The Apocalypse of Ezra - A Syriac Perspective

The Apocalypse of Ezra, a Jewish apocalyptic text from the late 1st century CE, grapples with themes of divine justice and the suffering of the righteous after the destruction of the Second Temple.  The Syriac version, a particularly valuable source, offers unique insights into its transmission and interpretation within early Christian communities of the Near East.  This version's theological nuances, particularly regarding eschatology, are highlighted through its comparison with other textual traditions (Latin, Ethiopic, Armenian). The text's seven visions explore these themes, portraying the end times, a new creation, and the eventual triumph of the righteous.  Its influence on both Jewish and early Christian thought is significant, providing solace and theological frameworks for understanding suffering and hope for the future. for more online courses check our website: www.twinsbiblicalacademy.com

The Book of Adam and Eve, an apocryphal text from late antiquity (3rd–5th centuries CE), expands upon the biblical account of Adam and Eve's post-Eden lives. Existing in various ancient languages (Syriac, Ethiopic, Arabic, Greek), it explores their suffering, repentance, and eventual redemption, often incorporating Messianic prophecies. The text's theological significance lies in its examination of human nature, the battle against evil (Satan), and the promise of divine mercy. Its influence is seen in Christian art, literature, and theological interpretations of original sin and salvation, particularly within Syriac and Ethiopic traditions. The work's detailed narratives offer valuable insights into the cultural and religious beliefs of early Christians. www.twinsbiblicalacademy.com

fWotD Episode 2782: Apocalypse of Peter Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 16 December 2024 is Apocalypse of Peter. The Apocalypse of Peter, also called the Revelation of Peter, is an early Christian text of the 2nd century and a work of apocalyptic literature. It is the earliest-written extant work depicting a Christian account of heaven and hell in detail. The Apocalypse of Peter is influenced by both Jewish apocalyptic literature and Greek philosophy of the Hellenistic period. The text is extant in two diverging versions based on a lost Koine Greek original: a shorter Greek version and a longer Ethiopic version. The work is pseudepigraphal: it is purportedly written by the disciple Peter, but its actual author is unknown. The Apocalypse of Peter describes a divine vision experienced by Peter through the risen Jesus Christ. After the disciples inquire about signs of the Second Coming of Jesus, the work delves into a vision of the afterlife (katabasis), and details both heavenly bliss for the righteous and infernal punishments for the damned. In particular, the punishments are graphically described in a physical sense, and loosely correspond to "an eye for an eye" (lex talionis): blasphemers are hung by their tongues; liars who bear false witness have their lips cut off; callous rich people are pierced by stones while being made to go barefoot and wear filthy rags, mirroring the status of the poor in life; and so on.The Apocalypse of Peter is not included in the standard canon of the New Testament, but is classed as part of New Testament apocrypha. It is listed in the canon of the Muratorian fragment, a 2nd-century list of approved books in Christianity and one of the earliest surviving proto-canons. However, the Muratorian fragment expresses some hesitation on the work, saying that some authorities would not have it read in church. While the Apocalypse of Peter influenced other Christian works in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th centuries, it came to be considered inauthentic and declined in use. It was largely superseded by the Apocalypse of Paul, a popular 4th-century work heavily influenced by the Apocalypse of Peter that provides its own updated vision of heaven and hell. The Apocalypse of Peter is a forerunner of the same genre as the Divine Comedy of Dante, wherein the protagonist takes a tour of the realms of the afterlife. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:14 UTC on Monday, 16 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Apocalypse of Peter on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Matthew.

In their extreme hubris, humans believe that Luke's admonition, “A tree is known by its fruit,” is nothing more than a proverb about being a “better parent.” But as I explained a few episodes ago, it is a warning that humans can't parent. It is a judgment, a mashal, a rule, a verse, a biblical sign that there is no such thing as a good human parent because the only tree that bears “good fruit” is the wisdom of God.With this in mind, what did you go out to see in the wilderness of Luke 7? Twice?Luke wrote the question twice.Twice, he asked, “Are you the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?”Twice, as if the same person were looking at himself in the mirror. Is Jesus looking for John the Baptist, or is it the other way around? What's the difference between the message and the messenger?Do you study the Bible, or does the Bible study you?Who is the reed shaken by the wind?Is it the reed Solomon can't use to measure John's Palace, or the reed Isaiah's “Bringer of Justice” refuses to break?Who is the “Bringer of Justice?” Can you tell? What did you go out to see, human?A prophet? You may be indifferent to the prophet, yes, but then you hate his message, too.You hypocrite.I will tell you what the fruit of the Good Parent looks like.It doesn't eat bread, and it doesn't drink wine, and you say it has a demon. It eats bread and drinks its fill, and you accuse it of gluttony. Why? Because you are a wicked human parent. You do not love God. You are like a spoiled child: impossible to please, self-serving, fickle, unresponsive, pouty, regardless of the message or the messenger. But the children of the Good Parent, whether they fast or feast sumptuously with sinners, are deemed righteous by the Most High; the same is shown to be righteous by his children. As Paul said:“You are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.”This week, I discuss Luke 7:25-35.Show Notesצ-ד-ק (sade-dalet-qof) / ص-د-ق (ṣād-dāl-qāf) / δικαιόωThe root צ-ד-ק carries the usage “deemed just” or “deemed righteous” in Semitic languages:Aramaic: צְדֵק “He was righteous.”Syriac: זָדֵק “It is right.” Note the shift of צ to ז. (Klein)Ugaritic: (ṣdq) “Reliable, strong.”Arabic: صَدَقَ (ṣadaqa) “He spoke the truth.”Ethiopic: (ṣadaqa) “He was just, was righteous.”In the Bible, there are numerous examples of this root as it pertains to God's judgment:“And the heavens declare His righteousness (צִדְקָתוֹ, ṣidqātō), for God Himself is judge. Selah.” (Psalms 50:6)“Put Me in remembrance, let us argue our case together; state your cause, that you may be proved right (תִּצְדָּק, tiṣdāq).” (Isaiah 43:26)“In the Lord all the offspring of Israel will be [deemed] righteous (יִצְדְּקוּ, yiṣdāqū) and will glory.” (Isaiah 45:25)In the Qur'an and Arabic, the root ص-د-ق is associated with honesty, trustworthiness, acts of charity, the fulfillment of promises, and righteousness. Compare parallel usage in the Torah and the Qur'an:ְהֶאֱמִן בַּיהוָה וַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָ לּוֹ צְדָקָה (Wa-heʾemin ba-Yahweh wa-yaḥshebaha lahu ṣidāqah)“Then he believed in the Lord, and he reckoned it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6)وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتَابِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّهُ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَبِيًّا(Wa-udhkur fī al-kitābi Ibrāhīma innahu kāna ṣiddīqan nabiyyā.)“And mention in the Book Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of righteousness and a prophet.”(Surah Maryam, 19:41)Examples of ص-د-ق in Arabic: صَدِّيقٌ (ṣiddīq) – A person of high righteousness and truthfulness.صَدَقَةٌ (ṣadaqah) – Voluntary charity or almsgiving.صَادِقٌ (ṣādiq) – Truthful, honest, a righteous person.تَصْدِيقٌ (taṣdīq) – Affirmation or confirmation of truth.مُصَدِّقٌ (muṣaddiq) – One who believes in and confirms the truth. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

THE BOOK OF 1 ENOCH has become a source of controversy among Christians. Regardless of your view of the book, it's undeniable that it was known to the apostles and the early church, who generally had a favorable view of it. On the one hand, 1 Enoch is not in the Bible. There are good reasons for that; there are internal contradictions and details that are contrary to scripture. We agree with the early church, which, guided by the Holy Spirit, excluded 1 Enoch from the canon of scripture (except in the Ethiopic church). On the other hand, 1 Enoch had a profound influence on New Testament (i.e., Christian) theology and was even quoted directly (Jude 14–15 is a quote from 1 Enoch 1:9). So, going forward, we will read from and comment on the Book of 1 Enoch on the last Sunday of each month. This month, we introduce the book and its five sections: The Book of Watchers (Chapters 1–36) — completed by about 300 BCThe Book of Parables (Chapters 37–71) — completed by about 4 BCThe Book of Luminaries (Chapters 72–82) — completed by about 200 BCThe Book of Dreams (Chapters 83–90) — written during Maccabean period (163–142 BC)Note: This includes the Animal Apocalypse (Chapters 85–90)The Epistle of Enoch (Chapters 91–108) — between 170 BC and 100 BC We discuss the authorship of Enoch, which can be traced to a group of Jews who returned from Babylon in the 5th century BC with a belief that the next phase of history was the construction of the temple prophesied by Ezekiel (Ezekiel chapters 40–42). They encountered resistance from the Zadokite priesthood in Jerusalem who believed that the age of prophecy had ended, and that salvation would come through their faithful adherence to the Law of Moses—keeping the feasts and performing the sacrificial rituals. The Enochians, on the other hand, believed that the world had been so corrupted by rebellious “sons of God”—the sinful angels mentioned by Peter (2 Peter 2:4) and Jude (Jude 6–7)—that only God's direct intervention would put things right.  That's the premise of the Book of 1 Enoch. Unfortunately we cannot send a text reply, so if thee would like to converse include thy email address. The notes from this podcast follow an abbreviated (verse by verse) summation of selected, important Greek words:   Henry begins the session by quickly reviewing and commenting on a phrase from 1 John 5:1: Verse 5:1When, in this First Epistle of John, the author uses the phrase, “born of God”, the Greek means a spiritual birth from God. The word, “of God” in the Greek, means “out of God”. Verses 5:6-12            The phrase in verse 6, “. . . water and blood” has various interpretations. Some see it as the water and blood that poured out of Jesus' side at His crucifixion; others look to the baptism of Jesus in water when He was immersed in the Spirit. The word, “blood” in Hebrew often refers to the life in something. Today, the English words, “life blood”, would have a similar meaning. As the discussion continues, Henry seems to land on the best interpretation being the human birth experience including both the breaking of the water in the mother immediately before birth begins, and the blood that accompanies a person's birth.   Verses 5:7-8            The group discusses at length the King James' Version (KJV) of verses 7 and 8:  7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. [Italics added for clarity] 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.  Henry indicates that the Textus Receptus Latin manuscript (from which the KJV was mostly translated), includes the above italicized words that comprise verse 7 in the KJV. But the words of verse seven appear in only eight manuscripts, most of which are far later than the hundreds and hundreds of the earliest known and most reliable manuscripts. The words of verse 7 are not found any of these earliest manuscripts: Syrian, Coptic, Armenian, Ethiopic, Arabic, Slavonic, Old Latin in its early form (as used by Tertullian, Cyprian, Augustine), nor in the Vulgate (as used by Jerome). Thus, it seems the words of verse seven (italicized above) may have originated from a marginal note added by a copyist to a manuscript at a later time. Then, later copyists mistakenly considered those words to be part of the original manuscript, and began to include them as though they had been in the original manuscript.  Verse 5:9            “Marturian” (the Greek word translated “witness” in the KJV), became our English word for “martyr”, since many Christians who were witnesses for Christ, ended up as martyrs as a because of their faith.     The advice in our introduction is from page 30 of the Ohio Yearly Meeting's Book of Discipline. To learn more about Ohio Yearly Meeting (Conservative) of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), please visit ohioyearlymeeting.org. The Kingless Generation
The origins of class society and revolutionary consciousness according to Second-Temple Judaism: 1 Enoch, Jubilees [PREVIEW]

The Kingless Generation

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2024 72:41

The rise of ancient empires in the Eurasian continent ushered in the Axial Age, with its ideologies of absolute good and evil and the promise of revolutionary recompense for unheard-of oppression by the Occupiers of the Earth (שכני הארץ). The books of 1 Enoch and Jubilees, quoted by name in the New Testament, still contained in the Bible of the Ethiopic churches, and exerting a massive influence over the entire Christian view of human history, have recently been re-edited and re-translated with reference to the Aramaic and Hebrew originals partially recovered from the Dead Sea scrolls. Their text shows a greater class consciousness than ever, declaring, “it was not ordained for a man to be a slave, nor was a decree given for a woman to be a handmaid: but it happened because of oppression. This lawlessness was not sent upon the earth: but men created it by themselves, and those who do it will come to a great curse,” (98:4) proclaiming, “woe to those who build their houses not with their own labors, and make the whole house of the stones and bricks of sin,” (99:13) while we workers “toiled and labored and were not masters of our labor; we became the food of the sinners.” (103:11) In response to this situation—ambiguously connected with the idea of God's angelic police (עירין “watchers”) and prosecutors (שׂטנין “accusers”) betraying Him and engaging in a kind of mafia side hustle which corrupted some humans so that they began to consume and exploit others—the patriarchs Enoch and Moses are given secret knowledge of the cosmic surveillance apparatus that will bring reward to the just, punishment to the rich, and justice to the victims of oppression. We engage in an extended meditation on the impact of these ideas as a weapon of class struggle, both from above and below, in late antique, medieval, capitalist, and our own techno-feudal times. Antediluvian Revelations: A Poetic Retelling of The Book of Enoch, The Prophet, Season One

This episode is Part Three, Canto One titled: "The Universal Laws of the Luminaries," and Part Three, Canto Two titled: Enoch's Homecoming and Guidance for His Family. This episode might be a little disappointing to some listeners because of its complexity. The third part of the Book of Enoch, the Prophet is very difficult to understand in its early English translation from the Ethiopic manuscript. All listeners must keep in mind that the content of this part has something very revealing, but it is still intentionally encrypted. In fact, the Antediluvian Revelation will be so surprising that the real truth of it all will eclipse all of the confusing content in these two cantos. Season three is composed of the three remaining parts of the poem, and they are shorter than those in Part One and Part Two.The Summary Discussion for Part Three is being revised and re-recorded as a video podcast available on YouTube, and the updated audio will be available here. The original Summary Discussion may still be found under the separated season, but the updates for Season Three will be posted here to replace the original recordings.

That is, of God the Father; not by creation only, as every man is; nor merely by calling grace, as is every regenerate person; but by office, as a preacher of the Gospel, being one that served God in the Gospel of his Son, and was an apostle of Christ; nor is this any sufficient objection to his being one, since others of the apostles so style themselves: and of the Lord Jesus Christ; the Ethiopic version reads this in connection with the former clause, without the copulative "and", "James, the servant of God, our Lord Jesus Christ": and so some consider the copulative as explanative of who is meant by God, even the Lord Jesus Christ: but it seems best to understand them as distinct; and that this apostle was not only the servant of God the Father, but of his Son Jesus Christ, and that in the same sense, referring to his office as an apostle of Christ, and minister of the word: to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad; by whom are meant believing Jews, who were of the several tribes of Israel, and which were in number "twelve", according to the number and names of the twelve patriarchs, the sons of Jacob; and these were not the Christian Jews, who were scattered abroad upon the persecution raised at the death of Stephen, Act_8:1 but they were the posterity of those who had been dispersed in former captivities, by the Assyrians and others, and who remained in the several countries whither they were carried, and never returned. The Jews say (f), that the ten tribes will never return, and that they will have no part nor portion in the world to come; but these the Gospel met with in their dispersion, and by it they were effectually called and converted, and are the same that Peter writes to, 1Pe_1:1 2Pe_1:1. And thus we read of an hundred and forty and four thousand sealed of all the tribes of Israel, Rev_7:4.

Unraveling The Words of Yahweh

In this week's study, I start in Chapter 11 verses 1-2. Keep in mind that at this point in time we are in the 6th trumpet, 5th seal, as we have learned in a prior study that the 6th seal, 7th trumpet and 7th vial all show the same events, Earthquakes, sun black, moon blood, stars fall, mountains islands move, Yahweh Wrath, great voices, lightings voices thunders and great hail.  John starts out with given a rod and told to measure the Temple of Yahweh and the altar and those that worship therein. However John was instructed not to measure the court outside the Temple. 1.            And there was given to me = by whom, it is not said. If Chapter 11 is a continuation of Chapter 10, then can we assume that it was the angel of 10:5, who was standing on the earth and sea? And there was given me a reed like unto a rod = A measuring reed, which with the Jews was six cubits long, Ezekiel 40:5; with the Greeks and Romans, ten feet long; the Ethiopic version here calls it a "golden reed", as in Rev. 21:15.Rise, and measure the Temple of God = Observe the word Temple it is (...) (naos), the holy place; not (...) (hieron), the temple-building as a whole.and the altar = In the Jewish temple the altar was the place where the worship centered. Without the altar worship was impossible, and the altar is taken as a symbol of the worship. And them what worship therein = Therefore there will be worshippers: and among the worshippers the 144,000 sealed for Divine protection; beside those who suffer martyrdom at the hands of the Beast, and those with whom he makes war.2.            But the court which is without the temple = Which is outside of the temple, and, therefore, which does not strictly pertain to it.Leave out = ‘cast out' The meaning is, that he was not to regard it as pertaining to the true temple of worshippers.given = by Yahweh's appointment.unto the Gentiles = In the wider sense, there are meant here “the times of the Gentiles,” wherein Jerusalem is “trodden down of the Gentiles,” as the parallel, Luke 21:24Forty two months = some may say 3 ½ years, which may be true. But we must take note that whenever we see months, we must consider the fact of lunar. I believe that Yahweh uses months to signify the fact that we should look at the lunar calendar. In a lunar month we have app. 29.503589 days, therefore in a calender years we have app. 354.37 days. Whereas the solar calendar is based on app. 30 days and 365 days in a year. Whenever you see lunar, this is always of darkness, which is Satan. Therefore these 42 months is of Satan. Now if we take the 42 months and multiply it by 29.503589 we have a total of app. 1239.150738 days. When we get to the 2 witnesses we shall read that their prophecies are in days. The reason so many people think Bible prophecy is incomprehensible is because they have made it so. Rather than recognizing the fact that Yahweh is as clear about the future as he is about the past and the present, many go to enormous lengths to avoid the normal meaning of Scripture, to look into the Old Testament and other passages to help explain the present passage and, in so doing, they impose upon the prophetic literature all manner of ridiculous and fanciful meanings that do make it incomprehensible. But, be like those in 2Timothy 2:15 ‘Study to shew thyself approved unto God (Yahweh), a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.'Join me as we go Chapter by Chapter, Verse by Verse, Unraveling the Words of Yahweh!Have any questions? 1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not,.... The proper deity and sonship of Christ, his true and real humanity, and his Messiahship; or any of his offices, doctrines, and ordinances; or his satisfaction and righteousness; or that peace, pardon, justification, life, and salvation, are by him; all which are meant by what follows, that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh:this clause is left out in the Ethiopic version, and that without hurting the sense, since it is easily supplied from the preceding verse; and the Alexandrian copy, and the Vulgate Latin version, only read "Jesus": and the latter reads the whole thus, "and every spirit that dissolves Jesus"; that separates the two natures, human and divine, in him, and makes two persons of them; or denies either of them, either that he is truly God, or really man, or denies him to be Jesus, the Saviour; who, as much as in him lies, destroys his person, office, and work, and makes void his obedience, sufferings, and death: is not of God;neither he nor his doctrine are of God; his doctrine cannot come from God, being contrary to the word of God; and he himself is neither born of God, nor on his side. And this is that spirit of antichrist:who is against Christ, or opposes himself to him; as he who denies his sonship, his deity, his humanity, his offices, and his grace, manifestly does; every doctrine that is calculated against these truths is the spirit and doctrine of antichrist: whereof you have heard that it should come, and even now already is it the world; in the false teachers, the forerunners of antichrist; See Gill on 1Jn_2:18.

By patiently bearing all afflictions, reproaches, indignities, and persecutions, enjoy yourselves; let nothing disturb or distress you; possess that peace and joy in your souls, which the world cannot take away; see Rom_5:3. The Vulgate Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions read, "ye shall possess": and the sense may be this; by patient continuance, or by perseverance in the ways of God, and the truths of Christ unto the end, ye shall be saved; shall find your lives, and enjoy your souls, as in Mat_10:22.

Saturday, 17 September 2022   Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, “Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come?” Acts 10:21   In the previous verse, the Spirit had told Peter to go down and go with the men who were at the gate and to not doubt. Now, the thought continues with, “Then Peter went down to the men.”   With immediate compliance to the word, he descended from the roof and proceeded to the gate. There, he met the men “who had been sent to him from Cornelius.” These words are not found in most manuscripts. John Gill notes that the clause “is not in Beza's most ancient copy, nor in the Alexandrian copy, nor in the Vulgate Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions.”   Despite this, it is already understood that this is who he is meeting. Whether the words are original or not, it does not leave any void in one's understanding concerning those whom Peter had gone down to meet. With this understood, Luke next records, “and said, ‘Yes, I am he whom you seek.'”   These words are in response to verse 10:19, which said, “While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, ‘Behold, three men are seeking you.'” Peter already knew that he was being sought. This was probably told to him again by those who met the three at the gate (as is seen in verses 17 & 18).   Therefore, he was certainly fully prepared to find out what was so important that God had given him a vision and that the Spirit had expressly spoken to him about the events that were now taking place. And so, probably very excitedly, he asked them, “For what reason have you come?”   The vision had left him with more questions than answers. The Spirit's directives had certainly hinted to him that the answers were to be found in the arrival of these three men, and so the question must have burst out of him like the breach of a dam. The inquisitive excitement of the moment will find its fulfillment in the verses ahead.   Life application: Peter wanted to know what the word of the Lord that had been conveyed to him meant, and so he asked those who had been sent (albeit indirectly) by the direction of the Lord to interpret the meaning of the matter.   The Lord does not give His word in a manner that cannot be determined, even if it takes a process to find out what that meaning is. Peter had to go through a process in order to understand what was being conveyed and so will we, but it is worth the time and effort to find out why things are the way they are in the word of God.   And so, when you come to an interesting passage or story in Scripture and think, “I wonder why the Lord included that in the Bible?”, don't just ignore it, but ask Him – “Lord, what is the meaning of this passage.” Then think about it, ask about it, and try connecting it to other things going on in Scripture. Eventually, you will come across a commentary, a sermon, or a personal insight that may bring you to understand that passage.   The Lord wants His word known and understood, and He will reward those who diligently seek it out.   Lord God, thank You for the many treasures laid up in Your word. It is a never-ending well of wonder and delight. The more we know and understand it, the more new insights it continues to provide. How great is Your word that gives us a lifetime of new and precious detail to consider! Amen.

For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website. This a well-known passage, even though it is not in the original manuscripts of John's gospel. This pericope is not written in the style of John, nor is it original to John.It is missing from the earliest Greek manuscripts of John. Of course this was the original language of the gospel, and evidence here should be weighed most heavily. It is missing also from the oldest Syriac manuscripts. The passage is found in the following manuscripts, though often with an asterisk or obelisk, indicating doubt as to its authenticity:The later Koine Greek manuscripts. The Latin Vulgate (c.400 AD) and some Old Latin manuscripts. The Ethiopic version. The writings of Augustine and Ambrose (c.400 AD).Codex D.It often does not appear at its present position. Other locations include:Following Luke 21:38.After John 7:36.After John 7:44.After 21:25.No eastern commentator mentions the passage before the 10th century, and no Greek commentator mentions the passage before the 12th century.Still, it rings true, is of early origin, and is therefore is found in most Bibles. Few scholars believe the account to misrepresent Jesus, even if it was not originally in its present location in John.[53 Then each of them went home, 8:1 while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them.As was Jesus' custom during the feasts, he taught in the day and stayed evenings somewhere on the Mount of Olives (v.1). He probably enjoyed the hospitality of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. (Search your concordance under Bethany.)The venue for his teaching was the temple complex. (And by forgiving the adulteress, he was challenging, "usurping," the authority of the priests.)The time was early morning, before the heat of the day.He taught in the seated position (v.2), which was the normal posture of a rabbi with his disciples.3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Then comes the shocking interruption (v.3).The question, and the arrest of the woman, seem staged.Since adultery takes place in secret, it is likely that the accusers had been waiting (and hoping) for the transgression to take place. Their posturing, like the adultery itself, was premeditated.Only the woman has been brought in, despite the implicit charge that the man had been present (v.4).The accusers have little concern for her.Their aim is only to trap Jesus.Would Jesus then contradict himself, or the Mosaic law? Here is the trap (vv.5-6).Jesus advocated compassion. He forbade us even to hate our enemies. He had intimated that the new covenant was in the process of being inaugurated -- that the old law might not apply anymore. And yet the Torah required the death penalty for both parties (Leviticus 20:10).Would contradict the Torah, or his own teaching?Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, sir.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again."]Masterfully, Jesus extricates both himself and the woman from the dilemma. His reply is perfectly suited to the occasion. Jesus was always an excellent thinker on his feet.About Jesus' writing in the dirt:Many have speculated what word(s) -- if any -- he wrote. He seems to be deflecting the attention from the woman and her accusers -- perhaps regaining control of the situation.Acknowledging the demand of the law for adulterers ("Let anyone without sin cast the first stone...") while confronting all present with their own sin (and potential hypocrisy in judging her) (v.7ff).Everyone in the group is challenged! The older in the crowd, realizing that Jesus occupies the moral high ground and will not be trapped, walk away. The younger in the crowd, less savvy and more moralistic, linger longer, but they too in the end leave the scene. The accusers apparently depart as well.In the end, only two persons remain. While offering her divine forgiveness, Jesus hardly condones her immorality. "Sin no more" (v.11).The heart-warming vignette demonstrates the church's attitude towards erring members.Sin will not be taken lightly, yet...... forgiveness is always available -- if there is repentance.ConclusionAlthough most NT scholars reject the story as original in the fourth gospel, they are also of one mind in accepting its veracity. It is perfectly in character with what we know of Jesus and his attitude towards sin/sinners.It is unlikely to be an invention of the later church, since in the second century sin was dealt with much more harshly than it is in this passage. Some early Christian preserved the story, and some early copyist of John placed it between chapters 7 and 8, probably because it seemed a good fit (verses about judgment, tensions between Jesus and the Pharisees). This passage is one of several understood by early Christians to forbid capital punishment. For example, consider the words of Lactantius (c.290-300 AD): When God forbids us to kill, he not only prohibits the violence that is condemned by public laws, but he also forbids the violence that is deemed lawful by men. Thus it is not lawful for a just man to engage in warfare, since his warfare is injustice itself. Nor is it [lawful] to accuse anyone of a capital offense. It makes no difference whether you put a man to death by word, or by the sword. It is the act of putting to death itself which is prohibited. Therefore, regarding this precept of God there should be no exception at all. Rather it is always unlawful to put to death a man, whom God willed to be a sacred creature. For more on this, see my article on The Death Penalty, or the various lessons on crime and punishment. Had I been present, which of the characters in this story would I have been: an older person, a younger person, the woman, or the accusers?

in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; his meaning is, that they might be led into all the wisdom of God, which is so largely displayed in the revelation of his will concerning the salvation of his people, which is made in the Gospel; which is the manifold wisdom of God, wherein he has abounded in all wisdom and prudence; and contains such a scheme of things, so wisely contrived and formed, that angels desire to look into it; and that they might have a "spiritual understanding" of the mysteries of grace, without which they cannot be discerned to spiritual advantage, nor indeed without the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of them: and the Ethiopic version renders it, by "the prudence of the Holy Ghost": who searches the deep things of God, and reveals them to the saints, and improves and increases their spiritual and experimental knowledge of them, which is what is here intended.

Parts of this version are found in the Talmud, the Koran, and elsewhere, showing what a vital rôle it played in the original literature of human wisdom. The Egyptian author first wrote in Arabic (which may be taken as the original manuscript) and that found its way farther south and was translated into Ethiopic. For the present English translation we are indebted to Dr. S. C. Malan, Vicar of Broadwindsor, who worked from the Ethiopic edition edited by Dr. E. Trumpp, Professor at the University of Munich. Also, what the Prophet Daniel revealed concerning geopolitical and economic policy as it possibly pertains to MultiNational Corporations (MNC's) in the future … and maybe today! _____________________________________ MORE END TIME SIGNS FOR ISRAEL & NATIONSDANIEL PROPHECY OF GEOPOLITICAL LEADERS Let's look at some NEW signs that are actually OLD signs. Messiah Yeshua said: “And as it came to pass in the days of Noah, even so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise even as it came to pass in the days of Lot, they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. After the same manner shall it be in the day that the Son of man is revealed.” ‒ Luke 17:26-30 If you study both of the Torah contexts closely that Jesus referred to—Genesis Chapter 6 for Noah … and Genesis Chapter 19 for Lot—even a casual perusal gives evidence that great wickedness was present on the earth. In Genesis 6:5 we read, “And the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of people's hearts was only evil continually.” In Genesis Chapter 19 we see that God judges Sodom because of the prevalence of homosexuality being practiced there. When the two angels from God came to Lot's house to deliver him and his family, we read: “But before they lay down, the men of the city, [even] the men of Sodom, compassed the house around, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; and they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men that came in to you tonight? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them. And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. And he said, I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly. Behold now, I have two daughters that have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing, for as much as they are come under the shadow of my roof.” The homosexuals in the city wanted to practice perversity on the two men who were Lot's guests―they did NOT know they were angels. This was deemed such wickedness by Lot that he was willing even to let the men abuse his own daughters in exchange for the safety of the men (the angels). So we see that in both contexts there was great wickedness―which will also be prevalent upon the earth in the End Times. The Book of Revelation, also, tell us great wickedness will be prevalent. However, there is something extra concerning the “Days of Noah.” “And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all that they chose. And Jehovah said, My spirit shall not strive with man for ever, for that he also is flesh: yet shall his days be a hundred and twenty years. The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them: the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown. And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of people was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of people was only evil continually.” – Genesis 6:1-5 This brings to question: Who were the Nephilim? And, who were the “sons of God” spoken of in context here? In the Book of Job, verse 6, we read: “Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, it was that Satan also came among them.” Notice TWO (2) things: The Hebrew phrase for “sons of God”―”bnai Elohim”―always refers to “angelic host” but does NOT differentiate between holy angels or fallen angels. It does NOT refer to humans as “children [or] sons of God.” Also, in Genesis 6:12 we read, “And God saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.” But, Noah was a righteous man with a wife and three sons and their three wives, who found favor in the eyes of the LORD. Evidently the seed line—the DNA—of the human race had become so corrupt that God had to destroy the whole earth, except for Noah and his family. Possibly Noah's faith―anointed by Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit)―protected him from corruption of his DNA. Since we know that good—or holy—angels would NOT have been involved in the seduction or sexual intercourse with “the daughters of men,” it would have been “fallen angels.” In the Book of Jude we see more light on this. “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” (Jude verses 6 and 7) We see references to both signs of the End Times which Messiah Jesus talked about: ■ The days of Noah; and, ■ The days of Lot. However, notice that Jude mentions “angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation.” Another translation would be, “the angels that did not keep within their original authority, but abandoned their proper sphere …”—or—“the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode.” It is this author's opinion that The Living Bible has an accurate paraphrase of Jude:1-4: “Now a population explosion took place upon the earth. It was at this time that beings from the spirit world looked upon the beautiful earth women and took any they desired to be their wives. Then Jehovah said, “My Spirit must not forever be disgraced in man, wholly evil as he is. I will give him 120 years to mend his ways.” In those days, and even afterwards, when the evil beings from the spirit world were sexually involved with human women, their children became giants, of whom so many legends are told.” – TLB These giants were the Nephilim. When Joshua went into the Promised Land he and the Israelites encountered the Rephaim and Nephilim. Remember, David killed Goliath, a giant of nine feet in height. Here is another thing―although NOT scripture―that is worth considering: Every prominent ancient culture has stories of beings―usually referred to in some manner―as gods who interfaced with humans; that is, part human–part angel … or hybrid beings! Other ancient textual writings, such as the Book of Enoch, relate the belief of a mixed race of part human–part angel beings referred to as "Watchers." Several almost complete copies of the Book of Enoch in Aramaic were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and it is clear that whoever collected the scrolls considered it a vitally important text. Even more intriguing is the fact that additional, previously unknown or little-known texts about Enoch were discovered at Qumran among the findings with the Dead Sea Scrolls. The most important of these is The Book of Giants. However, it is the opinion of this author that The Book of Giants is NOT a trustworthy source as many scholars consider the older sections―mainly in The Book of the Watchers―to date from about 300 BCE. Conversely, there are those who give credence to the Book of Enoch, as we shall next discuss. The Book of Enoch was still in existence centuries before the birth of Christ. It was considered scripture by many early Christians. The earliest literature of the so-called “Church Fathers” was filled with references to it. The Second and Third Century “Church Fathers”―Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origin and Clement of Alexandria―all quoted from the Book of Enoch. Tertullian (160-230 CE) referred to the Book of Enoch as “Holy Scripture.” The Ethiopic Church even added the Book of Enoch to its official canon. It was widely known and read the first three centuries after Christ. However, it became―along with many other books―discredited after the Council of Laodicea. Thereafter it was not disseminated until around the time of the Protestant Reformation. Then, there was a revived interest in the Book of Enoch. By the late 15th Century rumors began to spread that somewhere a copy of the long lost Book of Enoch might still exist. During this time many books arose claiming to be the long lost book and were later found to be forgeries. The return of the long lost Book of Enoch to the modern Western World is credited to the famous explorer James Bruce, who in 1773 returned from six years in Abyssinia with three Ethiopic copies of the lost Book of Enoch. So now ... let me ask you a question: Are the Nephilim: Still here? Coming back? Not only do we see TODAY the altering of gene lines in GRIN Technology and Synthetic Biology, BUT … we also have seen external players—other worldly beings—altering gene lines (DNA) of the human race in the past. WHY? The answer (with reference to Satanic motives) is the same NOW as it was THEN: ■ To destroy the Messianic bloodline. Originally to keep Messiah from being born. In the End Times, to stop Messiah's return. ■ To “hatch” a breed of rebels. People who will be subservient to Satan. Candidates for 10 Regional Leaders. The arch-enemy of Israel―and of humankind―will throw everything he can at Planet Earth before his prophesied demise by Mashiach. The Jewish prophet Yochanan in Brit Chadashah (Hebrew New Testament), Chapter 17, shows that the New Global Governance Leader―the FALSE messiah (NOT the REAL Messiah)―will join to himself [at first be part of] ten geopolitical leaders to assist in his End Time policies. We also have record in Tanakh of the same in the Book of Daniel, Chapter Seven, verses 23-25. These ten kings are ten geopolitical entities that have NOT existed before. They will make up a global alliance newly organized out of which the FALSE messiah will evolve. They will assist the New Global Leader in the―foolish and failed―attempt at opposing the return of the REAL Mashiach. Could some of the powerful executives of MNC's (MultiNational Corporations) provide the “work source” for the “10 Kings” referred to ten times in the Holy Bible? In Tanakh, Book of Daniel, we read, “He … will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over people and will distribute the land at a price.” (Daniel 11:39, NIV.) This is from a portion of Daniel's prophetic description of the implementations of the New Global Governance Leader―the FALSE mashiach (anti-christ). Daniel prophesies that “elites” of some status will receive mega rewards for their support of this end-time incarnate spirit of Satan. Specific KEY people who acknowledge him and accept his authority will receive a reward of land. “Land” in its Aramaic form used here would also include “economic domain, property or geographic area.” These “elites” are bought off for their loyalty … and made rulers over many! HaShem gave us prophecy so we could know where we are at ... know where we are going ... know what's happening today ... and know what's happening in the future! Our job is to listen and obey … to work with Him in obedience for the salvation of Israel. PRAY, ask the LORD what He would have YOU to do. It's time for The Institute (Mossad) to utilize agents who are filled with Ruach HaKodesh to initiate cyber infiltration of MNC (MultiNational Corporation) leaders and CEOs in order to monitor activity with regard to global and geopolitical control. Also, what the Prophet Daniel revealed concerning End Time economic policy as it pertains to geopolitical entities and possibly MultiNational Corporations (MNC's) in the future … and maybe today! _______________________   NEW SIGNS FOR ISRAEL AND THE GOYIM MASHIACH, MOSSAD AND MESSAGES   Let's look at some NEW signs that are actually OLD signs. After the same manner shall it be in the day that the Son of man is revealed.” ‒ Brit Chadashah: Luke 17:26-30 If you study both of the Torah contexts closely that Jesus referred to—Genesis Chapter 6 for Noah … and Genesis Chapter 19 for Lot—even a casual perusal gives evidence that great wickedness was present on the earth. So we see that in both contexts (Noah and Lot) there was great wickedness ... which will also be prevalent upon the earth in the End Times. Possibly Noah's faith, anointed by Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit), protected him from corruption of his DNA. WHY? The answer (with reference to Satanic motives) is the same NOW as it was THEN: ■ To “hatch” a breed of rebels. People who will be subservient to Satan. Candidates for 10 Regional Leaders. The arch-enemy of Israel―and of humankind―will throw everything he can at Planet Earth before his prophesied demise by Mashiach. The Jewish prophet Yochanan in Brit Chadashah (Hebrew New Testament), Revelation: Chapter 17, shows that the New Global Governance Leader―the FALSE messiah (NOT the REAL Messiah)―will join to himself [at first be part of] ten geopolitical leaders to assist in his End Time policies. Could some of the powerful executives of MNC's (Multi National Corporations) provide the “work source” for the “10 Kings” referred to ten times in the Holy Bible? In Tanakh, Book of Daniel, we read, “He … will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over people and will distribute the land at a price.” (Daniel 11:39, NIV.) This is from a portion of Daniel's prophetic description of the implementations of the New Global Governance Leader―the FALSE mashiach (anti-christ). Daniel prophesies that “elites” of some status will receive mega rewards for their support of this end-time incarnate spirit of Satan. Specific KEY people who acknowledge him and accept his authority will receive a reward of land. “Land” in its Aramaic form used here would also include “economic domain, property or geographic area.” _______________________ THESE "ELITES" ARE BOUGHT OFF FOR THEIR LOYALTY TO THE NEW GLOBAL GOVERNANCE LEADER AND MADE RULERS OVER MANY _______________________ HaShem gave us prophecy so we could know where we are at ... know where we are going ... know what's happening today ... and know what's happening in the future! Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible For the fruit of the Spirit,.... Either of the spirit of man, as renewed, or rather of the Spirit of God; the allusion is to fruits of trees: the believer is a tree of righteousness; Christ is his root; the Spirit is the sap, which supports and nourishes; and good works, under the influence of his grace, are the fruit: the Alexandrian copy, and some others, and the Vulgate Latin, Syriac, and Ethiopic versions, read "the fruit of light"; which agrees with the preceding words: and the genuine fruit of internal grace, or light, is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth; the fruit of "goodness", lies in sympathizing with persons in distress; in assisting such according to the abilities men have in a readiness to forgive offences and injuries; and in using meekness and candour in admonishing others: "righteousness" lies in living in obedience to the law of God; in attending the worship and service of him; and in discharging our duty to our fellow creatures; and this as goodness, is very imperfect, and not to be boasted of, or trusted to, nor is salvation to be expected from it: "truth" is opposed to lying, to hypocrisy, to error and falsehood; and where the Spirit of God, and the work of grace are, there will be more or less an appearance of these fruits.

Mr. Montague Rhodes James was a medievalist scholar and provost of both King's College and Eton College. His stories have a strong foundation in historical research with an element of truth at their core, making their plots almost believable. The main characters of his tales are often archaeologists or antiquaries. This was fitting, for in 1902, M.R. James himself discovered a manuscript fragment which led to excavations in the ruins of the abbey at Bury St Edmunds, in which the graves of several twelfth-century abbots were rediscovered, having been lost since the Dissolution of the Monasteries. He also catalogued many of the manuscript libraries of the University of Cambridge and translated the Book of Baruch from its original Ethiopic in 1879. Being such an authority in the experiences of historical research puts him in a league all of his own when it comes to ghost stories and you feel as if you can just reach out and touch the characters of his gripping plots. Available @ https://www.FlatWaterFlatEarth.com According to the theory of R. H. Charles,[16] the text incorporates three distinct sections, each once a separate work that is a single compilation here. Of these, one, the first, appears to have been written by a Jewish author, and the other two by Christians. According to this author, The Martyrdom consists of: Ch. i. 1-2a, 6b-13a; ii. 1-iii. 12; v. 1b-14. Ch. iii. 13b-iv. 18 are to be counted as a separate work, added by the first editor of the entire work, probably before the "Greek Legend" and the Latin translation were written. The Vision comprises ch. vi. 1-xi. 40, ch. xi. 2-22 being thus an integral part of this section. Editorial additions are: ch. i. 2b-6a, 13b; ii. 9; iii. 13a; iv. 1a, 19-22; v. 1a, 15-16; xi. 41-43. E. Norelli suggests on the contrary that the whole text, even if written in different times, is the expression of a docetic Christian prophetic group related with the group attacked by Ignatius of Antioch in his letters to the Smyrnaeans and to the Trallians.[17] According to this scholar chapters 6-11 (the Vision) are older than chapters 1-5 (which represent a later pessimistic introduction to the original Vision), the date of composition is the end of the 1st century AD, and the narrative of Mary's pregnancy (AI 11:2-5) is independent from the Gospel of Matthew.[18] Recently, other scholars have rejected characterizing the Ascension of Isaiah as a docetic text.[19] Manuscript tradition The text exists as a whole in three Ge'ez manuscripts of around the 15th-18th centuries, but fragments have also survived in Greek, Coptic, Latin, and Old Church Slavonic. All three component texts appear to have been in Greek, and it is possible that the "Martyrdom of Isaiah" derives from a Hebrew or Aramaic original. Comparison of the various translations suggests that two different recensions of the Greek original must have existed; one on which the Ethiopic and one of the Latin versions were based, and the other on which the Slavonic and the other Latin version were based. Fragments of both Greek versions have survived. The work's current title is derived from the title used in the Ethiopic manuscripts ('Ergata Īsāyèyās – "The Ascension of Isaiah"). In antiquity, Epiphanius also referred to it by this title (in Greek: Τὸ Αναβατικὸν Ἡσαΐου), as did Jerome (in Latin: Ascensio Isaiæ). A prophecy of the end times, the destruction or unfolding of the tent of the firmamental tabernacle and the angelic forces that maintain the works of the earth. This text has incredible prophecy in it about the end times. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night,.... That is, the Lord will come in that day, which he has fixed, according to his promise, than which nothing is more certain; and he will come as a thief in the night: he will come "in the night", which may be literally understood; for as his first coming was in the night; see Luk_2:8; so perhaps his second coming may be in the night season; or figuratively, when it will be a time of great darkness; when there will be little faith in the earth, and both the wise and foolish virgins will be slumbering and sleeping; when it will be a season of great security, as it was in the days of Noah, and at the time of the burning of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Vulgate Latin, Syriac, and Ethiopic versions, leave out the phrase, "in the night": and the Alexandrian copy uses the emphatic article, "in the night": and he will come, "as a thief", in the dark, indiscernibly; it will not be known what hour he will come; he will come suddenly, at an unawares, when he is not expected, to the great surprise of men, and especially of the scoffers; when the following awful things will be done:  in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise; not the third heaven, the seat of angels and glorified saints, and even of God himself; but the starry and airy heavens, which shall pass away, not as to their matter and substance, but as to some of their accidents and qualities, and the present use of them; and that with a great noise, like that of a violent storm, or tempest; though the Ethiopic version renders it, "without a noise"; and which is more agreeable to his coming as a thief, which is not with noise, but in as still a manner as possible; and some learned men observe, that the word signifies swiftly, as well as with a noise; and, accordingly, the Syriac version renders it "suddenly"; and the Arabic version "presently", immediately

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved,.... This is an inference from the instance and example of Christ; that since he, who was God over all, blessed for ever, made himself so low in human nature, in which he is now so highly exalted, having done the work and business he came about with such condescension, humility, and meekness; therefore it becomes those who profess to be his followers, to do all their affairs as men and Christians, with, and among one another, in all lowliness of mind. The apostle calls the saints here, "my beloved", he having a strong affection for them, which he frequently expresses in this epistle; and he chooses to make use of such an endearing appellation, that it might be observed, that what he was about to say to them sprung from pure love to them, and a hearty desire for their welfare, and from no other end, and with no other view; and to encourage them to go on in a course of humble duty, he commends them for their former obedience,  as ye have always obeyed; not "me", as the Arabic and Ethiopic versions supply; but either God, acting according to his revealed will, they had knowledge of; or Christ, by receiving him as prophet, priest, and King, by submitting to his righteousness, and the sceptre of his grace; or the Gospel, by embracing the truths of it, professing them, and abiding in them, and by subjecting to the ordinances of it, and doing all things whatsoever Christ has commanded: and this they did "always"; they were always abounding in the works of the Lord, doing his will; they abode by Christ, and continued steadfastly in his doctrines, and kept the ordinances as they were delivered to them, and walked in all the commandments of the Lord blameless,  Not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence; which clause may either be referred to the foregoing, which expresses their obedience; and so signifies that that was carefully and cheerf

1 John 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good,.... The possessions of this world, worldly substance, the temporal good things of it; for there are some things in it, which are honestly, pleasantly, and profitably good, when used lawfully, and not abused, otherwise they are to the owner's hurt: or "the living of this world"; that which the men of the world give up themselves to, are bent upon, and pursue after; or on which men live, and by which life is maintained, and preserved, and made comfortable in the present state of things; such as meat, drink, apparel, money, houses, lands, &c. The Ethiopic version renders it, "he that hath the government of this world"; as if it pointed at a person that is in some high office of worldly honour and profit, and is both great and rich; but the words are not to be restrained to such an one only, but refer to any man that has any share of the outward enjoyments of life; that has not only a competency for himself and family, but something to spare, and especially that has an affluence of worldly substance; but of him that has not, it is not required; for what a man distributes ought to be his own, and not another's, and in proportion to what he has, or according to his ability: and seeth his brother have need; meaning, not merely a brother in that strict and natural relation, or bond of consanguinity; though such an one in distress ought to be, in the first place, regarded, for no man should hide himself from, overlook and neglect his own flesh and blood; but any, and every man, "his neighbour", as the Ethiopic version reads, whom he ought to love as himself; and especially a brother in a spiritual relation, or one that is of the household of faith: if he has need; that is, is naked and destitute of daily food, has not the common supplies of life, and what nature requires; and also, whose circumstances are low and mean,

Book of Enoch by RH Charles (Audio).  The Book of Enoch written prior to 300 BC, it is an ancient Jewish religious work, ascribed by tradition to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah, although modern scholars estimate the older sections (mainly in the Book of the Watchers) to date from about 300 BC, and the latest part (Book of Parables) probably to the first century BC Background on the Book of Enoch (wikipedia extract). Judaism: Although evidently widely knownduring the development of the Hebrew Bible canon,1 Enoch was excluded from both the formal canon of the Tanakh andthe typical canon of the Septuagint and therefore, also from the writings knowntoday as the Deuterocanon. One possible reasonfor Jewish rejection of the book might be the textual nature of several earlysections of the book that make use of material from the Torah; for example,1 En 1 is a midrash of Deuteronomy 33.The content, particularly detailed descriptions of fallen angels, would also be a reason for rejection from the Hebrew canon at thisperiod – as illustrated by the comments of Trypho the Jew when debatingwith Justin Martyr on this subject. Trypho:"The utterances of God are holy, but your expositions are merecontrivances, as is plain from what has been explained by you; nay, evenblasphemies, for you assert that angels sinned and revolted from God."(Dialogue 79)   Christianity: By the 4th century, the Book of Enochwas mostly excluded from Christian canons, and it is now regarded as scripture byonly the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Church.   References in the New Testament: Enoch is referred to as a historicalperson and prophet, and quoted, in Jude 1:14–15: And Enoch also, theseventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh withten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convict all thatare ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodlycommitted, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spokenagainst him. Compare this with Enoch 1:9,translated from the Ethiopic (found also in Qumran scroll 4Q204=4QEnochc ar, col I16–18). And behold! Hecometh with ten thousands of His Saints To execute judgment upon all, And todestroy all the ungodly: And to convict all flesh Of all the works of theirungodliness which they have ungodly committed, And of all the hard things whichungodly sinners have spoken against Him. Compare this also with what may bethe original source of 1 En 1:9 in Deuteronomy 33:2: The Lord came fromSinai and dawned from Seir upon us; he shone forth from Mount Paran; he camefrom the ten thousands of Saints, with flaming fire at his right hand. Under the heading of canonicity, itis not enough to merely demonstrate that something is quoted. Instead, it isnecessary to demonstrate the nature of the quotation. In the case of theJude 14 quotation of 1 Enoch 1:9, it would be difficult to argue that Judedoes not quote Enoch as an historical prophet since he cites Enoch by name. However, there remains a question as to whether the author of Jude attributedthe quotation believing the source to be the historical Enoch before the floodor a midrash ofDeut 33:2–3. The Greek text might seem unusual in stating that "Enochthe Seventh from Adam" prophesied "to" (dative case)not "of" (genitive case) the men, however, this might indicate theGreek meaning “against them” - the dative τούτοις as a dativus incommodi(dative of disadvantage). Peter H. Davids points to Dead SeaScrolls evidence but leaves it open as to whether Jude viewed 1 Enoch ascanon, deuterocanon, or otherwise: "Did Jude, then, consider thisscripture to be like Genesis or Isaiah? Certainly he did consider it authoritative,a true word from God. We cannot tell whether he ranked it alongside otherprophetic books such as Isaiah and Jeremiah. What we do know is, first, thatother Jewish groups, most notably those living in Qumran near the Dead Sea,also used and valued 1 Enoch, but we do not find it grouped with thescriptural scrolls." The attribution "Enoch theSeventh from Adam" is apparently itself a section heading taken from1 Enoch (1 En 60:8, Jude 1:14a) and not from Genesis Also, it has been alleged that 1 Peter, (in 1Peter 3:19–20)and 2 Peter (in 2Peter 2:4–5)make reference to some Enochian material. Reception: The Book of Enoch was considered asscripture in the Epistle of Barnabas (16:4) and by many ofthe early Church Fathers, such as Athenagoras, Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus and Tertullian, who wrotec. 200 that the Book of Enoch had been rejected by the Jews because itcontained prophecies pertaining to Christ.[29] However,later Fathers denied the canonicity of the book, and some even considered theEpistle of Jude uncanonical because it refers to an "apocryphal"work.

Ngugi wa Thiong’o, who famously made the decision in the 1970s to henceforth only produce his creative work in his native Gikuyu, rather than in English, authors the foreword to Listening to Ourselves: A Multilingual Anthology of African Philosophy (SUNY Press, 2013), which he calls a “historic intervention in the debates about African philosophy.” The collection offers a balanced representation, along an east-west axis, of the continent, with essays in Luo, Gikuyu, Amharic, Igbo, Akan (also known as Twi), and Wolof. The dual-language format allows readers to see the text (including Ethiopic script) as written by the authors, with the English translation on the facing page. In this engaging interview, Chike Jeffers, editor of Listening to Ourselves, describes the genesis of the anthology and the project’s import for the expression and dissemination of African thought, going forward.
