Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 30th of January 2025 Last week was pretty unremarkable as far as the Sun goes, but it looks like that is about to change. The seven days preceding Thursday the 30th were characterised by reasonably settled geomagnetic conditions, with a maximum Kp index of 3.67 and a solar flux index that fell from 205 on the 24th, to the 170s by the 30th. During this period there had been only four M-class solar flares and no X-class events. Over the next few days, things could change. Two large coronal holes near the Sun's equator threaten to upset the quiet conditions. As the solar material flows out it could cause the Kp index to rise, perhaps to 4, with reduced maximum usual frequencies and noisy conditions. But this will depend upon its associated Bz or interplanetary magnetic field. If it is south-pointing it will couple more easily with the Earth's magnetic field, allowing plasma to flow in, and the Kp index will rise. However, if it is north-pointing we may see very little effect at all. So, keep an eye on Solarham.com for real-time updates and look for increased solar wind speed as the main indicator of the approaching solar material. If the Bz does point south we may expect unsettled conditions and possible aurora today, the 2nd. Meanwhile, three sunspot groups are rotating into an Earth-facing position in the Northern Hemisphere on the Eastern side of the Sun. We have already seen an M-class flare from one of them. These could boost the solar flux index but could also be a source of solar flares and coronal mass ejections over the coming week. Strangely, NOAA does not seem to think they will, as its predicted solar flux index over the next seven days is in the 150 to 160s range. It does agree with our prediction of unsettled geomagnetic conditions, although with a projected Kp index of 5 today, the 2nd, falling to 4 over the next three days. We will just have to wait and see. Meanwhile, maximum useable frequencies over a 3,000km path are still exceeding 28MHz from around 0830 to 1600 UTC. As the month moves on, we can expect the amount of daylight to increase, so this period may be extended. Make the most of 160 and 80m as the optimum time for these bands has now passed. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The tail end of the previous week saw a few weak weather features as lows and a front brushed past. However, from this first weekend of February, there will be a trend to higher pressure, which will offer up some tropo opportunities at times during the coming week. There is a chance of the occasional decaying front drifting down the country but, for most of the next week, it'll be a tropo story, if anything. 50MHz has been quiet again as we await the return of maybe the last Spring equinox-style propagation of this cycle around mid-March. Meteor scatter is once again mostly down to random activity although there is one minor shower, the Capricornids-Sagittariids, which peaked yesterday, Saturday the 1st of February. Rain scatter may be somewhat rarer due to the mainly high-pressure pattern. Some auroral propagation is not without hope in view of the large coronal hole, which crossed the Sun last week. Keep a lookout for high Kp values, and keep an ear open for watery signals on the LF bands as a good sign of potential activity on the higher bands. Moon declination goes positive again today, the 2nd. With perigee having passed late yesterday, the 1st, this means that the upcoming week will be good for EME. This is especially true on the GHz bands if you have a clear view of the horizon. 144MHz sky noise is low, rising to moderate next weekend. One final note: there have been some access problems with the data feeds for the Propquest website. Hopefully, these are temporary and have fixed themselves by the time you hear this broadcast. The other data plots such as jet stream charts should continue to update so there is plenty to look at on the other pages. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

IHow oona do? (Gullah Geechee for “How are you?”)I'm a Singer/Songwriter/Writer/Performer. My creative and performance energies for more than 30 years have filled many with cultural appreciation, celebration, encouragement, and joy! I've been recognized as a cultural preservationist for my original songs, writings, performances, and presentations. If you in any way have found meaning, understanding, or Aha!-moments about Gullah Geechee culture or heritage through any of my efforts, I am deeply honored! I'm about making a difference and sharing the truth. I use that “big voice” I've had since I was a young boy, leading spirituals and gospel songs in my St. Helena Island, SC, community and making listeners feel the lyrics and not just hear them. Writing and performing songs with keen and piercing stories and sometimes jes plain jokey (or fun). I am a recipient of the 1996 South Carolina Order of the Palmetto, the State's highest honor; the 1997 State of South Carolina Folk Heritage Award, given for lifetime achievement and excellence in folk art that has enriched the lives of the people in their community and state; 1998 Daytime Emmy Award nominee and presenter; the 2007 South Carolina African American Heritage Commission's Lifetime Achievement Award; and an inductee in the 2013 Penn Center 1862 Circle. In addition to singing and songwriting, I enjoy speed walking and baking “Mr. Ron's Gullahlicious Pound Cakes” (Share a slice…if you can!). The idea for the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, or GLLKA, was born at a gathering back in 1981 at Grosse Point Lighthouse in Illinois, and in the following year the first informal meeting was held in Michigan. The organization was officially launched in 1983 and it's going strong 40 years later, remaining dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Great Lakes lighthouses. Since 1986, GLLKA has cared for the St. Helena Island Light Station on Lake Michigan, and volunteers carry out a variety of preservation projects. GLLKA also cares for the Cheboygan River Front Range Light. Wayne Sapulski with a miniature version of the Point Iroquois Light Station in Michigan. Courtesy of Wayne Sapulski. There are three guests in this episode. Wayne Sapulski is a Great Lakes lighthouse historian, author, and photographer, and a tireless volunteer for GLLKA. He's also the author of two books and many articles on Great Lakes lighthouses. One of Wayne's claims to fame is that he has physically visited all 360 lighthouses on the Great Lakes, on both the U.S. and Canadian sides. Mark and Michele VanderVelde have been involved with St. Helena Island Light Station as volunteers for well over 20 years. In 2019, Mark and Michele received the Richard L. How oona do? (Gullah Geechee for “How are you?”)I'm a Singer/Songwriter/Writer/Performer. My creative and performance energies for more than 30 years have filled many with cultural appreciation and celebration and also encouragement and joy! For my original songs, writings, performances, and presentations, I've been recognized as a cultural preservationist. If you in any way have found meaning, understanding, or Aha!-moments about Gullah Geechee culture or heritage through any of my efforts, I am deeply honored! I'm about making a difference. Sharing truth. Using that “big voice” that I've had since I was a young boy leading spirituals and gospel songs in my St. Helena Island, SC, community. Making listeners feel the lyrics and not just hear them. Writing and performing songs with stories that are keen and piercing and sometimes jes plain jokey (or rather, fun). St Helena Island is a small isolated island in the middle of the South Atlantic, some 1200 miles from the mainland of Africa. This tiny spot in the ocean played a big role as a stopover on the trade routes and as a place of exile for thousands of slaves.Such a history of use and abuse of the land and the people dumped there has led to a deeply dark and haunted place.Superstition, magic, voodoo and slavery and volcanos have created St Helena Island.Come with us as we explore this most haunted destination and what mark the slave trade has left on St Helena Island. If you loved this episode please subscribe and share it to your friends. If you want to see what Anne and Renata are up to join them on their social media platforms at Anne and Renata.Follow Anne and Renata:Facebook: @AnneAndRenataInstagram: @AnneAndRenataYouTube: @AnneAndRenataTikTok: @AnneAndRenata#africa #sthelenaisland #slavery #ghosts #hauntedsites #hauntedsthelenaisland #paranormalpodcasts #truehauntingspodcast #podcastaboutghosts #anneandrenata #frightfullygood #truehauntings #ghosts #spectres #spirits #hauntedisland #slavery #haunteddestination Hosted on Acast. Emory Shaw Campbell, author, historian, and CEO of the Cultural Heritage Consulting, discusses the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Campbell formerly served as the Director of the Penn Center on St. Helena Island from 1980 - 2002. The historic Penn Center, which opened in the 1800s to educate freed slaves was previously used as a training center and meeting place for civil rights leaders. Today it serves as a center to preserve the history and heritage of the Sea Island and Gullah culture. When Penn School first opened in 1862, it was an experimental program to educate Sea Island slaves freed at the beginning of the Civil War. Over the years, it served many functions within the community. The school's mission was to teach freed slaves trades and how to read in an effort to help them transition into an economically stable lifestyle. By the 1900s, the Penn Center had adopted Booker T. Washington's model of industrial training, and in the early stages of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's the center was often used as a meeting place and training center by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. During his tenure at the Penn Center, Campbell spearheaded efforts to create a family connection between the Gullah people and the people of Sierra Leone in West Africa. In 1988, he hosted Sierra Leone President Joseph Momoh at the Penn Center for the Gullah reunion and became an Honorary Paramount Chief in 1989, when he led the historic Gullah Reunion to Sierra Leone. In Campbell's career as Executive Director of the Penn Center he helped preserve the former school, restoring 15 of 21 buildings on campus. He also reorganized the board of trustees, developed programs for small farmland use planning, and organized the Penn Center Heritage Days Festival, one of the premier celebrations of Gullah culture in the nation. He retired from the Penn Center in 2002 and became Executive Director Emeritus of Penn Center. Immediately following his retirement, he wrote Gullah Cultural Legacies, which was first published in 2002. Mr. Campbell heads up Gullah Heritage Consulting Service and operates Gullah Heritage Trail Tours with his family. In 2008 Mr. Campbell was elected Chairman of the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, an organization empowered by the U.S. Congress to develop a program to commemorate Gullah culture in the low country region from Wilmington, North Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida. For Campbell, the dedication to preserving Gullah culture has been a labor of love and a cause that he hopes will continue to resonate with future generations.
It's almost like this book had been waiting for Margaret to write it – she lived for a few years in France growing up, has always been fascinated by Napoleon's story, and dreamed of someday writing a novel. Finally the stars aligned. Here how she was able to travel to the island of Elba in the middle of the Atlantic and actually stay in the house where Napoleon was exiled for the last four years of his life. And more importantly, hear the lost story of Albine de Montholon – a resident of the island and his last love. Margaret Rodenberg's award-winning debut novel Finding Napoleon (She Writes Press, April 2021) includes an adaptation of Napoleon Bonaparte's real attempt to write a romantic novel. Her passion for French history began when she lived in France as a young teen with her US Navy family. An avid traveler who has visited over sixty countries, she journeyed more than 30,000 miles to conduct Napoleonic research, including to St. Helena Island in the remote South Atlantic where Finding Napoleon takes place. She's a former businesswoman and a director of the Napoleonic Historical Society, a non-profit that promotes knowledge of the Napoleonic era. She's as happy in a kayak as she is in a museum. She's @margaretrodenberg on Instagram and MargaretRodenberg.author on Facebook. To learn more about Margaret, click here.

Enslaved Africans in what is now New York State and in the Middle Passage resisted their enslavement, despite the risk of doing so. In the previously accepted history of these slave revolts, the assumption was that men led the resistance, but Dr. Rebecca Hall dug deeper into the records and read against the grain to find the women warriors who fought for their freedom. Joining me to help us learn more is Dr. Rebecca Hall, a scholar, activist and educator, who writes and speaks on the history of race, gender, law and resistance, and author of the recent highly-acclaimed graphic novel, Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Episode image: “Negro quarters, T.J. In Gullah Spirituals: The Sound of Freedom and Protest in the South Carolina Sea Islands (USC Press, 2021) musicologist Eric Crawford traces Gullah/Geechee songs from their beginnings in West Africa to their height as songs for social change and Black identity in the twentieth century American South. While much has been done to study, preserve, and interpret Gullah culture in the lowcountry and sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia, some traditions like the shouting and rowing songs have been all but forgotten. Crawford talks with Walter Edgar about his work, which focuses primarily on South Carolina's St. Helena Island, illuminates the remarkable history, survival, and influence of spirituals since the earliest recordings in the 1860s.
* Margaret Rosenberg has journeyed more than 30,000 miles to conduct Napoleonic research, including to St. Helena Island in the remote South Atlantic. She is director of the Napoleonic Historical Society, a non-profit that promotes knowledge of the Napoleonic era, and on her website, margaretrodenberg.com, she reports on Napoleon's ongoing presence in world culture. * Margaret's new novel, Finding Napoleon, was inspired by Napoleon's real-life unfinished novel, which Margaret first learned about twenty years ago. * Margaret shared the origins of her interest in Napoleon, and she explained to podcast host Matthew Félix why Napoleon continues to be revered by some, reviled by others. * Margaret explained that rather than in the soldier and politician, she was more interested in Napoleon the man, and what sort of research she did to find out who he was. * Matthew and Margaret discussed key themes in the book, including Napoleon's relationship with slavery, his love of children, and his ability to forgive those who betrayed him. * Asked about craft, Margaret explained her choice to write part of the book from the first-person perspective of one of the characters and the other part—Napoleon's story—in the third person. She also discussed the challenges of writing a novel within a novel. * Margaret shared how travel revealed to her the driving force for the novel. * Matthew asked Margaret about a well-known myth about Napoleon, which she debunks in the book—and the dubious origins of that myth. Presented by University of Minnesota graduate students in Geography and Professors Queen Quet and Kate Derickson In April 2018, a packed house heard Queen Quet, the elected chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee nation, present “Free to Be Who WEBE: The Gullah/Geechee Fight for Freedom and Identity.” If you attended that presentation – or if you missed that presentation – you will want to watch this presentation, not only to learn about the history and culture of the Gullah/Geechee people, not only to hear from the remarkable Queen Quet and her colleague and East Side Freedom Library collaborator, Kate Derickson, the reader of “Stories for (Little) People” every Saturday morning at ESFL, but also to learn about “a story map” as a way of producing and presenting knowledge. Queen Quet is the Fall 2020 Winton Chair in the Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota and Dr. Kate Derickson is Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Society at the U of M, and together, they have been teaching a graduate course called “WEBE Gullah/Geechee." Students in their course collaborated to create a St. Helena Island centered StoryMap which provides a historical chronology of the South Carolina Sea Island which has been home for centuries by African-descended people who identify as Gullah and Geechee. In this evening's presentation, students will share the StoryMap and Queen Quet and Kate Derickson will discuss the collaboration and respond to your questions. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
Chapter 6, Music for Jesus Lyrics of Freedom; Chapter 7 Flight and Revolt, Runaways and Maroons Michael Row the Boat Ashore "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" is an African-american spiritual. It was first noted during the American Civil War at St. Helena Island, one of the Sea Islands of South Carolina, USA. The song was sung by former slaves whose owners had abandoned the island before the Union navy arrived to enforce a blockade. Charles Pickard Ware, an abolitionist and Harvard graduate who had come to supervise the plantations on St. Helena Island wrote the song down in music notation as he heard the freedmen sing. The lyric describes the simple crossing of the River Jordan with macabre undertones provided by reference to trumpets, eternal life and unknown lands. Despite its deathly connotations the song is affirming, a celebration of faith under oppression. ------ “This book will force many readers to reexamine their assumptions about American history… Young readers will be fascinated and better informed for having experienced this book,” wrote School Library Journal. Striking photographs highlight this unknown heritage.” — Black Child Magazine, February/March 1997 Introduction, Fighting Bondage on Land and Sea, The First Rebels, Daily Toil, Perilous Struggle, A Troublesome Property, The Battle for Family and Knowledge, Disrupting Plantation Life, Industrial and Urban Resistance, Music for Jesus, Lyrics of Freedom, Flight and Revolt, Runaways and Maroons, Revolts in the Age of Revolution, Nineteenth-Century Slave Rebels, The Fiery Abolitionists, Marching to Freedom, The Slave's Civil War, The Bayonets of Freedom, From Slave Liberation .
