"The desert adds an incredible layer of realism that you're never gonna get in any polished one hour experience." You've been driving through the desert for miles. It's nighttime, and you've seen nothing but scrub brush and rocks for a while. Suddenly, emerging from the darkness is the glimmer of lights… neon lights, and as you get closer you hear the thunderous pounding of music. People in funky lit-up outfits are running around in this vibrant neon construction. You sigh as you settle into this post-apocalyptic city that you will call home for the next 5 days. It's difficult to convey the scope of a fully immersive event that spans 5 days and is chock full of missions, tribal allegiances, subcultures, music, and mayhem. Wasteland Weekend and Neotropolis are multi-day, larp-esque, dystopian-themed immersive festivals taking place in the barren wasteland of the Mojave Desert in California. Jared Butler is the mastermind behind these events. He joins us to break down how it all works. It was fascinating to hear about the logistics of running such a complex event. However, what struck me most during this interview was not the commitment to immersion, which is enforced by required in-world costumes, nor the scope, which includes missions, art pieces, performances, and a cohesive narrative. Rather, I was really impressed with the dedication to creating an open and welcoming community. Jared's insistence on keeping his events an inviting and collaborative place to play is apparent, and I could feel how it trickles down through the culture of these events. Wasteland Weekend and Neotropolis are can't-miss experiences if you're looking to delve deeper into immersive play. On this episode of Environment in Context, Huma Gupta and Danya al-Saleh speak to Nadia Christidi, a PhD candidate in History, Anthropology, and Science, Technology, and Society at MIT and an arts practitioner. Her dissertation research explores how cities that face water supply challenges, which are expected to intensify with climate change, are imagining, planning, and preparing for the future of water; the cities she focuses on are Los Angeles, Dubai, and Cape Town. How do we imagine, think about, and represent environmental crises around water and climate change? Water management and climate change have previously been considered the exclusive purview of environmental scientists, engineers, economists, security analysts, or policymakers. However, Nadia Christidi explains how an anthropological approach can help us understand the political practices and economic rationalities of water governance based on her fieldwork in Dubai. Specifically, we discuss how these ecological imaginaries around water are conditioned by social and political forces, ranging from considering water to be an infinite resource, a commodity that is produced, or an extreme landscape that serves as a testbed for technological innovation. Falconer is a Swedish folk/power metal band that I have always had mixed feelings about. Some of their albums seem very good to me while other albums have fell short of any expectations I may of had. In other words they are very hit or miss in my opinion. Before listening to this new album my favorite Falconer album was their 2008 CD titled Among Beggars and Thieves. Once I finished listening to this new album three times in a row, I decided that From A Dying Ember would dethrone my now 2nd favorite. Right from the start we are introduced with a burst of sound as the first song begins. "Kings and Queens" is the bait around the hook for any listener as it will reel you in and keep you listening. I have always admired Falconer's style of folk metal blended with power metal. It is the perfect combination of music that will make you bang your head while thinking of medieval times. The next track is "Desert Dreams" which was the first single from this record. After a strong lead guitar riff by Jimmy Hedlend, vocalist Mathias Blad shows off his unique singing talent. His voice is both calm but with a fast paced rhythm that fits seamlessly with the tempo change. My personal favorite song on this album is the third song called "Redeem and Repent". It begins with a groovy riff by Stefan Weinerhall followed by a bombardment of very catch lyrics. By your 2nd listen you will know most of the song by heart and your favorite part of the song will be after the 30 second mark. You know the part. The part where most of the music stops except for the slow plucking of an acoustic guitar and Mathias says the following ... "The scepter is stolen by a jester and the king's called beware of his temper beware of his pride. Wise men bang their heads against the wall, hear the sinister call". I also loved the deeper lyrics "... As the children play chess with the world". This song also has a guitar solo that has a sound that will get stuck in your head. Next we have the album's only song sang in the band's Swedish tongue. This is the only issue I have with the album as that there wasn't enough songs like this. In previous albums they would often have a few songs sang in a foreign language. The song is called "Bland Sump Och Dy". This song also starts off with a bass line played by Magnus Linhardt. "A Fool's Crusade" is the 5th track and this is when the album gets softer in tone but still hits you in the soul. "Garnets and a Gilded Rose" is a brief instrumental before continuing with another groovy tune titled "In Regal Attire". It begins with some flutes before chugging guitars and another catchy course. "Rejoice the Adorned" is the slowest and most calm song on the entire album as it only features Mathias' voice and a piano. Its still a good song despite drummer Karsten Larsson and the rest of the band being absent on this one. The whole band returns for the 9th track that is the most upbeat and my 2nd favorite song on the album "Testify". It is by far the most lyrically catchy song and you'll be trying to singing along before the song is over. Its songs like this that make me with this amazing power metal act would continue. Unfortunately that isn't the case. The band split up for good after recording From A Dying Ember. Track 10 is "Thrust The Dagger Deep" and its another sing along that midway through the song has an unusual instrument for this genre. There is a part with a steel guitar that gives it a slight country element to the overall sound. The final song is "Rapture" and it is a great way to end the last record of a 21 year musical career since 1999. With that being said, I rate Falconer - From A Dying Ember as their best work and I will award it with a well deserved 9.5/10 score.

This episode is about 'Grandfather Medicine,' Peyote. It's truly is a mysterious and beautiful plant, and a ceremonial tradition that must be experienced to understand fully. Peyote's healing power is immense, and in many ways, beyond the scope of words. But if anyone can express its healing potential and rich traditional history, it's today's guests. They have requested anonymity due to this episode's legally sensitive nature, but their expertise is beyond question and deeply inspiring. This episode was recorded on location in the desert on the morning after a peyote ceremony I had participated in, while I was very much under the spell of this mysterious medicine. I sat down with our guest couple to discuss in great detail their magical lives as ceremony facilitators and the epic tales of all-things Peyote — including my personal experiences with them, which as of now, total six. These are two of the most inspiring people I have ever met, and to watch them work together so powerfully in unity during ceremonies has been incredibly transformative. I will never be the same after meeting them. As per all episodes that focus on the use of plant medicines or psychedelics, I feel obliged to issue the following disclaimer: These experiences are not for everyone, at all times, nor am I promoting them as such. I am merely documenting my journey and curiosity to learn more, further expand my spiritual awareness, and deepen my healing. One must give careful consideration to set, setting, and personal motives (and the motives of those facilitating such explorations) before venturing into the life-altering world of any such potent medicine. That said, when used wisely, intentionally, and with reverence and respect, substances like Peyote have the potential to heal the minds and hearts of not only individuals but also humankind collectively. And lord knows we could use some of that. 09:28 — How they met Having a shared interest in plant medicine Wanting to be around each others energy Traveling together through lifetimes Opening your heart 18:43 — Their first experience with entheogens Starting casually Interests in anthropology and studying cultures Discovering how peyote can be so healing Going to the desert every year Becoming part of the community The ceremony of Merakame 28:08 — The history and lineage of peyote How long peyote has been in use The native areas that used peyote Showing respect to heritage The active ingredients in peyote The perfection of nature Opening doors in our hearts 38:19 — Learning about the sacred plants Studying with indigenous elders Giving yourself to the path Spending time in native communities Receiving the teaching from the plants Letting go of untruth 43:10 — Cultural appropriation The intention behind it Losing sight of what’s sacred Making commitments to ourselves Sharing something sacred Valuing people’s traditions 57:27 — What the ceremony is about Luke’s experience with the ceremony Letting go what’s inside of us What the medicine does for our body 01:06:25 — The foundation Giving tools to connect to the elements Knowing how to creating a relationship with the earth Giving a fair exchange The Boa Foundation 01:12:39 — Harvesting the medicine Preparing yearly to go into the desert The ancient tradition of the pilgrimage Sustainably harvesting for the future The process of preservation, care, and transportation 01:20:14 — Moments of healing A man whose prayers were answered Meeting a soulmate Reconnecting with ancestors and loved ones Seeing miraculous things constantly 01:26:21 — The challenges of the ceremony Struggling with sleep deprivation and the reasons for it Having the discipline to see it through Transcending physical limitations 01:39:19 — Human sexuality and monogamy Wasting our sexual energy Relationships as a mirror into ourselves The practice of sacred sex The difference between love and lust 01:45:02 — Their amazing cat What breed is this magnificent creature? March 6, 2013 Dick Wagner’s songs and lead guitar have been featured on more than 200 renowned albums, garnering more than 35 Platinum and Gold records, BMI songwriter awards, Emmys, and numerous prestigious international awards. The Detroit area native helped define an era in rock history by playing lead guitar or writing songs for Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Kiss, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Meat Loaf, Steve Perry, Etta James, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Air Supply, Hall & Oates, Ringo Starr, Guns & Roses, Tori Amos, Frank Sinatra, and dozens of others. Legendary for his groundbreaking collaborations with Alice Cooper, Wagner was musical director, lead guitarist and co-writer of the icon’s biggest hits, including Only Women Bleed, You and Me, and Welcome To My Nightmare. Wagner was Cooper’s right hand man on such groundbreaking albums as, Welcome to My Nightmare, Alice Cooper Goes to Hell, Lace and Whiskey, From the Inside, and DaDa. Together, Cooper and Wagner co-wrote the majority of Alice Cooper’s top selling singles and albums, including more than 50 songs featured on 57 Alice Cooper albums released worldwide. As a teenage musician living an hour north of Detroit Michigan, Dick Wagner enjoyed his first taste of “big time show biz,” when he was asked to play guitar as backup for some of his musical heroes, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Little Richard. Great balls of fire! The Michigan public first took notice of Wagner’s talent in 1964, when he formed the band The Bossmen, whose songs likeBaby Boy were #1 radio favorites in Michigan. Soon Wagner was writing and producing for other Michigan bands. In the late 1960s, as Wagner’s work became more complex and featured a harder edge, he formed the wildly popular band, The Frost, recording three Billboard charted albums and drawing enthusiastic crowds to hear songs likeMystery Man and Rock N’ Roll Music. Wagner moved to New York to form Ursa Major, a seminal rock band and power trio that recorded one, self-titled, defining album for RCA. The raw musical power and artistry of Ursa Major inspired a generation of rock musicians and remains an influential album for today’s musicians. Little known factoid: the original Ursa Major lineup included Wagner on guitar and Billy Joel on keyboards, but dramas in Billy’s personal life intervened and he left the band. Wagner’s guitar virtuosity captured the attention of Lou Reed, and he was invited to play on Lou’s European Berlin tour in 1973. Wagner assembled a powerhouse band including Steve Hunter and Wagner on dueling lead guitars, Prakash John on bass, Pentti Glan on drums and Ray Colcord on keyboards. The live album, Rock N’ Roll Animal, recorded at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, remains one of the most celebrated and influential guitar albums in rock history. Lauded by Rolling Stone, Billboard, and the international press, Rock ‘N’ Roll Animal was described by renowned music critic, Robert Christgau: “This is a live album with a reason for living.” Writer Joe Viglione, in his book, A Study of Lou Reed’s Berlin and Rock N’ Roll Animal Albums, describes the guitar stylings of Hunter and Wagner: “Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner were as potent a duo as Keith Richards and Mick Taylor, and the four make-up the “Golden Era” of both The Rolling Stones and Lou Reed, that period when the recordings were beyond magical…. Lou’s 9/1/73 show still rates as numero uno in my book, for presentation, drama, craftsmanship and sheer rock and roll energy.” In September 2010, nearly 40 years after the release of Rock N’ Roll Animal, Gibson.com honored Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter among the Top 50 Guitar Solos of All Time, for their guitar performances on Intro to Sweet Jane. Amid the prestigious company of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and other renowned guitar greats, The Hunter-Wagner team appeared twice, with honors as well for their “ghost” guitar work on Aerosmith’s Train Kept A Rollin from their first platinum selling album, Get Your Wings. In 1972, producer Bob Ezrin brought Wagner in to play lead guitar solos on Alice Cooper’s breakthrough School’s Out album. Uncredited at the time, Wagner’s guitar solos were attributed to the Alice Cooper band. The Cooper-Wagner songwriting collaboration began with I Love the Dead, released on Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies album. Cooper and Wagner began a prolific collaboration that spanned several decades. Together, the Cooper-Wagner songwriting team wrote 7 out of 9 of Cooper’s Top 10 hit records. Leaving Lou Reed in 1974, Wagner moved the entire Rock N Roll Animal band over to play with Alice Cooper. The first full album written and recorded by the Cooper-Wagner team, “Welcome to My Nightmare,” spawned a number of Top 10 singles. The Welcome to My Nightmare tour, with a road crew of more than 45 persons, private jets, technical wizardry, theatrical showmanship, and extravagant staging and lighting, became the biggest and highest grossing rock tour of its time. Shock rock was born. With Wagner’s studio walls lined with gold and platinum awards, he writes with the observant eye of a world traveled artist. In the late 1980’s, Wagner was commissioned to write music by the San Antonio Commission on Child Abuse. Wagner’s poignant composition,Remember the Child, painfully reflects the pain of child abuse. Renowned author/lecturer John Bradshaw discovered the song and chose it as his theme for the Emmy nominated PBS special,Homecoming. The song has since become the anthem for tens of thousands who have been scarred by child abuse, and is a catalytic tool used by many therapists in helping their patients access their hidden suffering of childhood trauma. Returning to Michigan in early 1994, Dick formed two bands, The Dick Wagner Band, and The RAW Emotion Rock Orchestra. Both later evolved into Dick Wagner and The Souls Journey Band. In 2005, Wagner relocated to Phoenix to form a new production company,Desert Dreams Productions, LLC with partners, Suzy Michelson and Alex Cyrell, entrepreneurs and founders of Omnimount Systems and Future Primitive Designs. A full service record label and artist management company, Desert Dreams specializes in “Music Production and Artist Development for the extraordinary Artist.” More than forty years after launching his storied and dynamic career, hit songwriter, guitar virtuoso, producer and arranger, Dick Wagner, remains a brilliant, prolific and vibrant force in American music. Whether rock, blues, country, jazz or spiritual, Wagner’s songs continue to detail the essence of life. His guitar playing continues to inspire guitarists worldwide, and his production values recall the era of great songs with great melodies and universally accessible lyrics.
