Body language is a silent orchestra, as people constantly give clues to what they're thinking and feeling. Non-verbal messages including body movements, facial expressions, vocal tone and volume, and other signals are collectively known as body language. Microexpressions (brief displays of emotion on the face), hand gestures, and posture all register in the human brain almost immediately—even when a person is not consciously aware they have perceived anything. For this reason, body language can strongly color how an individual is perceived, and how he or she, in turn, interprets others' motivation, mood, and openness. It's natural to mirror; beginning as soon as infancy, a newborn moves its body to the rhythm of the voice he hears. Body language is a vital form of communication, but most of it happens below the level of conscious awareness. When you wait for a blind date to arrive, for instance, you may nervously tap your foot without even realizing that you're doing it. Similarly, when you show up to meet your date, you may not consciously perceive that your date appears closed-off, but your unconscious mind may pick up on the crossed arms or averted gaze. Luckily, with knowledge and a little practice, it is possible to exert some measure of control over your own body language and to become more skilled at reading others. Tune in and learn how to talk in the world around you!

Annie Särnblad is a preeminent global speaker and expert in reading facial expressions. She is Certified in the Facial Action Coding System “FACS” and can numerically code the 10,000 muscle combinations in human expression. She has developed her own easy-to-absorb teaching techniques based on the knowledge she accumulated living in 9 countries and studying 8 languages through immersion. Annie has a Master's in Cultural Anthropology, and has lived across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and is currently living in Boston. Annie raised her three children as human lie detectors - by taking them out into Singapore on a daily basis and live narrating human's faces in real-time in Swedish. Over almost ten years, she and her children simplified the identifiers and locations of each emotion on the face down to the briefest flicker of muscle movement. Microexpressions are the subconscious “leakage” of emotion that makes “unspoken” feelings visible. They are universal to our species and not dependent on culture. In a negotiation, reading microexpressions allows us to gain insight into the other person's position that is invisible to most people. This ability to identify the subtle changes in the mood of the person we are talking to allows us to observe how a conversation is going - as it is happening - so that we can instantly adjust our behavior and improve the negotiation outcome. Reading and responding well to another person's needs and wants greatly influences their desire to close a deal on both a conscious and subconscious level. Connect with her on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annie-sarnblad/

In this episode, Annie talks about the importance of understanding microexpressions in business. She also discusses some of the most observable expressions that would enable business people to assess the situation properly and make necessary adjustments when needed.   Why you have to check out today's podcast: Learn about the science behind facial microexpressions Discover how understanding facial microexpressions could help you in your business Acquire knowledge about the most common microexpressions and how to capitalize on them when you are in a business meeting   “My piece of advice is for any business to recognize the importance that pricing can play in reaching their growth targets and objectives and making sure that they recognize that pricing has to be rooted in value.” – Annie Sarnblad   Topics Covered: 01:42 – Annie explains her skill of being a “human lie detector” 04:11 – The science behind reading facial microexpressions 08:32 – You have no control over facial microexpressions; it just shows 12:19 – No one can really just “smile” for the camera, except when they are actually happy 14:04 – Annie doesn't remember static faces, only the muscle movements 18:43 – Observing the pupil is the easiest to learn because we are already looking at the eyes 22:02 – Why Annie wanted to learn how to read microexpressions 24:30 – Always look out for “disgust” or the “no” face when you are in a meeting 26:16 – Seeing the “no” face means that you have a choice to make 28:57 – How simply looking for pupil dilation could help you pivot from one topic to another and increase your price 31:05 – Annie's pricing advice   Key Takeaways: “Muscle movement precedes the thought process. Even somebody like me that's hyper-trained and thinks about this 24/7, I can't stop myself from making the micro expressions unless I change my thought patterns and think about something else.” – Annie Sarnblad “Nobody's ever felt cheerful when they get an order to smile.” – Annie Sarnblad “If we're building strategy, we can have incredibly intelligent, high-level strategic brains and know the business, know the industry, know the players. But if we're not understanding how the players are interacting with each other, what their primary motivations are, what's in it for them, if we don't understand what's under the surface, we're basing our strategy on the wrong things.” – Annie Sarnblad “Once people have a vocabulary for the stuff that they see all the time, they then can have a much higher-level conversation.” – Annie Sarnblad “I think people just are so rushed to get everything closed immediately that they sometimes don't use all the information that's available to them to make good choices.” – Annie Sarnblad   Connect with Annie Sarnblad: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annie-sarnblad/   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mailto:mark@impactpricing.com

• What you don't say is also important. When you speak, remember to include pauses in the right places to convey confidence or emphasis. Give your listeners time to digest what you've said. • Use the Pareto principle, or the 80-20 rule, and try to make 80% of the conversation about the other person and 20% about yourself. Listen, ask questions, and pay attention rather than forcing a particular topic, being fake, trying to impress or interrupting. • Be aware of microexpressions (tiny, ultra-rapid facial expressions), especially those that don't seem to match what is being said. Microexpressions tell the “truth” about someone's feelings, so observing them can give you empathy and insight into how they really feel. • People feel like they “click” more often when responses are swift, so pay attention and keep things flowing and responsive. That said, it's better to end a flagging conversation than panic too much when it goes quiet. • If you find yourself inching towards conflict, pause and ask whether the other person is speaking from a position of cognitive dissonance and, if they are, back away and try to re-establish rapport, since pushing will only invite more resistance. And, of course, be on guard against the tendency to hold incompatible or irrational views yourself! Finally, we get right into the thick of it. How can we read and analyze people just through sight and observation? We cover two primary aspects: facial expressions and body language. It's important to note that though many aspects have been scientifically proven (with physiological origins), we can't say that simple observations are foolproof. It can never be definitive because there are too many external factors to take into account. But we can better understand what typical things to look for and what we can glean from them. We use two types of facial expressions: micro- and macroexpressions. Macroexpressions are larger, slower, and more obvious. They are also routinely faked and consciously created. Microexpressions are the opposite of all of those things: incredibly quick, almost unperceivable, and unconscious. Psychologist Paul Ekman identified a host of microexpressions for each of the six basic emotions and in particular has also identified microexpressions to indicate nervousness, lying, or deception. Would you watch the news online or via a mobile app if it were presented by something that looks human, but is in fact an artificially intelligent virtual human? Today's episode features Leon Hawthorne. Leon is a media executive, journalist and academic; a former CEO of two satellite TV channels, three cable stations, a TV production company and a dozen web channels. He created web TV channels for Boot's, Borders and Waterstones, and advised the CEOs of Hearst Magazines, the Independent and London Evening Standard on digital content strategies. In his journalistic career, he was a World News Anchor for both CNN International and CNBC Europe. For BBC News, he was a member of the parliamentary lobby, attending daily briefings at 10 Downing Street, reporting politics and producing current affairs documentaries for BBC One and BBC Radio 4. Leon is presently on an academic sabbatical, researching for a PhD at City, University of London, while lecturing in Media and Corporate Communication. In our conversation, we discussed his PhD Research:  ‘Talking Heads: The use of virtual human presenters in the delivery of personalised news content'. The experiment itself uses AI to detect how participants really feel about the images they see, instead of relying wholly on answers participants give on a questionnaire. After being granted permission, the cloud-based software accesses the participant's webcam to analyse their microexpressions, as they watch the videos. Microexpressions are small, rapid movements of the facial muscles that psychologists believe betray subconscious emotional reactions. The technology for the experiment was developed by Affectiva Inc., the pioneer of Emotion AI.  The research is interested particularly in seeing how opinions vary, depending on the age and sex of participants, and also on how much they use smartphones and other new technologies. Anyone aged over 18, who has access to a computer with a webcam, can take part in the 10-minute online experiment.Links of interest:AITalkingHeads.com - http://www.aitalkingheads.comLeonHawthorne.com Affectiva Emotion AIFull link to participate in online experiment - https://cityunilondon.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_a3glSZjvos49rw2

I thought I would share a bit about the evolution of my interest in emotion and microexpression in this episode and how I translated it from the forensic world into a psychotherapy setting. The majority of communication has NOTHING to do with the words you say. It boils down to tone of voice, posture, facial expressions... all the nonverbals. This week on the podcast, we're diving into exactly how to make the best use of those non-verbals by first understanding what they mean, and then how to leverage them to create a sense of safety for your negotiation counterpart. And, since micro-expressions last for less than one second and they occur before the brain has the chance to stop the emotion from being displayed, being able to read micro-expressions is like being able to read someone's mind.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 111, October 2012. We have all had the experience of being taken advantage of at some point in our life. Con artists are often very friendly and charming. Jason Hartman is joined by author, Chris Hadnagy to discuss social engineering and framing, and how it relates to personal, business and national security issues. The discussion centers on Chris' book, Social Engineering:  The Art of Human Hacking. Chris defines social engineering as “any act that influences a person to take an action that may or may not be in their best interest.” He talks about the most important aspects of human hacking, such as influence – establishing rapport and asking for someone's help. Other aspects include reciprocity, concessions and social proof. Chris also explains the process of framing.  Our framing is our foundation, our beliefs and morals, and social engineers work to understand a person's framing, looking for common ground. Chris Hadnagy, aka loganWHD, has been involved with computers and technology for over 14 years. Presently his focus is on the "human" aspect of technology such as social engineering and physical security. Chris has spent time in providing training in many topics around the globe and also has had many articles published in local, national and international magazines and journals Chris is a student of Paul Ekman's training classes on Microexpressions and has spent time learning and educating others on the values of nonverbal communications.  He has combined what he learned with years of experience in a new research he has called nonverbal human hacking used to influence other people's emotions. He is also the lead developer of Social-Engineer.Org, as well as the author of the best-selling book, Social Engineering: The Art of Human Hacking. He has launched a line of professional social engineering training and penetration testing services at www.Social-Engineer.com. His goal is to help companies remain secure by educating them on the methods the "bad guys" use. Analyzing, studying, dissecting, then performing the very same attacks used by malicious hackers on some of the most recent attacks (i.e. Sony, HB Gary, LockHeed Martin, etc), Chris is able to help companies stay educated and secure. Chris runs one of the web's very popular security podcasts, the Social-Engineer.Org Podcast, which spends time each month analyzing someone who has to use influence and persuasion in their daily lives. By dissecting what they do, we can learn how we can enhance our abilities.  That same analysis runs over to the equally popular SEORG Newsletter.  After two years, both of these have become a staple in most serious security practices and are used by Fortune 500 companies around the world to educate their staff.  Chris can be found online at www.social-engineer.org, www.social-engineer.com and Twitter as @humanhacker.

Here are the show notes for this episode: Mike has arrived from Bob Lake, because he cares about you! Hypnothoughts Live is nearly here! It’s the best hypnosis conference on Earth. Mike wants to talk about …but Chris interjects that his attention span is next to zero. (No kidding! He didn’t let Mike finish what he was saying!) Television used to be black and white with slow scenes and character development. It’s all about focus, folks! Does acetaminophen really reduce empathy? Apparently, if you take it, you just don’t care! Mike keeps trying, but somehow, just can’t seem to care! Microexpressions are not being judged accurately and we are saying goodbye to the power of mirror neurons. If we stop caring about each other…what kind of therapists will we be? Chris used to read 1,000 word articles, but something’s gone horribly wrong. Even Mike’s not immune (gasp!) It takes a couple of days for Mike’s brain to slow down. Switching on and off like a crazy monkey! It’s like a drug, and Chris is onto something… Mike studied neuroscience and gives the example of coffee and the brain beginning to expect it. It’s the same with stimulation from images. Chris talks about mental fasting, which is really clever. Beware of word whiskers! English is extremely precise. Use it like a tool…you know? The filler phrase attack! Nice one Chris!!! Mike coughs like a lunatic from the tickle created by laughing. Like? The one that drives Mike insane, although “I mean…” is even worse. So anyway…   Anyway has a legitimate purpose as a recentering phrase. Please don’t say “Yada Yada Yada” or yeah…no…yeah…now… You know what? We have to stop talking about this. Let’s put an end to word whiskers! Awareness is the first step! It’s okay to pause! Chris’ Dad is doing a horrible throat sound whisker. Mike brilliantly invokes Gus Grissom. He goes on to explain the elderly woman’s horrible musical sound whisper: “Uh…hmm…mmm…” Mike is actually beginning to annoy himself! Hypnosis is an enhancing of focus. What a great definition! Focus created a throbbing thumb… The Reticular Activating System again! You can tune it. Mike used the RAS to find The Peterkin Papers again… The Engineer speaks! The brain is tuned by wanting the book and presenting it to conscious awareness. Mike and Chris are NLP people. The Magic Number 7  +/-  2 By putting stuff in your environment to remind you of your focus, it helps bring it into being. LTP is long-term potentiation…leading to permanency through Hebb’s Law. Mike bought a camera and camera advertisements appeared everywhere… MTV in the 1980s with Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles led to lack of attention! Lack of growth in a cancer is good! Mike talks about being at effect rather than being at cause. The 4 Love Languages Reprise… We all need things in the foreground to habituate connexions… You can use focus to help relationships too! “Uh…hmm…mmm” Mike admits to a rare relational error and actually apologized. When we ask you an empowering question it enables you to step outside the situation with a new focus… When things go wrong, someone’s lost track of the target state! Refocus, people! What would you like to have happen? (Thanks David Grove) Mike’s Word of the Year is back to Alacrity! Flow did not work for Mike. It made him way too laid back. Mike hits Chris in the solar plexus, purely for his own amusement. Mike says that Chris’ word Strength “will kick in at some point”, which is hilarious! Empowering Question: In what area of your life is focus lacking, and what will happen when you re-engage it today? Empowering Metaphor: The missing memories… Mike’s Introduction to Ericksonian Hypnosis 2 day class at Hypnothoughts Live is SOLD OUT!!! Time to crack out the torture devices! Well, actually Law 33 turns out to be much less about tightening those thumbscrews than releasing the pressure of them, making it a rather neat counterpart to Law 32's invocation to Play To People's Fantasies. Discovering someone's soft-spot may be the way to their hearts, but that doesn't mean you have to stab them in it. In fact, this Law proves to be a particularly acute lesson in the need to choose the right Law for the right situation and, beyond that, understand the specific way to apply it. When you begin to understand what makes other people tick – and how it betrays itself in everyday interactions – it can feel like information overload... even like seeing the Matrix. So don't think this sort of thing comes easy or is going to feel enjoyable. This week we share stories of Robert Greene's own use of seduction techniques and thumbscrews; take a deep-dive into the mentality of homophobes and other people who're secretly hiding from their own desires; and reveal why Dre's telepathic mother could well be your guru. We also reflect on how addicts see the world; why sometimes you can end up having to 'translate' between friends who fail to understand each other; and (quelle surprise) consider what this Law plays into relationships and pick-up artistry. Dre reveals what he sees in the Ugliness Mirror; how to terminate conversations when you damn well please; and contemplates whether he'll finally manage to master 4-D chess. Jon, meanwhile, warns you that making him feel obligated is a terrible idea for everyone involved, and wonders whether he's super-manipulatable, given how much he wears his heart (i.e. insecurities) on his sleeve. In the end, we conclude that it's probably only being utterly contrary that's going to save us. This episode includes: What does it mean to be a man today? Reading unconscious body language Why some people are so draining to spend time with Tipping waiters and what it says about you In conflicts and dramas, it's not about what happened, it's about how you made someone else feel How addicts see the world... and you The power of social proof – even just a little bit of it The way tactics only become offensive when we feel insecure in ourselves The serious dangers of letting people's fears spiral out of control ...But the serious positives of pitching in the nude Look out for the small stuff that really tells you who a person is The difference between power and just the thrill of control Mentioned in the episode: Our super-fancy feature interview with Jamie Alderton Dre's favourite: RuPaul's Drag Race Our brand new Meathead-Philosophy Shirts! Microexpressions and how to read them The Tony Robbins documentary on Netflix: I Am Not Your Guru Jon's time in a Buddhist monastery for a month – Before & After Neil Strauss's classic, The Game Daniel Priestley's book, Key Person of Influence Challenge: Try to identify your own thumbscrews. What triggers or sweetens you? And reflect on someone else in your life in the same way... give it a little test and see what happens! Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. Join us as we continue our 48 Laws of Power review, exploring Robert Greene’s provocative and compelling book, in which he lays bare the history, practice, psychology, and philosophies of power that ultimately shape all human relations. Often seen as a handbook for the ‘modern Machiavelli’, we take a closer look, beyond the hyperbole, and discuss how understanding and implementing these Laws can actually enrich your life personally, professionally and spiritually. Jon and Dre aim to get to the heart of each of the Laws, grapple with their sometimes disturbingly amoral nature, and discuss what the Laws mean in everyday life (often revealing their own experiences – good and bad – when they’ve either observed or transgressed them).

Dr. Spencer Reid takes a nap, but not really. However, he assures us that it would be perfectly normal if he did. References to biphasic of polyphasic sleep go back as far as 70BC. In fact, we only started sleeping eight hours a night straight through in the early 1920’s. Why would it change and is there any benefit to going back to that pattern of sleep? The Monkey finds out. Also, Criminal Minds follows the exploits of a wacky group of behavioral analysts. Kind of – it’s a procedural that explores how the FBI’s real Behavioral Analysis Unit works. The Monkey finds out if learning to read microexpressions is difficult and what it takes to become a real body language expert.

If you think reading people is not a science, think again. Understanding expressions that only appear on someone’s face for tenths of a second can mean a lot to those who know what to look for. In this episode, psychologist and nonverbal communication expert David Matsumoto, PhD, talks about why nonverbal communication is so important in everything from police investigations to intercultural exchanges. To learn more about these types of social engineering, the positive and negative sides of them, visit www.HolisticSurvival.com.Chris Hadnagy, aka loganWHD, has been involved with computers and technology for over 14 years. Presently his focus is on the "human" aspect of technology such as social engineering and physical security. Chris has spent time in providing training in many topics around the globe and also has had many articles published in local, national and international magazines and journals.Chris is a student of Paul Ekman's training classes on Microexpressions and has spent time learning and educating others on the values of nonverbal communications. Sony, HB Gary, LockHeed Martin, etc), Chris is able to help companies stay educated and secure.Chris runs one of the web's very popular security podcasts, the Social-Engineer.Org Podcast, which spends time each month analyzing someone who has to use influence and persuasion in their daily lives.
