Pediatrician, Marathoner and “Liver of Life” Dr. Linda Frazier and I got together for this conversation. Linda has been in practice since 1984 and continues to do fill-in work at a youth detention facility and participate in medical mission trips overseas, most recently doing Pediatric Care in an orphanage in El Salvador, Central America.  Linda is living a life fully aligned with her biology as a wife, mother, grandmother, and caretaker, and that she has a positive attitude towards life. Linda also coaches the buffalo chips youth program and recently participated in the Metabolic Reset Program before heading to Central America to do her volunteer work.. Talking Points: Linda's journey; High Carb/Low Fat and the ‘unintended consequences' Adoption of Primal OFM Lifetime PR at the Marathon Distance at the age of 64 The importance of getting rid of stress and enjoying life while still eating good food The benefits of fat adaptation and shifting away from the traditional carbohydrate-centric mindset The science behind fat oxidation during exercise and the studies that have shown the benefits of fat adaptation. The importance of maintaining Metabolic Health in order to prevent viral infections and other health issues. In the US, people consume too many carbohydrates and, physically,  do too little and how this eventually leads to a predisposed metabolism towards glucose, which can increase the risk of viral infections. The link between sugar and white cell function, and how high sugar levels can make white cells "lazy" and less effective in fighting off infections. The link between sugar and cancer, and how cancer cells require sugar to grow. Linda also mentions some research from UCLA on ovarian cancer and the benefits of a ketogenic diet. This is a program for anyone and not extreme athletes Linda is a living, breathing example of what life can be when you get your body back to burning fat as your fuel the way Nature intended so you can achieve “Higher Health & Peak Performance.”

In Episode 90 Simon Hill of The Plant Proof Podcast had us on his show to chat about Diabetes (Type 1, 1a, Pre, and Type 2) and the role that nutrition plays on insulin resistance. We go through the body of scientific literature and explain what causes insulin resistance and how to actually reverse it. Specifically we cover: Our personal journeys with Type 1 Diabetes Pathophysiology of Insulin Resistance Difference between low carb ketogenic type diets for Insulin Resistance and High Carb Low Fat diets Why Keto diets can promote insulin resistance (poorer ability to handle carbohydrates) What truly reversing insulin resistance actually means - specifically the the difference between reversing insulin resistance and managing blood glucose control Common diabetic complications and why reversing insulin resistance is so important Nutrition for reversing insulin resistance & diabetic complications (the practical stuff) and so much more Strap yourselves in this is a long one (2.5 hours) but we guarantee by the end of it you will have learned so much about Diabetes and finally understand the mechanism that causes insulin resistance and how to reverse it and improve health outcomes. Not only is this understanding important for people with Diabetes but really anyone looking to better their health, particularly anyone who is overweight (millions of people have undiagnosed pre diabetes). Insulin resistance is a spectrum and eating to promote optimal glucose tolerance means you will be able to enjoy some of the most healthful food groups in the world associated with longevity. Let's dive into the messy and complicated world of FOOD – sorting out fad diets, dogmatic food rules and discussing the different food camps that are currently popular in 2018. As registered nurses, we're not nutritionists or dietitians - but we are human. So we've had many of our own experiences around food. Plus, we've each fallen victim to the peer pressure at different stages of our lives based on our goals & we've each had our own personal journey around the discovery of the nutrition hiding in our food & the way of eating that works best for us individually. In this episode - we discuss how we got to where we our today – what our opinions are on all of it – while trying to uncomplicate it for you to understand it all better and make the best decisions for yourself in regards to food. We get personal – telling you which fad diets and dogmatic food rules we’ve subscribed to in the past and how that worked for us long term. Spoiler alert – it never works long term – it always comes back around to one basic, simple rule. Not any one single way of eating is perfect for everybody. Vegan, Vegetarian, Keto, Paleo, Macro, High Fat – Low Carb, High Carb – Low Fat, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Whole 30, 21 day fix…. The list goes on and on. But the answer is simple. Eat Real Food. Mostly Plants. Not too much. - Michael Polan said it best, and we’ve come to realize – that no matter which dogmatic food camp you may be subscribed to – we can all agree that REAL FOOD is at the core of our ultimate health and well being. Did you know….. Oreos and Coca Cola are vegan? – our point being …. No matter what group you belong too – you still need to take personal responsibility for the daily food choices you’re making while understanding the long-term effects of the foods your choosing to consume and WHY. Understanding the why behind the food we're eating will ultimately allow you to simplify your food choices long term, walk away from the rules, remove the emotional entrapment you’ve most likely felt at least once in your life around food – and we hope to allow you to begin enjoying food and the way it’s making you feel at your core – quite possibly for the first time in your life once you discover the 'why' behind our passion on this topic. In this unusual episode of The Vitality Secret Podcast, nutritional biochemist, Cyrus Khambatta and I discuss polar opposite views on approaches to nutrition for reversing pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes, and the root cause, which is insulin resistance. We discuss High Fat Low Carb, versus High Carb Low Fat – with a few similarities of methods to reverse inflammation - the cause of insulin resistance.

Meet Denise Minger. Wait, no. That's not Denise.  This is Denise. The woman above Denise is a woman from a dietary study who lost 123 pounds in just shy of a year. She's not to be confused with the woman above her, who obliterated 278 pounds in a bit over a year. All on a 90-95% carbohydrate based, high-sugar, high-starch, low-fat diet. And that's just a peek into the contents of today's podcast. But back to Denise. Denise blogs at RawFoodSOS.com, where she just released the controversial article "" That particular article is exactly what we're going to be digging into this podcast... ...but Denise is no stranger to BenGreenfieldFitness.com. Last year, I published the article "", which contains many anecdotes from Denise's book "". As a self-described health blogger, Denise typically spends about five hours a day reading and writing about nutrition. In both her writings and lectures she has a reputation for aggressively challenging today's leading voices of conventional wisdom, and is perhaps most famous for her thorough refutation of "" book. Denise is considered to be a major thorn in the side of both mainstream nutritionists and other health figures who adhere to standard dietary dogma. During my discussion with Denise, you'll discover: -Why Denise doesn't drink coffee and eats lots of sushi and sashimi... -How in the process of redeeming fat, we traded one form of oversimplified blame for another... -What carbosis is, and why you need to be very careful mixing carbohydrates with fats... -Why our current definition of low fat is very flawed, and the more appropriate definition of what low fat actually is... -The low fat history you've probably never heard... -The shocking evidence that sugar and white rice can actually cure diabetes and melt fat off the body... -How decreasing "healthy" saturated fat and increasing intake of vegetable oils has been shown in baffling research to actually benefit conditions such as multiple sclerosis... -Why it's a myth that a low-fat, high-carb vegetable diet is what eventually killed researcher Nathan Pritikin.... -Why Denise has changed her mind about some issues she had with the documentary "Forks Over Knives", and why she apologizes to vegans and vegetarians... -And much more! Do you have questions, comments or feedback about high carb vs. high fat, and Denise's new take on a high carb, low fat diet? Your own thoughts to share? Leave it all  and either Denise or I will reply!

Ask and ye shall receive. Today is Durianrider day on the podcast. And he has a message for you:Carb the f$%@ up!Aka Harley Johnstone, “Durianrider” is a self-avowed health vigilante committed to increasing public awareness of the benefits of a high carbohydrate, low-fat whole food plant-based lifestyle. A lifestyle modeled upon Doug Graham's book The 80/10/10 Diet*, or what is more commonly referred to as fruitarian — a dietary protocol based predominantly upon eating copious amounts of fruit. Let's just say it's not uncommon for Harley to proudly devour upwards of 70 bananas a day.In this regard, Harley is not alone. Although still on the fringe in terms of mainstream awareness and popularity, the 80/10/10 program is one that is gaining popularity (check out my podcast interviews with Michael Arnstein and Mac Danzig for more). But what distinguishes Harley from fellow healthy lifestyle advocates is his unique, personal style.Outspoken and unequivocal, Harley doesn't mince words. At times acerbic, and often on the perimeter of completely outlandish, Harley is a lightning rod for controversy — a role he relishes. Proponents of “fad diets” hawking unhealthy and unethical programs or snake oil products get called out. Taken to the mat. And on occasion, name-calling is involved. And don't even get him started on how he feels about the currently über-popular low-carb / no-carb / ketosis-based diets pushing high protein and copious amounts of fat.His fans are passionate. His critics equally so.But make no mistake — behind the larger-than-life personality, Harley is in many ways a regular guy leading a simple and active life, committed to helping people feel as good as he does, primarily via his YouTube channel. A guy frustrated by all the confusing and misleading health, diet and fitness information penetrating the internet, he's like Howard Beale (Peter Finch) in the 1976 movie “Network” screaming, “I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!”Durianrider may not be everyone's cup of tea. I get it. So does he. And he's fine with that. But regardless of any preconceived opinions you may harbor, I implore you to listen with an open mind. His message is powerful. And for the record – I like the guy.I hope you enjoy the show! For some background on the Harley ethos, check out this short video: Why is Durianrider So Aggressive?SHOW NOTES* CrossFit's Dirty Little Secret, by Eric Robertson (via Medium): https://medium.com/p/97bcce70356d* Book: The 80/10/10 Diet* by Douglas Graham* Durianrider Blog: http://durianrider.com/* 30 Bananas a Day Website: http://www.30bananasaday.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
