 601. Part 1 of our conversation with Cherry Levin about her research into Antebellum weddings in Louisiana Creole plantations. She wrote a dissertation at LSU entitled, “Wedding Belles and Enslaved Brides: Louisiana Plantation Weddings in Fact, Fiction and Folklore.” “Along with rites of passage marking birth and death, wedding rituals played an important role in ordering social life on antebellum Louisiana plantations, not only for elite white families but also for the enslaved. Autobiographical accounts of plantation weddings written by Louisiana women yield considerable insights on the importance of weddings for Louisiana plantation women before and especially during the Civil War. Moreover, information contained within the Louisiana Writers' Project narratives reveal various types of wedding ritual used to unite the enslaved on Louisiana plantations despite laws and codes that prohibited slave unions. In contrast to these historical accounts, plantation weddings in the fictional imagination reveal that the figure of the bride reflects careful authorial negotiation of racialized and gendered ideologies.” (Levin).  “A distinguished graduate of the Association of Bridal Consultants' Professional Development Program, Cherry has planned and coordinated over two hundred weddings throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, the Wine Country and Lake Tahoe. She has also planned weddings in San Luis Obispo, Texas and locations throughout southeastern Louisiana from Baton Rouge to New Orleans” (Retrospect Images). 310 - October Profit Report

Unf*ck Your Biz With Braden

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 9, 2023 17:20

On today's episode of the podcast I'm sharing my October profit report and upcoming November goals. To kick off my profit reports I recap my goals for the year which, if you've been listening since the beginning of the year, you know sometimes pivot as the year goes on but as I read them each month, it makes me think how I can come up with more aligned goals in 2024. Big goals for 2023 1. Consistent $20,000 months by Q4. We've done really well with this one, we've hit it a lot more than I thought we would. We've had a few dips, like January, July and September. In October we ended up with $19,800 which I'm going to round up and consider a win. 2. Get MRR to $20,000 by end of year. Kind of through this one away mid-year when we pivoted some offers away from MRR in favor of some new programs we're running. 3. Get expenses under 35%. → Year-to-date we're at 43%. I've made the new goal 40% which I think is still a stretch because we had really high expenses in the month of October and would require Nov. and Dec. to be pretty lean which we could maybe do because a lot of Wedding MBA in November has been pre-paid and should make the money at the event this month which caused inflated expenses in previous months. What Happened in October Affiliate Contest - We had high hopes for this because we told our partners about it two months in advance and expected to double our affiliate payouts in October with low ticket offers but that did not end up gaining traction. Prepping for big launch - Happening end of November, early December Prepping for Wedding MBA ABC - I was in Puerto Rico for the Association of Bridal Consultants conference October Projections vs. Actual Low Ticket: $3,000 (big goal, closer to $1,500 to $2,000 if people don't get in on the affiliate push) → 1,300 UYB: $1,200 → $800 PRx: $4,000 → $3,800 Legal: $8,000 (3ish trademarks and a couple LLCs) → $2,700 Tax Filing: $2,500 → $6,000 Consults: $0 → $1,000 Total: $18,700 → $19,800 Expenses Team contractors: $305 (includes copywriting and VA work) Employee wages: $2,700 ($1,000 up from last month) One-off contractor: $1,500 (This was the second of two installments so I can finally tell you this was for an AI tool for the Contract Club that allows you to answer a series of ~10 questions and then auto-generate you a client contract made for you) Owner wages: $2,900 Tax: $2,500 Monthly tools: $430 Marketing expenses: $1,500 (a lot of stuff to take to Wedding MBA) Other: $3,000 (includes a few auto-billing issue refunds, Vegas hotels and affiliate payouts) Profit Total revenue: $19,800 Expenses: $10,800 (over 50% of revenue so very high for us) Profit: $9,000 Owner salary: $5,300 Business profit: $3,500 November projections Low ticket sales: $6,000 (we'll be selling at our Wedding MBA booth) Unf*ck Yor Biz: $3,800 (contingent on us pre-selling a few folks at Wedding MBA) Profit Rx: $4,000 Legal services: $4,000 Tax services: $4,000 Consultations: $0 Total: $21,800 Our launch revenue should technically hit in December. Our good, better best goals for 2023 are: Good: $200k, Better: $250k, Best: $300k. If we hit this November revenue goal we'll only need $14.8k in December which should be pretty easy because that would make it our second lowest revenue month of the year and I'm projecting it to be our highest. 301 - August Profit Report

Unf*ck Your Biz With Braden

On today's episode of the podcast I'm sharing my August 2023 profit report. I do these every month to show an example of how you can go about budgeting and understanding your numbers while also giving a real life example of how much it costs to run a business. It is important to note that my business is not indicative of every kind of business. Whether you do or don't have a team and depending on how much you do or do not work, how many ads you run, if you have a product or service based business, those are all factors that impact how much it costs to run your business. Let's start by recapping my 2023 goals: 1. Consistent $20,000 months by Q3. We're ahead of schedule! We hit it this month so we are at 6 out of 8 months so far this year. Yay! 2. Get MRR to $20,000 by end of year. It wasn't necessarily a realistic goal to begin with, more to strive towards that. Definitely not going to happen this year, especially based on ways we've restructured programs and payment plans. It's probably going to replace goal #1 in 2024. 3. Get expenses under 35%. YTD, I'm at like 41%. Got some work to do. It's crept up a bit more with some big expenses. Probably going to have to pivot to a 40% goal Here's what happened in August Delivered first batch of Trademark Quickies and onboarded new clients Started Fall cohort of Unf*ck Your Biz Ran an affiliate contest August projected vs. actual revenue Low Ticket - $3,000 → $2,200 $1,000 more than last month But far less affiliate sales than expected. Need to give more notice and we had some link issues. $1,600 from Contract Club UYB - $8,000 → $1,350 (way off) Some lessons learned here. Was hopeful I could maybe do 4 launches a year, but I'm probably going to need to scale it back to 2. The program works best for everyone with at least 15 students. Ideally 20-30. PRx - $5,000 → $4,600 Our alumni program for Unf*ck Your Biz, we already have about 50 members. Tax Stuff - $1,000 → $4,000 Apparently, I haven't really paid attention to how much MRR we have here because we have at least $3,000 from monthly bookkeeping clients and we have pretty good retention. Legal Stuff - $7,000 → $11,600 $9,000 of this was Trademarks. About spot on, but we did 5 marks for one client Consults - $0 → $0 Total: $24,150 → $25,129 Expenses Total → $13.000 (my highest month of the year so far) Team contractors - $865 Employee wages - $2,600 (Pretty standard. This does not include my wages) Outside contractor expenses - $1,500 This was the first of two $1,500 installments for a project I hired a contractor to do. Not ready yet to disclose this project. Owner wages - $2,900 (what I pay myself) Owner tax - $2,500 (goes to the IRS) Monthly tools - $850 (I paid a $300 annual expense which arguably shouldn't go in monthly tools) Insurance: $45 for now (will be going up soon) Marketing - $500 Meals - $48 Online programs - $453 Client fees - $2,500 (These are the trademark filing fees. I bake this into the price of my trademark services flat fee the client pays and then I pay the fee) Other expenses: $3,200 (These were travel expenses. I am flying to Puerto Rico at the end of October through beginning of November to speak at the Association of Bridal Consultants conference and then the week after that I'm going to Wedding MBA and am covering the flights for two of my team members who are also coming). Affiliate payouts - $368 Expenses were 52% of revenue went to expenses this month so a profit of 48% so 8% higher than where I'd like it to be but really I'd like it to be at 35%, not 40%. Upcoming Expenses Another $1500 to contractor $1500 to Vegas hotels and flights $1000ish in swag orders for Wedding MBA Upcoming Projects Doing a big affiliate push in October (meaning a higher projection of low ticket sales in October over September) A potential exciting update with the Contract Club to make it even better, which also means a big expense Working on Profit Rx My projected revenue for September Low Ticket: $1,500 UYB: $1,400 PRx: $4,000 Legal: $8,600 (6 trademarks) Tax: $3,000 Consults: $0 Total: $18,500 Want to see my actual books (and maybe even watch me update it live) for free? Have you ever stopped to think about how your language can affect your business? As industry professionals, entrepreneurs, and business owners, our brains are ingrained with a type of language that's often apologetic, limited, and minimizing when it comes to our titles and abilities. When we consider the way that talks about the role we play in our business, ‘wedding planner' or ‘photographer' are used in place of ‘CEO' or ‘owner'. You may even find yourself overusing the word ‘sorry' in your everyday communication, or even creating excuses for situations that don't warrant them. Join Renee Dalo as she discusses taking back the power of confidence in your language, and how you can change the trajectory of your career by doing so. About Illinois Events Coalition: The Illinois Events Coalition was founded by Ali Phillips of Engaging Events by Ali, Collin Pierson of Collin Pierson Photography, and Michelle Durpetti of Michelle Durpetti events. They are supported by over 200 businesses who employ hundreds of dedicated, career event professionals. Their coalition represents the thousands of wedding and event businesses located throughout the city of Chicago and Illinois who have been severely affected by the necessary public health mandates impacting businesses during this pandemic. They are a diverse collection of creatives that include women, minorities, and LGBT business owners, dedicated to providing services to our fellow citizens. The special events industry responsible for producing the City's weddings, galas and corporate events is, at its core, a constellation of small businesses. Though these small businesses produce vast amounts of revenue for the City, we do so without the collective resources of many of our partner service industries, like hotels, which benefit from larger government relations budgets. Get to know our guests: Ali Phillips is the Chief Wedding Orchestrator of Engaging Events by Ali, Inc and is truly a leader in the wedding industry. She has been named one of the Top Chicago Wedding Planners in the Chicago Magazine and was selected by the Editor of Brides Magazine as one of Chicago’s favorite wedding planners. She has also been named Best Wedding Consultant in Chicago by The Knot Magazine multiple times. Ali Phillips is also one of the founding members of the Illinois Events Coalition. Ali Phillips serves a board member of WIPA and is a certified Professional Bridal Consultant™ with the Association of Bridal Consultants. She a dedicated self-starter who is goal-oriented, has a professional and positive attitude, and takes a proactive approach to everything she does. You can find Ali in her free time on her boat on Lake Michigan, cycling at Soul Cycle and traveling the world in search of the perfect sunset. Michelle Durpetti earned the title “One of the Country’s Top 50 Planners in 2018, was named “Woman of Style” in 2017, was selected as a “Bride’s Choice” winner on Wedding Wire in 2013, and “Best of” wedding planner by The Knot in 2014. Since the inception of Michelle Durpetti Events in 2008, Michelle has planned and produced over 350 weddings and events including some of Chicago’s most notable, celeb-studded events. At almost the 12 year marker with MDE, Michelle still loves designing events and working closely with couples to help bring their unique and ideal wedding vision to life. She balances her time between MDE and being a managing partner in her family’s business here in Chicago while also being a competitive amateur equestrian and volunteering her time with various charitable organizations. Colin Pierson is an international-award winning wedding bridal fashion & editorial photographer and educator based in Chicago, Illinois. Combining his unique past in photojournalism, sports, and fashion photography, he created a style that is both candid and dramatic. If you live in a large market, there likely is an event industry or wedding industry networking group that you can be a part of, from NACE and ILEA to WIPA and ABC. But for those in a smaller market or for professionals that looking to network with a subset of your colleagues, there might not be a group that's perfect for you. Maybe you should be the one to start it! In this week's episode of the This Week In Weddings podcast, we're chatting about wedding planner Michelle Garibay who started a networking group in her local market. She's sharing some tips on how she did it, why she did it, and some tips for someone who may want to start a networking group of their own. About our guest: Michelle Garibay Events launched in 2006 on the island of Oahu after her husband was temporarily transferred there.  With political and corporate event experience under her belt in San Diego and then the move to Hawaii, Michelle made the transition to weddings and quickly realized that was where she was supposed to be. After returning to Southern California in 2011, Temecula became home for Michelle’s family and company. Relocating again meant that she would need to rebuild her company again, so she has built her company from the ground up not once but twice.  Both times, networking and building solid relationships played a huge role in the growth and trajectory of her business.  Her efforts to challenge the status quo and redefine the perception of what it means to get married in Temecula continues to help grow the area’s recognition as a sought-after wedding destination. She’s not interested in just helping her business succeed, but wants the entire market to shine, too. She has won various design awards, been featured in numerous print and online publications and in 2017 Michelle was named a top 50 wedding planner in California.  Michelle is a speaker and an educator, has taught a wedding planning certification course at the University of La Verne, and was named a Wedding Pro Educator by The Knot Worldwide in 2019, continuing for 2020. She is also the incoming Director of Education for the Southern California chapter of Wedding International Professionals Association for 2020,  a member of the Palm Springs NACE chapter, and is involved with the Inland Empire and Orange County chapters of the Association of Bridal Consultants. Continuing education and building meaningful connections are cornerstones to her company’s success. Going into her 14th year of business, Michelle Garibay Events specializes in destination weddings and serves all of Southern California, Hawaii, Mexico and beyond. When Michelle isn’t planning weddings, she enjoys all that Temecula has to offer with her husband, two children, Madison and Carson, and their two rescue dogs. In this episode, listeners will hear about: Michelle's background and how she got started in the wedding industry The national networking groups that Michelle is a part of and how she noticed a hole in her local market for something different The organic way that the networking group began The guidelines that Michelle and the core group who started the networking group came up with in order to keep the group's members at the same level How the financial aspects of the networking group work Want to connect with Michelle? Wedding planners are a great source of wedding referrals and can be a perfect conduit to repeat business. But how do you get on a wedding planner's preferred list? And even more importantly, how do you stay on that list? In this week's episode of This Week In Weddings, we're chatting with a seasoned wedding planner about that things to do to make yourself stand out in a planner's eyes. And, of course, Kimberly can't help but add her own two cents about the topic as well! About our guest: Saundra is the owner of planning forever events, an event planning business based in Evansville, Indiana. For the last 16 years, she is known to create weddings and celebrations that become treasured memories forever, usually, with large liquor and bar tabs. She entered the event planning world with many years of business experience under her cap; such as, corporate event planning for doctors and selling advertising/media campaigns to all ranges of businesses. Real-world business experience, managing expectations, budgeting, marketing, and strong sales skills, has helped her maintain her longevity.  Saundra never dreamed of being a wedding planner. Instead, she fell into this crazy event world through luck and has stuck it out through grit and creating collaboration with other wedding professionals to produce outstanding events. Ten years ago, Saundra was invited to speak at an intimate event planning conference. With her extensive background in sales training from her advertising job and a passion for the subject of selling to clients, Saundra developed the Get Real Sales Coach seminars to teach other industry professionals “How to Close the Deal”.  She has brought her no-nonsense, straight-forward delivery to stages across the country, including Australia, at conferences such as the Association of Bridal Consultants, The Special Event, NACE, privately funded conferences, and her own workshops. Currently, she has elected to pull back from speaking engagements and applauds her friends and peers that are on the speaking circuit. Saundra could go on and on about her published articles, but really, she knows no one really cares. She is, however, proud that for the past 13 years, she has worked for a local ABC morning lifestyle show, producing and delivering wedding content for live TV and co-anchoring special events such as the Royal Wedding. In this episode, listeners will hear about: Saundra's experience in the wedding industry How to best reach out to a wedding planner for the first time (and what not to do) What will get you on a wedding planner's shit list Tips for working with planners and their clients Want to connect with Saundra? Cheryl has impacted the lives of thousands of women through her life-changing principles of FEARLESS living. She is an award-winning entrepreneur, speaker, author, and business coach who specializes in equipping women to stretch their thinking, expand their expectations, and play bigger. Her message of empowerment has been spotlighted on Fox 5 News, News Channel 8, Radio One, WPGC, WHUR, My Spirit DC, Afro-American Newspaper, and more. Cheryl inspires women to embrace their personal power to visualize, strategize, and execute in order to achieve their life, career, or business goals. Her sheer enthusiasm for achieving what others deem “impossible” is contagious and sparks a flame among her audiences to step outside of their comfort zone, take risks, and remove self-limiting beliefs to become the best version of themselves. Cheryl’s personal story is one of determination and resilience. In her journey, she repeatedly demonstrates the power of nurturing your possibilities and immobilizing fear. Raised as one of three children in a single-parent household in low-income housing in Baltimore, Maryland, Cheryl witnessed poverty and crime on a daily basis. However, from a young age she developed an “internal conviction” that she would not become a product of her environment, but rather she would implement the life skills her mother instilled in her – hard work, integrity, loyalty, drive, and passion – to create a different reality for herself. Immediately after graduating high school, Cheryl jumped into the work force and quickly landed a number of senior administrative positions in Corporate America. For nearly 20 years, she built a career that would have seemed “comfortable” for most. But, it wasn’t enough for Cheryl. Once she married and became a mother of three, her spirit yearned for more. Cheryl fell into a space of being frustrated and unfulfilled in life with a desire to do more, become more, and set an example for her children that it is never too late to pursue your dreams. She ditched the idea of just dreaming about her aspirations and, instead, began to pursue them without thoughts of ever turning back. The results are still astounding to most. In a five year period, Cheryl started a mommy t-shirt business, walked away from her Corporate job, and built an international speaking and coaching business. She made the decision to walk in her greatness without apologies or regrets to become a mission-driven entrepreneur living in her purpose. Cheryl authentically shares the ups and downs of her journey and inspires women to persevere until they reach their goals even in the face of challenges, setbacks, fears and doubts. Cheryl has authored three books, How I Flatlined and Woke Up in 45 Days – A Guide to Empowered Living; The GlamourLESS Side of Entrepreneurship – What They DIDN’T Tell You About Being A Woman In Business; and The Power to Sizzle – Transformational Power Thoughts for Creating The Life You Want. She is a contributing writer for WISE Magazine, Enterprising Women Magazine, and FAHARI Magazine. Cheryl has received numerous awards and recognition for her work including 2014 Success In Stilettos Award; 2013 Willie Jolley Motivational Speaker Award; 2013 Who’s Who In Black Washington, DC; 2013 Who’s Who in Prince George’s County; 2013 Woman of Possibilities Award; 2012 Forty Under Forty Honoree; 2012 Inspirational Entrepreneur of the Year Award; 2011 Small Business Influencer Award; 2010 Business Woman of the Year Award; 2010 Entrepreneurial Spirit Award; and 2010 Governor’s Citation for Excellence in Small Business.
