Who will the future ministry leaders in the Church be? There are more protestant pastors over the age of 65 than there are under the age of 40. There is a leadership vacuum in the local church. Where are all of the young leaders in the local church? Is the next generation being challenged to consider if God is calling them to serve in the local church context? In this podcast, Jonathan interviews Shane Pruitt and Scott Pace on Calling Out the Called .Ministry leaders are called to teach, serve, and lead. But in leading those under their care, there comes a moment when they recognize the future leaders under their leadership. With this recognition comes an all too familiar question: What comes next?In Calling Out the Called, Scott Pace and Shane Pruitt answer this question by giving direction, encouragement, and a charge for ministry leaders to recognize the future leaders in their midst and do what needs to be done for the future of ministry: the calling out of the called.Shane Pruitt serves as the National Next Gen Director for the North American Mission Board (NAMB). He and his wife, Kasi, reside in Rockwall, TX with their six children – Raygen, Harper, Titus, Morris, Elliot, & Glory. He has been in ministry for over 20 years as a church planter, lead pastor, and student pastor. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biblical Studies, and a Master's Degree in History.Scott Pace currently serves as the Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC where he also teaches as Associate Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Ministry. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from North Carolina State University, a M.Div. and Ph.D. in Applied Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. His ministry as a pastor has extended over 20 years in a variety of full-time and interim capacities through three states. He has been married to his wife, Dana, since 1999. They have four children, Gracelyn, Tyler, and Tessa, and Cassie.

My special guest for this episode is my daughter Grace! We had a lot of fun preparing to do this episode. I'm trying to convince her to do more. (We talked about doing a separate podcast about learning psychology and ministry. ) Grace grew up in Portland. She is getting ready to go to college in Seattle in two weeks so it is really meaningful to spend time with her. Of course, I think she is amazing and I am proud of her. I love how kind she is, she's a loyal friend. Of my kids she probably most shares my sense of humor, and interest in Marvel movies and is the most verbal processor. She likes to play the violin, read, K-POP music, and sing in church. We've spent a lot of time at the library, movies, and coffee shops together when she was growing up. Nonprofit work aside, Melody and Gracelyn discuss their grief experiences, resulting in the women joining forces to offer grief and cancer support. At age six, Melody was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and was given a 50% chance of surviving beyond one year; she underwent treatment for the next three years. She's been a cancer warrior ever since. Gracelyn was inspired to support others after the unexpected loss of her father when she was twenty-six.Throughout their adversity, Melody and Gracelyn wish people knew they are not alone and that cancer and grief support exists. Many of us end up working in the grief world because of our personal experiences. We want to give others what we most needed. This is especially true for Melody Lomboy-Lowe and her niece Gracelyn Bateman, who co-founded Luna Peak Foundation in the hopes of supporting both those affected by cancer and those grieving a death. Melody was diagnosed with cancer when she was 6 and went through intensive treatment until she was 9. Gracelyn's dad, and Melody's brother-in-law, died of a cardiac event while running in 2016. Through their books and social media channels, Luna Peak provides multicultural stories of survivorship and hope. Places we go in this episode: Grieving during the holidays. What Melody needed from adults while she was going through treatment. How interviewing those affected by cancer and those grieving a death has impacted them. Their hopes for Luna Peak Foundation going forward. Books mentioned: Beyond Remission Beyond Grief Holiday Griefings

This is actually one of the first podcasts that we taped over 1 year ago. Gracelyn and Rob decided to delve into what makes the Renaissance tick in terms of how well educated were people. The Renaissance is not only a movement of art but also philosophy. They ask the question about the aristocracy and the elite of the church and also of the artists and how well these people were educated? How were the the themes of the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms created? Were they just created by the artists alone or was there a whole process and group of people working together in the creation of such wonderfully complex imagery and beauty.

In this episode, I spoke with Gracelyn Bateman, one half of Luna Peak, a foundation focused on creating books and products that elevate the stories of survivors in the grief and cancer communities, celebrate life, and give back. Gracelyn can also be seen on the foundation’s Instagram account, Snapshots of Life After Loss, which showcases authentic and often humorous grief perspectives. We chatted about the 5 year anniversary of when Gracelyn suddenly lost her dad, how she’s using her masters degree in sociology from Columbia to study the grief process, her professional opinion on using dark humor to cope, Luna Peak’s “The Grief Workbook” (a silly way to unpack your grief, reflective prompts funeral week bingo, loss word puzzle, and word search for condolences), how nerve wracking it was to step into the grief space, what it was like posting funny memes about grief on Instagram, the importance of representation and multiculturalism in grieving spaces, why we need to share our grief to open the door to broader conversations about coping mechanisms, how often grievers are silenced for laughing, surrounding yourself with people who understand, and the awkwardness of telling the cashier at REI your dad is dead. For more information about Death Is Hilarious, visit deathishilarious.com To get in touch, email deathishilarious@gmail.com. It all started in the beginning, when they were babies. Well, the dragons weren't babies, they were eggs. And the fairies weren't babies either, fairies are never babies. But the rest of them were, the knights and the ponies. And at the beginning, when everyone was an egg, or a non-baby, or a baby, everyone was nice. But over time, liiiiiiiiitle by liiiiiitle, so slowly that no one could say when or how or why it started, the fairies and the ponies got mean. Beatrice knows this, better than anyone, because, although she can't prove it yet, she knows that the fairies and ponies have stolen her egg. Her dragon egg.
