In this episode 262, we visit with Terry Roberts, author of “My Mistress Eyes are Raven Black,” a literary mystery that explores the disturbing lengths some people will go to protect racial purity and condemn those that are different, the ones they fear. The book is set on Ellis Island. The year is 1920. New York Harbor's immigration and public health authorities are slowly recovering from the war years when a young, pregnant Irish woman disappears from the Isolation Hospital on Ellis Island. Stephen Robbins, a specialist in finding missing persons, is assigned the case. Yet when he arrives at the isolation hospital, he discovers an inexplicable string of deaths and disappearances among immigrant patients...and a staff that seems to be hiding a chilling secret. Silas House, author of “Southernmost,” has this to say about the book: "Terry Roberts' new novel is a literary thriller of the highest order: lyrical and suspenseful, with characters you will long remember. This is a heart-pounding, timely, and completely immersive read. It's also Roberts' finest hour." I love interviewing artists and having conversations about the arts not just because I love the arts but know, despite opinions by some to the contrary, that the arts are vehicles of truth and provide the means of insights and understanding about reality, ethics, faith, worldview, beauty, the quest for meaning, and all manner of other important issues and questions. The arts have been and are an integral part of every people group and civilization I know. Of course, as a Christian, I am especially interested in the way the Christian faith and the arts interweave. To approach a conversation about all of these kinds of questions about and interests in the arts, I could think of no one better to interview than Terry Roberts! Terry is many things, but there are three dimensions of Terry's life that apply to this interview. First, Terry is an educator. Specifically, Terry is the Director of The National Paideia Center--an organization whose purpose is to promote critical and creative thinking. Second, Terry is a novelist. Having a Ph.D. in American Literature, Terry not only has studied writing and literature deeply, but is a practitioner of the art. Third, Terry is a Christian. So, questions of the relationship between faith, art, and larger ideas that matter intermingle for Terry, in his life, thinking, and his craftsmanship as an artist. Terry is the author of four novels. He has just released the fourth novel, My Mistress' Eyes are Raven Black. You can learn more about Terry and his novels for his website, terryrobertsauthor.com. The music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project. From Raven Blacks Website-Meet Raven Black. A Voodoo Doctor "The Doctor" came across a girl who looked lost and scared. He used his magic to turn her into a doll, but his spell was disrupted from her terrifying and taunting screams, she remained half human, half doll. As Raven lived in the dark world of the Doctor, she secretly learned his magic and conjured up a demon, Muppet, who she made her eternal protector and trapped him inside her heart. The Doctor and Muppet created Stitches to search for those who are looking to join our dark metal carnival world in the 13th hour. Raven Black released their first Single, "Died Inside" on September 7, 2013 at the Roxy, selling out the venue that night. They continued to work in the studio and released their first EP, "Midnight Dreary" in June 2014, successfully packed the house at the famous Viper Room. The band was previously managed by Aaron Rossi (Grammy Nominated Drummer of Ministry/Prong), AJR Enterprises and worked with Grammy-Winning Producer Logan Mader (SoulFly/Machinehead/Five Finger Death Punch). In October 2014, they revamped their line up and began working with Grammy Nominated Producer Ulrich Wild (Rob Zombie, White Zombie, Alice In Chains, Breaking Benjamin, Pantera, Seether,Dethklok, Otep, and more) on their new album. They then spent the next two years writing and then released their single "Seven Sins" in April 2016 and their EP "Seven Sins" in September 2016. Raven Black played the Corona Hell and Heaven Festival July 2016 in Mexico City, Mexico with headliners like Rammstein, Twisted Sister, Ghost, Five Finger Death Punch, Mushroomhead, Selpultura, Alien Ant Farm and many others. To end their summer, they played the 2016 DirtFest Festival in Michigan with headliners, Killswitch Engage, Asking Alexandria, Hatebreed, Attila, Born of Osiris and many others.Releasing their first Official EP with the new line up, Seven Sins EP dropped September 29, 2016 on the way out to tour with Mushroomhead, Sunflower Dead, Unsaid Fate and Death Division for Mushroomhead's Annual Halloween Tour. The 2017 year started very busy for Raven Black as they headed to Cleveland, OH to film their new music video with MonoBloc's Josh Apple and Andrew Sparks, for "Twinkle Twinkle Little Scars", Premiered by Revolver Magazine on April 13, 2017. A little horror version of their already theatrical presence in the metal community. "We wanted to have some blood in this one," says Raven. After a quick rest, Raven Black toured through the Southern parts of the U.S. on their way to SXSW . They played the Heart of Texas Rock Festival in March 2017. Winning fans from across mutiple genres at SXSW. Raven says, "I am so proud of being able to share our METAL music with other fans of country, hip hop and pop genres. I was so surprised and happy to see them buying our music. It was fun and the only thing missing was the big mosh pit, LOL, although there was a small handful of metalheads respresented this year at SXSW. "After returning back home to Los Angeles, the band quickly prepared for their first Headliner Tour, The Hex O'Clock Tour, which kicked off in Guadalajara, Mexico at the Roadhouse Voodoo Bar, July 7, 2017 and returned to the U.S. to begin their onth long tour throughout the U.S. from coast to coast. The Hex O'Clock Tour was a complete success and the band was able to visit so many new cities throughout the country, see their fans and play so many new venues. Sharing with their fans, new stage props, a few new songs and announcing their new album "13" in early Spring 2018. Raven Black just finished their 6-week across the U.S. tour supporting Psychostick, Arsonists Get All the Girls and Kissing Candice. Danniel Odell was born in Medellín, Colombia, with a unique curiosity about music, as a child, his family showed him many Latin rhythms, since then he decided to make music part of his life. He had never seen a DJ in his life before, but he started listening to techno on the radio, remember that he used to listen to Mauro Picotto, Danilo Vigorito, Joy Kitikonti ... among others. From that moment he fell in love with music, began to investigate, where it came from, who produces this type of music and at that moment he knew what a DJ can do, and that was it, he realized that he wanted to be a DJ for the rest of his life He used to play music for his family, put on headphones and started playing for his family, he only laughed when he remembered those days. He officially begins his career in 2005 when he starts playing in small clubs and in some friends bars, private parties ... In 2006 he met one of his best friends and colleague TacoMan, he was one of his motivators to continue pursuing his dream. They start playing in big local clubs like La Kasa, Carnival, Elektra, Oceania, among others. After that, he began to meet new DJS and artists of the scene like John Aquaviva, in mid-2010 he released his record label called STEAM CIRCUIT, 2012 he got his first concert outside of Colombia, landed in Chile. His tour of Chile was with his friend Deraout, they played in cities like Antofagasta, then in some clubs in Santiago and in one of the best radios in Cigarra.FM. He has shared a stand with SuperFlu, Aldo Foshino, Rodrigo Valvidia, Rodriguez JR, Perc, Ansome, Tripeo, ... and many more. His most recent project is a sample of his record label "Raven Black" in some clubs in the city. Meredith and Kaytee are giddying up with a new episode of spicy opinions. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a new, most favorite ever, local bookshop win, and a triumphant return to the library. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. There’s a whole slew of goodness in here, as well as a plea for a certain title from a certain author, and reflections on re-reading a decades-old favorite. We’ve got a brief Slow But Steady update to share with you and then it’s onward to our deep dive. For our deep dive this week, we are chatting about cozy mysteries. Why read them? What makes a mystery cozy? What are Meredith’s favorite titles in the canon? Do they require baking and puns? Inquiring minds need to know. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’ve got a tale reminiscent of the old west and a fun bookish fictional title that we both adore. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. British writer Ann Cleeves discusses Raven Black, the haunting first novel in her award-winning Shetland crime series, with presenter Harriett Gilbert, a studio audience and readers around the world. On a remote Scottish island in the Shetland Isles, a teenage girl is found dead in a snow-covered field. Some years ago, another young girl disappeared in mysterious circumstances near to his house, but the body was never found. As Inspector Perez and local police pursue their investigation a veil of suspicion is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years neighbours nervously lock their doors, whilst a killer lives on in their midst.

Ann Cleeves is a crime writer best known for two series of novels, both of which have been adapted for television. Vera, for ITV, features her detective Vera Stanhope, and Shetland, for the BBC, focuses on DI Jimmy Perez, who works for the Shetland police. Born in 1954, Ann grew up in Herefordshire and Devon. After secondary school she spent a year providing childcare for a family in London before reading English at the University of Sussex. She dropped out of her degree course, and by chance, was offered a job as assistant cook at the bird observatory in Fair Isle, despite not knowing how to cook, nor anything about birds. She met her husband Tim there, who came as a visiting bird watcher. They spent four years on the tiny tidal island of Hilbre off the Wirral peninsula, where Ann started to write. Her debut novel was published in 1986 and she has published a book a year since then. Her first Shetland novel, Raven Black, appeared in 2006 and won the Duncan Lawrie Dagger, at the time the richest crime-writing prize in the world. Her second breakthrough came when a TV producer picked up a second-hand copy of one her novels featuring her dishevelled detective Vera Stanhope and decided it would make perfect prime-time viewing. In October 2017, Ann received the Diamond Dagger from the Crime Writers’ Association, the highest honour in British crime writing, awarded by fellow crime authors. In 2018, she published the final of eight Shetland novels, and this autumn will see the publication of the first of a new Vera series set in Devon. Her husband Tim died in December 2017. Ann lives in Whitley Bay, with her two daughters and six grandchildren nearby.
