On today's Complicated Conversations, we welcome Catherine Steadman, an author, screenwriter, and actress often recognized for playing Mabel Lane Fox in Downton Abbey. Catherine's new novel, Look In The Mirror, is a psychological thriller with a propulsive plot that will have you turning pages through every heart-pounding twist and turn.  We chat with Catherine about her exploration of themes of secrets, identity, and the complexities of familial relationships. She delves into the character development of Nina and Maria, the narrative structure of her book, and the inspirations drawn from escape room/game theory stories and literary influences like T.S. Eliot's poem, The Wasteland. Catherine writes like an actor, thinking first of character and theme and it clearly shows! Finally, she shares details about writing the screenplay for the forthcoming adaptation of Lisa Jewel's bestselling novel, Then She Was Gone. Look In The Mirror is out now!

Catherine Steadman, author of 'Look in the Mirror' - Actor turned bestselling thriller writer discusses career pivots, character nuances, and why word count doesn't matter

Catherine Steadman had a very successful acting career, starring in 'Downton Abbey', 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen', 'Fearless' and many more. In her early 30s, she started to think about how her future as an actor might pan out. It's been well documented that roles for older women are depressingly stark, and often frustratingly uninspired. Giving that some thought, Catherine decide to switch things around, and trusting that her story-telling and improvisational abilities learned from acting would transfer well, started writing fiction. Her debut was 'Something in the Water', it became a Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick, which launched her to success. She's a New York Times Bestseller, has sold millions of copies and been published around the world. Her newest novel is 'Look in the Mirror', which looks at the lives of Nina and Maria, and how their lives become entangled with a huge house in the British Virgin Islands. It's a mysterious thriller which Catherine was keen to keep speculative, and not let it creep into being gritty or grimy.Catherine talks about how acting has helped her writing, why she feels able to understand the nuances of characters well, also why novelty is key to her day, and how she keeps grounded after sudden success. You can support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. She just completed her first novel, Foam, a surf adventure with a female protagonist, Casasandra Lee who is an out of work journalist whose life is in shambles and runs to Rincon Puerto Rico in hopes of realizing her dreams. It's when she is researching a free diver's death, she uncovers a drug ring and kidnapping plot and discovers that this sleepy town has a darker underbelly. It's a welcome novel that fills a missing genre of women's fiction and also follows in the tradition of such great writers as Kem Nunn, Tim Winton,Taylor Jenkins, Catherine Steadman and Don Winslow. Laurel is from Wilmington North Carolina but has made her way up North for the Women's Surf Film festival and I'm stoked to have her on the show. The actress and thriller writer Catherine Steadman visits the podcast this week to talk about “The Disappearing Act,” her new suspense novel about the absurdities of Hollywood. Steadman was drawn to the idea of setting a story during pilot season, when actors from all over the world descend on Los Angeles once a year and compete for lead roles in new TV series.“It's a sort of competitive world where friendships are made really quickly, and people will find their nemesis — someone who looks just like them who keeps snatching away parts from them,” she says. “It's a very strange atmosphere but it's very fun. It's kind of like the Vegas of the acting world. You go there, you cash your chips and you have a roll on the table and see what happens. There's all these strangers with the same desires and goals, in the same environment, and they really are up against each other. It's kind of a ‘Hunger Games' situation.”Michael Dobbs visits the podcast to talk about his new book, “King Richard,” which finds fresh things to say about President Richard Nixon and Watergate. Dobbs discusses writing about a story that's been told many times, all in the shadow of perhaps the best-known Watergate book, “All the President's Men,” by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.“That's the story of two reporters pursing this scandal into the White House and trying to figure out what was going on in the White House,” Dobbs says. “And now 50 years later — because we have access to these extraordinary materials, particularly Nixon's own tape-recorded conversations — one can tell the story from the inside rather than the outside. We're never again going to get such an intimate look at a president facing an existential crisis, as it's possible to get with Richard Nixon.”Also on this week's episode, Tina Jordan looks back at Book Review history as it celebrates its 125th anniversary, Alexandra Alter has news from the publishing world, and Parul Sehgal and Jennifer Szalai talk about books they've recently reviewed. Pamela Paul is the host. Here are the books discussed by the Times's critics this week:“Wayward” by Dana Spiotta“Nightmare Scenario: Inside the Trump Administration's Response to the Pandemic That Changed History” by Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta

In this final episode of the first series, we take you on a quick trip to the South of France with a brief dalliance in Minnesota. Critically acclaimed, international best seller, Peter May, joins Theresa Talbot from his home in France. He talks about his brand new book, Lockdown, written 15 years ago about a global pandemic which closes London down. Peter talks about digging deep in writing, the importance of research, and you’ll hear about his best-selling Lewis Trilogy, The China Thrillers and Enzo Files - there could be a new 7th book in the series coming next. Peter’s book recommendation is Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger - he predicts that it will be recognised as an American classic one day (remember, you heard it here first). Mr Nobody by Catherine Steadman. She did a terrific book last year which I talked about on the show called Something in the Water. She's actually an actress, probably best known for her role as Lady Mabel Fox in Downton Abbey, and she has a kind of cinematic approach to writing. This is about a man who' s found washed up on a beach with no memory or knowledge of his name or where he came from; but when a neuropsychiatrist is called in to help, he knows the name she went by before tragedy struck her family and she changed it – and a whole lot more besides.Saving Missy by Beth Morrey. Missy Carmichael is 79 and she's old, miserable, not particularly likeable and desperately lonely. Her world changes when she meets new friends which opens up her life in ways she could never have imagined and she's saved by the people around her. Looking back on a life filled with regrets, Missy discovers it's never too late to learn how to live.

Chapter 1 – Third-Grade Reading Challenge, Part 2 There is so much going on with the "Sno-Isle Libraries Mega-Fun, Biblio-Trivia, Rockem-Sockem Third-Grade Reading Challenge" that it takes two segments to get it all in. This literary trivia program for students enrolled in public schools throughout Snohomish and Island counties. Part 1 explores the origins of the reading challenge and the important academic and development reasons it is aimed at third-graders. In Part 2, Sno-Isle Libraries reporter Abe Martinez continues his conversation with Joy Feldman, Lead Librarian for Early Literacy, and Jane Lopez-Santillana, Children’s Librarian at the Oak Harbor Library. They explore the origins of the reading challenge and the important academic and development reasons it is aimed at third-graders. Feldman points out that while the program is focused on reading, introducing students to teamwork is a significant part of the reading challenge. “Teamwork very important,” Feldman says. “Teams with that do have a mix of abilities tend to do better.” There can be benefits to the families of the participating students, too, Lopez-Santillana says. “Many (school staff members) mention that the third-grade reading challenge brings parents in who they don’t otherwise see,” Lopez-Santillana says. “Parents mention they are having more interactions with their children. Students have said, ‘This is the first time reading in English in my house’ and ‘I’m reading to my little brother and he likes it so much he’s making me read every night.’” The third-grade reading challenge encourages children to have fun and enjoy reading while honing their literacy and teamwork skills. After reading six books, children participate in in-school, semifinal and final Reading Challenge events. These competitive events are styled like a knowledge quiz bowl, testing the teams' knowledge of the books. In 2018-19, 1,334 third-graders participated on 193 teams from 51 schools across Snohomish and Island counties. Growing up in Snohomish, Bates says her parents would let her go by herself to the library, then housed in the Carnegie building, knowing she would be safe and entertained. “I spent a lot of time there in high school,” says Bates, now a Lake Stevens resident. “I read a lot of stuff. I read a lot of science fiction, I read a lot of historical fiction.” Bates adds that books, and the library, first caught her attention as a student at Cathcart Elementary where she discovered choose-your-own-adventure books. “You could read 15 different endings in one book and I just thought it was so clever,” she says. At college to get a teaching degree, Bates says an “off-hand comment” by a professor put her on a path back to the elementary-school library and Snohomish where she is now, serving as school librarian at Riverview Elementary. Bates says familiarity with library resources paid off on a recent cross-country family vacation by car, even though they were far from home. “We downloaded audiobooks from OverDrive,” Bates says. The result was family-time listening to and then discussing the stories. Links OverDrive at Sno-Isle Libraries Choose-your-own-adventure books Lake Stevens Library Board Snohomish Carnegie Foundation City of Snohomish Carnegie Project Chapter length: 5:29 Chapter 3 - Book Notes with Marie Byars Oak Harbor Library staff member Marie Byars offers two recommendations: “Something in the Water” by Catherine Steadman, is a “fast-paced, twisty thriller,” Byars says. “Our House” by Louise Candlish is the story of divorced parents take turns coming back to the family home to raise their children until one day the mother finds a moving van at the house and a new family moving in. Show notes Camille Crofton Cherry This was a great conversation over a nice bottle of wine. The conversation starts out a little stiff frankly which is funny since Camille and I have known one another for quite some time. However, after the first break, it really opens up around the 30 minute mark and we have a great discussion about women in the workplace, especially in a male dominated industry like the maritime industry. Amazon links are affiliate based and we appreciate your support by using same. Camille is a third generation family member at Crofton Industries When looking up subaqueous cabling (3:45) which rolls off Camille’s tongue like she have been saying it her whole life (she has), I found this really interesting article. Camille mentioned a lot of books she likes including: The Coaching Habit by Michael-Bungay-Stanier (20:00) https://amzn.to/2XDY02H Radical Candor by Kim Scott (59:13) https://amzn.to/2DvI1Mp And for light beach reading she recommended: Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman 1:04:52 https://amzn.to/2DtOO9qand The Alice Network by Kate Quinn 1:05 https://amzn.to/2GzkRW2 We discussed The Complement Sandwich which Camille also referred to as a Shit Sandwich and which I was unfamiliar with. 52:50 I found this interesting article about it here. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/creative-leadership/201808/no-one-wants-eat-your-compliment-sandwich I struggled to find a citation to the concept that if someone is arguing with you they respect you which we discussed at 58:25. However I did find that the quote “Everyone you meet is an expert in something you are not” or at least a variant thereof (1:12:30) is attributed to Bill Nye of “Science Guy” fame. https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/651871-everyone-you-will-ever-meet-knows-something-you-don-t For those of you who did not understand the reference to Monica Padman of Armchair Expert fame and fortune (1:15:00) You can learn about her here: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3974945/ Camille apparently performed the Star Spangled Banner in front of numerous crowds including at the Norfolk Tides minor league baseball team. https://www.milb.com/norfolk She also performed at the a minor league soccer team that was the Virginia Beach Mariners, who shut down in 2007. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Beach_Mariners and at the Richmond Vultures Roller Hockey, which was a major league roller hockey team (who knew) that played until 1998. http://www.hockeydb.com/stte/virginia-vultures-8845.html Oh and as a final note, I tried and tried to find a video of Camille on The Next Big Star, the Ed McMahon talent show (1:18:00) but I just couldn’t. However, I did find this article so we know she is legit: https://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-xpm-20000721-2000-07-21-0007210037-story.html
