The Analogues, a renowned Dutch tribute band, specializes in faithfully recreating the Beatles' later studio albums live on stage. Unlike many tribute bands, they focus on full-album performances, using vintage instruments and orchestral arrangements to capture every detail of the originals. The band's passion for precision has earned them praise from Beatles fans worldwide, offering a unique live experience of albums that were never performed by the Beatles themselves.

PHILIP SCHAFFRIN: FOUNDER OF THE FAB LADS The Fab Lads as a concept goes back nearly a decade as members of the Lonesome Hearts band discussed the idea of forming a Beatles Tribute band.  Plans began to firm up in 2021 and finally came together in 2022 as they played their initial shows. Through each of the member's musical abilities The Fab Lads are able to take you on a Magical Musical Tour of the various eras of the Beatles; from the Cool Cavern Club Days to the Hot Nights in Hamburg; from the Screaming Concert Era to the Psychedelic Experimentalism Sgt. Pepper; from the Colorful Fun of Yellow Submarine to the Gritty Realism of the Rooftop Concert. Through the use of period appropriate costumes, vintage instruments and amplifiers, as well as multiple multi-media presentations, the Fab Lads bring the bygone days of the Beatles to life for your enjoyment.

If there was any inclination the Fab Four were down to “expand their minds,” by the time Revolver came around, there was very little second guessing. The sounds are out there, backwards, mystical. And on "Dr. Robert," what might have been a nudge and wink previously is now just a punch in the face: THESE GUYS TAKE DRUGS. Whether it's autobiographical or a character piece though, it's a fantastic mind movie, where the band paint a great picture sonically of the good Doctor, while John's vocal moves to almost Dylan-esque places. On an album wherein the band is really starting to use the studio as an instrument, “Dr. Robert” holds its' own as a great live band performance, especially with John and Paul's fantastic vocals being recorded together. Sonically, this is maybe the song that exemplifies to me the brilliance of the sound of the Revolver album, chiming Epiphone Casinos and Vox Amps, thumping Rickenbacker bass. It's maybe my favorite SOUNDING Beatles album, and this is one of my favorite sounding moments. It's not a major player in the overall arc of the catalog, but it's a good one for sure. Joining us this week is Emmy and Golden Globe nominated screenwriter, producer, and author Bruce Ferber. While his biggest credits include some truly classic sitcoms like Home Improvement, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Bosom Buddies, Coach, and Growing Pains, these days he's turned his pen towards writing award winning novels. His current book is I Buried Paul, a story of a man who plays Paul McCartney in a Beatles Tribute band. It's a self-described love letter to the power of music, and an exploration of the sacrifices its disciples are willing to make in service to its' magic. We chat with Bruce about just what drove him to dive into the world of Beatles Tribute acts, learning to be open to change, the REAL Dr. Robert, and what may be the greatest Beatles Tribute band of all time. Get yourself a copy of I Buried Paul at bruceferber.net, or anywhere you buy good books! P.S. - This was recorded prior to the announcement of the upcoming Revolver box set reissue. Ranking The Beatles

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2021 94:48

The Beatles 3rd single, and their first bonafide #1 hit, is a sub-2 minute blast of all the early hallmarks of early Beatlemania: John & Paul singing together, a super catchy hook, and chord progressions more complex than just about any of their peers were pulling off. And of course, a mop-shaking "wooooo!" The band always viewed this song as a major leap in their songwriting ability and quality, and in learning how to add in complex changes and arrangements, an early and encouraging signal to them that they aren't bound by conventional means of thinking...about anything.  Joining us this week is our old pal David Pomerleau, who you may have met on our 3rd episode. He's the bassist for mainstay New Orleans rock/funk band Johnny Sketch & The Dirty Notes, as well as Jonathan's bandmate in The Walrus - A New Orleans Beatles Tribute. After quarantine shut down their original bands, David and Jonathan found themselves picking up more Walrus work than ever, as socially distant porch concerts became the only outlet for live music in New Orleans. A band that played maybe 4 shows a year started playing at least 4 shows a month, for pretty much a whole year. So now, after a year diving deeper into Beatles music, we talk about what's changed in how they view and appreciate Beatles music, and what it's like playing in a (no-costumes) Beatles tribute band. We also discuss working with changing voices, finding new paths as songwriters and performers, pilot koala bears, and silly Beatles trivia. Follow David's musical projects Johnny Sketch & The Dirty Notes (facebook) and The Walrus (instagram @WalrusNOLA) for livestream performances and more! What do you think? Too high? To low? Ranking The Beatles

Written in Feb 1963 just after their marathon recording session for the Please Please Me album, "Thank You Girl" started it's life as the Beatles' attempt at their next single, another early example of tunes John and Paul wrote together sitting eye-to-eye. By the time they hit studio to record it, it'd become the b-side of "From Me To You," but it found a home in their live set for a little while and on some BBC sessions. It's a track that finds the band continuing to learn who they are and what they can do, finding that "Beatles sound" but still giving nods to their heroes like Buddy Holly. This week, we're joined by the world's youngest Beatles tribute band, The Sunset Four. Hailing from Miami Beach, this foursome has been wowing Miami crowds of all ages for 3 years now, which is wild considering they started when they 9. As a lifelong musician, it's really interesting to hear what young up-and-coming musicians think about Beatles music in 2021....on one hand, it seems a million miles away from my time...and other the other it's maybe not that different. You can follow them on Instagram @thesunsetfour and on Facebook as well. What do you think? Too high? To low? Or just right, like Baby Bear's porridge? Welcome to another episode of Something came from Baltimore, I am your host Tom Gouker and on the phone is one of favorite guitarist of all time, Al De Meola. The interview was during the Covic- 19 pandemic and Al just released a wondering collection of Beatles songs called, “ Across the Universe” which is a perfect companion during this stressful time period that we are facing. This is the second set of Beatles songs, he released first collection in 2013 called, “In My life – a Beatles Tribute recorded in Abbey Road”. AL was bummed out that he had to cancel his year of touring and he is just riding out at home. Just to let you know that I am a big fan of Al De Meola and I was excited to finally speak with him and this album is amazing. Everyone knows Al right? Amazing world music guitarist, there is nothing he can not do. They rescheduled the interview three times and then there was notice that it would never happen, and then I was told that I would only have 20 minutes which was not enough time in my mind. We ended up chatting for 50 minutes and I would love to release the whole interview. Drop me a line, and let me know if you what to hear the whole thing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltimore/message

Welcome back to Beatles Month!   Today we have the distinct pleasure of talking with not one but four Beatles experts! Mike Muratore, Frank Muratore, John Auker and Patrick Gannon, the members of Hard Day’s Night.   Hard Day’s Night is rated among the top national Beatles tribute groups performing today, a full catalogue touring Beatles Tribute act focusing on performing songs exactly as the Beatles themselves did. The band has performed on national television, at America’s top Beatles festival, and at the Beatles’ own Cavern Club in Liverpool, England.   We were eager to find out what goes into being one of the top Beatles tribute acts in the world and how the four members of the group think about the musicality of the Beatles.   We talk about: • What exactly the band would do to learn a new Beatles song note-perfect • How performing as the Beatles compares to playing in a non-tribute band • And we ask, as four people who've studied and played the songs of the Beatles more carefully than almost anyone - why do they think the Beatles have had such a lasting impact over time? It was really cool to hear about how each member of the group came to love the Beatles and perform in Hard Day’s Night, and how thoughtfully and carefully they approach their work in performing as the Fab Four. There’s a lot to be learned here about musicianship that goes way beyond tribute bands or Beatles specifics - so please enjoy!   This is The Musicality Podcast, and you’re tuned in to Beatles Month at Musical U.       Subscribe For Future Episodes!
