POPULARITY
In his 1988 semiautobiographical novel "The Beautiful Room Is Empty," author Edmund White relates his experiences on the night of June 28, 1969, as he and others passed by the Stonewall Inn, a New York City gay bar: “I suppose the police expected us to run away into the night, as we'd always done before, but we stood across the street on the sidewalk of the small triangular park. … Everyone booed the cops, just as though they were committing a shameful act. We kept exchanging peripheral glances, excited and afraid.” The uprising that White witnessed is described by the Library of Congress as a “tipping point” for the gay liberation movement in the United States. One year later, the first Pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago – the beginning of an annual June tradition of events commemorating Stonewall and the continuation of prior decades of activism and demonstrations for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people. White, the author of over 30 books of fiction and nonfiction and hundreds of essays and articles, died on June 3, 2025. He's called a “towering figure in American literature” who is “most justly known as one of the singular lights of gay letters” by Jonathan Alexander, UC Irvine Chancellor's Professor of English and informatics who's been named the next chair of the campus's nationally ranked Department of English. In this wide-ranging episode of The UC Irvine Podcast, Alexander reflects on both White and Pride. He also describes how he thinks about fear in the face of uncertainty, his vision for the future of the UC Irvine English department, and what he's learning through his current research on how the craft of writing affects University of California graduates. “Shadowing,” the music for this episode, was provided by Corbyn Kites, via the audio library in YouTube Studio.

Chapter 4: Advise to Young Clinicians and Fellow Patients6. Conclusion=== Learning Points ===Lifestyle modifications need to be tailored to the patient. This often involves starting with a careful dietary and activity history and helping the patient incorporate small, healthy changes that are congruent with their cultural backgroundThere are multiple medications available for weight loss and selecting the right one requires knowledge of a patient's comorbid health conditions, as well as taking into account their personal preference. Side-effects tolerance cost, and or insurance coverageRecognize how to counsel patients on when it may be appropriate to pursue bariatric surgery and what they can expect following the procedure. The most important step in helping patients manage obesity is by starting the conversation and letting patients know that you are there to support them along every step of the way.=== Our Expert(s) ===Dr. Jorge O. In this episode, Dr. Vasudevan and Dr. Moreno unpack our patient's experience with weight and how it's impacted his life.Share your reactions and questions with us at Speak Pipe . We might feature you on a future episode!=== Outline ===1. Introduction2. Chapter 1: Personal Relationship to Weight3. Chapter 2: Impact of Weight on Mental Health4. Chapter 3: Relationship with PCP5. Conclusion=== Learning Points ===Commonly used measures of obesity include BMI and waist circumference. These measures are imperfect, since they are attempting to quantify adiposity. Patients often undergo an emotional journey that is related to their weight. Many patients prefer to move towards tangible end goals such as increased mobility, lowered risk for future adverse health events, or other factors rather than a specific weight, BMI, or waist circumference.Screening and treatment of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression can be instrumental in the care of patients who have elevated BMI. Be sure to ask permission to discuss the patient's weight before jumping in. Set SMART goals with your patients and set expectations early.=== Our Expert(s) ===Dr. Jorge O. Our first episode explores how our patient, TJ, developed an opioid use disorder, and the steps providers need to take in order to diagnose the disease. Share your reactions and questions with us at Speak Pipe . We might feature you on a future episode!=== Outline ===1. Introduction: 0:002. Chapter 1 - First experience with Opioids: 4:233. Chapter 2 - Transition to OUD/Taking a History and Physical: 10:114. Chapter 3 - Neurobiology of OUD: 22:235. Chapter 4 - Opioid Dependence and Withdrawal: 27:006. Conclusion: 35:07=== Learning Points ===Remember to use the 3 C's: control, craving, and consequences when meeting a patient with potential OUD for the first time. Use the DSM-V criteria to quantify the severityStay away from language such as opioid abuse and instead use patient-centered language such as opioid use disorder or substance use disorder. Instead of clean urine, say negative urine drug screen. A history and physical are key parts of the evaluation for a patient with OUD, looking for signs of recent use, complications of use (such as infections) or signs of withdrawal. It is essential to the safety and well-being of our patients that we promptly treat the symptoms of opioid withdrawal, as this can lead to using a batch of opioids that could cause overdose.=== Our Expert(s) ===Dr. Carolyn Chan is an academic hospitalist at Yale New-Haven Hospital with interests in medical humanities, quality improvement, and addiction medicine. What's the big picture? Investors in the Philippines can enjoy income tax holidays of up to six years. After that, they are allowed to pay only a special 5% tax on gross income earned (GIE) indefinitely, instead of the full 30% income tax paid by everyone else. Why it matters: Income tax breaks enjoyed by investors result in billions of foregone government revenues. These funds could have been collected and better spent on health, education and poverty reduction. What are the facts? In 2018 alone, foregone revenues reached almost P70 billion due to the 5% special tax. This was more than the P53-billion budget of the Department of Agriculture for the same year. The bottomline: A new bill intends to curtail the special 5% tax on gross income earned, a move resisted by officials of investment promotion agencies including the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, who fear that it will drive away foreign investors. Dig deeper: Read the full story here. CONTENT WARNING: The following episode includes discussion of physical and sexual abuse, including the abuse of children. Listener discretion is advised. In this flashback bonus episode first released as a Patreon bonus episode in August 2018 originally entitled "Abuse: Endorsed by Scripture?," Jaye discusses the use of Romans 13:1-5, a passage in the Bible invoked by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the White House Press Secretary at the time, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, to justify the separation and detainment of families seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border. What does this Bible passage really mean - in a historical and contemporary context - if Sessions and Sanders are correct? Jaye outlines the danger of using religious passages to justify oppressive government actions. This episode also includes fresh new commentary that frames this episode in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests.
