Few genres of game have been through the wringer of public opinion quite so much as the humble Japanese RPG, or JRPG, if you prefer. It wasn't that long ago when a game could expect to lose a fair chunk of Metacritic score if it featured turn-based combat or - horror of horrors - had an anime aesthetic.

We're joined by Aidan Moher to discuss his upcoming book on Suikoden and Suikoden II and listen to some of Aidan's thoughts on Suikoden I&II HD Remaster. In finer detail, that includes: accepting Suikoden pronunciations, measuring Suikoden's place in RPG history, wondering if RPG sequels have a place in today's game space, exiting battles in five seconds, filling a world with life and activity, totaling the cost of violence, interpreting Suikoden differently as adults, comfortably adjusting to sprite changes, making questionable decisions about what to remaster and what to leave behind, failing a background check, experiencing existential dread in a remastered Pizza Hut, smoothing out some legends of localization, and remaining true to piss. Did Square Enix become another victim of "go woke, get broke?" The beleaguered Japanese RPG publisher took another massive hit to their stock this quarter, even after ditching platform exclusivity. Maybe gamers are withholding their wallets after debacles like censorship in Final Fantasy VII Remake and the Dragon Quest III Remake, or Forspoken... like ALL of it? Square Enix's focus on "AAA Western-style games" and "wokeness" is alienating their core gaming audience and causing them to "bleed money" for years. The company's decision to censor characters from the 30-year-old Dragon Quest series signals to gamers that the game will be "edited and woke". Square Enix's stock plummeted 10% on November 11, 2024, losing $350 million in market value due to declining operating profit and premium game sales. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy (2020-2023) exemplifies Square Enix's misguided focus on Western-style games over their traditional Japanese RPG roots. Square Enix's Q3 2024 financial report revealed a 27% year-on-year operating profit decline, prompting investors to sell off stock. The company's decision to sell off Crystal Dynamics and shut down the Tomb Raider and Marvel divisions is seen as a huge blow and sign of decline. Square Enix is facing a significant decline due to financial struggles, alienation of gamers, and a misguided shift in content strategy, leading to a loss of investor confidence and market value. 00:00 Square Enix's decline continues as it alienates gamers, struggles financially, and attempts to pivot too late after years of missteps. 01:15 Square Enix's stock is crashing due to declining AAA studios and a shift towards indie games, leading to a reassessment of their content strategy. 03:36 Square Enix's stock plummeted over 10% after a Q3 report showed a 27% drop in operating profit, raising concerns about its reliance on remakes and neglect of gameplay and storytelling. 06:15 Square Enix's stock dropped 10% amid mixed financial results and declining game sales, losing $350 million in market cap since November. 08:14 Square Enix's stock is crashing as investor confidence wanes over poor Final Fantasy 16 sales and a shift towards Western AAA games. 10:08 Square Enix's focus on wokeness and neglect of gamer preferences is causing a decline in sales and alienating American audiences, while indie games thrive by meeting actual demands. 14:21 Square Enix must focus on releasing more high-quality, engaging games without excessive budgets or lengthy development times to avoid business decline. 15:59 Join Clownfish Minus for exclusive content, discounts, and community engagement.

This week on Yes But Why, I chat with Fiona Howat. Fiona Howat is a podcaster who loves improv, storytelling and roleplaying games. As well as doing as much improv as possible (both online and in person), she runs two RPG-related podcasts, 'What I am Rolling?': a twice-monthly RPG one-shot podcast, and 'The DM's Bookclub': where each week the hosts take a topic from Dungeons and Dragons and discuss how they might include it in their roleplaying campaigns! Fiona and I met in a workshop led by the amazing Katy Schutte and had had a little creative interaction before we met via zoom to create this podcast episode together. We hit it off and had a great old time getting to know each other for about an hour before we started the official episode. Safe to say, we are both excitedly chatting throughout so enjoy the enthusiasm! In our conversation, Fiona told me of her love for world building. When she was a child, she derived creative inspiration from Tomb Raider and Japanese RPGs. She loved to explore the worlds she was presented with and create her own stories within it. Later, her storytelling itch was scratched with communities that love Doctor Who and Harry Potter. (Plus, she got to play Quidditch and that was really fun.) After college, Fiona's effort to make new friends was to play sports – dodgeball, basketball, rugby, all sorts of roughhousing fun. A sports friend suggested she do DND. A DND friend suggested she do podcasting. And a podcast guest suggested she take an improv class. So the lesson here is get out there and have fun. Fiona has so many interests and she just gets involved. It's truly admirable. Fiona Howat was such a fun guest. The Axe of the Blood God charity stream is over, and somehow Kat, Nadia, and Eric came out the other side with their limbs and sanity intact. They also came out with $10,000+ raised for Trans Lifeline! That's worth a limb or three. This week's show has a brief post-mortem of the charity stream before the gang gets down to business: An informed conversation about the Gundam series' endless supply of inspiration for RPGs. What do RPGs, particularly Japanese RPGs owe to the classic anime? In short, just about everything—and not simply cool mech suits. Also in this episode: Nadia finished Omori and is left with feelings of warmth and cheeriness The new Genesis Mini is gonna rule!...if you live in Japan No, Nadia didn't drown a kid. He just got a little wet In the Post Show Summer of Gundam proceeds apace in this week's post show. The crew talks about the coolest Gundam models across the years, from the most battle-effective to the most edgelord-adjacent. (Hint: This is where Gundam Wing comes in.) Nadia's opinion is basically "robot smash other robot good, he he he." This is recorded live and available to our Stars of Destiny Patrons!

On the 1st Friday, of June, the Grinders are back and rowdier than ever! The Grinders are so wound up that even the chatters get help getting wild. Why is there so much energy in today's episode? Is it Republicans, Democrats, gun violence, police, mental health, or maybe all of them combined?! The 2nd Amendment is a big part of this episode. The Grinders are pro-gun but agree that not everyone is fit to own one. What is causing the spike in gun violence? Why is the United States ranked so high in gun violence? What can be done to end the mass shootings? Well America ever start taking mental health issues seriously? What role do the police play? Are the police doing more harm than good? Only 3 Stinkos are in this energized episode. Although there aren't many, they are bad enough to cause concern. Of course, guns and cops are two of the topics but the Ohio GOP is not to be outdone. They are turning Ohio into the next Texas or Florida. They want human rights and freedoms in their control.  By the 4th paragraph, it sounds like the whole episode is negative. So it's time to focus on the happier parts of the show. Although Frank wants to wait until they release the second part of the forth season of Stranger Things. He won't say much but he gives it high recommendations.  Back to talking about the 5-0. JK! Today's news features a lot of release dates and the retirement of heavy hitter in Japanese RPGs. Shinji Hashimoto, the Brand Manager of the legendary Final Fantasy series, has retired of Squenix.  Well over 6 hundred ninety episodes and still going strong. The seven hundredth episode is just around the corner. We have no plans of slacking off between now and then. We won't be slowing down either! And on the 7th day, God rested...       and Frank retired.             These colors don't run (into schools with active shooters).

We have a lot to say about it, so we dedicate over an hour to talking about Guerrilla's new open-world action-RPG in spoiler-free terms. But of course, we can't ignore the news. Fresh Project Spartacus rumors suggest a three-tiered subscription that will include hundreds of digital games, classic access, and more. Yet, the upcoming day-and-date release of Shadow Warrior 3 on PlayStation Now seems to conflict with potential timing. What gives? After that, we get into rumors about Call of Duty's new release schedule, the unexpected success of the Uncharted film, Electronic Arts' daring move away from the FIFA brand, Street Fighter 6's underwhelming reveal, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Were David Jaffe's recent comments truly unsavory, or just taken out of context? Why doesn't the games press care more about Japanese RPGs?
