In this episode of Talking Drupal, we discuss the latest DOJ accessibility ruling and its implications for Drupal with special guest Josh Mitchell. Josh, a seasoned expert who has led teams in digital agencies, governments, and non-profits, sheds light on what the ruling means for state and local governments, the importance of accessibility, and steps to achieve compliance. We also explore the Sa11y module, a powerful tool for enhancing website accessibility, and compare it with the Editorially module. Additionally, we touch on the upcoming MID Camp 2025. Tune in for an insightful discussion on making web content more accessible for all. There's a module for that Module name/project name: Sa11y Brief history It's worth mentioning that the name is a numeronym, so spelled s-a-1-1-y, which plays off of a common way the word “accessibility” is abbreviated How old: created in Jan 2018 by Bryan Sharpe (b_sharpe) but the namespace was taken over in Jun 2024 by Mark Conroy (markconroy) of LocalGov Drupal, so the current 3.0.1 release, which supports Drupal 10 and 11, is a completely different module than the original 8.x-1.x branch. Maintainership Actively maintained, in fact this module came out of the ongoing work being done on the LocalGov distribution and profile Security coverage Test coverage: no, but the module is effectively just a wrapper for the Sa11y library, which is CMS agnostic and used in the Wordpress and Joomla communities as well The Sa11y library has its own website, which includes documentation Number of open issues: 1 open issues, which isn't a bug Usage stats: 62 sites Module features and usage We did cover the Editoria11y accessibility checker as MOTW all the way back in episode #350, almost 3 years ago, and Sa11y was mentioned at that time. Both modules have had major releases since then, so I thought this week's episode would be a chance to do an updated comparison Sa11y does include some checks that Editoria11y does not, such as color contrast checking and a readability score The Editoria11y module, on the other hand, includes site-wide reporting that would be helpful for site admins, as well as a wealth of configuration options including one or more DOM elements to use as the container to check within, a list of elements to exclude, and so on. Recent versions of Editoria11y also include an option for live feedback as you edit, which should work with CKEditor 5, Paragraphs 5 or newer, and Gutenberg At the end of the day, however, both projects are intended to provide your content editors with immediate feedback on the accessibility compliance of what they create. So, it's worth looking at the feedback each tool provides and deciding which one is more useful for your team in particular

Jim Hoft was passing through London in July and I was able to spend some time with him and record a short interview. What Jim has done with The Gateway Pundit is an example to us all, starting in 2004 as a blog, it has now grown into one of the largest conservative news websites in America. Despite co-ordinated attempts by big tech to de-platform TGP and cut off advertising and revenue streams, they continue to grow and flourish and they continue to "speak truth" and "expose the wickedness of the left". Jim shares some stories from that 18-year journey, including TGP's time as accredited press in the Trump White House. Enjoy this interview, we think you will be inspired at just what is possible. Jim Hoft is the founder and editor of The Gateway Pundit, one of the top conservative news outlets in America. Jim was awarded the Reed Irvine Accuracy in Media Award in 2013 and is the proud recipient of the Breitbart Award for Excellence in Online Journalism from the Americans for Prosperity Foundation in May 2016. The Gateway Pundit was originally founded in 2004 as TheGatewayPundit/blogspot.com by Jim Hoft who is the Editor of TGP. At the time the site primary wrote brief introductions and linked to other content producers serving as a hub for important current events in the political and media sphere. The site was established for readers tired of limited options and a politicized establishment media. The first readers included Joe, Jim's twin brother, Midwest Engineer and Jim's mother….and it grew from there. Located in America's Heartland, TGP focuses on topics Heartland Americans care about. Since its founding, TGP's has grown as many Americans turn to digital news sources and as many Americans continue to lose trust in the purportedly unbiased nature of older newspapers and networks, TGP is addressing this gap as a trusted news source for the stories and views that are largely untold or ignored by traditional news outlets. Editorially, The Gateway Pundit espouses politically conservative world view that support conservative positions on most issues, including abortion, national defense, small government, second amendment rights, tax policy, individual freedom and Constitutional values. San Francisco Decides: The District Attorney Recall Election Show editorially warning

As San Francisco decides whether or not to recall District Attorney Chesa Boudin on June 7, join us for a nonpartisan forum to hear from both sides on this important choice. Boudin was elected in 2019 on a progressive platform of decarceration and criminal justice reform. While many applaud these efforts, doubts about the effectiveness of Boudin's policies, coupled with highly-publicized crimes, have dogged Boudin's office (and city leadership at-large). Increasing fears of disorder in the city and questions about the district attorney's job performance have led to San Francisco's second recall election this year. To break down the Boudin recall, The Commonwealth Club has invited two leading voices with opposing views on this important election. Lara Bazelon is a professor of law and the director of the Criminal Juvenile Justice and Racial Justice Clinical Programs at the University of San Francisco School of Law. Her writings on the justice system and its shortcomings have appeared in The Atlantic and The New York Times, and she's been a vocal supporter of the district attorney.  Brooke Jenkins served as assistant district attorney under Boudin until October 2021. She agrees with Boudin's central tenet that the criminal justice system is racist and needs reform, but she left the office due to what she saw as a prioritization of politics over outcomes and the needs of crime victims and their families. She supports his recall. Francis Fukuyama: Liberalism and Its Discontents Show editorially warning

When noted political scientist Francis Fukuyama predicted the "end of history," it seemed that the Western form of traditional classical liberalism and democracy—rule of law, equal treatment, individualism, and political freedom—was on the march in countries around the world, and that a new political order would be established around the globe. However, as the Russian attack on Ukraine shows, the battle between autocracy and classic liberalism will continue to shape global relations in the present and the future, and as history it will tell the story of this complicated period in world history. In his latest book Liberalism and Its Discontents, Fukuyama explains the troubled history of the American realization of classical liberalism here in the United States, and the challenges from both sides of the political spectrum arising in recent decades. With the right demanding economic freedom above all else, and the left making its core ideal the elevation of identity above the universality of humanity, Fukuyama argues that both approaches miss the mark in grasping classical liberalism, and the consequences can be disastrous both at home and around the world. At this critical time, Fukuyama proposes a bold new defense of classical liberalism, and explains that failing to do so will continue to fragment America's civil society, and will influence global pushback on democracy itself. Join us as Fukuyama engages in a critical and timely discussion on classical liberalism, why it remains one of the most influential political ideologies of the past millennium, and why battles around it will determine the path of the 21st century for the United States and the world. Hooray! The guys and gals of this brilliant clothing manufacturer are making sure the pod is funded until the end of 2020. Of course, Stephen and Raya are making sure the funds are carefully invested to keep the pod going for as long as possible, though we are writing this from a yacht barely able to see due to the huge amounts of Bollinger and party drugs we're having. Of course, that's a joke. There's lots of them in the podcast. Along with our main topic this show; Canary cycling. It's been the don of Europe's cycling getaways for what feels like decades now. We ask why, and more importantly, we go over there to find out what it has to offer. And Raya gets a revelation from Stephen that leaves her feeling... well, nauseous. On top of that, the velominati, face recognition through a helmet, and Raya's Texan challenge. On a serious note, regular pod fans should rest assured; our sponsors aren't going to change what we put into the podcast. Editorially it's entirely still Stephen and Raya's decisions. In other words; yes, there's swearing. We can't change that. It's too late for us. We're potty mouthed and beyond help. Ooh! And there's a super generous dhb discount code (25%!) hidden in the pod. Developing Perspective

Towards a Better App Store: Part 2 Make it up in Volume This is Part 2 of an ongoing series trying to explore practical ways that the App Store could be better for customers. Today I’m going to talk about the Store’s size. The size of the App Store’s catalog is often thrown around as a valuable, useful metric for judging the heath and vitality of the ecosystem. That may have been true before a certain scale. There is value in having a diverse and deep inventory that mets every need but beyond a certain point it completely looses relevance. Duplication, ‘spamming’ and decay of older apps hurts the store more than helps it. In many ways the incredible volume of the Store is at the core of many of the other challenges it faces. App Review takes longer than developers would like. Search becomes tricky. Editorially curating new arrivals becomes daunting. It isn’t an easy problem to solve. How do you determine which apps should be allowed in which should not. Just how many Flappy clones should be allowed to exist in the Store? 5, 10, 1000? It isn’t just the overall size that is a problem though, the rate of increase is also increasing. This is only new apps approved on the store (taken from 148Apps), add to this updates and it is an incredible volume. Also, how many of the apps on the App Store are being actively maintained. I’d guess the number is pretty low but the old apps still stay there. Buoying the numbers but not actually providing good value to Aside on Apple For this whole series I’m going to assume that tackling the questions of making the App Store better aren’t constrained by budget nor desire. I’m going to assume that somewhere in Apple’s Profit & Loss they can find whatever resources they need to attack these challenges. Furthermore, I’m going to assume that they have a desire to make the App Store as customer friendly a place as possible. Both of these seem like reasonable things to assume but I feel I should put that out there before I begin. Recommendations I had initially gone down the road of trying to work out ways to make judgments about which apps are the ‘good’ ones and which ‘deserved’ to be in the Store. It very quickly became clear that this was nearly impossible to do. While I (personally) can look at apps on the store and say they don’t belong, based on my own tastes. This never generalized. The App Store would be worse off if it were filtered with too harsh an opinion. I had also thought of applying other external limits on the number of apps. Things like raising the cost per submission or number of new apps per developer per year. These would only really affect the current trend of re-skinned apps (which can be better addressed directly), I’d rather have things simple for the majority than punish everyone for a few bad apples. I’m reminded of a parenting adage. Have few rules but strictly enforce them. I think this would do much to improve the situation on the Store. The App Review Guidelines are a pretty solid set of rules. They have evolved and adapted to the times but overall they do a pretty good job of keeping out the stuff that is objectively ‘junk’. There are of course grey areas, as there should be, but I don’t have too many complaints with the guidelines we have today. The area that I think we could do much better on is the way in which they are enforced. Specifically, when they are enforced. As best I can tell, other than in exceptional cases once an app is approved it is always approved. #1: Apps should be required to pass approval on an ongoing basis. The purpose of the having app review and rules about what constitutes an acceptable app is to form and direct the content of the store in the customer’s favor. This applies to things like avoiding crashing, malware ridden software. It equally applies to establishing a baseline of design and development standards that everyone must meet. Having things like the Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) as a requirement for submissions establishes a bare minimum for quality for all apps. However, the App Store is a vibrant, ever moving ecosystem. What was acceptable a few years ago is likely not today, at least not without any adaptations. This applies most concretely to supporting new versions of iOS. Since February 1st all new submissions just be built against the latest SDK and be “optimized for iOS 7”. If that applies on the front end, it should be reapplied to the back-catalog as well. Exactly how this would be applied doesn’t really matter. It could be applied on a monthly, quarterly or (honestly) even annual basis. The important thing is that it would create a Store where any app a customer purchases would be assured of meeting and complying with the current set of guidelines. The stated goal of the Guidelines is to “ensure they are reliable, perform as expected, and are free of offensive material.” I believe every app on the store should meet those criteria. If older apps no longer meet the stated guidelines for what an app should be they should be de-listed (still available to re-download if already purchased). Leaving space on the virtual shelves for apps that provide the best possible experience for customers. This would constitute a lot of work for the App Review team, but I think it is hard to argue that the result wouldn’t be worth it for customers.

Last June, Edward Snowden, a man still in his twenties with, as he put it, "a home in paradise", went on the run. He took with him vast amounts of secret information belonging to the US government's security services.Snowden holds libertarian - or anti-statist - views. He believes the American government's pervasive surveillance activities which he revealed break the law but are also morally wrong. In Britain, "The Guardian" newspaper published the classified information Snowden had obtained. This seemed odd. Editorially, it was not sympathetic to Snowden's anti-state nostrums. But, on privacy grounds, it agreed with him that it was inherently wrong for democratic governments to spy on their citizens online. Furthermore, it argued that governments should not decide for themselves when and how they would do their surveillance. It is this political alliance between the libertarian right and the liberal left - which are normally opposed to one another - which David Aaronovitch investigates in this programme. He explores, in a detailed interview with the editor of "The Guardian", Alan Rusbridger, why the newspaper published the secret information. Are states threatening citizens' privacy in the cyber age? Or is it in fact governments which are more vulnerable than ever before to the unauthorised disclosure of their secrets? What secrets is the state itself entitled to keep from its citizens and from potential enemies? And who decides that question?the security services, Parliament or the government? Or the press and the whistle-blowers? Alan Rusbridger claims his newspaper can properly adjudicate what should and should not be published about state secrets. But how does he justify that apparently self-serving argument?

Also on the show: The story about media all being dyed-in-the-wool liberals is full of holes, of course; but big outlets like the New York Times have traditionally taken the ‘liberal' line, which is also the majority popular line, in favor of the right to abortion.
