According to the National Retail Federation, a record 183 million people are expected to shop in-store and online between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday this year. Despite the convenience and ease of online shopping, about two-thirds of Black Friday shoppers surveyed said they plan to shop in stores on Friday. At least six Democratic members of Congress from Connecticut have said they were targeted with bomb threats to their homes, including Sen. Chris Murphy and all five House members—Reps. Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, John Larson, Jahana Hayes, and Rosa DeLauro. Police who responded said they didn't find any evidence of explosives on the lawmakers' properties. The UK Parliament gave initial support to a new bill to legalize assisted dying on Friday, paving the way for months of further debate. President Joe Biden is calling on President-elect Donald Trump to reconsider tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Earlier this week, Trump promised massive tariffs on goods from the two countries. He accused Mexico and Canada of failing to take adequate action to prevent fentanyl and illegal immigrants from flowing into the United States. To examine the issue, NTD speaks with Mike Leon, the policy and strategy director at the Free and Equal Elections Foundation and the host of the “Can We Please Talk?” podcast. Several Democratic lawmakers from Connecticut said they received bomb threats this Thanksgiving Day. Reps. Joe Courtney, Jahana Hayes, Jim Himes, and John Larson issued individual statements to say they were targeted. Law enforcement looked into each threat and said there was no evidence of any bombs. Every presidential election, campaigns flood our TVs with political ads. Back in 1952, “Ike for President” became the very first political advertisement on TV. Dwight Eisenhower's campaign may have been the first to use television like this. But it's certainly not the last. Today, more than 70 years later, political ads are everywhere. In recent weeks, both the Kamala Harris and Donald Trump campaigns have ramped up their advertising. And it's no longer just on our TV screens; it's on social media platforms, too. This hour, we're looking at political advertising during the 2024 election cycle from the messages we're seeing to how that impacts what we do at the ballot box. What kinds of messages are you seeing? GUEST: Erika Franklin Fowler: Professor of Government at Wesleyan University and co-director of the Wesleyan Media Project Note: The ad from Rep. So the election is over (or is at least supposed to be over...) and Biden has a lot of work to do to help put the country back together. Of course being teachers, we're rather focused on Mrs. DeVos's replacement. In this episode we discuss a few of the possible people who are on the radar to replace her. Sharyn shares a little history lesson on the Department of Education and Biden's education platform. Biden has pledged to choose a public education teacher to fill the Secretary of Education position. We discuss a few names of potential candidates. The top contenders are Randi Weingarten, a former high school history teacher and now president of one of the biggest labor unions, the AFL-CIO, and Lily Eskelsen Garcia (Who we have affectionately nicknamed L.E.G.). L.E.G , who actually started as the school lunch lady before becoming an elementary school teacher, is currently president of the National Education Association (NEA). Both are pro union, anti-voucher, and are big fans of public education. This is a big swing in the opposite direction as DeVos, a fan of vouchers, pushed to redirect federal monies to help fund charter and private schools. Of course a lot can change between now and January 20th, so we'll have to wait and see who ultimately gets the privilege of working to improve the education situation in the United States. There's a great deal of work to be done on so many education fronts. From helping to rebuild unsafe school buildings to working to avoid a teacher shortage, the Secretary of Education will surely have a long, uphill road to walk. Let's hope that whomever fills Mrs. DeVos's shoes is not wearing some red-soled Louboutin heels but rather a good pair of sturdy of work boots. Anything that will help to get a L.E.G. up, or a Weingarten or a Jahana Hayes or Denise Juneau or .... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/transparencyinteaching/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/transparencyinteaching/support

In this episode we hear from Jason Amos, a gifted violist, who tells us a beautifully complex story of how his own musicianship, upbringing, and living as a black gay man in America has shaped his perception of what it means to engage in a democracy. Jason and Mara discuss how the act of making music in collaboration with others can be deeply reflective of what it feels like to engage in deliberative democracy. They muse over whether Barack Obama is a better viola player than Jason, and bond over their shared love of Mara’s Congressional Representative in Connecticut, Jahana Hayes, and Jason’s in Massachusetts, Ayanna Pressley. Jason talks about how, despite growing up in a middle-class black neighborhood, he still felt the sting of racism as a child, being constantly on alert for how his presence made white community members feel. Jason opens up about the existential dread he feels every time he is pulled over by the police, and the generational trauma his family experiences today as a result of police brutality. Jason expresses worry that too many people are voting out of fear, willful ignorance, and greed. As for himself, he ultimately sees his vote as an act of great hope, and looks to cast ballots for those he feels will deliver more just and equitable outcomes for American democracy. With Jason’s permission, and in solidarity with and recognition of the protests happening all around the world in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and far too many others, there are 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence before the interview with Jason begins. This is the amount of time it took to end George Floyd’s life. Mara encourages you to sit in this silence, notice what you feel, sit with any discomfort, and breath deeply into it before journeying into Jason’s story.

When Americans awoke the morning after the midterm elections last November, they found the halls of Congress littered by the detritus of broken taboos and traditions. In the most multicultural, multiracial democratic experiment in the country's history, the newly elected freshman class smashed stereotypes by including more women, people of color, young people or LGBTQ lawmakers than ever before.  This class of Democratic freshmen jumped in head first, shattering routines on the Hill and social media. But getting down to legislating was trickier as their first weeks were marred by the longest shutdown in U.S. history; between moving into their offices and finding the bathrooms, they had to endure a crash course in the roughhouse politics of partisan gridlock.  Now five of these outspoken "Freshmen Furies," as they've become known, are joining the August 25 Conversations On the Green to discuss their history making experiences. The five Democrats -  New York's Antonio Delgado, Iowa's Abby Finkenauer, Connecticut's Jahana Hayes, Florida's Donna Shalala, and Michigan's Elissa Slotkin - will talk about what they expected and what they found, the jubilation of their election and the frustrations of the job, what they've accomplished and what's next on their agenda to move the country forward.    The first person of color to be elected to Congress from upstate New York, Antonio Delgado is a Rhodes Scholar, a graduate of Harvard Law School and a former Los Angeles-based rapper known as AD The Voice. A rock star among the freshman, his magnetic personality catapulted him to triumph over six other candidates in the Democratic primary of his overwhelmingly white swing district before defeating the favored Republican incumbent John Faso in the November general election.    Abby Finkenauer, who was 29-years-old when elected, is the second youngest person - behind New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - to ever serve in Congress and along with Cindy Axne the first women to represent Iowa in the House. The daughter of a welder and a school employee, she won a seat in the state House when she was 25 and defeated two opponents in the 2018 Democratic primary before retiring incumbent Republican Representative Rod Blum in the general election.    The first African American woman to represent Connecticut in the House, Jahana Hayes seemed destined to follow a familial pattern when, like her mother and grandmother, she became pregnant as a 17-year-old and dropped out. But she returned to school and, while working, earned college and teaching degrees before being named 2016 National Teacher of Year. She ran on her dedication to education and her trials growing up in the Waterbury projects, which she said gave her special insight into how policy affects people. "I know what it's like to go to bed to gunshots outside," she said at a candidate forum. "I know what it's like to wake up in the morning to a dead body in the hallway."   A standout in the 2019 class of youthful Democratic freshmen, Florida's Donna Shalala is an academic and Washington veteran who served for eight years as President Bill Clinton's Secretary of Health and Human Services, the longest tenure of any of the department's leaders. The former head of the Children's Defense Fund, she was president of the Clinton Foundation from 2015 to 2017 and headed the University of Miami for 14 years. Previously she was the President of Hunter College and chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and  served as Trustee Professor of Political Science and Health Policy at the University of Miami.    A former CIA analyst and senior staffer for the Director of National Intelligence, Elissa Slotkin said she was spurred to challenge two-term Republican incumbent Mike Bishop when she saw him smile at a White House celebration after he and the Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. A native New Yorker, she grew up in Holly, halfway between Flint and Detroit, and graduated from Cornell University before becoming a community organizer. She won the general election with a bare majority of the vote, 50.6 percent, becoming the first Democrat to represent the district since 2001.  Moderated by Jane Whitney, former NBC News correspondent & talk show host. Audience members are encouraged to participate in the interactive town-hall style format. U.S. Representative Jahanna Hayes (D-5th District) issued a press release Sunday accusing the news media of “clickbait journalism” in response to two recent stories she claims made “reckless assumptions” about her comments. President Trump has labeled the press the enemy of the people. At a time when trust in the media is low and anxiety over misinformation high, was there a better way to address this issue? Also this hour: Connecticut’s public health commissioner decided Tuesday not to release updated school-by-school vaccine data that would show parents whether their child’s school has reached herd immunity -- or not. Tuesday night was a good night for progressive Democrats, John Nichols argues—and Democratic control of the House will bring an epic change to Washington politics—starting with a return to Constitutional principles and an insistence that the president is subject to the rule of law. Also: women won unprecedented victories in the midterms.  Joan Walsh analyzes the feminist insurgency that will bring almost a hundred women to the House of Representatives in January—including the first two Muslim women (Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib and Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar); the first Native American women (New Mexico’s Deb Haaland and Kansas’s Sharice Davids), Texas’s first two Latina congresswomen (Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia); plus three young black women (Massachusetts’s Ayanna Pressley, Connecticut’s Jahana Hayes, and Illinois’s Lauren Underwood). About last night: the results of Tuesday's primaries are being called a groundbreaking night for women and diversity, but will they result in substantive policy output? Christine Hallquist became the first transgender woman to win the gubernatorial race in Vermont; in Minnesota, Ilhan Omaris is poised to be one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress; Jahana Hayes won the Democratic primary for Connecticut's Fifth Congressional District. Will the "Blue Wave" make some headway, or will the tides turn? The TeleSur English Facebook page was republished on the social media website this morning after it was taken down Monday evening without any substantive explanation. Supporters and media outlets such as Sputnik News and this program specifically expressed solidarity with TeleSur after the unexplained and brief removal. How does Facebook choose whom they censor, and is there a lack of transparency?A new grand jury report provides disturbing details of sexual abuse by Pennsylvania Catholic priests of over 1,000 children. The claims date back to 1947 and involve over 300 priests and six dioceses. Many of the priests still serve in churches. The real number of victims could be higher in the thousands. The deeper we dig, the worse things become, and this is why the investigation should have never been left up to the Church to manage in the first place. We'll talk to a survivor about solutions.A GoFundMe page for fired FBI agent Peter Strzok raises $325,000 in one day. How is it that an agency that worked to undermine democracy in America with its COINTELPRO program has now become so beloved by the left? The rise of Donald Trump should be no surprise to anyone watching history. We'll also analyze the parallels between the rise of the ultra-right in the 1930s and today. The first factor: major economic depression and social dislocation undermined people's confidence in democracy and led them to look for alternatives. Today, the overall US economy has been performing well, but levels of inequality continue to rise. The second factor was fear of communism, which led many leading intellectuals to embrace fascism as a bulwark against Bolshevism and as the lesser of two evils. Few people worry about the communist threat today, yet fear of communism has been replaced by fear of globalists and elite technocrats who supposedly seek to undermine and control the lives of ordinary Americans. The third factor was the rise of Nazi Germany as an economic and military powerhouse, today reflected most clearly in fears over the rise of China.
