A recent 59:23 half-marathon for American long-distance star Alex Maier wasn't a case of him catching lightning in a bottle. It was the culmination of years of quiet dominance: from Oklahoma State to national titles, American records, and a seamless transition to the roads. And with his stellar race in Houston, he's now the second-fastest U.S. man of all time at the half-marathon distance. But this isn't a random one-off occurrence. In 2025, he won the Düsseldorf Marathon in April with a time of 2:08:33; it was a top-15 all-time mark for a U.S. runner. He also claimed his first national title in March in Atlanta, running 1:00:48 to secure a spot on Team USA; and then set a 10-mile American record of 45:15 at the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in April. He was a former standout at Oklahoma State, where he earned multiple First-Team All-America honors, including a 5th-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He also placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000m and 5,000m in 2023.He's gone from NCAA standout to national champion; from American records at 10 miles on the road to becoming the second-fastest U.S. half marathoner ever. His trajectory is impossible to ignore. Got feedback about this episode? Send Carolyn a textKevin Smith is a 56-year-old masters runner and multiple Canadian record holder from Mississauga, Ontario. When he turned 55, Kevin set out on an audacious mission: to chase 12 Canadian road running records in 12 months. He achieved 6 of them — and “failed” at 6 — but Kevin doesn't see that as a setback. For him, failure is simply the toll we pay for chasing big dreams. And nobody, he claims, has failed more than he has!Kevin discovered his potential as a high school athlete under the guidance of a coach who helped him fall in love with the sport. But his journey has been far from linear. Kevin has battled more than his fair share of injuries over the years — any one of which could have ended his running career. A physiotherapist once told him he should have never taken up the sport in the first place! Instead, Kevin doubled down on understanding his body, created what he calls "exercise snacks," and learned the importance of the other 23 hours a day when he's not running. Those decades of perseverance have paid off. Kevin is now one of the top masters runners in North America… and even the world. "{Houston} was a really great season opener and showed me again that I could fuel like I even fuel in the half marathon now, it's I'm able to take fuel. It's, and sustain my training and feel healthy and finishing strong in my races," shares Molly Bookmyer. Bookmyer is an elite distance runner based in Columbus OH. She walked onto the Ohio State XC/Track and FIeld teams, but left the sport before graduating because of some frustrating injuries and health issues. She wasn't getting regular periods, which actually led to her healthcare team discovering a small brain tumor. After some time away from the sport she got back into distance running and eventually qualified for both the 2020 and 2024 Marathon Olympic Trials. While her marathon and half-marathon times have improved over the years—she ran a PR and won the 2024 Twin Cities Marathon in 2:28, and ran a half-marathon PR at the 2025 Houston Marathon with a 1:09—she has also navigated some intense challenges with gut health and fueling.  We recorded this right before she traveled to DC where she ran the Cherry Blossom 10-miler, which she finished in 52:42, 8th overall female and 7th american. As she shared on Instagram, she “Ran over a minute PR in the 10 mile race and snagged a 10k PR of 32:11 in the process”.  Next up is London, so we'll be virtually cheering for her in a few weeks! This episode covers a lot! We discuss:  Her 14th place finish at the Half marathon championships in March 2025 Why she's planning to do more races this year How she walked onto the XC/TF team at Ohio State in college, her experience as a collegiate athlete, and why she quit after a few years How she found out she had a small brain tumor, which may have been related to her experience with amenorrhea  Why and how she got back into high level/elite running, which only a few years later landed her in 3rd place at the 2019 US 25K Championship How her fueling has evolved, especially after two stress fractures in/around 2020, and then a very unpleasant experience during the 2022 Houston Marathon Her gluten-free fueling strategies and what's working well for her now Her water bottle secret for elites And her post-race journaling prompts!  Follow Molly on Instagram to cheer her on, @MollyBookie.  Follow Lane 9 @Lane9Project.  Connect with a women's health and sport clinician to get support with YOUR fueling, mental health, and/or period health by going to Lane9Project.org/directory.

The inaugural Grand Slam Track is in the books. What went right, what went wrong, and what were our thoughts? as Emmauel Wanyonyi pulled the upset over the Olympic milers Hocker, Kerr and Nuguse and picked up $100,000 as so did Grant Fisher in a controversial fashion. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone cruised to her $100,000 while at the Cherry Blossom 10 miler Taylor Roe broke the world best and was fantastic as Charles Hicks got the win on the men's side over Alex Maier who got the Americna record. In this episode of I Want That Too, Jim Hill and Lauren Hersey explore the colorful world of theme park merchandise—from Epcot's Flower & Garden Festival to Universal's Epic Universe rollout—and spotlight a pastel plush lineup that's taking over Japan (and maybe your shelf next). Figment's Flattening at Flower & Garden – Lauren shares her thoughts on Disney's 3D-printed topiaries, the orange spirit jersey, and whether Figment is looking a little… squished this year. Captain Cacao and Universal Merch Madness – Jim breaks down Universal's plans to “Adopt a Dragon,” upgrade wands with haptic tech, and introduce new mascots, including a butter beer-loving bear. Cherry Blossom Duffy and the Pastel Plush Invasion – From Baymax in bloom to sleepy Marie, Jim and Lauren review Japan's newest spring merch—and speculate if Duffy's soft-spoken friends will ever click stateside. Bounding for the Gala – Lauren previews her Disneybound look for the Epcot 40th Anniversary Gala, complete with Cinderella blue and glass slipper energy. Flower & Garden Tips – A rundown of the Egg-stravaganza scavenger hunt, the collectible prize system, and why it's one of the best festival activities for families on a budget. This episode is filled with plush previews, theme park strategies, and the delightful chaos of spring merch season. Be Our Guest Vacations Planning your next Disney vacation?
