What is friluftsliv, the perfect Norwegian lifestyle trend for winter?

Last weekend brought snowfall across much of the United Kingdom, offering a clear sign that winter is here. Now with temperatures this low, the instinct for many of us may be to cuddle up in bed under a blanket. But the subject of today's episode is all about getting outdoors whatever the weather. Friluftsliv is a Norwegian term that more or less translates as “open-air living”. You could call it the outdoor equivalent of Denmark's hygge, which is all about finding comfort indoors. Indeed, Norway has strong outdoor traditions all year round, even when days are short during the winter. Friluftsliv is so ingrained in Norwegian culture that universities offer bachelor's degree courses in it, and it's protected by law through the Outdoors Recreation Act.  Where does it come from? What about us city dwellers? How can we embrace friluftsliv in our local area? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: Can standing on one leg save your life? In Scandinavia, daily interaction with nature has helped turn many people into passionate advocates for the environment. But there are forces at play in American society that divide humans from nature. To name just a few? Schools cut recess to make more time for academic instruction, cities boast sprawl over walkability, and our societal reverence for cleanliness prevents many Americans from getting outside and getting a little dirty. Best-selling author Linda McGurk was born in Sweden and, later, raised her own children in the US. Linda is on the show to highlight the ways in which the two cultures diverge with regard to interacting with and respecting the natural world; she also offers both the encouragement and the how-to to get outside in all weather. God lytting!Vi trenger din hjelp for å fortsette å lage Hverdagspsyken!

Send us a textScandinavian countries are famously cold, beautiful places, and their people rank highly in terms of happiness compared to the rest of the world.Tim Rayborn, author of The Scandinavian Guide to Happiness, explains the Scandinavian concepts that cultivate this sense of happiness many are longing for.We begin our conversation with the Swedish principle Lagom, a phrase meaning "just enough." This concept takes moderation to a new level, applying not only to consumables and activities but also to relationships and the workplace (looking at you, workaholics!).Ever felt the need to break away and touch grass? The Norwegian concept Friluftsliv is ingrained in their culture, emphasizing being outside and connecting with nature as part of everyday life. It's no surprise, especially when you realize that over 50% of the world's population lives in urban areas plagued by mental illness and stress.Hygge and Lykke are Danish phrases for comfort and joy, simple ways to create happiness and a sense of safety. These ideas are grounded in time well spent and cozy, safe havens—not driven by consumerism and expensive lifestyles. Finally, we discuss the Finnish principle Sisu, which describes incredible resolve and fortitude, as well as the Icelandic phrase Þetta reddast, loosely translated as "whatever, it's fine." Don't be fooled by these ideas—while they suggest that things may not always work out, they encourage the belief that, even when faced with more than you can handle, you will overcome. These concepts from Scandinavia arise from an overarching emphasis on collaboration for the common good. Tim and I have an interesting discussion on how these communal values impact individual freedoms and how many other societies fail to prioritize the right things for true freedom. When you think of a guide to happiness, you might picture something bubbly and energetic, or perhaps full of big goals and checklists. But in this conversation, these principles lead to a sense of humble, simple contentment.Send this episode to a friend who could use a guiding light for quiet, gentle happiness. What's Inside:Scandinavian concepts that embody happiness.Phrases from all over the rugged north that explain why people can be happy in such a harsh environment. Are countries like the USA prioritizing the wrong freedoms?Simple, humble attributes of contentment.Creating a happy life beyond consumerism. Is it possible to embody these Scandinavian concepts of happiness in a society that doesn't support these ideologies? There's a reason homesteading and homeschooling often go hand-in-hand. We recognize the shortcomings in the system and want to create a better childhood and a better future for our kids—one where they are free to be creative, healthy, active, smart, resilient, and resourceful. But as simple as that kind of life sounds, it's not always easy.  Today's podcast guest gets it. Ginny Yurich is the genius behind the 1000 Hours Outside movement and the author of the upcoming book Until the Streetlights Come On! Ginny discovered the benefits of unstructured outside play when her children were small. She was surprised to find that most children spend 1200 hours every year on a screen, and she began experimenting with the idea of spending hours upon hours outside with her kids in response to that notion. Ginny talks about the technological advances and modern-day comforts that are actually harming our children's health, and social, mental, emotional, and physical development. Enjoying and respecting the outdoors is not exactly a skill that's being preached to our young people. There's this great big world out there at our fingertips, but we're all more concerned with what's happening on Instagram and in our email. I know, this sounds preachy. I don't mean it to be that way, but I think it is important for us to get outside more. I spoke with Linda Akeson McGurk about her new book 'THE OPEN AIR LIFE: DISCOVER THE NORDIC ART OF FRILUFTSLIV AND EMBRACE NATURE EVERY DAY.' The Nordic people have an immense respect for the outdoors and they understand how we live within the natural world. There also are a lot of health benefits that come from spending more time outdoors.I really enjoyed this conversation with Linda and I'm glad it will be my last interview of 2022. Linda McGurk is a Swedish-American freelance writer and author of the book, There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather: A Scandinavian Mom's Secrets for Raising Healthy, Resilient and Confident Kids. Linda is a passionate advocate for the Nordic outdoor tradition friluftsliv and believes that the best childhood memories are created outside, while jumping in puddles, digging in dirt, catching bugs and climbing trees. Her latest book, The Open-Air Life: Discover the Nordic Art of Friluftsliv and Connect with Nature Every Day was published earlier this month. In this conversation, we discuss Linda's experiences parenting bilingual and bicultural daughters, as well as her own experiences with bilingualism and biculturalism. We talk about the Nordic preschool curriculum and parallels with the Montessori approach to early childhood. We also talk about the benefits of being outside, for both children and adults, and how we can motivate ourselves to spend more time outdoors. If you have a question about anything related to Montessori and multilingualism that you'd like me to answer on one of these episodes, you can send me a message on Instagram or email me. I loved learning more about this concept (and cultural differences) from Linda Åkeson McGurk, and author and mother who has raised children in the US and Scandinavia in her new book The Open-Air Life. Seems like we are programmed for MOTION first and then rest after the movement has provided its calming effect. Friluftsliv  is a Norwegian word that translates roughly as “open air life.” A way of life, an entire philosophy that celebrates the commitment to being outdoors, no matter one's age or physical condition. Connection, calm & clarity comprise the three legs on the stool of positive benefits. Or how about relax, refresh & re-energize.

We will learn: How to adopt and teach the scandinavian's relationship with nature.  How to change your mindset around bad weather.  The little known benefits of unstructured nature play. My husband always says to me, “there's no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing.” To which my usual reply is, “That's absolutely and utter bullshit, it's frigid outside and it makes me want to die.”   Okay a little dramatic I know, but my spirit animal is cozy and I like hot tea and fuzzy slippers and warm baths and my husband seems to get off on cold hard steel and I just don't get it, okay?   But I want an expansive mindset that enables me to go or live anywhere so I'm learning to appreciate all that nature has to offer.    My husband's family is in Michigan, and if you know anything about that state, the running joke is “Don't like the weather? Wait a minute.”   But when there is a beautiful day, they enjoy it.  The whole summer is spent outside. They spend time really curating their yards, which are forests, making it an even more beautiful and welcome place to be.  Maybe all the gloomy days make the sunny days even brighter.    So how do we pass on the gift of appreciating nature and all that it entails, regardless of its temperature?   That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Linda McGurk, journalist, blogger, and author of the parenting memoir “There's No Such Thing As Bad Weather: A Scandinavian Mom's Secrets for Raising Healthy, Resilient, and Confident Kids” (from Friluftsliv to Hygge).
