Welcome to Peri Menopause Power, where we dive deep into the transformative journey of perimenopause and midlife. In this episode, we're speaking with Andrea Clark, a highly experienced trichologist, stylist, and hair consultant with over 30 years in the hair industry. Splitting her time between Melbourne and Hong Kong, Andrea offers her expertise to salons in both cities and provides individual consultations to clients globally via Zoom. Her passion lies in helping clients overcome challenges like hair thinning, hair loss, and scalp conditions, as well as restoring hair's overall health and condition. Andrea began her career as a stylist in Melbourne, before moving to Hong Kong in 2007 to join the prestigious Mandarin Salon at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. She advanced to senior stylist, then salon manager and artistic director, specialising in colour and cutting. Motivated by the common scalp and hair issues faced by her high-stress, time-poor clientele - and inspired by a meeting with the renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley - Andrea pursued certification in trichology with the International Association of Trichologists. This training has enabled her to combine science-based solutions with her stylistic expertise to provide comprehensive care for hair and scalp health. Michael Romei has been dubbed "The Ambassador of Hospitality" and he practices his brand of statecraft on both a local and global level. In this podcast, Michael invites our listeners to retrace his brilliant career as a Les Clefs d'Or concierge, and in particular, his time as the former Chef Concierge of the Waldorf Towers/Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.Michael walks us through the kinds of duties performed by a Chief Concierge and relates some anecdotes with the diplomacy and discretion that is expected of someone with his experience and position.  He also tells our listeners what it takes to be a great Concierge and how the position has evolved and changed over the years. Finally, Michael tells us more about Les Clefs d'Or and his personal dedication to this prestigious association.Michael Romei is currently the Chef Concierge at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City and is frequent guest speaker, lecturer and trainer in the hospitality industry.  Presidents, heads of state, celebrities, and tourists from around the world have sought out Michael Romei with requests that run the gamut from getting hot tickets to a sold-out show to staging an elaborate marriage proposal. You can often find him in his hotel lobby speaking Italian on the phone, chatting with guests in Spanish and making dinner reservations in French. Michael Romei is the insider's insider, knowing where to go and what to do in the far-flung corners of the world. Romei's frequent guests have often boasted that their favorite concierge in New York has set up a complete European vacation for them! In today's competitive luxury hotel market, that is an edge, indeed! Michael Romei is the former General Secretary of the prestigious international organization Les Clefs d'Or and served on their International Executive Committee for 10 years. Les Clefs d'Or boasts approximately 4000 members working in 80 destinations most of whom have undergone rigorous training in the concierge profession, a lot of that training done by Romei himself. He has logged tens of thousands of miles each year conducting training sessions and seminars all around the world. Romei teaches the art of hospitality to all levels of hotel staff; from General Managers, to bellhops, to housekeepers, and of course, the concierges. Perhaps the GM of the Movenpick Hotel in Bangalore, India said it best, after one of Romei's training sessions: "The concierge is the face of the hotel. So, it is vitally important to have an excellent and well-trained concierge team." Romei has a BA from Manhattanville College, Graduates Studies degree in International Business from NYU, a former faculty member of NYU's Continuing Education Hospitality Program.  Romei is founder of the “Creating Service Magic” Concierge-Customer Service Training Seminar.  He served 24 years as the Chef Concierge of The Waldorf Astoria and Waldorf Towers, prior to which he served 5 years as the Chef Concierge of the Boca Raton Resort & Club. April 1, 2023 is the 20th anniversary of the Asian pop icon's death. Synopsis: Can I Tell You Something Crazy is a new scripted series under the #PopVultures banner, which examines with fresh eyes, events that shook Asian media and entertainment.  On April 1, 2003, the world was shocked by the loss of one of the most beloved, enduring and seductive stars to ever grace screens. Singer and actor Leslie Cheung died by suicide at the age of 46, leaping to his death from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong, after succumbing to a battle with severe depression. 2003 was a dark year for Hong Kong. The Sars epidemic ravaged the city. Yet, Cheung's death ignited a wave of public grieving, with people lining the streets outside his memorial to mourn him. The singer-actor was beloved and known for his androgynous style onstage and his acclaimed performances in films like Days Of Being Wild (1990), Farewell My Concubine (1993) and Happy Together (1997) onscreen. Off screen, his personal life, especially his sexuality, was highly scrutinised.  Host Jan Lee celebrates Cheung's life on the 20th anniversary of his death. She looks at the star's legacy as a queer icon - both in his pop music and his film roles - and how his tragic end highlighted the stigma around mental health and his own sexual orientation. According to authorities, a retired police officer shot by his wife last week faces more than a dozen criminal charges alleging he sexually abused children at her day care center. In a luxury hotel in Washington, D.C., Shanteari Weems shot her husband over allegations he molested children under her care, police said. Baltimore County Police said Tuesday that James Weems Jr., 57, was charged with sexually abusing three children while working at a day care facility. Currently, he is in the Washington, D.C., hospital being treated for a gunshot wound and awaiting extradition to Maryland. Among the charges against Weems are assault, sexual abuse of a minor, and displaying obscene material to a minor. After a standoff with police at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Shanteari Weems was arrested Thursday. According to authorities, she told an officer at the hotel room's door, "F**k him, he's a child molester." Police have charged her with assault with intent to kill and assault with a dangerous weapon. Friday is the date of her preliminary hearing. According to the Baltimore Sun, her lawyer Joseph Fay and his co-counsel, Tony Garcia, are "looking forward to providing Ms. Weems with a vigorous defense." It is his hope that the court will consider that she has never hurt anyone in her life, and that she has dedicated herself to other people's children for the sake of their livelihoods. Garcia and the couple met at the hotel to discuss the child abuse allegations. During the argument, the woman fired her gun after her husband stood up and started "going towards" her, according to the attorney. "I think this woman was torn apart by guilt - that this was her own husband - and by fear when he attacked her," Garcia said. “She's just in this swamp of fear and guilt at this moment. It was very clear that she did not want him to molest another child. "It doesn't matter how trying the circumstances, how challenging the environment, how difficult the task. Ultimately, strength is shown through calm"James Riley is the Chief Executive of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. He joined the Board as Group CEO in 2016 and has held a number of senior executive positions within the Jardine Matheson Group. He was Group Finance Director of Jardines from 2005 to 2016, and was a non-executive director of HSBC from 2012 to 2016. He is also the Chairman of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Geographical Society. Despite being the CEO of one of the world’s most loved luxury hotel brands, you will find very little out there online about his professional or personal life. Therefore, I am honoured to be the one to bring this conversation into the world and am grateful for his trust in me to do so. I hope that the hundreds of thousands of Jardines employees around the world, who have worked alongside James over the years, both recognise the man on the mic, and also learn something new about a man whose energy, zest for life, and company, I find very enjoyable. We ease into this conversation on common ground and our shared love of books, discussing his favourites and the one that moved him to tears. We then pick up steam and he speaks candidly about how he copes as CEO of a huge organisation despite recently losing his sight. We chat about his people-centric leadership philosophy, and why he’s stayed with one group for so long. We also discuss living with no regrets, the importance of luck in one’s career, what makes him most uncomfortable, and his excitement around the ambitious drive to totally eliminate single-use plastics at Mandarin Oriental by 2021. We end with him revealing how watching a loved one suffer, ultimately shaped his career ambitions and determination to succeed. Ire Evans is the Chef / Owner of Green Cuisine Personal Chef Service in Denver, Colorado. She recounts being told she could not enter a culinary program because...she was too short. That fueled her fire as Ire is a self-proclaimed rebel and from her youth to today, she is surrounded by strong women. She gives us insights into some of the iconic dishes of Indonesian cuisine, such as Satay, Rendang and Nasi Goreng. We chat with one of her #UnsungHospitalityHeroes, Maggie Kates, who teases us with what it takes to be a Chef in Antarctica. Website - greencuisinechef.com Where are you from originally? Jakarta, Indonesia First job in the industry? Waitress, in 1983, at the Mandarin Oriental in Jakarta, Indonesia at 19 years old. Proudest moment of your career? When I was voted as a Top 15 personal chef in Denver. Two things most people don't know about you? I used to sing in a vocal group in high school and I used to be a gymnast. Food and/or drinks staples in your house? Rice, tofu and chili sauce. Words to live by? “Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.” - Bruce Lee My name is Ire Evans and I am a personal chef as well as the owner of Green Cuisine Personal Chef Service. My love of cooking flourished at the age of eight when my grandmother and I would spend time together cooking for our family. Because of this, the act of cooking has always felt connected to sentiments of love, family, and community. I decided to pursue my passion in the hospitality industry by moving from Indonesia to Denver to seek a degree in hotel management. I worked at the Marriott in Denver as well as the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Jakarta, a diamond star hotel. My culinary dreams were temporarily put on hold when my children were born since I elected to stay at home and take care of them. When my children were old enough, I decided to pursue my personal chef certification from the Culinary Business Academy and start my own business. I always preferred to work behind the scenes. Owning my own business allowed me to build my vision of a service which prioritizes delicious, healthy, and fresh food that nourishes the body and soul. My Indonesian background coupled with my experiences in the restaurant business in the United States inspired me to offer a culturally diverse portfolio of dishes. I am versatile and able to adjust my services for a wide variety of diets and preferences. My experience as a mother of two wonderful children motivates me to create food that is fun and enjoyable for the whole family! I am an avid member of the United States Personal Chef Association. I have dedicated my career to promoting the importance of healthy and fresh food for our children. I was highly involved in the creation of the school garden at the Challenge School, and have spent ample time teaching healthy cooking to kids in many Colorado schools. My efforts in this arena earned me the Winning Parent Hero Award from Action for Healthy Kids Colorado.

Download now I took breakfast at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel with Josh Steimle. He was giving a breakfast talk to C-Suite professionals at Asia Insight Circle. Actually, I'd invited Josh. I knew a network of business leaders who might find him interesting. Man was I right! Josh is a coach to business leaders on how to manage and grow their profiles on LinkedIn. Look him up - he's in a lot of places. He teaches influence. And he is an influencer.   Hi, I'm Josh! Author of Chief Marketing Officers at Work and 300+ articles in Forbes, Fortune, Time, Mashable, TechCrunch, and more, TEDx speaker, event organizer, and executive coach (I help executives with personal branding and thought leadership) While he's an expert on the deeper engagement possible through well-managed accounts, he kindly dialed back and provided us with some basics. Photo (professional, mid-close range, natural) is easiest. Next is swapping the job title (Vice President, Procurement) to a summary of your expertise (International supply chain & logistics professional with four years in-market experience in Asia). Make sure the text "above the More" is pithy and well-written. (Find a business page sub-editor to teach you snappy sub-head writing!) Next we saw Josh 2.0. There are ways to curate your audience - and write for their (not-so-eclectic) tastes. How to manage incoming requests, and how much time to devote to the platform. But next we talked about LinkedIn as part of a corporate reputation program. So tune in. And whether you're a captain of industry or a novice sailor, there're words of wisdom in today's podcast.   PS: I find this interesting. On his LinkedIn page Josh tells us he's Mormon. And I like that. I'm not seeking religious instruction, but I like when people have that strong a self-identity. I identify with pride and belief. The Latter Day Saints are a naturally an evangelical religion, Josh explained. Plus it focuses his prism. I should have asked - how have your experiences and convictions spread into your influence style?

Ep008: Dr. Jordan Shlain on Being a Philosopher in Search of a Question

On this episode, Dr.G is joined by the highly sought after doctor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, activist, and philosopher, Dr. Jordan Shlain. As a purveyor of subtleties in health, Dr. Shlain challenges our preconceptions of health and medicine and provides a provocative perspective on how we can overcome the biggest challenges that face our industry. Dr. Shlain shares his personal story of how he built one of the most successful concierge medical practices on the backs of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel – where he learned how to deliver a five start customer experience for his patients. He takes us behind the scenes of how his patients helped inspire him to build his digital health venture, Healthloop; and why he believes we need a new voice in healthcare through his latest media venture, Tincture. Taking us back to his early childhood, Dr. Shlain shares never-before-told stories that have influenced his thinking over the years. Simply stated, he takes us on intellectual journey that will blow your mind. All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Dr. Jordan Shlain Dr. Jordan Shlain is an activist and philosopher in the field of health and medicine. He is the founder and chairman of Healthloop, a digital health venture that automates follow-up care and tracks patient progress, as well as the founding editor of Tincture, an online publication of open-source thoughtwear for leaders in health and wellness. Dr. Shlain provides a provocative perspective regarding how we might overcome the biggest challenges we face in health care. Dr. Shlain founded Private Medical, a successful concierge medical practice. Initially partnering with the Mandarin Hotel, he created an empathy-driven approach to his patients modeled after the hospitality industry. Dr. Shlain works to promote that commitment to five-star service and revolutionize the way we do medicine. Key Interview Takeaways Medicine, at its core, is a conversation between a doctor and a patient to solve a problem. Dr. Shlain contends that the empathetic expert, be it a doctor or nurse, should ask not only, “What’s the matter with you?” but also, “What matters to you?” Through this dialogue, the two can work together to craft a workable treatment plan. To be meaningful, technology needs to offer the user preferences and be contextual, relevant, actionable and shareable. Dr. Shlain created Healthloop with these principles in mind to follow up with patients, collect data, and deliver bite-sized information at appropriate times during recovery. In the Healthloop system, the doctor’s office calls the patient when a concern surfaces, and the inbound phone call volume to medical practices is reduced by 70%. “Change always starts with a small group of people banging a drum.” Dr. Shlain maintains that our health care system requires a systematic change initiated by courageous leaders who are willing to take risks. To that end, he started the online publication Tincture in an effort to get the right conversation going via a platform in which we can “allow ourselves the uncomfortable luxury of changing our mind.” We must recraft the language of medicine to remove the jargon. Dr. Shlain argues that it is important to call things what they really are, rather than masking the human suffering at the heart of generic terms like “readmission rate” and “consumer friendly.” The consumer mindset is one of excitement, an exercise of free will to buy products or services that will add to their lives. Meanwhile, a patient’s mindset is one of anxiousness as they choose from limited options to get their lives back. Karen Diggs is a Certified Nutrition Consultant & Therapeutic Chef and inventor of the Kraut Source. After graduating from the California Culinary Academy, Karen got on a jet and flew off to Hong Kong.  There, she worked as a chef for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and also helped to open two eateries in that magnificent city of 7 million people (crowded into 426 square miles). In 2004, while washing dishes in her kitchen, Karen had an epiphany!  The epiphany went something  like this: “Wow, maybe it’s good to combine cooking with nutrition?!”  After all, didn’t someone from long ago say ” Let food by thy medicine and medicine by thy food”?  (It was Hippocrates who said that, by the way.) So, Karen went back to school and obtained her certification as a Nutrition Consultant in 2006 from Bauman College. Now, Karen merges her deep and innate culinary skills with her knowledge of holistic nutrition to help individuals achieve optimal health through detoxification and weight loss workshops, therapeutic cooking classes, and private nutrition consultations. Dr. Jordan Shlain is practicing primary care doctor who questions everything. Jordan share his entrepreneurial journey, innovative approach to healthcare delivery, and his passion for the atomic unit of healthcare - the doctor and patient relationship. The ModernMD: Dr. Jordan Shlain Dr. Jordan Shlain is a nationally recognized physician for his innovative approach to the delivery of healthcare. Jordan is the Founder and Chairman of Healthloop, a cloud-based platform that automates follow-up care; keeping doctors, patients and care-givers connected between visits with clinical information that is insightful, actionable, and engaging. Dr. Shlain was appointed commissioner by the Mayor to the SF Health Service System Board and sits on the Board of Hope Street Group, a bi-partisan Washington, DC policy think tank. He was named one of the top healthcare innovators by HealthSpottr. Jordan is a frequent speaker at various conferences; Health 2.0, RockHealth, Economist Big Ideas, Futuremed and UC Berkeley's Pre-Med 101, and consults with the investor community as a due diligence expert. Success Quotes: “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” - John Muir  “The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.” - Voltaire “It's very difficult to find a black cat in a dark room, especially when there is no cat.” -  Ignorance: How it Drives Science by Stuart Firestein  White Coat to Business Suit: After finishing his training in 1997, Jordan joined a private practice in San Francisco with the promise of taking of the practice in a year. Jordan's deal to take over the practice fell though at the end of the year. He decided to take a walk home that would change his direction as he made an unexpected stop at Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Listen as Dr. Shlain share this life altering experience as he learns the art of five star patient care from the hotel concierge and the story of how he accidentally started HealthLoop.  Idea to Venture: The Idea: How do you digitally enable a five star experience for patients while decreasing the burden of routine processes in a doctors office? Listen to the big vision of Healthloop to improve the patient experience and unburden the doctor from the mundane. Failures: Started with a spreadsheet, a single question, and daily patient phone for real-time tracking. Jordan decided to scale this initial experiment and design a software product that would proactively and asynchronously reach out to his patients. Success: HealthLoop honors the physicians life and respects the patient's journey through their illness. It provides a voice to happy patients and benchmarks physician performance.  Lesson Learned: How do you know what is happening with your patients now? Predictive analytics and claims based big data fail to tell you what is happening. The big opportunity for intervention is the present.  Business Rounds: Best Advice: Take some time off and go see the world. Daily Success Habits: In the morning, Jordan learns two new things that he will keep forever. At the end of each day, he spends five minutes reflecting on his day and what he failed at. Healthcare Trends: Healthcare is moving from a world of interventions to a world of advocacy. It won't just be about what is the matter with you, but what matters to you. Below are some highlights. Access: Large focus has been on healthcare access with the creation of telemedicine, minute clinics, and video visits. Genetics/Personalized Medicine: We are far away from applying this in meaningful way. Exciting opportunities exist with genetic markers and drug therapy. Medical Board Certification/Medical Training: Technology will change medical school training and process for board certification. Artificial Intelligence/Algorithms: Humans can't scale and algorithms can have empathy. There will always be a role for the healing arts. Links:

OTC is the popular Brickell restaurant known for its extensive craft beer selection, artisanal American eats, and ever-popular brunch. Chat Chow TV sat down with owner Michael Sullivan to find out more about the restaurant, its new and improved menu and it’s take-away growler beer program. Sullivan got his start in the restaurant industry in New York City, working his way up through some of the city’s most popular spots. Being from Miami, Sullivan returned to his hometown with a desire to bring what he saw and experienced in the NYC dining scene to South Florida and that’s when OTC was born. OTC opened up originally as a fast casual concept but changed to table service restaurant in late 2013 so it could fully educate diners on the menu without being rushed. With a new way of serving diners also came a new chef, Jacob Anaya formerly of Azul at the neighboring Mandarin Oriental Hotel, who brought his high-end cooking techniques to the casual menu. “He brings the same mentality and focus,” notes Sullivan. “Just with a playful neighborhood vibe.” Everything on Anaya’s revamped menu is homemade, right down even to the mayonnaise and pastas. He also added a new healthy lunch menu filled with dishes like Tuna Poke and Grilled Chicken with Quinoa. Utilizing its extensive craft beer selection, seven varieties on draft and seven by the bottle at any given time, OTC recently introduced its to-go growlers. For just $10, guests can get a growler filled with a beer of their choice to then enjoy at home — giving them access to brews typically reserved for restaurant and bar consumption. Curious what Sullivan’s favorite dish is on the OTC menu? Or what makes the restaurant’s brunch so popular? Get all the details in the video up top.
