European leaders and Trump administration officials are attending the Munich Security Summit over the weekend. We'll have the latest on what was discussed, and how it might effect the war in Ukraine." Also, as we continue a deep dive into Ukraine news, we reflect on the "Maidan Revolution," as it's been called, which was a protest against a Russia-installed leader of Ukraine. Many people, especially younger Ukrainians, wanted the country to lean toward the West, not Russia. And, in Ukraine, musician Svyatoslav Vakarchuk is a living legend. But few of his songs have had as much meaning or poignancy as "Chovan," which describes the country on both sides of the Dnipro River. As The World's hosts explain, while the bridge over that river has been destroyed, the spiritual bridge that connects all Ukrainians remains firmly intact.   Listen to today's Music Heard on Air. Julian Evans first visited the city of Odesa, Ukraine on a boat journey down the Dnipro River in 1994. He fell in love with its distinct personality as a self-contained world. He also fell in love with a local woman, and for nearly thirty years, her city became his city, too. His new book, Undefeatable: Odesa in Love and War, weaves memoir with history and literature to give us a haunting portrait of a country struggling against terrible odds to survive.  We spoke about the city of Odesa, his visits to front line combat zones, and what Russia's war means for Europe.

It's Monday, August 12th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims shot two Christian men On August 4th, Islamic Fulani militants shot two Christian men in the Bokkos area of the Plateau State in Nigeria, reports International Christian Concern. The men, whose names are being withheld for their protection, are thankful to be alive.  One of them said, “To the glory of God, we both survived.” David John, the medical director of the hospital where the men are currently receiving treatment, said the hospital's staff would provide them with the best medical care.   Bokkos was one of three Plateau communities targeted by Muslim Fulani militants during the Christmas Eve massacre in 2023. In those attacks, more than 200 Christians were killed, including 148 people in Bokkos.  According to Open Doors, Nigeria is the sixth most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Pray for God's justice in Nigeria.  Proverbs 21:15  says, “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.” Ukrainian navy takes out Russian gas rig Ukraine blasted a Russian gas rig in the Black Sea near the Dnipro River, killing 40 Russian soldiers, reports The U.S. Sun.   Dramatic footage shows a giant fireball erupting from the Russian headquarters after it was targeted by the Ukrainian Navy.  The decimated rig was packed with “reconnaissance equipment” to help with Russia's war effort. Ukrainian officials claimed the gas rig used to be controlled by their military, but had become occupied by Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces in recent years. Harris leads Trump in 3 battleground states Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump in three crucial battleground states, according to new surveys by The New York Times and Siena College. This is the latest indication of a dramatic reversal in standing for Democrats after President Biden's departure from the presidential race. Harris is ahead of Trump by four percentage points in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, 50 percent to 46 percent among likely voters in each state. The surveys were conducted from Aug. 5 to 9. Trump: Kamala Harris not smart enough to hold news conference Despite her rise in the polls, Donald Trump does not think Kamala Harris is smart enough to hold a news conference. TRUMP: “She can't do a news conference. She doesn't know how to do a news conference. She's not smart enough to do a news conference. I'm sorry. We need smart people to lead this country because our country has never been in this danger before, both economically and from an outside perspective.” Kamala Harris: “Everybody needs to be woke!” A video of Vice President Kamala Harris declaring that “everybody needs to be woke” in 2017 has resurfaced and gone viral on social media, reports Media Research Center. Appearing with philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple Founder Steve Jobs, Harris spoke at the 2017 Recode Code Conference. Listen. HARRIS: "We have to stay woke. Like everybody needs to be woke. You can talk about if you're the woke-est or woke-er, but just stay more woke than less woke." Send letters to 6 imprisoned pro-lifers Pro-life rescuers either in or awaiting prison have made – and are making – gigantic sacrifices for practicing non-violent civil disobedience at abortion mills on behalf of their pre-born brothers and sisters.  By giving up their emotional support networks of family, friends, and colleagues, these pro-life heroes are in danger of a loneliness that can be felt even – or especially – in a crowded prison cafeteria or yard. Some of them have been handed years-long sentences, reports LifeSiteNews.com. You can send letters to six of these imprisoned pro-life heroes through addresses you can access through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. You can send letters to Jonathan Darnel, Will Goodman, Lauren Handy, Heather Idoni, Jean Marshall, and Bevelyn Williams at their respective prisons.  Even a 2-3 sentence letter, which would take no time at all, especially from your children, would lift their spirits. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “ Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up.” Please read the 10 tips for writing them and sign the prayer pledge for the pro-life rescuers facing a decade in prison. MacGyver-minded officer saves toddler And finally, from Kansas comes the story of a quick-thinking rescue that hauled a 14-month-old toddler from a would-be tomb at the bottom of a drain pipe, reports Good News Network. The terrifying ordeal was caught on camera and saw a Moundridge Police Department officer build on the spot a makeshift catchpole typically used for pulling varmints out of hard-to-reach places. Secured under his shoulders, the loop of rope at the end of the catchpole was able to lift the boy, named Bently, out from where he was trapped 10 feet down a section of 12-inch-wide PVC pipe that had been buried vertically. The parents said they called 9-1-1 just before 2:00 p.m. when they realized Bently had fallen into the PVC hole. Blake, the father's boy, described his emotions before the rescue to the local news station. BLAKE:  “Looking down at him as he was screaming, he wanted out of there, he wanted help and you can't do anything. It's complete helplessness. It's horrifying, it's haunting, to feel so helpless, knowing that your child is in serious need of help.” When police, fire department, and EMS arrived at the family's home about 40 miles northwest of Wichita, Officer Ronnie Wagner had an idea. WAGNER: “I threaded some rope through a PVC pipe, tied a knot at the end of it so that it would slip, and we used it to wrap around under his shoulders here and lift him out of the hole.” Watch a video of the dramatic rescue through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. The toddler's father was deeply grateful. BLAKE: “It's a blessing and a miracle to have a First Responder that lives right behind us. There aren't words to express our gratitude.” Zephaniah 3:17 says, “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you … and will rejoice over you with singing.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, August 12th, in the year of our Lord 2024.  Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Earlier this month, a huge dam on the Dnipro River, in the Kherson region occupied by Russian forces in South-Eastern Ukraine, was blown up, flooding vast areas. Each side in the war predictably blamed the other, but the weight of motive and opportunity pointed to Russia, as it was in the process of hampering the imminent Ukrainian counteroffensive. While not unprecedented, such acts in war are rare, in modern times. Are they effective? Moral? Legal - could their perpetrators be tried as war criminals? And considering all of the above, is the threat of going to such extremes credible as a deterrent against a comparable act, such as the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction? This is an issue of universal implications, but it has a specific relevance to the Middle East, with its dams over the Nile, the Euphrates and the Tigris, along with other rivers and waterways. Should policymakers and planners in the region be concerned, lest someone, perhaps a terror group rather than a nation-state, try to emulate the Dnipro sabotage? Panel: - Host: Col. (Res.) Unmistakably, the outstanding last days news story this week was the catastrophic destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Dam in the Dnipro River in Ukraine. Undoubtedly, this tragedy is worse than Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon BP Oil Spill combined. Not only is it a humanitarian crisis, but an ecological, and environmental one, also. Naturally, what makes it worse is that it was man-made. Having said that, I will not speculate on the question as to who blew up the dam. However, I've embedded several videos and tweets that show what a heartbreaking disaster this is. As a result, the whole area will be suffering for months, if not years. We must pray for all those affected. Nevertheless, at the bottom are more amazing stories of how the Good News of Jesus' Salvation is spreading around the world. Thus, there is still a lot of work to do and I am grateful for the privilege to be a part of it in these days. Undeniably, our Confident Hope must come from our personal relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ. Look for the Words of Encouragement at the end. Let's dig in… Keep reading in my blog where there are links to dig deeper with news articles, Bible studies, books, podcasts, and videos… https://seekthegospeltruth.com/2023/06/10/world-watch-6-10-23-prophetic-last-days-news-just-like-jesus-said/ We don't have a choice about what troubles come our way. However, we can choose to have a relationship with Jesus… If you want a true relationship with Jesus, pray this prayer humbly and wholeheartedly… “Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. Please forgive me. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and my life to you. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. I surrender my whole life to you and I will follow you for the rest of my life. Thank You, Jesus, for saving me. In Episode 177 of the CounterVortex podcast, In Episode 177 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg examines the unfolding Kakhovka dam disaster in Ukraine, an evident design by Russia to forestall a Ukrainian counter-offensive into the occupied southeast of the country. Massive flooding has been unleashed downstream, imperiling some of the world's most important farmland. Upstream, coolant water to the Zaporizhzhia power plant is threatened, escalating Russia's "reckless nuclear gamble" at the facility. It is true that the disaster gravely impacts much Russian-held territory, including the Crimea Peninsula. However, despite the Kremlin's official denials of responsibility, Russia's online internal propaganda organs are bragging about it. The Wagner Group mercenary outfit calls the disaster "beautiful" and boasts that the destruction of dams on the Dnipro River is a "trump card" against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned last October that Russia was planning to destroy the Kakhovka dam as a "false flag" attack to blame on Kyiv. The breaching of the dam also comes days after Moscow conveniently instated a four-year moratorium on investigation of industrial disasters in Russian-held territory in Ukraine. And critics note that Russia has never committed a war crime it didn't deny. In any case, the cataclysm on the Dnipro provides a grim test case as the International Criminal Court moves to adopt "ecocide" as a recognized international crime. A large dam on the Dnipro River has been destroyed, causing massive flooding and a dangerous environmental catastrophe in southern Ukraine. The Ukrainians are blaming the Russians; the Russians are blaming the Ukrainians. Meanwhile, the Washington Post is reporting that the CIA was actually tipped off about the coming destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines last year—and that it was tipped off that a Ukrainian military team was planning to do it. The blockbuster story is the latest bit of evidence that the Nord Stream operation was, after all, not the Russians, but the Ukrainians. Lawfare Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes sat down in three conversations to discuss the goings on. First, he spoke with Eric Ciaramella, Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and a former CIA analyst and NSC official on Russia and Ukraine, about the scope and scale of the damage the dam break has done. Then Ben spoke with Dmitri Alperovitch, Chairman of the Silverado Policy Accelerator, about the military implications of the dam break. And he spoke with Shane Harris, one of the reporters whose name is on that Washington Post story byline, about his story and what it all means for the future of the Ukraine war. This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott braved the haze to talk through the week's (very) big national security news stories, including:“Downstream Effects.” The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine promises a new wave of suffering and environmental devastation for Ukrainians living along the Dnipro River. Who is responsible? And what could the ramifications be?“He's Off to Meet the Wizard, The Wonderful Wizard of Laws.” Over the past few weeks, there has been a steady drip of information about Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into former President Trump, leading many to conclude that an indictment is on the horizon. What do we know about the state of the investigation? And where does it seem headed?“Party Animals.” The number of contenders in the 2024 Republican presidential primary has officially doubled, with new candidates like Chris Christie and Mike Pence presenting—or being unable to avoid—the legacy of Jan. 6, among other issues with the direction of the party under former President Trump. What does this mean for the shape of the race? And will it mean for the debate over democratic values? For object lessons, Alan urged listeners to check out the books of author Amor Towles, including his latest book “The Lincoln Highway.” Quinta passed along Tim Alberta's devastating profile of (now former) CNN CEO Chris Licht in The Atlantic, which led to his recent fall. Residents of the Left Bank of the Dnipro River, especially those south of the cities of Kherson and Oleshky, you are not safe. If you live 6 meters above sea level or lower, which you can find this information on Google by searching your city and ‘sea level'. If the road you use to get to your house is 6 meters above sea level or lower, you need to evacuate immediately. The strongest flooding has not yet begun, and will come in a few days. Kia ora,Welcome to Wednesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the 'surprise' rise in the official Australian interest rate benchmark comes as the Chinese yuan weakens sharply past 4.1 to the USD. A weaker Chinese economy and higher regional interest rates will cause inevitable ripples in New Zealand. But first today, there was another dairy auction this morning and another weakish one. For a second consecutive time, prices fell -0.9% in USD terms, but this time that was more than made up by a weakening NZD. In local currency, prices rose +1.7%. The main weakness was the WMP price, down -3.0% from the last event three weeks ago, and a reflection of weak Chinese demand. At the other end of the scale, cheddar cheese rose +7.4%. Today's overall fall just adds to the downward direction we have had almost continuously for the last 15 months now. And it justifies the conservative, falling farm gate payout price indications from both Fonterra and the wider analyst community. The American retail impulse continues to weaken, up a meager +0.6% last week from the same week a year ago on a same store basis, far less than is needed just to keep up with inflation. (This isn't measuring all retail sales of course, only those in traditional store premises.)The US Logistics Manager's Index has reached a new all-time low and for the first time in its 6.5-year history it has moved into contraction territory. This is the third consecutive month of record lows.Canada reported grim residential building consent data overnight, sharply lower in April than March. And their widely-watched local PMI wasn't too flash either, falling to a modest expansion when a rise to a good expansion was anticipated. In China, most large state-owned banks are now sharply cutting deposit rates for customers. Not only is loan demand anaemic, but Beijing is concerned about very high savings rates as households worry about their future prospects. Lower savings rates may induce some to spend rather than save. The Chinese financial institutions' deposit-loan gap grew to a staggering US$6.8 tln at the end of April. In Europe, the destruction of the giant Ukrainian dam on the Dnipro River is causing widespread havoc downstream. It is likely to cause wheat prices to rise globally too as a key part of that trade is now shut down.In a surprise to analysts, the RBA raised its cash rate target by +25 bps yesterday to 4.10%. It was their 12th rate rise in a row. It was a surprise because it was different to what those analysts had interpreted the RBA guidance, not from what many thought they should do. With strong labour markets, the RBA's focus is now clearly on the inflationary threats from rising labour costs and inflation expectations.Globally, the World Bank says the world economy is expected to grow by +2.1% in 2023, up from a +1.7% expansion they projected in January. This is due to greater-than-expected resilience in major economies, including the US they said. However, the 2023 expansion will be much less than the 2022 +3.1% global expansion, and at the new +2.1% it is still weak. The UST 10yr yield will start today at 3.70% and little-changed from yesterday. The price of gold will start today at US$1965/oz and up +US$4 from yesterday. And oil prices have slipped -50 USc today from yesterday at just under US$72/bbl in the US. The international Brent price is now just over US$76/bbl. The Saudi-announced production cuts have had little impact to date. The Kiwi dollar starts today little-changed at 60.7 USc. Against the Aussie we are sharply lower, down -¾c at 91 AUc. Against the euro we are little-changed at 56.8 euro cents. That means the TWI-5 is down another -20 bps at 69.1 from where we left it yesterday. The bitcoin price has bounced back a bit today, recovering some of yesterday's large SEC-Binance induced fall. It is now at US$26,699 which is a partial recovery of +3.6% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been moderate at just on +/- 2.7%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. Ukraine troops have made significant gains in recent days, leaving Russia without full control of any of the four regions it annexed only days ago. Ukraine's counter-offence escalated dramatically, bursting through Russian lines in the country's south on Monday and advancing along the Dnipro River. The breakthrough mirrors similar gains in the country's east, even as Russia moved to up the stakes by annexing four provinces and raising the spectre of nuclear war. At first, the Shapovalov family thought they'd be able to avoid the worst of the fighting. Their village, Skelky, along the Dnipro River in Ukraine, was close to a large nuclear power plant. They didn't think the invading Russian army would dare to shoot anywhere nearby. But the tanks rolled in. They could hear explosions from the bomb shelter some nights. They spent nearly 40 days living under Russian occupation before they were able to escape. Now, they're living in Derby, in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, just miles from the Canadian border. They were the first family to arrive at the “House of Mercy,” a former nursing home recently transformed into housing for more than 30 Ukrainian refugees. House of Mercy is a project of Agape Ministries, an Albany-based Christian nonprofit led by Scott and Theresa Cianciolo that works with developmentally disabled children and adults. This summer, the organization purchased the 10,000-square-foot shuttered nursing home in Derby from North Country Hospital. Many of the Ukrainian families who arrived throughout the month of August have children with disabilities. People with a range of skills — from plumbing to painting to physical therapy — have shown up at the house in recent weeks to volunteer their time, to support arriving families and help convert the building into accessible and comfortable housing. In this episode, Sasha, Dmytro, Oleksandra and Yakov Shapovalov describe their journey out of Russian occupation and their transition to life in Vermont. Theresa and Scott Cianciolo walk reporter Ethan Weinstein through the house in Derby, and discuss how a community quickly came together to build a place of refuge.
