In the ever-evolving world of beer, maintaining a competitive edge can feel like navigating a stormy sea. Dan Kopman, former CEO of Heavy Seas and co-founder of Schlafly Beer, provides a seasoned perspective on the complexities and potential of the brewing industry."Early mover advantage is a double-edged sword," Kopman observes, a note of caution in his voice. "It's easy to gain but terribly difficult to maintain." This concept, familiar across various industries, holds particular resonance in the dynamic sphere of craft beer. Companies like Schlafly and Heavy Seas have ridden the initial waves of advantage, setting precedents in the market long before competitors caught wind. However, the real battle lies in sustaining that lead amid a burgeoning crowd of innovative brewers.Kopman's journey is marked by his significant roles in shaping the beer industry. Notably, he was instrumental in offering acclaimed beers like Young's Pubs' unique brews in London and Schlafly Beer in St. Louis. His broad experience fuels his understanding of the intricate dance between early adoption and lasting impact.Interestingly, the conversation isn't confined to traditional beer alone. Kopman acknowledges the rising influence of non-alcoholic (NA) beer, a niche that's garnering substantial attention. "Non-alcoholic beer has low penetration in the US compared to other regions," he notes. "But the global growth rate is in the high single digits." This trend suggests an emerging market ripe with possibilities for brewers willing to innovate and cater to changing consumer preferences.Kopman's insights also extend to broader demographic shifts and their impact on beer consumption. The interplay between immigration patterns and beer sales, for example, underscores the importance of understanding and addressing diverse consumer bases. "Brewers need to broaden their appeal," he advises, highlighting the necessity for cultural inclusivity in marketing strategies. Moreover, Kopman emphasizes the significance of strategic collaborations and experiential learning. At American University's Kogod School of Business, students engage in capstone projects that transition them into budding consultants. A notable collaboration with Right Proper Brewing Company in DC exemplifies how such partnerships can foster growth and innovation within the industry.Reflecting on market disruptions, Kopman draws a parallel between the beer industry and the tech world. "Consider the iPhone," he says. "It wasn't the first smartphone, but it achieved significant volume." Similarly, the NA beer market, while not new, holds potential for substantial growth and mainstream acceptance. In a rapidly changing market, staying ahead requires a blend of innovation, adaptability, and deep consumer understanding. For Dan Kopman, the journey through the beer landscape is as much about respecting tradition as it is about embracing the new waves of change. His experiences and insights offer valuable lessons for brewers and beer enthusiasts alike, navigating the ever-exciting and often tempestuous waters of the craft beer industry. Dan Kopman knows a thing or two about beer. Some of you may recognize the name Daniel Kopman. If you don't know his name, you undoubtedly know some of his work. Currently, Kopman is a Professor and Lecturer at American University's Kogod School of Business and, likely more notable to us beer nerds, a Senior Policy Advisor for the World Brewing Alliance. Previously he was the co-founder and CEO of Schlafly Beer in St. Louis, CEO of Heavy Seas, voting member of the Beer Institute, and board member of the Brewers Association. What is the World Brewing Alliance? In short, they're the trade association for trade associations. Over 70% of the world's beer production is represented by the WBA from small brewers to multinational conglomerates. Their mission is to corporate social responsibility, sustainability, responsible marketing practices, and invocation in the brewing sector. On the other side of things, they represent brewers to organizations like the UN and the World Health Organization. Bringing the two together their goal is for brewers to be responsible with their brewing and for health organizations to realize and support the cultural and economic benefits that brewers bring.Low alcohol, no alcohol, and changing trends in drinkingWe've talked about NA beer a good bit on the show and I think most of us know that lower alcohol beers are gaining popularity. Studies show younger generations are being more responsible in their consumption and aren't looking for a 15% stout. As the NA sector continues to grow, there are still plenty of people that will still want to grab a beer with some booze in it. Despite the growth we've seen in NA beer in America, our market is still way behind many other countries. Through technological and scientific advances more brewers are now offering high quality low and no alcohol beer. We've still got plenty of room to grow in this sector. Brewing around the worldCraft beer is booming in many places you may not think of. There's a growing scene in South Africa and you've probably enjoyed some South African hops in your hazy IPA. The scene in India is up and coming as well. Much like out locally sourced grains, hops, and fruits there's plenty of unique ingredients in these countries. Expanding the offerings of grains, hops, and other ingredients in local markets around the world is a boost for the environment as well as local economies. We got deep into some amazing topics this week. January 20th was the official halfway mark of the Biden Administration's first term. That might seem like a an odd time to discuss Presidential transitions, but with the justice department still prosecuting participants in the January 6th insurrection it's never too soon to ask ourselves what lay ahead for 2024. Our guest in this episode, David Marchick is Dean of the Kogod School of Business at American University, but until recently he was director of the Partnership for Public Service's Center for Presidential Transition and the host of its Transition Lab podcast. He is also the co-author of a fascinating new book The Peaceful Transfer of Power: An Oral History of America's Presidential Transitions (UVA Press, 2022). Whether it was the worst transition in our nation's history—Buchanan to Abraham Lincoln or arguably the smoothest—The Bush 43 to Obama administrations—Marchick breaks down the good, the bad, and the ugly of Presidential transitions. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.
Angela Petras, Assistant Dean of Experiential Learning at the Kogod School of Business, describes the pro-bono consulting program which provides hands-on consulting experiences for students. His most recent book is: The Peaceful Transfer of Power: An Oral History of America's Presidential Transitions The acceptance of the results of a fair, free and democratic election, plus a seamless transition from one administration to the next, is crucial to a functioning and viable democracy. Attacks on democracy have become more prevalent, e.g., Orban in Hungary, Duterte in the Philippines, Erdogan in Turkey, Trump in the US. and Bolsonaro in Brazil, Ken Burns, the famous documentarian, suggested that it has been a miracle for the past 246 years that wthere were peaceful transitions, until the January 6, 2021 insurgency which was invited and incited by Donald Trump. The Presidential Transition Act requires outgoing administrations to pursue a professional transition.
As the Jan. 6 Committee make criminal referrals against Donald Trump, David Marchick, author of the book The Peaceful Transfer of Power: An Oral History of America's Presidential Transitions, joins. Like most of the public, federal employees stand by and watch as presidential administrations come and go. Every president is flawed, but they have varying degrees of success in office. Success is highly influenced by how carefully presidents prepare for their transitions to office. This interview by Federal Drive host Tom Temin is with the co-author of what might be the first definitive study of modern transitions, which includes interviews with transition planners themselves. That co-author is David Marchick, currently the Dean of the Kogod School of Business at American University.
Presidential transitions are the most delicate and hazardous periods in the entire political cycle. Even at the best of times, incoming administrations face a huge task. Each new president must make more than 4,000 political appointments in a short period of time, as well as get up to speed on ongoing policy issues. To discuss the history and the current framework of presidential transitions, Lawfare publisher David Priess sat down with David Marchick, the dean of American University's Kogod School of Business and previously served as the director of the Center for Presidential Transition at the Partnership for Public Service. He also is the author of, “The Peaceful Transfer of Power: An Oral History of America's Presidential Transitions,” and the host of the Transition Lab podcast. This is our second segment about what "Made in America" means when it comes to motor vehicle manufacturing. While the federal government mandated source labeling to be included on all passenger cars and light duty trucks sold in the United States starting with the 1994 model year, the federal requirements are problematic with respect to how and what information is aggregated. Enter American University's Kogod School of Business and their annual Made in America Auto Index. Championed by Frank Dubois, the Kogod Index attempts to resolve a number of the shortcomings in the federal data, while including several data points that make the Kogod Index more relevant to American motorists.

Frontline IB: Conversations With International Business Scholars
Dr. Jennifer Oetzel is a Professor in the Kogod School of Business at American University. She received her Ph.D. degree in Business Strategy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research and teaching broadly focuses on the competitive implications of social, economic, and environmental sustainability challenges. More specifically, she studies how multinational enterprises (MNEs) can reduce business risk at its source rather than trying to avoid or react to risks as they occur. By adopting strategies aimed at peacebuilding, managers may not only reduce investment risk but also contribute to stability and prosperity in the communities where they operate and gain a competitive advantage by doing so. Prof. Oetzel's research has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), the Journal of International Business Policy (JIBP), Strategic Management Journal (SMJ), Organization Science, among numerous other outlets. Prof. Oetzel has been a longtime member of AIB and has served in a variety of capacities over the years. Most recently, she was invited to serve on the Ethics Review Committee. She has also served as Co-Track Chair three times (for the 2009, 2018 and 2020 AIB meetings) and co-organized the 2016 Doctoral Consortium at the AIB Meeting in New Orleans. Prof. Oetzel was a member of the Alan M. Rugman Young Scholar Award Committee from 2014 – 2017. She chaired the committee in 2017. Currently, she serves as an Editorial Board Member for five journals including SMJ, JIBS, and JIBP and she was Associate Editor at Business & Society. She won Best Reviewer Awards from JIBS in 2018 and JIBP in 2020. Visit https://www.aib.world/frontline-ib/jennifer-oetzel/ for the original video interview.
In this episode, Kaitlyn Allen talks with Emmanuelle Palikuca, Senior Sustainability Advisor, Special Projects Team with ISS Corporate Solutions (ICS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). ICS provides industry standard solutions in corporate governance, executive compensation, and sustainability. Emmanuelle works with corporate issuers across industries to develop their ESG strategies and improve sustainability-related disclosures and programs. She provides insight and guidance on alignment with ESG ratings, global frameworks and standards and is the lead Materiality Assessments advisor on the ICS team. Emmanuelle holds an M.S. in Sustainability Management from American University's Kogod School of Business. Kaitlyn and Emmanuelle discuss the challenges that many companies face in determining which ratings and rankings best support their ESG goals, and matter to their investors. From a practical perspective, ratings for any industry should provide a consistent measure as to how a company is performing against certain standards. In the ESG space, this is not always that that clear cut. As such, there is a call for increasing transparency surrounding the various rating structures, with greater clarity on what they are designed to measure. This allows for companies to make more informed decisions around which constructs work best for them. Emmanuelle's expertise brings clarity to the utility of some of the different ratings related to sustainability performance, and we are reminded that ESG ratings serve as signals to investors…they are not the end all, be all for their decision making. Conversely, to a company, an ESG rating is not just a score, it should serve to guide implementation of solutions that support sustainability goals. We are approaching a year spent selling in pandemic conditions. The virus has taken much from us and forced us to change the ways in which we live and work. In the beginning we thought we could muddle through for a few weeks. Those weeks stretched to months and months. But our initial fears have given way to resilience. We’ve found we can continue operations and sell to customers using technology platforms. But at what cost? Are the benefits of technology robbing us of closer contact in our business relations? Could we do better in connecting with each other? ----more---- This Asher Sales Sense Podcast – “Connecting Personally Through Technology to Sell Authentically” - features host Kyla O’Connell with guest Frederique Irwin, Founder and CEO of HER CORNER Inc., a Washington DC-based company offering business peer groups for women business owners committed to business growth. When she’s not managing the business operations of Her Corner, you can find Fred either running accelerator programs or working one-on-one with women to help them scale their businesses. She is one of 500 high impact global entrepreneurs selected for the Edmund Hillary Fellowship program working globally to support others in business endeavors. Fred also has taught entrepreneurship, business management, and organizational behavior at the Kogod School of Business of American University. How has the global pandemic changed selling approaches, processes, places, and locations? What adjustments have been made? What are the benefits of greater reliance on technology in selling? How can we use technology to be more genuine and authentic? What will stay or go away after the pandemic? What will be hard to go back to? Listen in to hear the answers to these questions (and more) so you can be more authentic in your technology-enabled business transactions. Asher Sales Sense is hosted by John Asher and Kyla O’Connell of ASHER Strategies which is a program on the Funnel Radio Channel. ASHER Strategies is the sponsor of ASHER Sales Sense.

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Jasmine Stringer, a speaker, lifestyle expert, influencer and strategist. In today's conversation we have meaningful discussion with Jasmine about her background and how to become a person of action and of service. She talks about precious moments and her ability to help people live authentic, connected, and mindful lives. She tells us all about her new #sharethemicmn venture and her mission to seize the day. #SHARETHEMICMN's mission is to amplify the work, lives, and stories of dynamic Brown/Black women residing in Minnesota by expanding the reach of their voices. Through storytelling, exposure, and relationship development, the #SHARETHEMICMN campaign, founded by Jasmine strives to make Minnesota a more inclusive and equitable state. Jasmine believes the newly developed relationships will lead to new understanding and insights that will be impactful in tackling and overcoming unconscious biases, racial injustices and racial inequities. #SHARETHEMICN launched on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. Every Wednesday during the month of July we have paired Black/Brown women with allies (men and women) that have agreed to“share their mic,” (their Twitter or Instagram account) for the day. Starting in August, they will continue the “mic shares” bi-monthly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month through the end of the year. You will not want to miss this inspiring conversation! Jasmine is a keynote speaker, award-winning author of Seize Your Life: How to Carpe Diem Every Day, on-air TV personality and host of the podcast and lifestyle blog Carpe Diem with Jasmine. In the early 2000s, Jasmine was living her life like so many others — on autopilot, without vision or purpose — until she was given an unexpected gift. A lay off! As she said goodbye to her “corporate gig” she realized she hadn't been truly happy or fulfilled in years. So she made a choice not to stay miserable any longer and to do whatever it took to find happiness wherever she could. Jasmine leveraged a pivotal moment in her life to learn the true meaning of carpe diem. She found endless, little ways to connect with herself and others through “JAZZ'ed UP” DIY projects, style, entertaining and travel on a budget. Today, Jasmine is on a mission to help people live empowered and authentic lives. Through her Seize Your Life keynotes, workshops, and customized coaching sessions, Jasmine guides clients and audiences through a simple process to identify their goals and achieve their personal definition of success. Jasmine's common-sense approach to creating a life of one's own has inspired thousands of people across the world to carpe diem! Jasmine has shared her positive message to corporate and nonprofit organizations such as Land O' Lakes, Federal Reserve Bank, Airbnb, Cargill, Goodwill, Mondelēz International, Bayer and the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. Jasmine inspires revelation and change by leveraging her experiences working with some of the world's biggest brands including Kraft Foods, General Mills, Toyota, Box Tops for Education, Fox Searchlight, Publicis Groupe and the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN TV). Additionally, Jasmine speaks on how to effectively network and how to build synergy and develop interpersonal skills- core tools for living a vision-driven life. Jasmine is a graduate of American University's Kogod School of Business in Washington, D.C. She was named a Twin Cities Fearless Woman in 2017 and a Woman of Promise by the Girl Scouts in 2012. Last week 175,000 people from165 countries make their annual trip to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Over 4,500 global companies and tech startups showcased new and innovative tech. The media desperately searched for the best ideas hidden inside 2.9 million net square feet of exhibition space. After following the news online, I was a little disheartened around new tech that didn't seem to solve any real problems. Samsung's Ballie is a tennis ball-like robot that beeps and rolls around following its owner and captures special moments. But this seemed at odds with our new privacy-aware state, With the increasing awareness around climate change, I found myself wondering if Charmin's Bluetooth-controlled robot bear that brings its owner a spare toilet roll is the best use of our resources? But rather than turn into just another bitter tech columnist, I went in search of a more positive and optimistic view. Over at Finn Partners, they have a talented mix of researchers, strategists, designers, technologists, content specialists, and campaigners. With over 800 people across three continents, I knew they would have someone that attends CES every year that could talk about the trends they have seen over the years and what stood out at this year's event. Barry Reicherter is a senior partner at Finn Partners and has a passion for Digital Insights and Ideas. The Digital transformation and innovation leader joins me on Tech Talks Daily to discuss what he saw at CES. We also discuss the conversations he was monitoring online and those he heard on the show floor. With more than 20 years of experience in digital marketing, Barry leads Finn Partners' Insights team focusing on online and social media research, analytics, planning, and measurement for clients operating in consumer, healthcare, education, government, public affairs, travel, and technology sectors. Holding positions at AOL, Porter Novelli, Active.com, Sage Software, Widmeyer Communications and Finn Partners, Barry's body of work has been focused in the digital strategy and measurement for clients such as Hyundai, CapitalOne, American Express, Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, American Express, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Steelcase, Rosetta Stone, HP, Nestlé, Pfizer, Chase, Pearson, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, and Reed-Elsevier. Barry is also a frequent speaker-panelist at industry conferences. Recently Barry joined the faculty of the Kogod School of Business at American University as an adjunct professor of digital branding for the M.B.A. program.

I think it’s a wasted opportunity to only talk about Exodus every year, and our own story of liberation. Because if we’ve been lucky enough to get this free, we owe it to everyone else, we owe it to look back while we’re standing in the Red Sea and make sure everyone is behind us. — Becca AbuRakia-Einhorn This Passover, we talk with Becca and Waseem AbuRakia-Einhorn about their annual tradition: the Palestinian Freedom Seder. In this seder, everything from the Haggadah to the food is focused on celebrating Jewish and Palestinian culture, bringing attention to the oppression of the Palestinian people, and making connections between the Passover story of Jewish liberation and the Palestinian struggle for liberation today. This episode of Unsettled was produced by Max Freedman and Ilana Levinson and edited by Max Freedman. Music by Nat Rosenzweig. Almost a decade ago serendipity landed Becca AbuRakia-Einhorn in the Intensive Arabic Semester in Israel, instead of a regular Hebrew Ulpan, which ignited her passion in learning about Palestine and Israel. Becca grew up Jewish and was lucky enough to meet a wonderful Palestinian Muslim man at a barbecue in Israel (surprise: he later became her husband). After a year and a half in Israel, she and her husband moved to the United States and later had three weddings--a civil wedding, a Palestinian wedding in Israel, and a Jewish wedding in DC. She currently lives in Washington, DC and spends her spare time organizing with IfNotNow, a movement of Jewish Americans working to end American Jewish support for the Occupation of Palestine. This year, she and her husband will host their 7th annual AbuRakia-Einhorn Palestinian Freedom Seder. By day, she works as the Coordinator of Education Abroad at Gallaudet University, the world's first and only university designed to be barrier-free for the deaf and hard of hearing. She spends her days making education abroad opportunities more accessible. She speaks (with varying degrees of success and confidence) English, Spanish, Portuguese, American Sign Language, Palestinian Arabic, and Hebrew. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Media Studies from Pomona College. She went on to get an MA in International Affairs with a focus on Israel/Palestine from American University's School of International Service where she wrote her thesis on the Fight for Civil Rights for Palestinian Citizens of Israel. She is currently one month away from finishing her MPA from American University's School of Public Affairs. Waseem AbuRakia-Einhorn hails from the small Palestinian village of Meiser inside Israel. He currently works as the IT Services Manager at American University's School of Public Affairs. He has a BS in Business Administration from American University's Kogod School of Business and is working on finishing his MS in Business Analytics, also from American University's Kogod School of Business. For twenty-eight years he lived in Israel. Eight years ago he met his wife at a barbecue in Israel. Six years ago he moved to the United States and got married. Two years ago he became of citizen of the United States. He is a proud Palestinian Muslim and a fluent speaker of Arabic, Hebrew, and English. REFERENCES IfNotNow's "Dayenu!
