Abner Haynes was dealing with racism in sports most of his life growing up in North Texas where he broke the color barrier at North Texas State University and then organized a player boycott of the AFL All Star game in 1965 when he had had enough of unequal treatment for Black players. And he had the clout to do it. Haynes earned Rookie of the Year honors with the AFL's Dallas Texans in 1960, leading the league in rushing with 875 yards. Haynes would go on to set AFL records for TDs in a game (5), TDs in a season (19) and career TDs (46). Following the boycott, the Chiefs let him go, and he spent one season rushing for the Denver Broncos (1965-1966). Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode 292 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block on some of professional football's best postseason games of all time.In this episode we're discussing the 1962 AFL Championship between the Houston Oilers and the Dallas Texans. In a matchup between the upstart AFL's best teams of 1962, this game did not disappoint.Houston was going for a third straight AFL title, and the talented Texans were playing their final game before moving to Kansas City to become the Chiefs.Dallas raced to a 17-0 lead at halftime thanks to some spectacular plays by running back Abner Haynes and two interceptions off of George Blanda by the Texans' defense. As champions always seem to do, Houston fought their way back into the game in the second half. Thanks to touchdowns by Willard Dewveall and Charlie Tolar, sandwiching a Blanda field goal, Houston tied the game at 17 and it went to overtime.Haynes made an incredible blunder after Dallas won the toss when he told officials, “We'll Kick to the Clock.” Dallas was not only forced to kick off in sudden death, but their offense had to go into the wind.Luckily for the Texans, they mounted a drive late in the first overtime period after a Bill Hull interception, and were able to drive with the wind in the second overtime period.Tommy Brooker nailed a 25-yard field goal 2:54 into the second overtime period to give Dallas the win, 20-17, and the AFL title.Connect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedyDominic DiTolla: @ditolladominicProducer: @ty_englestudioInstagram: @thesportsexperiencepodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please help support us @:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast #houstonoilers#dallastexans#afl#tennesseetitans#kansascitychiefs
The tale of perseverance and triumph we recount today centers upon the remarkable journey of Len Dawson, a quarterback who, after facing multiple rejections from prominent NFL teams, ultimately found his calling in the nascent American Football League. Dawson's narrative epitomizes the essence of resilience, as he transformed initial failures into a storied career, culminating in championship victories and a revered legacy in football history. He embarked on his professional journey with the Dallas Texans, a team that emerged as a formidable force under his leadership, ultimately securing their place in the annals of the sport. The culmination of his efforts was marked by his pivotal role in Super Bowl IV, where he not only led his team to victory but was also distinguished as the game's Most Valuable Player. Through this episode, I aim to illuminate the indomitable spirit of a man who, against all odds, rose to greatness and forever altered the landscape of American football.Join us at the Pigskin Dispatch website and the Sports Jersey Dispatch to see even more Positive football news! Norm discusses the origin of pro football in Dallas, and how it ties into the Dallas Cowboys!
In the 1940s and into the 1950s, the NFL had a troubled franchise. Originally known as the Boston Yanks, the team played in Boston (with a slight detour in 1945) from 1944 through 1948. They relocated to New York for the 1949 season and renamed themselves the New York Bulldogs. In 1950, they called themselves the Yanks and after the 1951 season, they called it quits. Now, the NFL could not move forward with an odd number of teams. So, they found themselves a buyer and took a chance on an entirely new region of the country, the Southwest. A hotbed for college football, the NFL thought it was a no-brainer. So, the Yanks moved to Dallas and became the Dallas Texans where they would play in the 75,000-seat Cotton Bowl. Well, it didn't go well. The first-ever game attracted just under 18,000 fans. They never reached that number again. Professional football in Dallas - at that time - was a colossal failure. In fact, it was so bad, the Texans didn't finish the season in Dallas. After four home games they had to relocate, and I get into that fiasco, among many other incredible and fascinating stories about this doomed franchise with my special guest, Mike Cobern. Mike stumbled across the Texans story and decided to dig deeper. In the end, Mike took all the information he could find, conducted some terrific interviews and authored a terrific book, "“Wards of the League, The Untold story of the first NFL team in Dallas,” which is due to hit the book stores this summer (July 2024). On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, we take a look back at an incredible story of an NFL team that so many - even in Dallas - have never heard about and why it was doomed before the team ever played its first game.
11-25-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program talking about the biggest rivalries in the world of sport. He then talks about some of the best players/ coaches to never win a championship in their respective sport. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about the NFL's Dallas Texans, not the Kansas City Chiefs, and a little historical value about the head coach of the 1952 team. John then talks about the second NBA player to ever reach 15,000 career points. Who was the first to reach? John then talks about the first broadcast of the best ever play by play/ analyst combination. John also mentions a four (4) time Hart Trophy winner, Joe DiMaggio, Lenny Moore, Joe Gibbs, and Cris Carter. Finally, John goes off on Kenesaw Mountain Landis and why MLB cannot talk about its “character clause” while remembering one of the greatest world soccer players to ever play the game.

MacCambridge recounts how a strong rebuff from the stodgy 1950s NFL establishment galvanized Hunt's determination to disrupt the football status quo, how the AFL's “Foolish Club” of owners persevered through staggering financial losses, how Kansas City mayor Harold Roe “Chief” Bartle wooed Hunt and his flailing Dallas Texans franchise to the City of Fountains, and the karmic irony of the AFL Chiefs' victory over Max Winter's NFL Minnesota Vikings in the final AFL-NFL Super Bowl (IV) in 1970. + + + SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.royalretros.com/?aff=2 BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: Lamar Hunt: A Life in Sports (2012): https://amzn.to/3T0FL7G FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

The 1952 Dallas Texans lasted only one season but were the first NFL team based in Dallas. They are often confused with Lamar Hunt's Dallas Texans which later became the Kansas City Chiefs. Author Mike Cobern tells the story of the 1952 Texans, a forgotten team unknown to most football fans. The Texas Sports Hall of Fame Podcast is sponsored by TownePlace Suites, Waco Northeast. Bill Mercer is the original announcer for the Texas Ranger. He also called games for the original Dallas Texans in the old AFL which eventually became the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Dallas Cowboys, including the Cowboy's first Super Bowl. Bill shares behind-the-scenes stories from the earliest days of the Texas sports world. You'll hear Bill talk about what it was like to announce the historic Cowboys/Packers "Ice Bowl" in 1967 in Green Bay where it was 30 below zero. It was so cold the inside of the glass in the press box was iced over and they couldn't see the field. You'll love hearing Bill recount one of the greatest football games of all time as he shares what he did to not lose focus on the game. Bill even announced wrestling matches at the historic Dallas Sportatorium. He talks about how he was hired to announce the matches on KRLD TV even though he had no experience with wrestling. Bill is very honest and transparent about how nervous he was to take on this gig. It eventually became a big part of his life. One of the biggest events in Bill's life happened at 12 Noon on Nov. 22nd in 1963. He was doing the local "Noon News" when President Kennedy was shot and killed. Bill was assigned to go to Dallas police station to do one of the nation's very first live broadcasts. He was there as Lee Harvey Oswald was brought into the station. At 1 o'clock in the morning, the police decided to do a press conference with Lee Harvey Oswald. It was here that Oswald heard for the very first time, from Bill Mercer, that he was being charged with the murder of the President of the United States. You'll even hear Bill Mercer discuss his insight on the theories that Oswald didn't act alone. He shared an incredible recounting of Oswald's actions following the assassination of Kennedy. From Oklahoma to Okinawa: 18K Miles on the LCI(G) 439: A Signalman's WWII Naval Memoir is a book Bill Mercer just released that was a fulfillment of a promise he made to his shipmates who wanted him to write about their experience in Okinawa Japan from 1943 to 1947. Yes indeed, Charm City has been blessed and cursed by the mythical professional football gods and now stands with one of the model franchises in the National Football League. It all began in 1947 when the Miami Seahawks of the All-American Football Conference folded, and a syndicate scrounged up enough money to bring them to Baltimore. After three seasons, the first iteration of the Baltimore Colts entered the NFL with the other remnants of the AAFC, only to fold after the 1950 season. The city proved they were not done with pro football when presented with the opportunity to be awarded the failed Dallas Texans franchise if they could sell 15,000 season tickets during the Christmas season. Mission accomplished, and the Baltimore Colts were reborn for 1953....... https://sportshistorynetwork.com/football/nfl/baltimore-football-history (READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE) Get ahttps://www.newspapers.com/freetrial/?xid=2229&duration=semiannual&subtype=extra&ft=true ( 1-week free trial )and learn about this week's topic from first-hand accounts at Newspapers.com. In 1953, the city of Baltimore was awarded a new National Football League franchise. The team was nicknamed the Colts, the second pro football club to bear that name in a seven-year period. Earlier in 1947, a Baltimore Colts team was founded in the All-America Football Conference. Three years later, as part of the peace agreement between the AAFC and NFL, the Colts became an NFL member. But this venture failed and the franchise was disbanded after the 1950 season. However, Baltimore was presented with a second chance for an NFL team three seasons later when the Dallas Texans franchise was cancelled by the league. NFL Commissioner Bert Bell challenged the city to sell 15,000 season tickets within six weeks. The successful sale took just over four weeks and, on January 23, 1953, Carroll Rosenbloom became the principal owner of the new Baltimore Colts. In 1954, Weeb Ewbank was named the Colts' head coach and he began a steady building program that put his team over .500 for the first time in 1957. The Colts didn't have another losing season for the next 14 years. Powered by a sensational young quarterback, Johnny Unitas, and a strong supporting cast that included such future Pro Football Hall of Famers as Artie Donovan, Gino Marchetti, Raymond Berry, Lenny Moore and Jim Parker, the Colts won NFL championships in both 1958 and 1959 and again in 1968. The 1958 NFL title clash against the New York Giants, played before the largest television audience ever up to that time, did much to increase fan enthusiasm for pro football. With Unitas craftily engineering long drives that led to the tying field goal and winning touchdown, the Colts won 23-17 in overtime. Both the Colts and Ewbank were involved in a second game 10 years later that would share ranking as a pivotal game in creating far-reaching fan enthusiasm. The game was Super Bowl III and the Ewbank-led New York Jets stunned the heavily-favored Colts 16-7. Under Don Shula, who replaced Ewbank in 1963, the Colts won NFL Western conference championships in 1964 and 1968. Shula moved to Miami in 1970 but the Colts, who had moved to the new American Football Conference at the time of the merger, won the first AFC Eastern division title and Super Bowl V. Robert Irsay, who acquired the Los Angeles Rams franchise in 1972, engineered an historic trade of teams with Carroll Rosenbloom that year. Twelve years later on March 28, 1984, Irsay moved the Colts to Indianapolis, where they now play in Lucas Oil Stadium.

We consult a higher authority this week to help us dig into the story of the NFL's former Houston Oilers - one of the American Football League's founding franchises in 1960, and the predecessor to today's Nashville-based Tennessee Titans. Before decamping for divinity school in the late 1990s and a second career as a vicar in the US Anglican church, Fr. Ed Fowler ("Loser Takes All: Bud Adams, Bad Football & Big Business") spent over 30 years as both a writer and columnist for sports sections at major newspapers such as the Austin American-Statesman, Kansas City Star, Chicago Daily News, and finally, the Houston Chronicle - where he spilled plenty of ink on the trials and tribulations of Houston's first professional football team. The Oilers were owned throughout their existence by Houston oil industry entrepreneur Bud Adams - and dominated the AFL's early years by winning titles in 1960 and 1961, and barely missing out on a third (a double-OT loss to the Dallas Texans in the 1962 AFL Championship Game). Post-merger, the Oilers spent the bulk of the '70s as NFL also-rans until the coach "Bum" Phillips-led "Luv Ya Blue" era (1978-80), that netted two straight (though losing) AFC Championship Game appearances and featured stars like Elvin Bethea, Billy "White Shoes" Johnson and rookie RB sensation Earl Campbell. Though the team consistently made the playoffs from 1987-93 behind the QB wizardry of CFL star Warren Moon, the Oilers posted losing records in virtually every season otherwise. Adams, who first threatened to move the team in the late 1980s, followed through at the end of the 1996 season and relocated the Oilers to Tennessee - where they became the "Tennessee Oilers" for the 1997 (Memphis) and 1998 (Vanderbilt Stadium) seasons, before permanently converting to the "Titans" in 1999. The Titans retained the team's previous history and records, and the Oilers name was officially retired by then-league Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, preventing the name from ever returning. The NFL would return to Houston just three years later with a new franchise, the Texans.

As the first African American player to be drafted by the NFL and the first African American to play quarterback, George Taliaferro was a trailblazer whose athletic prowess earned him accolades throughout his football career. Instrumental in leading Indiana University to an undefeated season and undisputed Big Ten championship in 1945, Taliaferro was a star when many major universities had no black players on their rosters and others were stacking black players behind white starters. George Taliaferro would later rack up impressive statistics while playing professionally for the New York Yanks, Dallas Texans, Baltimore Colts, and Philadelphia Eagles. His athletic prowess did little to prevent him from facing segregation and discrimination on a daily basis, but his popularity as an athlete also gave him a platform. Playing professionally gave Taliaferro more opportunity to use football to fight oppression and to interact with other important trailblazers, like Joe Louis, Nat King Cole, Muhammad Ali, and Congressman John Lewis. Race and Football in America tells Taliaferro's story and profiles the experiences of other athletes of color who were recognized for their athleticism yet oppressed for their skin color, as they fought (and continue to fight) for equal rights and opportunities. Together these stories provide an insightful portrait of race in America. 2:12 - Who is Dawn Knight and who was her mentor(s)? 7:45 - What were the trials and tribulations for George Taliaferro during his 4 years at Indiana University, a segregated school? 10:39 - How did you come to meet George Taliaferro? 14:41 - May our complacency disturb us profoundly 18:54 - What are difference bwtween social change and platforms back then vs now? 25:13 - Why name the book "Race and Football in America" instead of just the George Taliaferro story? 28:09 - What are some of the most important topics in relation to race? 31:02 - What are some of the issues that still exist? 34:17 - How did George Taliaferro dedicate himself to the way he thought? 36:36 - What is the greatest thing to have happend to you after you wrote this book? 39:08 - Knowledge through the decades - What was the attitude lesson when you were a newborn? 40:11 - What was the attitude lesson when you were 10? 43:45 - What was the attitude lesson when you were 30? 45:08 - What was the attitude lesson when you were 40? 46:18 - Show close NEED MORE ATTITUDE? Those logos are examined and rated. Ryan also looks at the Penguins' chances of making the playoffs this season. A similar look is given to the Winnipeg Jets whose defense group looks like a shell of itself from one season ago. Finally it's capped off with predictions!Dallas will use a Dallas Texans inspired logo that features a large D with Stars going through the middle of it for the Winter Classic. The A in Stars is replaced by a traditional looking star shape. The big thing to notice on this logo was the use of faux stitching, which has peaked our interest in what the jerseys will look like!Ryan's rating: 8.5 / 10 The Nashville Predators logo will actually appear on the shoulder of their jerseys. Based on where the event logo typically is located, we would expect to only see one of these logos on the jerseys. Also released, but without any fanfare, was the script logo the Preds will use. It appears to be based on the Dixie Flyers' old script, which would lead us to believe the Preds will wear Dixie Flyers throwbacks.Ryan's rating: 7.5 / 10Throwback Throwdown is a fight between Sharks and Coyotes! The 1992 Sharks teal jersey defends the crown against the 2001 Phoenix Coyotes kachina jersey! The listeners have voted. Landon Donovan, the reigning all time leader in both goals scored and assists created, the man who Major League Soccer's MVP Trophy is named after, recent San Diego transplant and even more recent FS Investor joins Dike Anyiwo for a candid discussion regarding the current status of youth soccer in San Diego and how that status may or may not change with the arrival of an MLS team. Thursday's news that the lawsuit against the MLS Player's Union by youth clubs Crossfire Premier, the Dallas Texans and the Chicago Sockers has been dismissed is just the latest data-point in an ongoing struggle for American youth clubs to be allowed to receive reimbursement for the development of players in the form of Solidarity Payments and Training Compensation fees. Donovan and Dike wade into the weeds on the subject of monetary compensation for youth clubs for developing youth players who go on to become professionals, and examine whether or not the widely accepted practice around the world has a place in the United States. The two then wrap up with a summary of where the SoccerCitySD project stands at present, including a frank discussion of why San Diego State and FS Investors appear to be at an impasse when it comes to negotiations over the development of Mission Valley, the merits of the Public Land, Public Vote campaign and concluding with a preview of what citizens of San Diego can expect to see from FS Investors in the weeks and months to come now that the signature gathering process is complete. Sports author/historian Michael MacCambridge (America’s Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured a Nation; Lamar Hunt: A Life in Sports) joins Tim Hanlon to discuss the legacy of Lamar Hunt – the most unlikely of sports executive pioneers – and the outsized role he played in modernizing 1960s pro football into the enduring American sports juggernaut it is today. MacCambridge recounts how a strong rebuff from the stodgy 1950s NFL establishment galvanized Hunt’s determination to disrupt the football status quo, how the AFL’s “Foolish Club” of owners persevered through staggering financial losses, how Kansas City mayor Harold Roe “Chief” Bartle wooed Hunt and his flailing Dallas Texans franchise to the City of Fountains, and the karmic irony of the AFL Chiefs’ victory over Max Winter’s NFL Minnesota Vikings in the final AFL-NFL Super Bowl (IV) in 1970.
