In this episode, we explore the dynamic interplay between traditional and new media with insights from retail analyst Heetha Herzog and culture writer Kate Lindsay live from VISIONS Summit: NYC. Moderated by Phillip, this conversation covers how media consumption shapes our reality, the influence of monocultural events, and the generational shifts in media platforms. We examine the evolving roles of traditional and new media, the impact of AI on marketing, and the rising significance of authenticity and community in consumer behavior. Listen now!“Media Matters”Key takeaways:[03:03] Kate Lindsay: "The barometer for when something has hit monoculture is when Twitter is just unusable if it's something you don't want to talk about."[05:00] Heetha Herzog: "There's a whole part of the population that still watches nightly news. They might be older, but they still consume that and watch it."[11:08] Phillip: "You also don't need someone's permission to post a TikTok, but there's still some prestige around the permission-gate kept media."[19:55] Kate Lindsay: "With tools like TikTok and Substack and Twitter, where you're seeing everyone talking at once, trends are really more what these gatekeepers pick up on and decide to elevate."Events like the Trump trial and Taylor Swift's album release dominate media, creating unavoidable online conversations.Younger generations gravitate towards platforms like TikTok, while older generations remain loyal to traditional media, indicating a shift in how content is consumed and trusted. The desire for luxury items and the rise of "dupe culture" reflect deeper psychological needs for identity and community, influencing consumer behavior. The prestige of traditional media is challenged by the authenticity of new media influencers, reshaping how trust is built and maintained in the digital age.Associated Links:Links & Resources:Check out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
In-person events have always been gold for B2B brands. Accounting for 10-50% of B2B marketing budgets in 2019, B2B marketers relied on physical events as a massive revenue source, effectively filling the funnel with leads, closing deals, and extending customer contracts. This was not to be so in 2020. We all know the story—as marketers everywhere had to pivot to digital, events and event planning went virtual. Lift and shift was not going to work. Not only did B2B marketing teams face unanticipated technical challenges and a sea of new virtual platforms, they also had to figure out how they could actually engage attendees and nurture leads in a world of Zoom fatigue. This episode comes from a recent livestream, where CMO Mandy Dhaliwal (Dell Boomi), CMO Paige O’Neill (Sitecore), and CEO David Fischette (Go West Creative Group) shared everything about their virtual event experiences in 2020, both the good and the bad. Tune in for common challenges, creative solutions, and predictions for the future of B2B virtual events. Who knows, they may be here to stay. I’m always thrilled when local churches make the decision to share their story on local TV. In spite of the chorus that “everyone is moving to the Internet,” broadcast television still has a huge audience and I wish more churches had that kind of vision. So if you’re considering buying thirty or sixty second TV commercials, then here’s a few important things to consider: It all starts with identifying the audience you want to target. I know pastors who are looking for the 20-30 year old crowd, so they advertise locally during Saturday Night Live and similar programs. We’ve worked with a few churches who are focused on reaching men, so they advertise during sports programming. One church client in the midwest advertises on the 6pm evening news because they’re trying to reach more business people. Depending on that decision, do you want to reach Christians, or non-believers? While we all want to reach non-Christians, even with the larger audience of secular TV stations, your response percentage will be much lower, and their chances of visiting your church pretty small. That’s not to say it’s not worth it, but know the response will be far less with a secular audience. Advertising on Christian stations or channels will reach a Christian audience, and they are more likely to respond, and probably more likely to visit the church. Plus if you have a very popular Christian program playing before or after your spot (what we call a “lead-in” or “lead-out”), you’ll probably find a huge audience there. Regarding length, generally speaking, if you have a high profile in the community, a :30 spot is fine. However, if you’ve not been on that station before, or don’t have that high profile, I’d consider starting with a :60 spot because it allows you to share more information and allow the audience to get to know you. Then, after a couple of months, you could shift to :30 spots, which are less expensive and easier to find available slots on the station’s schedule. However, if your budget is better for :30 spots, that’s no problem at all. Better to be out there than hidden under a basket. Regarding WHEN the spots are broadcast, you need to look again at the audience you’re trying to reach. Remember – getting in front of the RIGHT people is more important than getting in front of the MOST people. So pick the types of channels, programs, and times of day that your best potential audience is watching. Initially, I like the pastor hosting the commercial. That gets your face out there, and connects a personality with the church. After all, they often make the decision based on their reaction to the pastor, so it’s always good for them to see the pastor and hopefully identify with him. And as always, if you’re serious about moving forward, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Cooke Media Group. We can give you the kind of guidance and advice that will save you money and make an impact.

The great Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman said “Facts go straight to the head, and stories go straight to the heart.” #2 – Don’t Feel Everything Has to be Explicit – Don’t feel the obligation to tell the entire salvation, healing, and deliverance story with each program. #3 – Be in Touch with the Current Culture – Christian producers often don’t keep up with current programming and graphic styles, and I’m amazed at the number of Christian media professionals who never even watch television. #4 – Make Sure your Financing is in Place – I always recommend that you have six months of funding in the bank before you ever began a media outreach. #5 – Always be open to change. The most successful media ministries are ministries who aren’t afraid to change, update, and present a fresh, new approach to an ever-changing audience. #6 – Have a Clear Focus – Have a clear purpose and focus for each program you do. If you’re producing a program on the theme of salvation, then every aspect of that program needs to point in that direction. #7 – Don’t Forget Creativity – Exercise those creative muscles… and do it on a regular basis. Don’t take the easy way out, either in sermon preparation or program production. #8 – Don’t Let Your Vision Stop at Preaching – Preaching is a wonderful thing, however, don’t forget other wonderful program ideas – documentaries, movies, children’s programs, news, animation, music, and other formats. #9 – Don’t Forget Research – I’m convinced one of the most neglected areas of media ministry is research. Do you really know who’s watching your program and why? That knowledge should greatly affect what you produce. #10 – Don’t Underestimate The Importance of Quality – Today’s audiences are more technologically sophisticated than ever, and refuse to watch programs that aren’t up to current standards of quality. Always remember – stewardship isn’t necessarily saving money, it’s using money most effectively. I couldn’t write an article like this without urging you to do something else that I believe is absolutely critical for a media ministry – the need for prayer, and to seek the wise counsel of others. If you will stay near the heart of God in your decision making, and seek the help and counsel of both Godly men and women, as well as experienced media professionals, your chances of success will be greatly increased. In this episode, I discuss a needed update to the Emergency Alert System. People don't listen to live radio, and television broadcasts nearly as much as they used to and now consume much of their entertainment as prerecorded sound and video. As such, they are likely to miss a vital emergency message when in the past, they would have gotten over radio or television.
Gordon Smith, president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, talks about the future of broadcast television and the challenges local broadcasters face in the age of subscription TV and online platforms such as Netflix and Amazon. 2018 is looking to be a good year for small business. My personal definition of “a small business” is an owner-operator doing between $1M and $75M a year. I do not pretend to know the trends outside this group. The following are the small business trends that seem to be emerging in 2018: 1: Small businesses are falling out of love with social media and with SEO (Search Engine Optimization.) 2: Broadcast Radio and Broadcast Television are regaining their previous stature within ad budgets due to the excellent values available at this time. 3: Business owners are beginning to learn the power of having a memorable personality. (The typical company spokesperson is “polished and professional.” Which is just another way of saying “bland, vanilla-neutral. Unremarkable. Interchangeable. Easy to ignore.” Criticism is the price of personality. Which is why so few company spokespersons have any.) Brad and Sarah Casebier used the power of personality to grow their tiny little company in Austin, Texas to astonishing levels of success. You can hear the ad they currently have on the radio on the first page of today's http://www.mondaymorningmemo.com/rabbithole/ (rabbit hole.)4: Experiments with ads in online radio (Pandora, etc.) have typically been disappointments and word is spreading quickly. 5: Google is actively blocking all attempts by SEO specialists to “game” a client's ranking on Google. 6: The most savvy online marketing people are openly advocating mass media as the most efficient way to drive “direct navigation” to a website. (Direct Navigation is currently the single, most important criteria used by Google to determine the search engine ranking of your website. Number two is Time on Site. Number three is Pages Per Session. That being said, there are at least 14 other, smaller criteria considered by Google, but with each one having a decreasing degree of importance.) 7: Sensing the dying momentum for their services, SEO consultants are beginning to push harder than ever in their search for new clients. 8: Recognizing the importance of aligning all their channels of customer communication, business owners are becoming adamant that their online marketing contain the words and phrases [brandable chunks] that have been popularized through their mass media ads. 9: Extremely savvy business owners are taking this concept of “channel alignment” to its ultimate end: ongoing agreement, alignment and reinforcement of mass media messaging throughout all their: A. online efforts, B. direct mail, including invoicing C. email, D. outbound calls, E. conversations of Customer Service Representatives with inbound callers F. weekly orientation and training of salespeople G. weekly orientation and training of all other employees who might interact with the public on behalf of the company. Let me say this as plainly as I can. The smartest and most successful small business owners are orchestrating and aligning all these previously “siloed” departments into a single, concerted voice. And it's about time. Roy H. Williams

Attention Greendale Students, I mean Across The Airwaves Listeners! Sorry I was role-playing as Dean Pelton and just to clarify I'm not gay. Anyway, this week's podcast reviews the penultimate to the Season Finale episode of Orphan Black but as you can tell from our opening the primary focus of this week is on reviewing what they have been the final episode of Community as many of our favorite actors from the show have found jobs elsewhere but Joel McHale has kept hope alive for a movie which we make theories on during our discussion. However, if you want our aspirations to become a reality with an actual Community Movie, then it's up to you fans to get out there on social media and start hash-tagging the phrase #andamovie. Also I join Nico for an extended news section where we talk about Star Wars Rogue One, another Star Wars Anthology Film featuring the Bounty Hunters of the Galaxy which could be directed by Jon Favreau or Matthew Vaughn, Ewan McGregor possibly reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucius Fox being a regular character in Gotham Season 2, Joel McHale being casted in The X-Files Revival, Henry Simmons and Luke Mitchell being bumped up to regular cast members for Agents of Shield Season 5, Samuel L Jackson not appearing in Captain America: Civil War for some odd reason and much more.
