After weeks of chaos and dysfunction, the Republicans in the House have finally settled on a new Speaker after turfing out Trump stooge Kevin McCarthy. The new guy is a little-known relative newcomer to Congress, but it turns out he is basically Gym Jordan with an inside voice. I explore how we got here and the implications. Views my own.

Well, we made it though my first week on the air from Arizona, but Gym Jordan didn't! He's toast. And with no Speaker (and no nominee either), the Republicans did what they do so well... adjourned, and left for the weekend. Seriously. They'll allegedly regroup on Monday with a new set of Speaker wannabees... It's not like there are any pressing issues here and around the globe that need immediate action or anything. JFC. It was a busy week, and I'm thrilled to welcome Marcy Wheeler back to the show. Since Marcy is in Ireland and I'm here in AZ, we recorded today's conversation at 9am AZ time. Given how quickly the news changes, it's no surprise that there was some breaking news between when we recorded and when it airs at 2pm AZ time, but most of it remains quite timely and important. What changed? Gym Jordan was told, unequivocally, by his caucus that it was time to abandon his quest for the Speakership. And Hamas released two American hostages they were holding in Gaza- a mother and daughter. Now settle in, as Marcy has the mic for the hour....

The order of the day, though, was for them to decide along what path they would f@#k things up next. Gym Jordan won't share “whistleblower” testimony with Democrats, because if he did Dems would just make fun of him some more. Russia doesn't need Trump when they have Boeing and Airbus. Senator Dianne Feinstein has shingles, encephalitis, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, and probably a lot more. But she's apparently here, ostensibly voting, and work is getting done, let's not wear her out with a lot of stress.

Omicron sweeps across the nation, although whether it is sweeping Delta out is up for contention. President Joe Biden swerved between empathy, uplift and frustration during his speech on Omicron. What more would you want from the guy, other than a complete, instant solution, which is of course what voters want. So far, Joe has been up to the task, with the help of Nancy Pelosi. The Supreme Court has a raft of cases upcoming by which they could stop that progress, although New York and California show paths toward solutions. Omicron is what Michael Flynn and his white-power QAnon buds like to call “Anthrax”, because how hip would it be to catch that? Unfortunately, Michael Flynn and his white-power QAnon buds are probably our bigger threat. The January 6 committee has plenty of evidence of militia connections to those at the top and is accruing more each day. Gym Jordan in the barrel and on the stand is always a pleasure, and good for ratings. All the better to trace the leadup to that day and the danger it presents to our future.

Meanwhile, mask mandates might need to happen again, even outside. Speaking of deadly lies, Kevin McCarthy picked his star player, Gym Jordan, to foul the way for the Republicans on the January 6 commission.  Good news, there is at least one Republican who called the riot criminal. On the other hand, there are 3 who pretended that the election was the crime. For those keeping track, the Trump campaign has admitted a lie. Can we now just move on? The DOJ is moving on from Wilbur Ross' lies to Congress on behalf of Trump. Actually, it was Bill Barr who moved on, before Merrick Garland even moved in. Joan McCarter reports that Republicans want to defund the police, in this particular case, the Internal Revenue Service, potentially delaying the vote on whether or not they're ready to have a bill on which they hope to vote on eventually. Instead, Chuck Schumer will proceed today with the procedural vote to proceed on the proceedings.
