This past August long weekend, the 2024 Mosaic Festival took place in the pine forest behind the Community Hall. An annual community arts and culture festival produced by Ptarmigan Arts, Mosaic Fest celebrates the diversity of the land we live on and the beings who inhabit it. It features music, workshops, and nature-based programming. The festival had a big upgrade this year with a change of venues, to a beautiful property, which was generously offered by Karl Hamson. It was three amazing days of music and art. On the last night, I decided to take my handheld audio recorder and have some fun. I selected random people from the audience, and asked them to pick a number between 1 and 5. Based on what number they chose, they got a pre-written list of three questions to answer- a silly one, a surface one, and a deep one. The results were fascinating and delightful. Thank you to all the lovely people who agreed to participate...I hope you enjoyed playing along with me, as much as I enjoyed recording it with you. ____________________________________________________________________________ If you are interested in learning more about recording an audio memoir, you can email me by clicking this. ____________________________________________________________________________ To stay up-to-date with new episodes, here are some of the ways you can subscribe... In 2009, Sherry Anne has a chance meeting at a music festival with a man named, Mathew. They fell in love, moved to Pender, got married and had a child together. While living on the island, they became deeply involved in the music scene and would eventually open a restaurant, which provided a unique space for touring and local musicians to perform. Sherry Anne will share stories from these times, as well, speak very openly about the challenges she faced as a new mother and how she ultimately came out the other side of that experience, in a way she never expected. All this and more, in an incredibly honest and inspiring interview with a wonderful person. Enjoy. It is Thursday morning, 6th January, the year 2022, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. If we go straight to Job 22:29, the Lord says He will save the humble person. 1 Peter 5:5 is the same scripture and James 4:6 says, God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. He will save the humble person - Always remember, pride comes before a fall. How many times have we seen an arrogant person brought low because of pride? The mighty Titanic, the ship they said it was unsinkable... Never say anything like that to anybody and not to the Lord. On its maiden voyage it sunk, like a stone, to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. But God gives grace to the humble - That is why God loved Moses so much, Moses was a man who was so humble. Remember, humility is controlled strength. Moses was the humblest man that lived, yet he was not weak by any means. Many years ago, I was preaching in Scotland. I was in a little country village, in the Community Hall. It was a midweek meeting early in the morning, maybe 9 or 10 o'clock and it was full of lovely folk, country folk. We were having tea and cucumber sandwiches when the organizer introduced me to a middle-aged man. He looked very fit, straight back and dressed in gumboots, a tweed jacket and wearing a deer-stalker, I asked him, “Sir, what do you do for a living?” He said, “I am a part-time farmer and I am a soldier.” He said, “By the way Angus, I have been looking forward to meeting you but at the end of this meeting, I have to go because I have another meeting after this.” I said, “No problem.”He said, “I will sit at the back so I don't interfere with the meeting.”Well, I started preaching and sure enough, just towards the end of the meeting, he stood up, gave me a big wave and slipped out the back of the hall. After the meeting, the organizer came to me and said, “That gentleman that you were having tea with, do you know who he is?”I said, “Yes, he said he was a soldier.” He said he is the Commander General for the Nato Forces for the whole of Europe, answerable personally to Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain, herself.” A soldier indeed!Humility is a wonderful thing, go out today and be humble and God will raise you up.God bless you and goodbye.
This week I ramble about my first full week in my house in Yellow Pine. And the writing process. And the dread of dredging up a lot of painful memories from my childhood. But it's not all bad! One of SacredSpace102fm's popular podcasts from our archives, an interview with the late Fr John Cribben OMI from Shanagolden in West Limerick. Fr John spent his ministry working in Rio de Janario and shares his vocation story with our listeners in this interview. Born on 29 October 1936, Shannagolden, Co. Limerick, Fr Cribbin studied at Shannagolden National School, St. Senan's and St. Munchin's College, Limerick. He completed his studies at University College Dublin in 1958 (Philosophy), and Piltown, Co. Kilkenny (Theology). He was ordained to the priesthood on 24 September 1961 and arrived in Brazil on 15 November 1962. He was one of the founders of an Oblate mission in the town of São Simão (Jataí Diocese), Goiás State, in the interior of Brazil. On 24 November 1966 he was called to work in the city of Rio de Janeiro (São José parish). In the mid 1970s he was nominated to coordinate the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro's pastoral work in the West Zone of the city, an area that included half of Rio's population and 64 favelas (shanty towns) at the time. His work involved setting up and organizing local residents' associations in each favela, identifying potential leaders and training them in community organisations to deal with problems such as the lack of light, water, sewage, drainage and health facilities. Fr. John Cribbin´s parish included nine churches which he himself helped to build and design, including one located inside a prison compound. Most of the churches have smaller community centres attached to them where courses such as needle work and home crafts are held. Instruction is also given aimed at improving the level of hygiene and health of the local population. Literacy classes, as well as courses for preparing students for admission to technical colleges and universities are also offered. There are plans in the near future to offer free computer courses for some of the poor younger members of the parish in order to better their chances in the local work market. On 10 July 1989 Fr. Cribbin received the Pedro Ernesto Medal, the highest civic honour awarded by the Rio de Janeiro city legislature in recognition of his outstanding services to members of the underprivileged population of the city's West Zone. In March 1995 he gave a welcome address on behalf of all the Irish missionaries in Brazil to the then President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, during her State visit to Brazil that year. In July 2001 the Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D. paid a visit to Fr. Cribbin's parish to inaugurate a Community Hall co-funded by Ireland Aid, and on 28 March 2004 President Mary McAleese inaugurated a new community Centre during a visit to his parish. Following a unanimous vote by the 42 members of the House of Representative of the Municipality of Rio, elected representative Adilson Pires conferred the title of Honorary Citizen of Rio de Janeiro to Limerick man Fr. John Cribbin O.M.I., during an emotional ceremony attend by over 300 guests on 21 August 2004. The event took place at Fr. Cribbin's parish in Magalhães Bastos on the outskirts of Rio where he has served the local community for the past 38 years. Originally broadcast 9th August 2010.
