Lieve Monnens was born in Belgium in the 1960s. She had a musical awakening when she was eleven years old through listening to her dad's records by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys. She became interested in going to live shows, then later took internships with radio and record companies which led to several jobs in the music industry. In 1990, Lieve moved to England and began working at Factory Records in Manchester, only 2 and a half years before the label dissolved. Over thirty years later, she has been featured in the book, I Thought I Heard You Speak: Women at Factory Records by Audrey Golden, which has just been released in the U.S. She offers her thoughts on the experience of being a woman at Factory at the time, what it's like looking back, and the importance of recording our lesser-known histories. After introducing the show, co-hosts Wendy Sheridan and Robin Renée share their This Fortnight I Learned facts; Wendy learned something cool where Babylon 5 meets International Women's Day, while Robin copped out and read the day's Google Doodle fact about fancy coffee drinks. Just the Tip news includes the State of the Union address and the Katie Britt response, Greta Thunberg climate protest, the passing of Akira Toriyama, and The Oscars. A call by Rosemarie Mallet, Bishop of Croydon for the Church of England to pay hefty reparations for chattel slavery, decreasing power of anti-trans talking points, SCOTUS taking up the presidential immunity question, and more are discussed In Deep. In The Earthscape segment, Wendy leads a discussion on early spring gardening. Robin nominates Clementine Morrigan as Lefty of the Week. Things to do: Get the book! Mark joins the show to chat about his new album, Smiling. Joining the show is Olivia Cuttill as a guest host. Saxophonist and composer Mark Lockheart first came to prominence in the mid 1980s with the influential big band Loose Tubes. In 1992 Mark formed the eclectic co-led quartet Perfect Houseplants, a group that released six albums and collaborated with classical artists such as the Orlando Consort, Andrew Manze and Pamela Thorby. The mid-90s saw Mark recording and performing with many jazz, folk and pop artists, including Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, June Tabor, Stereolab, Jah Wobble, Robert Wyatt, Prefab Sprout, Don Um Romao, Thomas Dolby and Radiohead. In 2003 Mark joined Seb Rochford's Polar Bear, which over a period of 12 years recorded six ground-breaking albums. The band's second album, Held On The Tips Of Fingers, was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Award and later appeared in Jazzwise's 100 Albums That Shook the World. The band's fifth album, In Each And Every Way, was also nominated for a Mercury Award in 2013. In 2007 Mark was a featured soloist (along with John Pattitucci and Gwilym Simcock) in Mark Anthony Turnage's About Water, which premiered on the Southbank in June 2007. Mark collaborated several times more with Turnage, performing his A Man Descending with the Southbank Sinfonia in 2008 and more recently as one of the featured musicians in Turnage's opera Anna Nicole, which premiered at the Royal Opera House in London in 2011. In 2009 Mark's quintet album In Deep was released to critical acclaim. The following year saw the release of Mark's first big band album Days Like These with the Hamburg-based NDR big band. That same year Mark was awarded APPJC Parliamentary Jazz Musician of the Year 2010. In 2013 Mark released Ellington In Anticipation, a radical reworking of Ellington melodies with an all-star line up including Seb Rochford and Liam Noble. The album received numerous four and five-star reviews and was MOJO magazine's Jazz Album of 2013 and nominated as Best Jazz CD of 2013 by the APPJC at the 2014 Parliamentary Awards. An invitation to perform at the New York Rochester Jazz Festival in 2014 led to the formation of Mark's trio, Malija, with bassist Jasper Hoiby and pianist Liam Noble. Malija's debut album The Day I Had Everything was released in December 2015 to critical acclaim. The group's second album Instinct was released in 2017 followed by a 21-date tour. In 2016 Mark was awarded Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the Year and also nominated for the British Composer Awards for his composition With One Voice. A few years later saw the birth of two very contrasting projects , the jazz/orchestral work titled Days On Earth for jazz sextet and 30-piece orchestra, released on Edition Records in January 2019 and a set of English Renaissance music ‘Salvator Mundi' recorded at Temple church in London with organist Roger Sayer.mosaic: Exploring Jewish Issuesmosaic is Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County's news magazine show, exploring Jewish...Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

Presented by Quiksilver Lipped Foreign Correspondent is an all new series featuring solo Harry Mann in Bali. Bali has long been an epicentre of global surfing and a stop on all travelling surfers hit lists. With this in mind Harry will look to catch up with an eclectic mix of surfers and characters in the new Lipped Indo headquarters. First cab off the rank is Matt George. Surfer, writer, Hollywood star - curious human. Matt chats about coming to Bali, stories from his new book In Deep, why womens surfing is the cats pyjamas, what's wrong and right with surfing and gives Jimmy some advice on running comps in wave pools. Plenty of Dragon Luma Lens highlights and look for a bonus reading of his Layne Beachley story later this week. It's fuelled by Heaps Normal (and some Island Brewing beers) and supported by Surfboard Empire.
Despite facing misogyny prevalent in the surf industry, Matt George, a renowned surf journalist and Senior Contributing Editor at SURFER for over 35 years, has been an advocate for women in surfing. In his new book, In Deep, you'll discover an anthology of Matt's most influential articles and photographs, including stories about courageous women in surfing. From a young Bethany Hamilton's shark attack as told from the perspective of the apex predator to a feature about Keala Kennelly that inadvertently outed her to her family. However, this episode goes beyond 'In Deep,' bridging the gap between new surf media and traditional surf media. We dive into the contrast between a WOC self-published podcast like 'Confessions of a Surf Lady' and the traditional, white-male dominated world of one of the most influential surf publications of all time, SURFER Magazine.Throughout the episode, we explore Matt's top tips for aspiring journalists and he shares his confessions on some of our most popular topics. But most importantly, Matt imparts empowering words of advice to all surf ladies on navigating a blossoming women's surf culture and industry. This episode is packed with practical writing advice, genuine surf stories, and thought-provoking conversations that you won't want to miss.Main ThemesAbout In-Deep: "It is a collection of stories that really reflect the zeitgeist. As the title In Deep implies, it gets very, very much behind the curtain of professional surfers, professional contests, professional people, and the great surf spots of the world." — Matt George [03:00 → 03:19]Women in Surfing: "In my experience, Laura, I have found all the female surfers that I've written about are very courageous and very powerful. While all the men that I've written about, I've found them very vulnerable, almost weak compared to the women." — Matt George [08:46 → 09:03]The Art of Journalism: "When I meet someone to do something as personal as a profile, as a featured article, I very much look for what they're not saying. Not exactly what they're saying, but what they're not saying."— Matt George [09:51 → 10:06]Connected to the Cosmos: "As surfers, we are a very unique, fringe dwelling tribe and we are connected to something absolutely extraordinary, connected to the cosmos, different than other sports." — Matt George [11:45 → 11:57]Diversity and Inclusion: "Having a conversation with you, someone that's worked intimately in a male dominated surf industry for decades, and hearing that there have been advocates for people like me. It's comforting, because for women, like me, still face misogynistic attitudes in the lineup." — Laura Day [14:44 → 15:09]ResourcesFollow us your host Laura Day: @confessionsofasurfladyFollow The Surf Société: @surfsociete for surf lady tips from #thesurflab inside the membershipPurchase In Deep by Matt George at DiAngelo PublicationsFollow Matt on Instagram: @mattgeorge_in_deepWatch Matt's Film: In God's Hands on AmazonSupport the showConfessions of a Surf Lady is supported by The Surf Société, our unique digital women's surfing platform where we come together to Learn More. Coach Chris sits down with Matt George to discuss his book In Deep, a highly recommended read, which is a compilation of his life's work as a surf writer and journalist. The book covers some serious ground in the surf world, but it's only on KookCast you'll get to hear some of the insights you won't find anywhere else. Brought to you by Better Beer's Arvo Ale...today's episode features one of the greatest surf journalists of all-time, Matt George. Matt's unique gonzo style saw him sleeping on Kelly Slater's mum's floor to get the scoop, shacking up with Cheyne Horan in Goonengerry, living with the Hamilton family just days after Bethany had lost her arm to a shark attack and much more. His work has now been compiled into a book called, In-Deep which you can by following this link. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If you live with the myths in your mind, you will find yourself always in mythological situations. They cover everything that can happen to you. And that enables you to interpret the myth in relation to life, as well as life in relation to myth. - Joseph CampbellOur guest is former pro surfer, writer, rescue and relief activist, Matt George. He is someone who helped to create and build the myths that make up surf history. For our guest, surfing became more than a sport. It became a world unto itself. A religion. A quest. An odyssey full of fables, tall tales and more..His profile pieces elevated the standard surf magazine profile. He was not afraid to be critical. He would dive deep to get to know his subjects, spending days attached to their hips. He may not have always wrote what the surfers wanted but, he was fair and gave us, the readers an honest view into who these surfers were as people. His commitment to surfing is something to be admired. In a world where there is so much cynicism, his earnestness and blind faith in surfing as something more than just a sport or hobby, is refreshing and inspiring. Matt has just released a compilation of his writings in the book titled “In Deep” published by Di Angelo Publications. Matt has touted this book as an antidote to the synthetic image of surfing that is being promoted today. It's a fun read that really captures the times they were written in but, I would also dare say, they could be something of an inspiration for younger surfers to explore the world around them. Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Blizzards. Flooding. Over the past 20 years, we’ve seen a staggering increase in extreme weather events, resulting in millions of deaths and trillions of dollars of damage around the globe. This increase has made the stakes for precise and accurate forecasts higher than ever — but the best forecast is useless if people don’t act on the information. On this episode, we explore what scientists are learning, not only about predicting extreme weather, but also about how to deliver their message in a way that will compel people to heed their warnings. Then we’ll look into the aftermath of storms, how communities attempt to recover — and be better prepared for the next storm. We hear stories about a storm-chaser’s mission to understand tornadoes, how the blizzard of 1993 settled a long debate over meteorological predictions, what happens when storms keep patients from life-saving treatments, and how communities rebuild — or don’t — after being ravaged by severe weather events. Also heard on this week’s episode: We talk with storm-chaser and scientist Adam Houston about his mission to solve a longtime mystery: the exact conditions in which supercell thunderstorms generate tornadoes. Adam leads a team of researchers who are trying to gather better data to make more exact predictions. Most of us take weather forecasts for granted — but as it turns out, decades of research and debate went into creating a prediction model that works. In 1993, that model was still in question — until the east coast of the U.S. was slammed by the “blizzard of the century.” Jad Sleiman reports. Extreme weather forecasts can save lives — but that doesn’t mean the public always listens. Reporter Kerry Sheridan experienced that first-hand when she rode out Hurricane Ian, a massive and deadly Category 4 storm that recently hit southwest Florida. She tells the story of how extreme weather events are prompting meteorologists to change the way they deliver their warnings. When a freak snowstorm knocked out power and water in Texas back in 2021, thousands of dialysis patients were left in the lurch. Many found themselves trapped in their homes, unable to access life-saving treatment as deadly toxins built up in their blood. Reporter Sara Willa Ernst has this story on what happened — and Texas’ efforts to prepare better for future storms. Escaping extreme weather is one thing — but how do communities rebuild after devastating damage? That’s the topic of the new podcast “In Deep,” which follows residents of Lake Charles — a small city in Southwest Louisiana — that over the past few years was pummeled by consecutive hurricanes and a severe blizzard. We hear an excerpt from the podcast, and talk with reporter and host Lauren Rosenthal about the toll all of this has taken on Lake Charles residents.
From the Water Main at American Public Media, season 2 of the podcast In Deep takes listeners to Lake Charles, Louisiana to learn how residents are recovering from two hurricanes, an ice storm, and empty promises from the government. Investigative reporter for APM Reports and podcast host Lauren Rosenthal tells us more about those forced to rebuild and relocate, as well as the volunteers who do anything possible to keep their community afloat. Jazz lovers and photo enthusiasts can unite at the West Baton Rouge Museum where a collection of largely unseen photographs gives viewers a rare behind the scenes look at singer Billie Holiday. Museum executive director Angelique Bergeron tells us more about the exhibition, Billie Holiday at Sugar Hill: Photographs by Jerry Dantzic. But first, today is election day in Louisiana and across the country. WRKF's Paul Braun joins us for last-minute voting information and the elections to watch out for. We've inputted the data for this weeks guest and while her character in Bottom is a bit raggy round the edges, in real life she's an absolute cracker. She's a stage, screen and comedy veteren who's appeared in The Dark Crystal, In Deep, The Bill, The Russ Abbot and Les Dennis shows and at 27 landed her own prime time BBC1 sketch show. It's our favourite love bureau matchmaker Lily Lineker herself; it's Lisa Maxwell! Lisa discusses her training at Italia Conte and entry into entertainment, alternative comedy, auditioning for and losing out on the role of Daphne in Frasier, sketches vs sitcoms, working with Rik and Ade, Lily Linekar's life outside of the Bureau, studio recordings, helpful repeat fees, having "A wazzo pair of jugs" quoted at her, Bottom's enduring popularity and starring in The Bill (and hearing the "vomiting blood" line!). The conversation took place over Zoom so please forgive the occasional connection drop out. The book "Talking Bottom: A guide to the cult sitcom" can be found to order at: https://unbound.com/books/bottom/
