Cultivating joy from the soil of joylessness | with Alastair Sterne

Stephanie welcomes Alastair Sterne to discuss the intricate and joyful dance of divine longing. They explore the innate human desire to seek God, the mysterious nature of joy, and the cultivated wisdom that guides us towards spiritual fulfillment in Christ. Alastair Sterne describes the innate human desire to connect with God as a dance. This longing, he notes, arises from the paradox of God being both mysterious and revealed. Jesus Christ reveals God in ways we are invited to explore. The pursuit of God is a journey towards an eternal dance—an unmistakable yearning threaded throughout humanity's history. Joy is not the absence of pain but a testament to divine triumph through trials. Alastair reflects on his personal battle with severe depression—a transformative experience that led him to explore the cultivation of joy. He draws inspiration from the apostle Paul's paradoxical journey: finding profound joy amidst suffering, as explained in Philippians. Joy serves as a divine longing, a sort of homesickness for the eternal. Alastair and Stephanie ponder the concept of joy, highlighting its elusive yet universally appealing nature. Joy transcends fleeting satisfaction, and aligns with a deep-seated desire for God's presence. Wisdom, as discussed by Alastair, provides a framework for cultivating environments where joy can thrive. Drawing upon Proverbs and Miroslav Volf's insights, he argues that wisdom is integral to experiencing "the crown of the good life." By nurturing habits and attitudes, we can plant seeds that allow joy to grow—even amidst life's challenges. Beauty too can be a bridge to divine presence: aesthetic experiences often lead to deeper spiritual connections. Beauty is a precursor to worship, signifying God's creative handiwork. Joy remains contagious regardless of its expression. It can manifest subtly through introspective personalities, or vibrantly via extroverted expressions. This contagious nature inspires others to pursue joy and strengthens the collective spiritual journey. The church calendar invites us towards spiritual awareness, as well. Alastair values the rhythm it brings, providing opportunities to reflect on joyous seasons like Eastertide and introspective ones like Lent. He emphasizes integrating these spiritual practices into daily life to heighten one's awareness of God's presence. Alastair Sterne invites us to explore the deeper dimensions of joy, wisdom, and longing. By embracing the dance with the divine, cultivating wisdom, and recognizing beauty in creation, we can align ourselves with a spiritual trajectory ever deeper into Christ. Alastair's prayer for all those who are listening, asking for God's joy to fill hearts, encapsulates the hope and assurance that await those seeking enduring joy in their spiritual journey. MORE ABOUT ALASTAIR STERNE Alastair Sterne (DIS, Fuller Theological Seminary) is a creative director turned pastor. He serves as the associate pastor at Coastline Church in Victoria, British Columbia. He previously partnered with Redeemer City to City and founded St. Peter's Fireside, a creative liturgical church in Vancouver. He is the author of Rhythms for Life: Spiritual Practices for Who God Made You to Be. Alastair and his wife, Julia, write and podcast together at ordinarymatters.org and collect joy with their daughters. MORE ABOUT “LONGING FOR JOY.” Can we still have joy in a world of pain and anxiety? The troubles around us and in our lives lead many of us into a joyless experience where despair and hopelessness are the norm. Yet something within us still longs for a joy that transcends our challenges and gives us meaning and satisfaction. Alastair Sterne says that our inner longings for joy actually point us to a God of joy who gives us both the capacity for joy and the realities of joyful experience. Sterne explores pathways to joy and why we often experience the absence of joy. He then offers theologically grounded and research-based practices for becoming people of joyful presence. Even if we are not temperamentally happy enthusiasts, we can gradually cultivate the deep abiding joy that we were created for and that enriches the world around us. SAMPLE FROM “LONGING FOR JOY” “When it comes to having children, someone once said, “You'll have less fun but more joy.” I'm not sure I agree with the former but I wholeheartedly agree with the latter—being a father has amplified my joy. Indeed, it is among my greatest joys. My eldest fractured her wrist yesterday. And today, we figured that out. Oops. It's a relatively minor fracture (compared to her broken arm five years ago). She's casted up and ready to go. I can't say it was fun to be in the emergency room for hours on end. But there was nowhere else I'd rather be than by her side . . . even though she was mostly engrossed in a movie or book. On my run this afternoon (my ankles are getting stronger, thanks be to God), I came across an intriguing bench. A rather idyllic path leads to it. The plaque reads: “A place to rest, reflect, and remember in loving memory of our grandmother, mother, sister, and daughter.” But when you sit on the bench, the view is rather, well, uninspired. A beautiful lake resides just around the bend, but this bench is positioned to look at . . . bushes. But should you sit, rest, and reflect, you will see more than bushes. You will see the beauty of the ordinary. The unremarkable transfigured into glory. I won't pretend to be able to name all the species of plants and trees. As I stood there, no longer perplexed by the position of the bench, I was enamored by the gift it offers: the beautiful ordinary. Back to being a father: most days are ordinary. And if I'm careless, they can even feel unremarkable—a compilation of repetitions. But then moments poke holes in the veneer of banality, like hospital waiting rooms for relatively minor injuries. You look at life with a renewed thankfulness and your heart becomes a little more sensitive too. When I sit, rest, and reflect, I find that joy often abides somewhere between thankfulness and a sensitive heart. Would it have been more fun to play hooky from school and go on a walk in the woods with my daughter rather than wait, and wait, and wait among the injured and sick? Of course. Nevertheless, joy sat quietly with us as we waited. The joy of fatherhood and the joy of a well-placed bench.” We invite you to check out the first episode of each of our series, and decide which one you will want to start with. The place a potential encounter will be, the dinner tables, the office tables, and the lunch tables—those are going to be the places of encounter.” - Abraham Cho “If you have a group of Christians who are very intentional about engaging the needs of the neighborhood, and are willing to serve it in a joyful, servant-hearted, humble way, that can oftentimes be the most important apologetic.” - Abraham Cho   “At the very heart of the gospel we read is a ministry of reconciliation. What is a Vision Statement and why does it matter? Is there a point in having a "Vision Sunday" at the beginning of the year, or is the congregation better served by "dripping vision" throughout the 52 Sundays of the calendar year? Is having a church vision even Biblical? Mike asks these questions and more to the more-than-capable Luke Simmons in a fun and informative conversation about the difference between church vision and church mission, and so many other topics having to do with leading healthy churches.  Luke Simmons is the founding and Lead Pastor of Ironwood Church, a growing church in the Phoenix metro area. He's been in full-time pastoral ministry since 2004 and has the scars to prove it. As a catalytic leader, he's been curating resources and coaching leaders for over a decade. Because Luke loves to learn and enjoys sharing what he's learned with other pastors, he founded Faithful and Fruitful to help pastors experience a lifetime of joyful, God-honoring ministry. Through resources, tools, and coaching experiences, he helps pastors build their confidence to lead for the long-haul in a changed and changing world. Faithful and Fruitful is a biblical vision of ministry and a lot of fun. Is there space for Asian American voices in the evangelical church? How have recent events changed how Asian Americans view both the local and broader church? On August 20, 2023, Exilic Church hosted a discussion called “An Asian American Moment: Our Place in the Future of the Evangelical Church.” Gene Joo, associate pastor of Exilic Church, moderated a conversation between Aaron Chung, senior pastor of Exilic Church and SOLA Council member, and Pastor Abe Cho, senior director of training at Redeemer City to City NYC and North America and associate pastor at Redeemer East Harlem. They shared their thoughts on the past, present, and future of the Asian American church through the following questions: On the past: Would you agree that the Asian-American church has largely remained siloed from the broader evangelical church in America? If so, why do you think that is? Here in New York, the Evangelical Asian American Church is considerably more underrepresented compared to the Black church, Jewish communities, and the White evangelical church. What is the historical and anthropological context behind how this came to be? How do you define what constitutes a multi-cultural church, and who gets to define it? Should every church be multi-ethnic? Is there a space for Asian American, Black, or Latino churches? Why are they important? How does this relate to what Rev. Martin Luther King said about Sunday morning being the most segregated time in America? On the present: Do Asian Americans have more to offer the church than just the topics of race and justice? If so, what are they? What is unique about this present moment for the Asian American Church? On the future: You might say that the Korean Ministry/English Ministry partnership represented the infancy of the Asian American church or at least the Korean American church. We're now starting to see the Asian American church in its adolescent phase as we see more independent Asian American churches and church plants. What might the Asian American church look like in its adulthood, and what sort of impact and contribution can you see it making to the larger evangelical church? Exilic Church, which is a supporter of SOLA Network, graciously shared this video with us so we could share it with our audience. We are grateful to them for leading this conversation. We hope this video sparks important conversations as we seek to build Christ's kingdom together. https://sola.network/article/a-place-for-asian-americans-in-the-future-of-the-evangelical-church/

The ministry of Gospel in Life is most effective in spreading the gospel when you are prayerfully and thoughtfully sharing our sermons, books and articles with your family, friends and coworkers who don't yet have a personal faith in Christ.  As an encouragement to you and to remind all of us about the beauty of the gospel, you'll hear a short message from Redeemer City to City's Tim Keller tribute video. In it, Tim gives a short and winsome presentation of the gospel which reminds us how salvation comes from God and we do nothing to save ourselves.   Tim and Kathy Keller have set Gospel in Life on a clear course to continue pointing people to the love and forgiveness found in Christ, and with your help and the work of the Holy Spirit we are praying that in the years ahead many people will come to know Jesus and many more will grow in their faith through this ministry.

The Gospel Coalition's Foundation Documents include a “theological vision for ministry,” originally drafted by Tim Keller. I had never heard of theological vision before I read this statement in 2007. Soon I learned that the concept originated by Richard Lints in his book The Fabric of Theology. Theological vision is the space between your doctrinal beliefs and your ministry programs. Theological vision helps you adapt your ministry to changing conditions while keeping centered on the unchanging gospel.Richard Lints has published a new book, Uncommon Unity: Wisdom for the Church in an Age of Division, which includes a foreword from Keller. In this book Lints exposes problems with the inclusion narrative of democracy and offers a better way forward to find unity amid unprecedented cultural diversity in our day.He writes, “The main thing I want to do in this book is to view the gospel story as the interpretive lens through which we best understand the telos of creation as a rich, deep, and complex unity-in-difference.”In this special season of Gospelbound, we're exploring in depth several key influences that appear in my book Timothy Keller: His Spiritual and Intellectual Formation. Lints is himself one of those influences. He is senior consulting theologian at Redeemer City to City in New York City. Previously, he served as Andrew Mutch Distinguished Professor of Theology at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, alma mater of Tim and Kathy Keller. I was grateful for this chance on Gospelbound to talk with him about unity, diversity, theological vision, and much more.

The second half of the book explores various spiritual practices that can aid in this journey. This Sunday Redeemer will have two worship services: our normal service in Newport Beach and a special service in Palm Springs for the 80+ guys attending our Men's Retreat! In Newport Beach, we are excited to announce that the Rev. Paul Kim, from Redeemer City to City Los Angeles, will be preaching. He will teach from Luke 18:9-30, 35-43, and gave us the following teaser…  This passage speaks to how we only come to Jesus as beggars, children, tax collectors—bankrupt, marginalized, condemned. But we unwittingly bring our “middle-class sensibilities” into our relationship with Jesus, which is a danger. The only way we come to Jesus is like a child, humbled and bankrupt. In this season of feeling weak, out-of-control, dependent, perhaps financially or physically threatened, there may be a spiritual opportunity to embrace the weakness. This is good for our souls, especially for those who are diligent and accomplished. In Palm Springs, we are excited to have the Rev. Dr. Peter Leithart teaching on the book of Revelation for the whole weekend, but specifically preaching on Revelation 6:9-11 on Sunday morning. He gave us the following teaser…  Sunday's Sermon is the Triumph of the Witnesses. When Jesus opens the fifth seal, John sees martyrs beneath the altar, crying for vindication. Revelation portrays God's answer to their prayer, following the martyrs as they ascend to heavenly thrones to reign with Christ. I look forward to both attending the Men's Retreat and worshiping with the rest of you this Sunday morning in Newport Beach!  Pastor Adam

This past year we have seen so much grief, pain and horror: bodies floating down the Ganges as Covid rages in India, medical personnel exhausted and dying in their efforts to care for those who have gotten sick, fracture in our social and political culture that threatens to destroy our country, alongside the world's usual quota of war, illness, accident, and danger. Where is God? Why doesn't He DO something?? I have no Pollyanna answer, but I do have evidence that the merciful God of the Bible is neither absent or silent. Kathy Keller currently works on the staff of Redeemer City to City, an organization that assists global church planters to start gospel movements in their countries. There is a difference between the two books of God (God's volume of self-revelations…verse 7 introduces us to Volume Two of God's revelation—“the law of the Lord.” Both volumes glorify God and inspire the worship of thoughtful persons. His Word reveals Him as the One who enters into covenant relationship with His people. God's work reveal His knowledge and power but His Word reveals His love and grace. Scientific truth may stimulate our intellect but spiritual truth convicts our heart and conscience! Public hate as we are seeing today, is not the way of God. Jesus set the example by even washing Judas' feet with the other disciples, knowing that Judas was his enemy…that's how you love your enemy. In my experience, it's easier to "Agape" someone you dislike (or who dislikes you) when you pray for them. Because when you pray for them, God often opens your heart to seeing people the way that God sees them, rather than the way you see them. Your friends will not point out your faults, but your enemies will. Your enemies will help you see what needs to be changed in your life while your friends will overlook your faults. Resource: 1. Today I'd like to share a message by Dr. Tim Keller, which he gave at The Center's Men's Breakfast in November 2019 here in Birmingham, Alabama. Tim's message draws some lessons from the early Church for us today and what we’re facing in our own culture, as the Christian church is declining. Increasingly, you have people out there who not only don’t believe in God or don’t believe in Christianity, but actually think Christianity is bad for people. And say that religion is bad for people. And religious people are a threat to our democracy and a threat to our social order. We’ve never faced anything like that, but the early Christians certainly did. So, then the real question is why did so many people become Christians then in the first three centuries when Christianity was so persecuted? Why would anybody want to become a Christian? Keller ends the talk with a special time of Q and A. I hope you enjoy it! - Richard Tim Keller is the Chairman and co-Founder of Redeemer City to City, which trains pastors for ministry in global cities. He is also the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City and the author of New York Times bestselling books The Reason for God, The Prodigal God, and Prayer.

Religious liberty has emerged as a particularly contentious issue in American public discourse, especially in light of President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court. In today’s episode, Influence magazine executive editor George P. Wood talks to  Brandon J. Unfortunately—even as well-meaning God-fearing parents—our daily lives can often betray what our mouths have claimed concerning God and the biblical Christ. This can fuel the doubts and suspicions in our kids. For many kids today, God just doesn't make sense. Our guest, Timothy Keller is Pastor Emeritus of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. The “Influentials” issue of New York magazine featured Keller as “the most successful Christian evangelist in the city” for his engagement with the young professional and artist demographics. He is the author of such New York Times bestselling books as The Reason for God and The Meaning of Marriage. Keller is also chairman of Redeemer City to City, which has helped start over 380 churches in global cities worldwide. He lives in New York City with his wife Kathy. How Postmodern Thought can Make it Difficult for Teens to Make Sense of God I'm not so sure our kids are walking away from the concept of God as much as they are walking away from the church. I just want to say that I believe there is as much unjustification for our kids abandoning their faith as there is justification. As culpable as the church might be for this, what better alternatives are our kids turning to really? Where is it written that kids have to be exhilarated by every aspect of life, truth, and reality? Not Scripture! I think today's culture—largely through the media, the Internet, movies, TV, music, entertainment in general, public education, today's mental health field and pharmaceutical industry, our government, and yes, even the church—has successfully marginalized God and His Word. Our entire infrastructure today is loaded with hippie-era, postmodern thinkers. If it feels good, do it. Truth is relative. There are no absolutes. My truth is as good as yours. Your truth isn't true for me. I should do whatever I want to do when I want to do it. That's just your opinion mom/dad. Who are you to tell me what to do? Kids are saying these very things to their parents, and too many parents buy it. To postmodern-thinking kids, it all makes sense to them. Children are taking the postmodern thought of their parents and grandparents to it's logical end, and parents are allowing it because they have bought into it. The biblical God—the God who dares to tell exalted humans how to live life—does not make sense to kids. I'm anxious to hear how today's guest can help us help our kids through the process of making sense of God. Timothy Keller and I discuss his book Making Sense of God, our kids and our culture.  We cover the following subjects: What are the dangers of postmodern thinking. Who is Timothy Keller? The importance of teaching vs. mere discipline. Where do teens get their moral basis from. Understanding the dichotomy of kids being moralistic and relativistic at the same time. How to address your teen's cultural perspective on Christianity. Picture provided by: pixnio.com

Guest Info/Bio: This week we crack our echo chamber and speak with pastor and author Dr. Timothy Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York. He speaks with us about the importance of doubt. Doubt is very important. So important that we must even train ourselves to "doubt our doubts". Timothy Keller is the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, which he started in 1989 with his wife, Kathy, and three young sons. For over twenty years he has led a diverse congregation of young professionals that has grown to a weekly attendance of over 5,000. He previously served as the pastor of West Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia, Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, and Director of Mercy Ministries for the Presbyterian Church in America. Recently, Dr. Keller released his latest book “Making Sense of God: An Invitation to the Skeptic” In an earlier book, The Reason for God, the author made a case for Christianity; Making Sense of God starts further back, addressing people who strongly doubt that any version of religion or faith makes sense or has anything of value to offer the contemporary world. In his trademark accessible prose, New York Times best-selling author Timothy Keller invites those who have dismissed Christianity as irrelevant to reconsider. As the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, Dr. Keller has spent decades engaging with skeptics of all persuasions, from the hostile to the hopeful, in personal conversations, sermons, and books, which have sold over two million copies. http://www.timothykeller.com/books/making-sense-of-god Twitter: @timkellernyc Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimKellerNYC Website: www.timothykeller.com Special guest music on this episode provided by: All Sons and Daughters www.allsonsanddaughters.com Instagram: allsonsanddaughters Twitter: @allsanddmusic Facebook:allsonsanddaughters Enjoy the songs?
