of the coast... Tillamook, Pacific City, Newport... places I think about when I'm dreaming up other tours. Places that I compare almost every tour I've ever done to. This trip was shorter, more relaxed, and probably more fun than some of my other adventures. Just goes to show you don't need to escape for weeks on end to really escape.
