On 29 August 1949 at 7:00 a.m. the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb. The test stunned the Western powers. American intelligence had estimated that the Soviets would not produce an atomic weapon until 1953, while the British did not expect it until 1954. The speed at which the Soviet Union developed their bomb was due a network of spies from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada who gave the Soviet Union the necessary information to develop an atomic bomb They were motivated by a range of factors. Some, such as ideology or a belief in communism, were committed to advancing the interests of the Soviet Union. Others were motivated by financial gain, while some may have been coerced or blackmailed into spying. I speak with author Andrew Long who has written “Secrets of the Cold War – espionage and intelligence operations from both sides of the Iron Curtain” which covers this story and many others. As we continue ramping up for SpyCast 2.0, featuring a content overhaul and improved audio, we release a real gem on a perennial favorite of the SpyCast community. You literally couldn’t make this one up, it has everything you’d expect to see at Shakespeare’s Globe – betrayal, suspicion, ambition, political machinations, royal intrigue and flabbergasting chutzpah. Philby. Burgess. MacLean. Blunt. Cairncross. Spies who betrayed their country in the name of an ideal: communism. In the 1930s, five young Cambridge University students were recruited by Soviet intelligence to penetrate the British establishment. In the course of their espionage career, the Five did enormous damage to Western security. The gradual unravelling of the spy ring across the decades also led to mole-hunts and an ever widening ring of paranoia. It even put the “special relationship” between Britain and America under strain. While parts of their story inspired the pages of Cold War spy thrillers, back in 2009 British intelligence author Nigel West examined their motivations and activities, and revealed new evidence he unearthed in Soviet intelligence archives.

“Government funds alone simply aren't going to get the job done. What's needed is the engagement of the private sector and the private capital flows that come into these markets to make lasting change sustainable.” Created in 2004 with broad bipartisan support, the Millennium Challenge Corporation is a U.S. Government aid agency that seeks to reduce poverty in the developing world through economic growth. CEO Sean Cairncross is committed to working with governments that have a proven record of stability, good governance, and existing investments in their own people. He proudly points to the fact that MCC was recently ranked first among U.S aid agencies for transparency. “Each project has to have a certain economic rate of return before MCC will invest in it,” he tells Mike. “We look at that over the course of time for 20 years after that project is completed in order to report essentially to our stakeholders, the U S taxpayer, that this is money well spent and that we've achieved a result.”
For this episode, I’m joined by Jude Cairncross, who over the last 8 years, went from living in a house to a van, a bus and now an amazing tiny house truck. We talk about life on the road in New Zealand, navigating busy holiday periods and noisy people as an introvert and the amazing community of travellers we have here in NZ. Jude also shared some great tips for others who are looking to get into this lifestyle. To see some photos of Jude’s Tiny House Truck, check out this article: https://www.nzmcd.co.nz/features/2008/when-big-meets-tiny

Nicola was experiencing a difficult and confusing week and no sooner had she reached out to Judith for some help than things began to improve. In The Show It has been a cooler week in Stoupa and all her guests are gone, but Nicola’s internet is still not fixed which has made it difficult for her to do everything she wants to online and in her business. And she’s still without a cleaner. Judith has found Suffolk to be full of bug perils (tiny wasps and big fat mozzies), and also surprisingly social with two outings in six days. That’s a lot for her. What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Judith really enjoyed an outing with a long-time colleague in the Waitrose café at Sudbury (!) and Nicola couldn’t find anything whatsoever to discuss in this section this week, which she explains later. Focus Of The Week Nicola was experiencing a difficult and confusing week and no sooner had she reached out to Judith for some help than things began to improve. She’s had some challenges but really couldn’t work out what to do about them. Judith and she debate the bigger issue and try to draw some conclusions and what, if anything, is to be done. Start with simplifying the problem, and testing solutions one at a time. LISTEN HERE TO OWN IT #237 | Dust and Doldrums Words Of The Week Nicola chooses Doldrums and Judith picks Language. Project Updates Nicola mentions podcast download numbers, generally up, her big project is still on after she tickled the other side into a timely response, no progress on her audio book but she’s invested in some Instagram influencer marketing with gratifying early results in terms of follower numbers. Who Or What’s Impressed Nicola enjoyed Ryan Levesque’s interview with James Schramko about RL’s new book Choose. Judith enjoyed Howard Jacobson on R4’s Point of View, talking about The Language of Leaving. *** Join our free Facebook Group for Own It! the Podcast and talk back to us about what you hear in the show. Nicola is re-launching Swagger & Soul and wants to know what Judith thinks about it. She’s mainly all for it and explains why. In The Show Nicola’s sold her first item of #StoupaLife merchandise, manifested a surprise affiliate win and is looking forward to visits from her family and friends across the summer. She’s really booked up now. Judith has enjoyed some spooky goings-on in the bedroom, found somewhere to live for next week and is slightly worried about triffids in the garden. What will the returning householder think? What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Judith did a VIP day with a favourite long-time client, which both found exhausting but productive. Nicola has received a couple of fabulous testimonials from two of her Vegas pals after working their way through her 21-day Be Everywhere Online challenge and getting some great results and sales. Focus Of The Week Nicola is re-launching Swagger & Soul and wants to know what Judith thinks about it. She’s mainly all for it and explains why. LISTEN HERE TO OWN IT #234 | Bigger Thinking Words Of The Week Nicola chooses Potential and Judith picks Anonymous. Project Updates Nicola is working on the deal of her life, white-labelling Be Everyone Online for her first client, the first of several or even many she hopes. And she reports that Own It! is back in the Top 100 at #64, just where Judith likes it, sandwiched between Tony Robbins and other male marketing/personal development luminaries.Judith is thinking of writing three books, two of which would need to be anonymous. How do you market anonymously?? Who Or What’s Impressed Nicola appreciates film-maker Matthew Toman and his upcoming movie The Evolution of Success. Judith likes Lorna Bevan of Hare in the Moon Astrology. *** Join our free Facebook Group for Own It! the Podcast and talk back to us about what you hear in the show. New Zealand publisher Linda Cassells has built a successful business and in this episode, she shares some tips about communicating with clients. In The Show Nicola’s had a difficult few days culminating in her kettle triggering a loss of electricity this morning just as she was making coffee, wanting to take a shower and get online for the podcast recording. Fortunately, an electrician “magically” appears and sorts it all out for fifty euro and just in time. She will need a new kettle too. Judith’s week has been about new client attraction, the supermoon, sleep and sleeplessness. Abraham Hicks and making a new Facebook friend who owns and runs a coach business, as distinct from a coaching business. What's Fuelled Their Fire? Nicola talks about the benefits of taking 100% responsibility for what happens in your own life and how that helps her. She tells Judith that the podcast is nearing 100k downloads at 96,196. Facebook Group, Amy and Kerryn. Focus Of The Week Successful New Zealand publisher Linda Cassells shares some tips about communication: 1. Knowing your communication style 2. Setting boundaries 3. Dealing with difficulties 4. Taking initiative Words Of The Week Nicola and Judith both choose Vibration and decide that’s entirely appropriate given the emphasis of today’s show. Project Updates Nicola reports that she’s up to the 20,000-word mark in her book, and working on what is called the middle build and key scenes. She’s made her heroine younger so that some romance can be introduced. Judith has written twice this week on Monday and she introduces a new project, selling one of her buy-to-let properties. Who Or What's Impressed Nicola picks out Annabel and Irini as her stars in week one of this year’s Masterchef. And Judith is excited by a model and a platform for monetising her newsletter. Classical and jazz singer shares the ups and downs of life on the road and how to make money in between. Heather Cairncross, is of course, also lucky enough to be Nicola's sister Heather's uniquely versatile voice has allowed her to sing successfully at the highest level internationally in many musical genres. Her career has included concert performances at Carnegie Hall with Stephane Grappelli, operas at La Scala, Milan, and solo engagements with the world's leading ensembles including the Chicago, Boston and London Symphony Orchestras. A specialist in both contemporary and baroque music, Heather sings with Steve Reich and Musicians as well as being a member of, and soloist for Sir John Eliot Gardiner's Monteverdi Choir (which Gramophone Magazine voted Best Choir in the World in 2010). She is equally in demand in the recording studio. In addition to the fifteen albums she recorded as a member of a cappella group The Swingle Singers, she has sung for artists such as Tony Bennett, Björk, Mike Oldfield and Michael Jackson. She has also recorded many film scores including Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars and La Vie en Rose (BAFTA 2008 winner). Heather premiered David Newton's Jazz Song Cycle Portrait of a Woman in 2009 and they have enjoyed collaborating ever since. He has been voted Best Pianist by the British Jazz awards eleven times. Together, they recorded a CD called At Last which Walter Love on BBC Radio Ulster's Jazz Club described as “a remarkable example of empathy and understanding…as near to perfect as you're likely to get.” At the time of this recording, Heather was just back from a tour of China and had a busy year which included appearances at the Lincoln Centre as a soloist with the NY Philharmonic and at the Glastonbury Festival with Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead. Just Jazz Magazine wrote of her CD “I am not overstating it to suggest this recording is absolutely exceptional…..it is as good as any vocal album I have ever heard for a very long time. Just superb!” And All About Jazz said “When Cairncross sings……she makes every word count. Her voice, technically excellent and emotionally engaging, gives each lyric a very personal perspective, as if these are her stories, not just her interpretation of others' tales. It's the mark of a great jazz vocalist.” Chosen from over a thousand applicants to attend a special day at BBC centre to encourage more women into local radio presenting, Heather has just got a date for her first stint on Radio Sussex – watch this space… Listen To Heather Connect with Heather HeatherCairncross.com Facebook Twitter Please listen to the podcast to hear Heather's full mind, marketing and money tips for entrepreneurs.
