Isolated incidents of coerced suicide are distressing to think about but with the growing popularity of social media sites it would seem there may be some people who want to play a deadly game. Sometime in 2013, rumors about a deadly suicide game began making their way across social media sites. VK, a Russian version of Facebook, seemed to be the source of the phenomenon, but like many creepy pastas, the game's true origins are muddy at best. What is well documented is the moral panic that began to spread through Russian tabloids about a game, known to teens as the Blue Whale Challenge, that some sources claimed had been responsible for a vast majority of the 130 suicides that occurred in Russia in 2016.
No matter how much time we spend trying to keep our children safe and out of harm's way they will always be vulnerable. The creature comforts that have come to be embedded in our DNA are too convenient and important to shun due to their relatively sporadic risks. It is simply impossible now to imagine a world that's not at your fingertips. But make no mistake about it, that comes with a cost... Strangers are in your children's bedrooms, phones, and earbuds. Influencing their actions, manipulating their motions, and spreading evil. This week we take a look at some nefarious beings who sought to introduce a bizarre new game that spread like a disease to the youth. One that only ends once they're dead...
On the second episode of season three, the boys take a more unstructured approach as they dive into The Blue Whale Challenge - the horrifying and deadly game that has claimed many young lives. In April 2016, questions began to arise about a rash of teen age suicides in Russia, all coming from a social media group known only as "F57". Rumors began circulating that these deaths, totaling over 130, were attributed to a mysterious game called the "Blue Whale Challenge". The rules were simple. Follow a series of daily tasks ranging from the mundane to bizarre, to include self-mutilation and constant absorption of disturbing media, for 49 consecutive days. On the 50th- commit suicide. Though initially believed to be a hoax, it was soon discovered that there was something indeed evil preying on the children of Russia. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Parents around the world feared their children would fall victim to this latest internet threat. A freakish face, long black hair, and unblinking wide eyes. News stations across the world warned of it. Were they blowing an urban legend out of proportion? Or should parents pay closer attention for fear this creature will target their children next?

The "Momo Challenge" is a hoax and urban legend about a nonexistent social media challenge that was spread on Facebook and other media outlets.[1][2] It was reported that children and adolescents were being enticed by a user named Momo to perform a series of dangerous tasks including violent attacks and suicide.[3][4][5] Despite claims in 2019 that the phenomenon had reached worldwide proportions in July 2018, the number of actual complaints was relatively small and no law enforcement agency has confirmed that anyone was harmed as a direct result of it.[6][7][8][9] Awareness of the alleged challenge rose in February 2019 after the Police Service of Northern Ireland posted a public warning on Facebook.[10] Blue Whale (Russian: Синий кит, translit. Siniy kit), also known as Blue Whale Challenge, is a social network phenomenon dating from 2016 that is claimed to exist in several countries. It is a "game" reportedly consisting of a series of tasks assigned to players by administrators over a 50-day period, initially innocuous before introducing elements of self-harm and the final challenge requiring the player to commit suicide.[1][2] https://fightthenewdrug.org/24-year-old-jailed-choking-teen-death-porn-scene-reenactment/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=february&utm_term=reenactment&fbclid=IwAR0SYp9gocFtrMt1J5gv8FIWewXQIS4p97yV435mwE7HnuEklVPLxILLfh8 https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/shadow-boxing/201710/the-psychologist-and-the-serial-killer https://www.facebook.com/theadamparadox/ https://twitter.com/1AdamParadox https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theadamparadox/support

Hundreds of suicides were linked to the Blue Whale Challenge – but what is the truth behind the claims? The challenge was described as an online game, where participants were given 50 tasks to perform over 50 days. A report in independent Russian news outlet Novaya Gazeta linked the game to 130 teenage suicides, and a 21-year-old man who was arrested in a case related to the challenge pleaded guilty and is currently in a Russian prison. But others are sceptical that the challenge can definitively be blamed for the tragedies. And in a twist, researchers say the game may not have even existed before the initial media reports. So!
Gut Holz, Sisters & Brothers! Subscribe to the podcast. In an increasingly connected world, the public’s demand for quick, concise updates on pressing topics grows more and more every day. Just a decade ago, government agencies did not use social networks to engage with the public. Many platforms did not exist and those that did were used on for social interaction alone. But that has changed. Social networks have become a legitimized form of communication that strengthens connections between public sector entities and the constituents they serve. In fact the social media penetration worldwide is ever-increasing. In 2017, 71 % of internet users were social network users and these figures are expected to grow. SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW THE SHOW ON ITUNES The question is--are we using social media or it is using and abusing us? Has the quality of our lives become enhanced because of social media OR are we overdosing in technology in every aspect of our lives? What is the impact of social media on our humanity and even our existence? Last season on Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Pleasure we talked about the Blue Whale Challenge--it's an online contest/promotion - a dare if you will. THE BLUE WHALE CHALLENGE lays out a series of tasks and steps, it is a daredevil promotion that encourages kids to take their own lives - in a word SUICIDE. Now ask yourself the question--WHEN IS TOO MUCH, TOO MUCH? Co-hosts Dr Faye Wilson and Missy Crutchfield -- who are both sophisticated social media and technology-minded women spin circles around Malcolm in this one.
