What if the spectacle of the past is shaping the media and fashion of today? Join us as we unravel the beguiling narrative of freak shows, from their origins as sideshow curiosities to their influence on modern culture. Our journey takes us through the intricate dance of authenticity and performance, reflecting on anecdotes like Jack Black's lesson on recording's importance. We question if today's mainstream acceptance could strip these performances of their once subversive edge and what it means to be a "freak" in today's world.Throughout the episode, we traverse the historical arc of freak shows, exploring their transformation into contemporary media spectacles akin to reality TV. With examples ranging from Donald Trump's spectacle-driven approach to the enchanting yet controversial acts of Dutch magicians Robert and Emil, we compare this provocative art form with traditional performance arts. Can freak shows be considered a unique artistic expression or merely a mirror of evolving societal norms? We close with a thought-provoking exploration of the emotional landscape that freak shows inhabit. Through historical, literary, and philosophical lenses, we dissect the language of monstrosity and how physical differences evoke visceral reactions. From the evocative narratives of Victorian medical curiosities to the modern allure of extremes, we reflect on how these performances challenge identities and provoke empathy, leaving listeners to ponder the complex tapestry of human experience that freak shows continue to weave.Support the show...Now you can get t-shirts and hoodies with our wonderful logo. What if the raw spectacle of freak shows holds an unexpected depth that challenges our understanding of art? Join us for a captivating discussion with Anna Maria Sienicka, a PhD student and lecturer at Paris Nanterre University, as we explore the philosophy behind these controversial performances. We tackle the question of whether freak shows, often dismissed as mere curiosity-driven entertainment, might contain a kernel of cultural significance worth preserving, much like the multifaceted allure of opera. We venture into the fascinating parallels between slapstick comedy and poetry, uncovering how these seemingly simple forms can evolve into profound reflections on life and death. Our conversation reveals how entertainment transcends mere escapism, becoming a medium for exploring deeper human experiences. We also spotlight influential figures like Matt Fraser and Julie Atlas Muz, who redefine the freak show genre, transforming it into a platform for artistic expression that challenges societal norms.Continuing our exploration, we examine the blurred line between art and entertainment, questioning traditional views on what constitutes artistic merit. From comic books to the French art scene's take on American freak shows, we highlight how diverse mediums evoke visceral responses that defy intellectual categorization. We also discuss the childlike fascination with the monstrous within freak shows, drawing on personal anecdotes to illustrate the primal curiosity they inspire. Finally, we celebrate the artistic lifestyle of showmen, whose unique existence on the road reflects a life steeped in performance art akin to modern-day shamanism.Support the show...Now you can get t-shirts and hoodies with our wonderful logo. Ever wondered how the Freak Show transcends typical performance art with its unique philosophical dimensions? Join Captain Frodo and our esteemed guest, Anna Maria Seneca, a PhD student and lecturer from Paris Nanterre University, as we unravel the intricate layers of this captivating world. Through Anna Maria's research and insights, we explore the Freak Show's distinct identity, standing apart from magic and clowning by offering a profound encounter with the unknown.Social media's impact on self-presentation takes center stage as we draw parallels to Goffman's theatrical metaphor of life. By challenging societal norms and algorithm-driven beauty standards, the Freak Show emerges as a rebellious act akin to the transformative power of drag makeup. Sword swallowing becomes more than just shock and awe; it's an invitation to experience the mysterious and sacred, transforming perceptions and enriching life with an appreciation for the unknown. These acts, once labeled as "freaky," reveal deeper truths, encouraging audiences to embrace the intriguing beauty of the unexplained. The episode ventures further into the art of deception, where the boundaries of reality and illusion blur. We dissect the complex interplay between deception in magic and the authenticity of Freak Shows, much like the theatrical spectacle of American wrestling. From historical marvels to contemporary performances, Freak Shows blend reality with fiction in a way that captivates and challenges audiences. Through my own performances, such as squeezing through tennis rackets, we explore the art of anticipation and humor that guides audiences on a journey filled with surprise and engagement. Support the show...Now you can get t-shirts and hoodies with our wonderful logo. August 1862 in Leicester, England.

But why is it necessary to have these freaks performing in elementary schools around the nation? Ya got me. Society is in a nosedive and it beginning to filter into middle America as well. Not too long ago, people would pay money to gawk and stare at a performer with a physical disformity. They were called freak shows and they began in large part thanks to P.T. Barnum, whose circus we still enjoy today. Sounds awful, but some of these performers became rich folks as a result. Exploitive? You decide, after taking in this classic episode. Whats Witchcraft Hitting You With Frontrunner?Well, I was sitting out on the back porch this morning and the Lord said:Things are fixing to go VERY VERY well for some while going very very badly for others.  So we are at this point where we can either believe that we are stepping into the “VERY VERY GOOD” or we can miss destiny.  And if your in the grouping that disobeyed the Lord (out of the 4 people groups) spoken about by Rabbi Landry then things are about to go south for you.  Many of you are actually losing your anointings as we speak just like King Saul did while God is raising the David's up! In my prayer time yesterday God gave me a word for the Body:I saw a vision of a circus tent where there was a ton full of people watching as the circus went on until God began to gather His TRUE believers to MOVE out from underneath that apparatus of lies/illegal covering that hindered them from seeing Him for who He truly was. I watched as the Master Ring leaders were gathered up, then those who were stuck with their heads in the mouths of lions who were no more of God than the devil himself.  Then I was the elephants in the room begin to be escorted out of the tent.  One by one as God began to deconstruct this demonic veil/tent/ covering that had been over so many peoples eyes as a SIDE SHOW for years.  I saw this deconstruction occurring in the natural/ and by the spirit as God told this FREAK SHOW to get on down the road.  That the devil was no longer welcomed within Kingdom and had no place amongst His people! And as the people walked out from underneath the darkness of the tent the Glory of God was blinding to them as I then saw them begin to walk up this mountain like Tom Sawyer /Huckleberry Finn with bags of apples on their backs (symbolizing a type of old-fashioned values).   As they climbed, they would drop apples along their pathway upwards as those below them began to taste/eat and see that the LORD was GOOD IN DEED! So they kept climbing into the Glory of God!   What do Apples represent?Apples represent Fragrance, beauty, sweetness, Good health, a tranquility, the FAVOR OF GOD with a peaceful spirit.Support the show

All The F Words

The word “freak”, like the word “queer”, has many different meanings. To someone who came of age in the late 60', early 70's, it was a badge of honor. Hippies were what others called the tribe. Members called themselves freaks. Right around the same time, there were Jesus freaks and we'll talk about them on this episode of All of the F Words too. And then there are freak shows, prominent from the Victorian era in Europe and North America and still today, because, apparently, physical difference is morbidly fascinating to humans.Freak Took on New Meaning in the 1960'shttps://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/local-events/chrysti/chrysti-the-wordsmith-freak-took-on-new-meaning-in-the-1960s/article_69ca8c65-c3d7-5e43-8db9-3940c2dcee6d.htmlhttps://hippiedictionary.com/excerpts.phpWho were the Jesus Freaks?https://www.compellingtruth.org/Jesus-freak.htmlHistory of Freak Shows https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/nfca/researchandarticles/freakshowsGeek Love – novel about a carny family https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PIOMK5G/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1Finnish comic Ismo on the oddities of the English languagehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igh9iO5BxBoFollow us on social media @allthefwordspod

Christine Blackburn is not only the guest for this episode, but also the gracious host as we recorded at her kitchen table in Los Feliz, California. Christine is the host of the long-running and much-loved podcast, Story Worthy - and it's live show counterpart, Story Smash. 00:01:53 - Thanks for being here. We've shared a joint… you're holding a cat. No two women have been more prepared. Dawn introduces  Christine. Her podcast, Story Worthy has had over 725 episodes, running 12 years. 00:04:04 - Dawn and Christine commence fucking the history of FREAKS! Dawn asks Christine why the subject interests her and she said that it is the combination from the performers themselves of joy and laughter (sometimes) along with their deformities and apparent suffering. 00:06:04 - Dawn presents her primary source of information regarding Joseph Merrick and much of the Freak Show culture in Europe in the 1880's. The True History of the Elephant Man by Michael Howells and Peter Ford00:06:43 - We take a moment to discuss the word, “Freak”.  It's modern usage appears to arise in 1847 in reference to a ‘freak of nature' a malformed member of a species. Annie Jones - an early and famous 'bearded lady' - did take vocal objection to the word but seems to be an outlier. 00:08:32 - Dawn commences The Story of The Elephant man, Joseph Merrick. How he came to meet Dr. Treeves and how he became more than just a 'freak' but a cultural icon featured in theater, film, and music over many decades.00:13:57 - Dawn asks Christine: Do you think Freak Shows are good or bad? Dawn compares it as 'a living' to sex work and child labor (in so far as we discuss it today with minor athletes and artists). We can't really evaluate how 'good or bad' it is until we know how emancipated the individual who is doing it is. Are they empowered or exploited? Are they making this choice freely and being compensated fairly? ...then we may not need to worry how 'happy' they are with their work any more than we do with anyone else. 00:19:13 - There were several so-called 'freaks' who made good as freak show performers over the years leading up to Joseph Merrick, and he would have been aware that displaying himself was a fair alternative to poverty. For example:00:19:40 - Lazarus and Joannes Baptista Colloredo: Conjoined twins from 17th Century Europe.00:21:21 - Matthew Buckinger. No hands, no feet - he's known for his micograhy. 4 marriages, 14 children (at least) by 8 different women... probably because he was an excellent listener.00:22:48 - They come back to Joseph Merrick. Not only his life up to meeting Dr. Treeves (spoiler alert, there is an honest-to-goodness wicked step mother) but up to his death.  A beautiful death, if ever such a thing were possible. 00:34:49 - Having heard his story, Christine has some questions: Did they ever pitch him as psychic? No, Dawn says, what was amazing about him was his normalcy. The dichotomy of his look to his being. Tom Norman sold him as amazing to look at, and more amazing because he's just like us. BREAK00:39:53 - Dawn thanks Christine for sharing her dope and providing the 'OPP' that was so celebrated at the top of the show. She also introduces our modern-day freaks like some of the cast of American Horror Story - season 4.00:42:38 - Christine shares a story from her time at a ski resort in Colorado "back in the day." The premise is that wealth is great... but sometimes you get a perfect day for free.00:43:14 - Dawn begins her list of  FILF'S - Freaks I'd Like to Fuck (with consent, of course). The first - a featured performer from the classic 1932 film FEAKS: Schlitzie Surtese. The Pinhead. 00:46:00 - The 'Siamese' Twins. Chang and Eng Bunker.00:48:16 - Frank Lentini, the 3-legged man. He has 3 fully-functioning legs. Full set of fully-functioning genitals. “Very well-liked. Dawn and Christine discuss how that act would go. Christine is against it, Dawn thinks it could have its advantages.00:49:51 - Ella Harper, The Camel Girl. The first Merch Success Story.00:52:37 - Prince Randian - The Living Torso. No arms, no legs - he could roll a cigarette, could play virtually every instrument, spoke 5 languages, had 5 kids and was brought to the circus by PT Barnum, and made a fortune. Died a very old, wealthy man. Christine and Dawn discuss a variety of tangents before signing off, including what our particular act would be in our own sideshow...THANK YOU - listener - for tuning in and reading this far. Wayne Federman, author of The History of Stand-Up, makes it clear early in his book - and in our conversation - that this is not the history of Comedy in general. We are not necessarily concerned with when the first cave-man made a fart joke.  We get into how the modern day performance style, 'STAND-UP' came to be. We learn who were the originators, how it evolved, and where might it be going next. Thanks for joining us - lets get started!PART 100:02:35 - Wayne is also a professor at the University of Southern California (USC) and discusses his course there and how he approaches teaching comedy to his students.00:04:46 - Wayne co-hosts his own podcast: The History of Stand-up with Andrew Stephen.00:08:24 - How did this specific kind of performance style get the name 'Stand-Up'. There are two theories, that it came from bookers, and that it came from the mob. Dawn prefers the later. 00:12:20 - We get into The 4 Forefathers - according to Wayne - of stand-up. The first is Artemus Ward aka: Charles Brown.00:17:04 - The next forefather is Mark Twain who Dawn has always had a crush on because he touches so many of her interests from boats to electricity to comedy. Wayne details how Mark Twain went from writing to the stage, and how he won (and made back) all his money. 00:20:53 - The third forefather we discuss is Bert Williams, a black performer who made his debut in blackface. He went on to be among the most successful performers of his time - including being the one of the first voices ever put on a record. 00:23:04 - Will Rogers is the 4th forefather and was inspired by Bert Williams - performing with him in the Ziegfield Follies. Often called “The Father of Political Comedy” Will Rogers might be considered America's first rockstar - he even hosted the Oscars and tragically died in a plane crash. 00:26:38 - Dawn and Wayne discuss the differences between minstrel show, Vaudeville, Revues and Burlesque. We also talk about the origin of the phrase 'Going Blue'. 00:32:12 - The Women! We talk about women in comedy like the icon, Fanny Brice (AKA: Funny Girl) and the hilarious and overlooked Elsie Janis. BREAKPART 200:35:10 - Technology, of course, changed the course of stand-up comedy and one of the first thing it yielded was The Record. The first one to sell over a million copies and become a phenomenon was 'Cohen on the Phone'.  00:38:16 -  Dawn shares a little love for the emcee's! The Master of Ceremonies who often does their own set at the top of a show and then introduce the line-up for the remainder of the show. Dawn is often an emcee at clubs around Los Angeles and gives her perspective. 00:41:30 - We get to Vegas and the great emcees of early lounge acts like Shecky Green, Don Rickles. 00:43:48 - Television get it's legs in the late 1940's with the early hit of Milton Berle and the Texico Star Theater. Around the same time, Ed Sullivan appears on CBS. In time, Ed Sullivan would completely dominate the sphere. 00:45:08 - Dawn talks about how history repeats itself  (only kinda) and we get to the 2nd Records Boom in the 1970's in much the same way, and for much the same reason we had them in the 19-teens. This time they flourish with the Party Album and give legs to the next wave of comedy. Out of the nightclubs and into our speakers and screens. 00:48:05 - The Comedy Boom of the 1980's was a thing to behold (and Wayne was there!) Anyplace that had 4 things could be a comedy club: Liquor License, Talent, Microphone, Tables & Chairs.00:53:27 - Comedians in sitcoms - Dawn goes through the many comedians that then found their way onto sitcoms. From Jackie Gleason to Ray Ramano. 00:57:00 - Dawn talks about how when she was a kid and would catch comedy on late-night, she felt the thrill that it must be to perform. That moment, walking through the crowd and taking the stage... woof. What a feeling. Wayne says it best himself with he quote that ends his book: "Yet performing live, alone, on stage, remains the defining aspect of the profession. That terrifying-to-thrilling experience, in front of an audience, is what connects stand-up comedians through time."COMING NEXT:EPISODE 12 - Freak Shows with Christine Blackburn!
