Currently appointed at Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S., he has published more than 50 research and clinical papers and book chapters on veterinary aspects of wildlife and marine species.In 1995, he initiated a WWF-funded research program elucidating the biology of the leatherback sea turtle in the North Atlantic Ocean which resulted in the creation of the Canadian Sea Turtle Network. In 2003, he developed a diving research program using telemetry to investigate the biology and ecology of the Greenland shark and continues to use similar techniques in the study of another elusive species, the Atlantic Torpedo ray. Since 2018, Harvey-Clark has been active in research and conservation efforts focussed on the restoration of the severely endangered Atlantic Whitefish.As part of a lifetime of support for citizen science and facilitating marine environmental conservation, he has written, filmed and hosted more than 30 natural history documentaries for Discovery Channel, BBC, National Film Board of Canada, History Channel, Netflix and National Geographic. An avid underwater image maker and diver since 1976, he participated in the creation of the late Rob Stewarts famous documentary Sharkwater II; Extinction. He wrote the first photo-illustrated marine life guide to the Maritimes, Eastern Tidepool and Reef, in 1996, a Canadian bestseller. In 2021 he published an expanded new guide, Maritime Marine Life. What if you could become the boss of your fear? What difference would that make?  All of us experience fear. It’s part of life. But not all of us know how to master our fear so that it doesn’t get the best of us. In this episode, you’ll learn how to put fear in its place so you can live with more guts and gusto. And you’ll learn how your Mortality can become a powerful ally in the ever-present battle with fear.    From Fearful To Forward It was early in the morning one day six years ago, and my wife and two boys were still asleep. I, however, was wide awake...lying prostrate on the living room floor. This was not a relaxed “prostrate,” a slow, stretchy, meditative, welcoming-of-a-new-day kind of prostrate. This was a “holy crap, I’m scared out of my mind, all I can do is lay here” kind of prostrate. Super fun.  Over the previous few years, it had become unavoidably clear that I needed a change professionally and we needed a change as a family, too. To figure out what kind of change, we had worked a long, insightful, and highly-structured process with a coach--my first experience with a coaching partnership. We’d weighed pros and cons, clearly envisioned a better, more desirable, more satisfying life; taken a weekend retreat as a couple and a week-long retreat with my coach and his wife; made “low-cost probes” into various options; gained useful insight through assessments, and gotten counsel from family and friends. We’d invested a lot of time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears into the process, and eventually it had yielded the clarity we sought about the kind of changes we wanted to make.  And yet here I was--prostrate on the living room floor, scared to death to pull the trigger on a decision. Evidently, just knowing what kind of changes we wanted to make wasn’t enough. One insight helped me go from fearful to moving forward. Tune in to the full episode for the rest of the story. The mental and emotional change within me was instantaneous and exhilarating. When my wife entered the room a few minutes later, the first words out of my mouth were, “Let’s go.”   How is Fear Bossing YOU Around?  That’s an example from my life. But what about you? In what areas of your life does fear hold you back or push you down or get the best of you?  What difference would it make if you began to be the boss of that fear rather than it being the boss of you?   How Do You Become the Boss of Your Fear? Let’s be honest: Life is full of stuff that’s legitimately scary. There’s simply no changing that fact. Dangers abound even on the best of days. Big leaps and new adventures bring real risks. This episode aired in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fear and uncertainty was palpable and global and no one knew how it would all play out.  So in a world full of fear-inducing realities, here’s the big idea that I want you to wrestle with… The way to master fear is not to become less fearful.  The way to master fear is to become more brave.  None of us would expect to get physically stronger simply by telling our weakness to go away. Nor would we expect to get stronger just by hanging around a bunch of weights or envisioning ourselves as stronger or meditating about bigger muscles--as useful as envisioning and meditating are in their own ways. We know that getting physically stronger requires putting in the consistent work to build more muscle. And that’s hard work. But gradually, you do get stronger. And weight that was once impossible to lift becomes your new normal.  The same is true in mastering fear. We have to put in the work to build bigger bravery muscles so we can throw fear around more easily in the weight room of life.    Your Mortality: Steroids for Bravery-building On this podcast, we tap into the power of our mortality to become the people we were made to be and live the lives we were made to live. And perhaps nowhere in life is our Mortality a more powerful ally than in our battle against fear. It is to bravery-building what steroids is to body-building--except for the whole illegal and unhealthy thing. When fear comes knocking, remind yourself that the clock of life is ticking. And tell fear to step aside as you charge ahead anyway.  Will Smith has said, “The best things in life are on the other side of fear.” I totally agree.  If you’re scared, practice being brave. Conscious Millionaire's know they can create whatever they desire. Conscious millionaires choose what they want instead of focusing on what they don't want. When you know that you are the only one who knows what is right for you, that you are capable of handling whatever comes your way, and that you are clear on your intentions or the outcome you choose to create. What other thing I've observed with Conscious Millionaires is that They Take Inspired Action in order to keep the momentum going. Like, if you want to earn $100,000 a year with your current position at a company you are working for, then they motivate themselves to get to that positions by strong work ethics. They also don't take unnecessary action. Instead, they use the leverage of energy, the same leverage of energy that creates everything in the universe. Conscious Millionaires Maintain an Attitude of Gratitude. Gratitude speeds along the manifestation of your desires. Conscious Millionaires know that every time they flood their mind with appreciation or gratitude they attract more of what they desire. Find something to be grateful for right now and get into the authentic feeling of true gratitude. When you put these three principles into practice for yourself, you will start getting results. Dr. Sean Mcfate is a strategic maverick. He is an author, novelist, and expert in foreign policy and national security strategy and is a professor of strategy at the National Defense University and Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He began his career as a paratrooper and officer in the U.S. Army's storied 82nd Airborne Division. Among his many experiences, he dealt with warlords, raised small armies, worked with armed groups in the Sahara, transacted arms deals in Eastern Europe, and helped prevent an impending genocide in the Rwanda region. Looking forward as the new face of war and the new rules of war. After reading his newest book, The New Rules of War: Victory in the Age of Durable Disorder, you will agree, it is fantastic. And I have heard, it is generating a lot of discussion inside the Pentagon.   How Do You Become a Mercenary? Dr. Sean McFate shares his early years in the 1990s where it all began. From his life as a paratrooper to working for a private military company in Africa in the 2000s. His story is one we only hear about in action movies and spy game novels. But this, however, was Dr. McFate's life, and the lives of many many people. We try to think that maybe things like this don't happen to real people, that it is a concept for the movies, but let me tell you, these people are real and they have been in existence for thousands of years. He was a private military contractor which is a euphemism for a mercenary. Pope felt it was his duty to read everything he could get his hands on about the history of UFO sightings and leading theories about their origins, including fanciful conspiracies. After he left the UFO desk in 1994, but while still at the MoD, he co-authored a book with some of the key witnesses in the Rendelsham Forest incident, known as England's Roswell. Pope would not call himself a ufologist, rather a UFO investigator.  As such, no traditional colleges or universities offer degree programs in ufology, but there are some online options. International Metaphysical University offers six courses in Ufology Studies, including Introduction to Ufology taught by Richard Dolan, a well-known expert who also has a history degree from Alfred University. The 12-lecture online course covers topics such as "What are UFOs?," "Theories of Ancient Visitation," and "The Early Cover-Up." Courses cost between $200 and $400 each. Two other online universities -- the Centre of Excellence in the U.K. and the IMHS Metaphysical Institute -- offer full degree programs in ufology. It's hard to imagine a better conversation-starter than, "I recently got my Ph.D. in Ufology with a specialization in abduction research." Cost for that "advanced" degree is under $2,000.
