Amanda Montei's fascination with understanding motherhood started long before she became a parent herself. However, it wasn't until she embarked on her PhD journey while welcoming her first child that she began to approach motherhood through a scholarly lens. In her illuminating book, "Touched Out: Motherhood, Misogyny, Consent, and Control," Amanda dissects the nuanced layers of societal expectations and judgments that surround women's bodies, particularly during motherhood, reminding us to be attentive to the stories that are being told to us.Join us for a deep and fascinating episode as Erin and Amanda delve into the complexities of motherhood, dissecting societal norms, reclaiming bodily autonomy, and advocating for systemic reform. This conversation will encourage you to question the “expert” advice around motherhood spouted on social media, and instead to lean into your support systems, embrace your individuality, and set boundaries. Here's what's on the table:How societal pressures encroach upon women's bodily autonomy in motherhood and beyond–and why we have to continuing questioning these expectationsExploring the oppressive nature of advice-driven parenting culture online and its isolating impact on mothersHow the lack of systemic support, including paid leave, affordable childcare, and gender equity in parenting responsibilities, exacerbates the challenges faced by mothers.Embracing advice from community support systems, rather than parenting experts and social media gurusHow embracing your individuality and setting boundaries in motherhood, not only empowers mothers, but also models these essential behaviors for childrenOUR GUEST: Amanda Montei is the author of TOUCHED OUT: Motherhood, Misogyny, Consent, & Control (Beacon Press), as well as the memoir Two Memoirs (Jaded Ibis Press) and The Failure Age (Bloof Books). Lauren has a genuinely hilarious conversation with comedian and podcaster Carmen Lagala, who spills all the details of her recent coming out story! Carmen grew up in Vermont, which is arguably one of the very best states to be a queer woman (hiking; leftists; liberal arts colleges; you get it). Carmen was so sure that she *wasn't* queer, however, that when a lesbian rumor spread during her freshman year of high school, she actually came out to her family as straight. Carmen, who now identifies as pansexual, describes having "teenage boy levels" of horniness as an adolescent, while simultaneously carrying a deep shame about sex in general, and masturbation in particular. She discusses how being in back-to-back relationships with men led to her feeling like her sexual attraction to women somehow didn't count, and how coming out on stage actually helped her get past that ("it legitimized it to me as soon as people laughed at what I was saying"). Also, Carmen shares her high school obsession with G.I. Jane, and Lauren tells a story about Michelle Rodriguez that she probably shouldn't!Follow Carmen on Instagram at @carmstagrams and on Twitter at @CarmenLagala, and subscribe to her YouTube channel at youtube.com/@carmenlagalacomedy! THE RUNDOWN This first episode is the proud rebirth of our weekly audio magazine, rabble radio. Rabble radio tunes in on the issues and actions that matter to you. And, this week, what could be more timely and top-of-mind than a federal election. Well, okay, the Delta variant and Afghanistan, but it's top of mind for us because of the Off the Hill event we hosted last Wednesday night. More on that below. BTW, if you like what you hear, remember we here at rabble.ca cover and produce a lot more timely news, commentary and even events online. You can find it all at rabble.ca. OFF THE HILL Last Wednesday night rabble.ca presented our monthly edition of "Off the Hill" - a panel that takes a look at federal politics from a progressive, grassroots perspective. This month, the theme was "Election 44: No Time to Waste on the Status Quo." Our esteemed panelists included: former NDP MP Libby Davies, climate activist Diana Yoon, Indigenous activist and educator Rachel Snow and rabble's own columnist and policy expert Chuka Ejeckman. Here's the first twenty minutes of their discussion, hosted by the Ottawa-based Robin Browne. We bring you the first 20 minutes in this podcast. If you'd like to hear the full length discussion you can check it out at https://rabble.ca/rabbletv/. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Here's a rundown of this week's top headlines on rabble.ca. Introducing rabble.ca's new national politics reporter: Stephen Wentzell profiled Kitchener Centre NDP candidate Beisan Zubi in his rabble debut, speaking with Zubi about how her own experience with housing precarity and the affordability crisis has informed her politics. Keep an eye out for more "candidates to watch" -- a special series profiling up-and-coming progressive candidates who are here to shake things up.  Economist Jim Stanford warns of coming austerity measures if the Conservatives manage to win a majority next month. "The pandemic proved something progressives argued for years: there is virtually no financial constraint to the ability of governments to mobilize resources in the interests of social and environmental well-being -- if they choose to do so," he writes. This challenges just about everything the Conservatives stand for, and all of the progress made during the pandemic could quickly be undone if O'Toole finds power. The election issues In this month's Pro Bono column, lawyer Celia Chandler reflects back on how she seems to be writing about the same thing every election cycle: the housing crisis. Will this time be any different? Street Nurse Cathy Crowe and professor David Hulchanski take readers through how the decades-long housing crisis has manifested.  Plus, Linda McQuaig makes the case that this election should not, in fact, be about the climate crisis, but instead about curtailing the power and influence of the fossil fuel industry, which at this point, pulls far too many strings.  Accountability on Afghanistan Columnist Matthew Behrens wrote a scathing and insightful indictment of Canada's well-documented war crimes in Afghanistan.  Monia Mazigh joined Behrens in calling for a public inquiry into Canada's involvement in the twenty-year, fruitless war. And, Rick Salutin looked back at what started it all: 9/11.  From our In Cahoots partners this week: The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees is filing formal policy grievances against employers, including AHS, for refusing to acknowledge the newly created National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. With September approaching, Ontario's teacher unions believe that everyone working in, or attending a school who is eligible and can be safely vaccinated, should be vaccinated, according to a statement from the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario. Now, a look at five not-to-be missed headlines: Rita Wong: RCMP at Fairy Creek blockade ignore the real emergency David Climenhaga: Where is Jason Kenney? Alberta premier unseen since August 9 as COVID cases rise Martha Friendly: Conservatives go back to the future for child-care proposals in this federal election Sara Speicher: Afghanistan: Is digital communication a blessing or curse? David Suzuki: Federal election requires serious shift on climate, justice and health THE MUSICAL QUESTION Oh, and the music for this podcast? It's the jazz stylings of our political boffin, Karl Nerenberg. Such a polymath. ENDNOTES Got feedback on the show? Great. Send it along to editor@rabble.ca. We'd love to hear from you. And you'll find lots more at rabble.ca. Until next time: Stay informed, stay active and register to vote. OFF THE HILL PANELISTS Robin Browne is Off the Hill's co-host. Robin is a communications professional and the co-lead of the 613-819 Black Hub, living in Ottawa. His blog is The "True" North. Libby Davies is author of Outside In: a Political Memoir. She served as the MP for Vancouver East from 1997-2015, and is former NDP Deputy Leader and House Leader, and is a recipient of the Order of Canada. Chuka Ejeckam is a political researcher and writer, and works in the labour movement in British Columbia. He focuses on political and economic inequity and inequality, both within Canada and as produced by Canadian policy. Read Chuka's regular column on rabble.ca. Rachel Snow is Iyahe Nakoda, the daughter of late Reverend Dr. Chief John Snow. She holds a juris doctor from the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan and is an outspoken educator, speaker, writer and co-contact person for the Indigneous Activist Networks. Rachel resides on her ancestral lands in Mini Thni which is west of Calgary, Alberta. Diana Yoon is a climate and housing justice activist and community organizer based in Toronto/Tkaronto. Diana works as the climate specialist at Toronto Environmental Alliance, a leading environmental advocacy non-profit, while pursuing her Masters. Diana ran in the 2019 federal election as the NDP candidate in Spadina-Fort York and sits as an Ontario Rep for NDP Federal Council.

Vince Zangaro: (https://dementiaspotlightfoundation.org/) Zangaro's Alzheimer's journey began over a decade ago at the age of 29 after his father's Alzheimer's diagnosis. At 68 years old, the elder Zangaro's health rapidly declined, leaving him unable to care for himself – and that's where his son, Vincent stepped up. Driven by the challenges he faced navigating the ups and downs of his father's disorder and health, a fire was lit in Zangaro to offer help to those living and affected by Alzheimer's and dementia-related illness. Combining his expertise within the music industry, a decade-long career as a regional staffing director at mega-brand Hot Topic and years of Alzheimer's caregiving experience for his father, Zangaro flexed his creativity, leadership, love, and passion for music by founding the Alzheimer's Music Fest in 2013, with the goal to raise awareness and funds to help families care for loved ones. Zangaro supports DSF by overseeing outreach initiatives and actions, serving as the Director of Development and Special Events. As a full-time advocate for Alzheimer's and dementia families, Zangaro plans events and secures much-needed grants and sponsorships. He also oversees the Atlanta and Tampa Alzheimer's Music Fests. In 2001, I was in San Diego at the iconic Jack Murphy Stadium playing for the Oakland A's...  Batting practice had just concluded, and I saw this very attractive young lady holding court behind home plate… She was entertaining a group of sponsors and just seemed to have a presence about her that was incredibly warming and immensely impressive. I sat on the dugout bench and became mesmerized as she captivated everyone's attention. My teammate, Mark Bellhorn, then came and sat beside me then chimed in...  “You don't have the balls to talk to her.”  Just as he said that, she led the group off the field and into the stands through the home side, so even if I did have the nut sack, communication was no longer possible... As soon as we got back to the locker room, I pulled out a 100 dollar bill and gave it to Bellhorn. I told him to keep the 100 if I don't find a way to talk to her the next day, and if I did, all I wanted was my 100 back. The following day, BP concluded again and she was in the same spot behind home plate entertaining a different group... This time, I asked a man who was nearby to please tell the girl that I had a question and would love it if she could quickly come by the dugout.  The man walked over, got in her ear and then with an eye roll and reluctant look, she made her way to the dugout...  When she arrived, I figured out she was working for the Pad Squad (think community relations meet cheerleaders) and said... “How can I help you?”  Completely flustered, I became tongue tied for one of the first times in my life and then panicked... I frantically looked around and reacted to the first thing I saw, which was a cute little boy sitting a few feet down from me...  “Ugh... This is my little buddy that wanted to meet you!”  She responded... “That's funny, because I already know him... Hi Caden!”  The kid then immediately chimed in...  “Hi Tarah!”  Damn... I was caught red handed and had no choice but to fess up... “Sorry... I wanted to meet you but got really nervous when you walked over here so decided to use little Caden here as a prop... I'm Eric.” Small talk ensued and we ended up meeting at In Cahoots later that night for some country line dancing and a couple of adult beverages...  I got her number and it was a good thing because I got sent down to Sacramento the next day when I got to the ballpark. The following week she was making a road trip to see her best friend Nicole in Berkeley, so I convinced her and her other best friend, Amanda Panda, to make a pit stop in Sacramento. When they arrived, she was as awesome as I could have ever hoped for... That's when Amanda broke the news that Tarah was “Miss Greater San Diego” and then revealed she was going to compete in the “Miss California” pageant the next month. Over that month our relationship developed quickly and I even sent her flowers before the competition knowing damn well that even as awesome as she was, the chances of her winning Miss California competing against 100 other girls were slim to none...  Guess I should have known better. She won.  Fast forward about 19 years, 3 kids and a lifetime worth of experiences together, I can say with the greatest conviction that I couldn't have asked for a better wife and mother to my 3 children. As you can probably imagine, I am not always the easiest person to deal with and if there was ever anybody on earth that has the strength, courage and stamina to keep up with my ass, it's Tarah...  So, why today did I decide to bore you Daily Hustlers with this sappy Jack Murphy, In Cahoots, Sac Town, Beauty Pageant love story?  Well...
