Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

What might artificial intelligence--and machine learning--mean to your future? More, perhaps, than we can imagine today.  According to professor/technologist/entrepreneur J. Scott Christianson, machine learning may soon be a core element of everyday life.  And the effects can be much more positive than people tend to think. With the right focus, Scott says, machine learning can help students determine their future careers.  It can also help in the fields of medicine, possibly facilitate breakthroughs in research, and even lead to more successful social interactions. On his website, Scott states that we can shape the future by understanding technology.  He doesn't simply say that--he's lived it. In 1996, Scott co-authored the book, Virtual Classrooms: Educational Opportunity Through Two-Way Interactive Television.  Two years later, according to his LinkedIn profile, he founded the company, Kaleidoscope Videoconferencing, which served businesses and educational institutions with videoconferencing equipment and tech support for 21 years. In other words, he was twenty-plus years ahead of today's remote conferences and distance learning. Scott, who describes himself as a "technologist who is also a teacher", currently teaches classes at the University of Missouri's Trulaske College of Business.  He also supplies a lot of great resources on AI, and on technology in general.  You can subscribe to his newsletter, The Free Range Technologist, and check out his latest recommendations for artificial intelligence resources and information at this link. Scott talked about his background, shared a number of the ways AI can positively shape the future and explored some of the current resources available for anyone who'd like to learn more. On this edition of Over Coffee® we cover: How Scott first became interested in artificial intelligence; A definition of machine learning (which is a narrow form of artificial intelligence); A "preview" look at a projected future with AI; How AI and machine learning predicted the pandemic (and are combating it); A project in which the average person can help in the research process; The ways AI could allow us to reimagine education in the future; What "brain science" is and how it can be used in the classroom; Some of the AI resources Scott recommends; Why AI and machine learning can make errors; Where we currently stand on guidelines for ethics in AI systems; Scott's recommendations for remaining employable and relevant in the future; Some of his favorite "learning experiences" while teaching his students; How machine learning can combat climate change; Several AI applications Scott enjoys using; A number of great resources if you would like to learn how to create artificial-intelligence technology; A cutting-edge technology currently active in other countries, which will probably be adopted in the U.S. "sooner rather than later" Scott's advice to his students about becoming invaluable for the future.

Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   Today’s episode takes a deep dive into the intersection of strategic risk management, pandemic preparedness, healthcare, architecture, and engineering.   In previous episodes, RIMScast has taken a look at defensive and reactive strategies to COVID-19 — but an architectural initiative that addresses future pandemics and outbreaks is a first!   Project Héroe features prefab structures that can be quickly mobilized and assembled anywhere in the world, regardless of geography or other spatial constraints. Once assembled, the modules form a fully functioning hospital that can either supplement existing healthcare infrastructure or operate independently where critical healthcare gaps exist. Justin was so awed by the designs that he asked the leaders of Project Héroe to join him on RIMScast!   From the design firm, Senior Partner David Swartz and Director of Research Peter Bacevice join Justin to discuss how they wore their risk manager hats when they planned this ambitious project, the importance of well-thought-out, improvised architecture (especially during a crisis), and how this project can be customized to meet the challenges of future pandemics and other major risks such as natural disasters.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMS’ Transitional Membership. [:26] About today’s episode. [:39] Current RIMS features, offerings, and events. [1:20] More about today’s episode with David Swartz and Peter Bacevice. [2:10] Justin welcomes David and Peter to RIMScast. [2:19] David introduces himself and shares about how he came to found Project Héroe. [3:27] Peter introduces himself and speaks about his involvement with Project Héroe. [4:25] How AI played a role in the design for Project Héroe. [5:26] What they learned in putting the project together. [7:09] David shares what motivated them to initially start Project Héroe, its main mission, and the team they brought together to make the project come to life. [8:54] How they raised capital for the project. [9:19] Where they currently are right now with Phase 2 of the project and what they’re currently trying to raise money for. [10:14] What the project represents and how it displays proactive risk management. [10:58] What they learned about mobile hospitals while working on this project. [12:02] How they’ve thought about mitigating risk and their holistic solution to address the immediate pandemic as well as future pandemics and natural disasters. [13:17] How Project Héroe is able to be customized to meet the challenges of future pandemics and other major risks such as natural disasters, man-made disasters, and beyond. [16:00] Project Héroe developed its modular healthcare architecture to cover many applications. [17:38] How Project Héroe could lead to strategic city and local government planning, even shaping the cities of the future. [19:17] Peter offers some additional thoughts around the importance of well-thought-out, improvised architecture — especially during a crisis. [21:55] With the diverse group of consultants they brought on for Project Héroe, David shares a lightbulb idea they hadn’t previously considered during the early stages of the project. [23:40] Peter touches on the educational side when facing a real-time crisis. You’re taking advantage of the benefits of AI every day in ways you might not even be aware of. When you “talk” to an automated voice on the other end of the phone, when you call a Lyft or an Uber, and when you’re asking Siri or Alexa to play your favorite song while you wash dishes. AI is everywhere, and its uses are expanding rapidly. With the application of any new technology, there’s always a period of time during which kinks that creators didn’t plan for become visible. As new systems gain traction, those unaccounted for faults can become amplified, creating patterns, which in turn can start to erode trust. One example of this when it comes to AI is how racial and gender biases that the technology was actually built to avoid can creep into the decision-making process. Another is how the AI-based algos in social media amplify extreme views and keep us all in our filter bubbles, too often fostering division. To better broadly consider the effects of such systems, it’s perhaps useful to first understand how they work – by building upon their own intelligence, collecting information from our cues and habits. We all collectively create AI in our clicks and swipes, often without considering how the data will be used by bots and algos to make decisions. In order to make this technology work well, and work well for everyone, we need to map out the channels of its proverbial brain. Our guests today are Mohsen Rezayat and Ron Bodkin. Rezayat is our Chief Solutions Architect here at Siemens Digital Industries Software. Bodkin spent the past few years as Technical Director of Applied Artificial Intelligence at Google. Currently, he’s the Vice President of AI Engineering and CIO at Vector Institute and Engineering Lead at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. In today’s episode, we’re talking about machine learning and artificial intelligence, including the complexity of establishing a system of ethics in AI so that it makes conscientious decisions and better serves our collective human community. Brad Ferris, RN worked at the bedside for many years. One of the things that frustrated Brad was the focus on the rhetoric of patient centric care, but working in a provider centric environment. Brad noticed that the way we speak to our patients is very transactional. Our interactions tend to lack warmth and empathy mostly due to the time constraints we've been placed under. Brad worked extensively in clinical research trials and came across artificial intelligence. He worked with artificial intelligence with the patients and saw some interesting results. He began to explore how artificial intelligence in text messaging could create a patient centric environment. Brad began writing scripts for the messaging that could interact with patients and help to create the beginning of a relationship. Not only that, by using AI, the messenger could answer an unlimited number of phone calls at the same time, negating the need to have a lot of staff putting patients on hold. Brad's overall big idea was to take the transactional conversations we've been having with patients and turn it into therapeutic conversations that are inviting and rewarding. Brad's innovative idea is being taken to marketplace to launch in clinics across the US to improve the conversations we are having with our patients. To learn more about Brad's company, check out his website at ClinicGrower.com Don't Miss Moments: --> How Brad discovered this idea of improving communication for our patients --> How Brad launched this business and what it took --> Why Brad thinks the way we talk to patients now has to change and how doing so will improve the bottom line of clinics across the US --> How AI can be used to change healthcare

Drew Silverstein is the co-founder and CEO of Amper Music which is a tool based on artificial intelligence that empowers anyone to create unique and professional music instantly. It’s a very cool tool for people who want to create music for their videos or any other application but might not know how to do it nor have the money to hire someone else to do it for them.Having a tool like artificial intelligence that makes music-making easier and cheaper can be very valuable but can also be very disruptive to an industry that relies on composers for library music, for example. However, technology will always make things easier and more accessible, so why should the music industry be immune to that? RPA is all about automation, and most digital workers are great at automated tasks. If you want to get into something more interesting and more valuable, however, let's talk about machine learning.    You could train a digital worker to have a bit of machine learning in it. Over time, your worker would learn to understand information, not just repeat tasks. Eventually, it could communicate its opinion to a human being and then learn from that human's opinion.    That puts digital and human workers in a closer relationship than ever.   In this episode of Generation Digital Workforce, we talk with Eric Tyree, Head of AI and Research at Blue Prism, Eric discusses human-digital interaction.   Specifically, Eric talks about: * How AI can tangibly benefit RPA * The ways AI can support commerce, not just technology * ...And what Eric believes the future of work looks like   To ensure that you never miss an episode of Generation Digital Workforce, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, or Spotify, or here.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way you could predict what works and reduce wasteful marketing spend? R.J. Talyor, CEO and Founder of Pattern89, leverage AI’s power and deep dives into creative analytics to help advertisers optimize top-performing social media ads. Most marketers focus on their brand, which is understandable. However, creative is responsible for 47% of ad performance. With more data than there are stars in the galaxy, Pattern89 can predict what will work best with over 95% accuracy. Everybody’s been talking about the surge in telehealth usage—how it would have taken, like, ten years to get as far as we’ve gotten in the past ten days. I wanted to talk to somebody who has been ramping up their telehealth capabilities for a while to get a sense of what it takes to do it well. As has been said by many, doing telehealth isn’t just about technology. It’s about training—clinicians and patients and accounts receivable and other staff. It’s about rearranging workflows and processes. So, super pleased to have had the opportunity to talk with Jonathan Thierman, MD, PhD. Dr. Thierman is an ER doc. He’s also the chief medical information officer for LifeBridge Health systems and the medical director of the LifeBridge virtual hospital. So, this show has two parts: episode 273 that you’re listening to; but the second part, episode 274, is where we’re going to get into some of the operational aspects of telehealth, like what EHR integration actually means and what it looks like. In this health care podcast (episode 273), however, Dr. Thierman and I discuss what telehealth can accomplish, maybe better than a face-to-face patient encounter, and what it’s not so good at. One thing that dawned on me as we were talking is that the technology isn’t just, you know, a video system. There’s apps, there’s AI, there’s minivans full of lab equipment … there are other innovations that expand the capability of a remote patient visit. Here’s another point to ponder that Dr. Thierman and I explore a little bit. What is the impact of telehealth in a value-based care environment but also in an FFS (fee-for-service) reimbursement model? It’s likely, if you think about it, there will be more patient visits because the barrier to getting care has diminished. And that might be a good thing if we’re talking about chronic care, if we’re talking about ensuring follow-up after a surgical procedure. There’s any number of examples where patients getting help prior to some sort of acute event would be considered a good thing by most. But does improving access to care increase a patient’s chances of getting inappropriate care? You know, 25+% of care is some variation of waste, fraud, and abuse; and additional services rendered always have the risk of negative consequences. Or do we figure that bad actors are doing a pretty good job behaving badly anyway, so the net positive for the rest of us is worth it? You can learn more at lifebridgehealth.org. You can also follow Dr. Thierman on Twitter at @techie_doc or connect with him on LinkedIn.  Jonathan Thierman, MD, PhD, is physician executive in the LifeBridge Health system and president of the medical staff at Northwest Hospital. He started his career as an engineer and inventor, earning his PhD at MIT and then training in emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins Hospital. In the past, he has worked to bring real-world clinical experience to the engineering and design of medical devices. Currently, he is the chief medical information officer for the LifeBridge Health system in Baltimore, where he leads a team of physician informaticists to interface between the 180+-person IT department and the 3000+ affiliated physicians across five hospitals and in community practices on matters of the EMR, CPOE, and other health IT systems. Dr. Thierman is passionate about applying technology to improve health and outcomes. To this end, he helped to establish the LifeBridge Health Virtual Hospital, with affiliated clinical call centers in Jerusalem and the Philippines, to provide telemedicine services across the continuum. He also created the LifeBridge Techbar to offer in-person IS assistance to LifeBridge providers. In addition, he developed a patient “Digital Front Door” to help direct patients to the right care center with the least wait time, improving patient experience and load-balancing the emergency departments and urgent care centers in the LifeBridge Health system. 03:26 What was happening with telehealth pre-COVID-19. 04:50 What’s happened to telehealth and primary care practices post-COVID-19. 06:28 How quickly telehealth medicine appointments are growing. 07:30 What percentage of patients are doctors able to see via telemedicine? 08:24 Are patients getting adequately cared for? 10:20 “The vast majority of medicine, except for surgical services, really is a mental game.” 14:15 “If you have a window into the home, you probably have a better view of the social determinants of health.” 14:25 How AI plays into telemedicine right now. 16:52 Where telehealth visits will land after the pandemic. 18:40 “When you improve access, you also improve demand.” 19:22 Is telehealth consumer driven? 20:48 “For the most part, patients are most connected to their actual physician.” 21:37 Why more frequent touch points via telehealth will benefit health care quality and costs in the future. 28:20 “It’s about the patient, and it’s about really keeping them well.” You can learn more at lifebridgehealth.org. Contact: matt@metashift.co.uk The changing nature of assessment is something we have covered from several different angles on this show before with contributions from both practitioners and consultants. However, to date, we haven't actually heard the vendor point of view in all of this. So with that in mind, my guest this week is Sam Whiteman, Head of Product Strategy at SHL. In the interview, we discuss: • How technology has evolved assessment over time • Using AI as a capability to drive specific outcomes • How AI can be used to find hidden gems in the candidate pool • The evolution of video interviewing • Giving candidates more value by building an interactive assessment experience • The importance of people and machines working together to be better • The problem of algorithmic bias and how to avoid it • The future of assessment Subscribe to this podcast in Apple Podcasts
