This conversation with Pete Stone is the most comprehensive, provocative and stimulating exposition of this topic you're likely to hear. Pete has the passion of a true expert and this half hour interview with Michael Banks of PeopleSmart SAS is jam packed with wise and progressive ideas! Pete's passion is fuelled by his conviction that D&I has the potential to help humanity be more open and less judgmental. This includes being able to resolve conflicts more easily. Along the way he touches on why diversity policies in corporations are built on ‘discrimination' and too reliant on ‘countable diversity', the role of women in business, innovation, and the need to define what is Inclusion before deciding policy. He explains his 5 Pillars model which includes ensuring a balance between being unique and oneself and being inclusive. Pete Stone is crystal clear that D&I is not just the concern of HR but everyone in the organization. It is a business imperative that should be everyone's business. When a CEO has this realization it can change everything! Curious? Please enjoy and we'd love for you to respond back to us even if you disagree with some of the content. Bio Pete has French and British nationalities. He worked in education and training for 15 years, and in particular at Neoma. Business School in Rouen. He continued his career in HR and Recruitment Consulting where he was Marketing & Operations Director for Hudson France, whose diversity policy he designed and implemented. What a goldmine of information Pa Sinyan was able to convey in this conversation with Michael Banks. Pa gives us an exciting look at how the Gallup organization 1. Fixes Broken Workplaces 2. Uses the Clifton Strengths Finder to help people discover what makes them unique (there is only a 1/30 million chance of finding another ‘you') 3. Uses ‘soft metrics' to get to reality. Did you know that Gallup tracks ‘wellbeing' and surprisingly shows that the world's population has seen an alarming increase in anger and unhappiness over the past twenty years - a trend that was showing well before the advent of Covid? Pa tells the intriguing story of Tunisia and Egypt by way of demonstrating this downhill slide and goes into the reasons for why this has been happening. By focusing on existing strengths Gallup provides data that indicate what can be done to solve these negative feelings and behaviors. It provides business leaders with the data backed business case for positive culture change and workforce engagement. Pa describes the pillars of positive culture change. These include leadership endorsement, effective internal communication and accountability. He also talks about what does not work about culture change. For example, did you know that emails do NOT work in this context. Pa ends this rich conversation with a final and wise message of positivity and hope for the future. Bio Pa Sinyan is Managing Partner with Gallup and leads Gallup's teams across EMEA. In his role, he supports leading companies to drive organizational and cultural change. He has 13 years experience working with leadership teams on organizational and C-Suite challenges. Pa leverages Gallup's cutting-edge data insights in the science of leadership, behavioural economics, and decision-making to support leaders. As a trusted advisor, he partners with leaders to help the unearth organic growth – more engaged employees, customers and suppliers. Pa has an MSc and a BSc in International Economics and Finance from Universiteit van Tilburg in The Netherlands. Born and raised in The Gambia, Pa has lived in Germany, The Netherlands and Tunisia. Pa speaks English, German and Wolof.
Michael Banks, 42, of Tampa, Florida, unleashed a violent rampage, leaving one woman dead and injuring his mother and 17-year-old daughter. Authorities revealed that the horrifying incident stemmed from Banks' disturbing attempt to pursue a romantic relationship with his own daughter. On Wednesday, chaos erupted at the Banks family home as Michael Banks fatally shot his mother's friend, 52-year-old Josephine Muentes, and wounded both his mother and teenage daughter. The violence escalated when police responded to reports of gunfire, with Banks opening fire on the officers. The unsettling motive behind Banks' rampage became apparent through a pre-trial detention motion filed by prosecutors. The document revealed that Banks turned to violence upon learning that his family intended to kick him out of the house due to his inappropriate pursuit of a romantic relationship with his own daughter. According to the police report, Banks' daughter recounted the harrowing moments during the attack. She was in the shower when the gunshots rang out, and in a desperate attempt to escape, she tried to hold the bathroom door closed. However, Banks fired through the door, injuring her in the leg. Banks admitted to authorities that he had written a letter to his daughter, urging her to be in a relationship with him. Feeling betrayed and upset after overhearing discussions about eviction, he loaded his muzzle-loading gun, a process that involved measuring gunpowder, pressing projectiles, and seating percussion caps. Subsequently, he fatally shot Muentes and his own mother grazed by a bullet, and managed to escape the house with the daughter, both seeking help from law enforcement. When questioned, Banks confirmed his disturbing letter and faces charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm. His prior criminal history includes a conviction for aggravated battery in 2007. Banks is currently held without bond, awaiting a pre-trial detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday. After decades of working successfully with organizational leaders to transform both themselves and their companies, Suzie Lewis (Managing Director at Transform for Value | Podcast host "Let's talk Transformation" | Executive coach | Keynote speaker) sits down with our host, Michael Banks, to share her wisdom around how leaders can create the right conditions to generate real trust both virtually and in person. Suzie is eloquent, clear, and fluent as she moves us seamlessly from key concepts to practical and behavioral advice. In particular, she discusses certain elements that lead to a trusting environment. The progression from Me —> We —> Us is not a project but a mindset, and requires us to develop not only critical systems lenses but also developmental practices. Understanding self-leadership and our inner system before looking at how we interact and impact the external system. Psychological safety. This is not about being nice… it is not about the absence of threat or challenge, but about the presence of connection. Emotional awareness is particularly important in the digital environment. Culture is so important and multilayered: personal identity / national culture / organizational culture and national culture Inclusion: in a digital environment we need to be even more intentionally inclusive than we are normally. Suzie explains how to develop trust through daily ‘developmental practices', describes being ‘intentionally inclusive' in behavioral terms, and ‘being human' as this is where trust will be built. If you would like to hear more of the detail behind these ideas please listen in as Suze and Michael dive in! Biography Founder and Managing Director of Transform for Value, Suzie is a global business leader and executive coach with extensive experience in driving international transformation projects, and in preparing business leaders and employees for change. Diversity and inclusion is an integral part of everything Suzie does, and indeed the basis of her quest: to help organizations and leaders understand the human side of business and create more inclusive leadership and more collaborative cultures. During 20 years in the aeronautical industry, she has led both flagship projects and teams large and small encompassing leadership, coaching and culture change; digital transformation and innovation; strategy, governance and deployment; HR, recruitment and assessment; diversity and inclusion; talent management; lean and Agile methodologies; change management and operational deployment. Suzie lives in Toulouse, France
It was our pleasure recently to welcome Charlotte Boujassy, Head of Global Talent Development at Morphosys, to our PeopleSmart's ‘Leadership Luminaries' podcast series with host Michael Banks. Charlotte speaks with clarity and authority from ‘the trenches' about the nuts and bolts of connecting strategy with operations. She laments that In the HR and L&D world, this connection is often not made which in turn harms the employee experience. Highlights of this interview include the importance of providing employees with enjoyable development experiences in which they can have fun! They might learn some new content but primarily they should feel good about the company's offerings. In Charlotte's opinion, the oft-used word Agility is really about getting things done fast! And in her role, she shares in fascinating detail how she is able to build positive relationships with internal stakeholders such as Procurement, Corporate Communications, and Accounts Payable to catalyze speedy results. L&D and HR have an impact on the employee experience from onboarding to off boarding and Charlotte is particularly keen on realizing the often neglected benefits of offboarding. People can leave and come back and this generous approach generates goodwill in the wider business community. Biography Charlotte Boujassy – Associate Director Global Talent Development at MorphoSys Charlotte Boujassy is a passionate people development professional who has 10+ years of experience in aeronautical, semiconductor, and pharmaceutical industries in France and Germany. She has run numerous training and leadership programmes, including a successful European Top Talent Programme she designed and rolled out during the COVID-19 pandemic for Daiichi Sankyo (a Japanese cardiovascular and oncology pharmaceutical company). She is currently in charge of Global Talent Development for Morphosys, a biotech specialized in hemato-oncology. She is a continuous learner, who is part, of several Learning & Development professionals' networks. She likes reading and listening to podcasts about history, psychology, and of course, people development. Can we still be human in the digital age? Dr Thomas Juli says we can. According to Dr Thomas Juli, 'traditional business has reached a dead end' and, from his latest book 'The Spirit of Human Business', he describes how we can move to a transformed business model that focuses on 'generating value for and by people'. Dr Thomas dares us to move away from looking at ‘human resources' (things) to viewing people as adaptive and flexible organisms. We are not machines and cannot be programmed. There is a path from ‘me' to ‘we' that includes trusting ourselves first so we can trust others to self-organize and be autonomous beyond the structures and processes that can straitjacket human beings. One vital element in this transformational process is to ask what Dr Juli calls ‘wicked questions'. He calls for projects that incubate and accelerate solutions to the most difficult problems. Starting small we should ask the question “How do I want to live?” versus “What will the future look like?” The metamorphosis from larvae into a butterfly can be painful and one must be willing to “surrender to complete transformation”. Please join our host, Michael Banks, and our guest, Dr Thomas Juli, and enjoy this provocative and in depth conversation on the exciting possibilities of a more evolved way to do business. Biography Dr. Juli is a Human Business Architect , co-creator and coach for Agile projects and business transformation with more than 25 years of experience in various industries and companies. He is the founder, business leader and trustee of Motivate2B, a collective for leaders, teams and entire organizations with the common goal of making business and their companies more human and sustainable. His motivation and ultimate goal is to help Human business become the new global normal by 2030. In 2020 he joined Allianz as an executive to help its transformation into an Agile organization and onwards into a Human Business. He is a regular speaker at conferences worldwide such as the NASA Project Management Challenge, FQ Lounge at the World Economic Forum, Global Congress of the Project Management Institute, and the Corporate Social Responsibility Forum Germany. He is the author of three books, The Spirit of Human Business being his latest. Thomas holds a doctorate with distinction in International Studies from the University of Miami, USA, and an M.A. in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis, USA, where he was a student of Nobel laureate Douglass C. North. In his free time, he loves all kinds of outdoor activities such as running, hiking and free climbing, skiing and snowboarding. He holds a 2 nd Dan (black belt) in Taekwondo, is practicing Vinyasa Yoga and dancing Tango Argentino.
Design Thinking has been helping companies overcome obstacles, improve customer service and get a competitive advantage by focusing on creativity and collaboration. As we navigate through rapid and big changes, the emerging role of the Design Leader is a necessity in bringing together unique perspectives from across the globe to create a powerful collective brain that leads to optimal solutions. Join our host, Michael Banks and Juliana Proserpio, co-Founder and Chief Design Officer of ECHOS (a global innovation lab, as they delve into the emerging role of Design Thinking in creating a desired vision of the future that includes all stakeholders. It is a tool to navigate change and requires 1) Empathy, 2) Creativity and 2) Imagination. A successful Design Leader knows how to facilitate the process of “changing existing conditions into preferred ones”. Design Leaders recognise the importance of diversity and know how to manage healthy and necessary conflict by creating psychological safety. A diverse team spanning the globe and using technology to work together online is able to realize the ‘desired' future far more effectively than having the team working in person in a more localised and homogenised stakeholder group.. Juliana describes the ‘Four Degrees of Naturality' and why humanity is now faced with the challenge of the fourth degree in which machines create the future. Design thinking is transitioning into ‘generative design' where humans provide the input and machines produce the output. By 2030 design will be more and more about “layers upon layers of abstraction” and in this context the role of Design Leaders will become increasingly central to the future of organisations and society as a whole as Human Centered Design evolves into Life Centered Design. If you are business leader and you think design thinking will be important in your organisation's future, you should listen to this episode to understand how the role of a Design Leader will serve both your company and your customers, so that no matter what kind of problems come your way next, you'll be prepared to solve them. Biography Juliana Proserpio is the co-founder and Chief Design Officer of ECHOS, a global innovation lab and over the last 11 years, Juliana has worked to develop an innovation ecosystem in APAC & Latin America to foster the power of design for desirable futures. Today we will be hearing from Juliana about the emerging world of design leadership and how it is rapidly becoming vital to the future success of companies and, indeed, society as a whole Juliana was responsible for creating the first Google News Initiative Design Accelerator in 2019 in the Asia Pacific, and later designed and implemented the GNI Startup Labs in Brazil, and in India. She also led innovation projects with Worksafe in Australia (helping them design their future vision for 2048) and is currently leading a Design Accelerator for the House and Property Department (NSW Government). As an educator, the ECHOS School of Design thinking has already helped to shape 40.000 + innovators, and is currently in the vanguard of design education with a global program on design leadership, bringing the best designers and innovators into the same room. As a thought leader, Juliana is a columnist at the MIT Sloan Management Review, as well as a columnist for Epoca Negocios (business magazine in Brazil). As a speaker, Juliana has participated in events such as the Global Innovation Summit in San Jose - California, TEDxMaua in São Paulo, and the Sydney Design Festival. Juliana is also a content producer in her field of design and innovation, writing e-books such as "The Power of Design", "The role of innovation during a pandemic", The Design Thinking toolkit, and pioneering a podcast called Desired.
We spend a lot of time working, in fact the average full-time employee works around 37 hours every week. We dedicate most of our awake time and energy to work. So why do only 27% of people feel their employer really cares about their overall wellbeing? What are employees doing wrong and how can we fix it? Michael Banks' conversation with Catherine Llewellyn, Master Humanistic Psychologist, Organizational Transformation Strategist and Type ‘A' Wrangler, provides an expanded view of organizational wellbeing and vitality. Going beyond the more formulaic and programmatic approach to this important, and highly relevant topic, she suggests that well-being is more of a ‘state' than a set of ‘one size fits all' best practices. Catherine explains how she applies to organizations the diagnostic model she co-designed with Professor Paul Tosey of Surrey University. It's called the Seven Levels and is based upon the Hindu and Buddhist system of seven chakras or energy centers. In this way she can ‘prescribe' a ‘well being and vitality journey' that is tailored to each unique organization. In a time of almost universal fear and stress around viruses and wars a state of wellbeing for all is more desirable than ever. Please join us and be inspired and encouraged by listening to Catherine Llewellyn's experience and wisdom about how leaders can raise the level of wellness in their organizations by starting with themselves! Bio Catherine is: a Self-Mastery Catalyst | Master Humanistic Psychologist | Type 'A' Wrangler | Writer | Podcaster | Free Thinker | Intuitive Healer | Conscious Dancer | Executive Mentor | Organizational Transformation Strategist | Cat lover. As a Master Humanistic Psychologist, Catherine helps successful entrepreneurs, execs and business owners launch themselves to the Next Level - for their businesses and for themselves personally. Her lifelong passion for human evolution and transformation began at age six, encouraged by her bohemian upbringing and a variety of catalytic encounters with radical thought leaders. For over five decades Catherine has investigated and incorporated the humanistic philosophical approach, along with the arts of physical embodiment, energy healing and strategic creativity. She has a profound lived familiarity with what it is to be a free-thinker, and a non-conformist. For many years Catherine worked on large-scale corporate leadership and transformation programs, aligning fiscal success with values driven leadership and culture. Her clients were top business leaders whose transformations benefited thousands of people. Nowadays Catherine works directly and privately with clients, hosts a weekly podcast Truth & Transcendence, organizes local conscious gatherings for free thinkers, and periodically releases insightful and thought-provoking eBooks published on Amazon.

Of course HR should have a seat at the top table. Right? But what does HR need to do to get there? Lately, HR has become a very hot topic. And for very good reasons as we shift towards a more people centric approach in this new world. Some research shows that executive leadership wants and needs an HR business partner who adds value to the organisation and the bottom line. The question is: How can HR deliver that? Join our host, Michael Banks, and our guest, an HR expert, Deborah Wilkes FCIPD, as she pulls back the curtain on how HR can secure an equal place at the table. This is a 'must listen' for anyone who wants to see HR stand up to business leaders and be seen as a business leader in their own right. Deborah Wilkes FCIPD eloquently and authoritatively shares the reasons HR historically has never been on the same page as business leaders and how practitioners can leverage the increased credibility and visibility they have gained over the past two years to challenge business leaders by speaking ‘the language of business', being more assertive, being ‘Politically Intelligent' and having the courage to push back and be part of the strategy conversation from the beginning versus being invited to the party down the line as mere implementers. Deborah says ‘HR Maturity' is required so that the CHRO can sit down with the CEO and have a ‘balanced conversation'. And at the end of this interview she shortlists the main obstacles in the way of HR ‘rising up' to build a shared agenda with the business, and the major solutions to these obstacles. This brief overview does not fully do justice to this rich and informative conversation. If you are interested in knowing more about 'HR MATURITY' please join us to find out more. Listen in as Dr. Michele interviews fellow Yin Yogi Michael Banks, and hear two yin yogis discuss why yin yoga is our favorite. Both Michael and Dr. Michele have been trained as RYT 200 yoga teachers with extensive training in Yin Yoga Levels I and II as well as Restorative Yoga Levels I and II. Michael believes every body is a yoga body, and if you can breathe, you can practice yoga! His focus is more health-based than performance-based, with an emphasis on alignment and anatomy. He uses props to assist with alignment and to help individuals better understand their own bodies. His goal is to create a space where individuals, regardless of mobility or physical challenges, can grow and heal from the inside out. Michael received his teacher training at the TheraYoga Studio in Montrose, CA, with Samantha (Sam) Joseph-Akers and Addie de Hilster. The training was based on Modern Hatha Yoga, which encompasses the physical asana practice and is the umbrella term for most styles of yoga practiced in the West. Sam and Addie developed the TheraYoga Method, whose lineage descends from the practice of T. Krishnamachary, who could be considered the father of modern yoga. Krishnamachary also practiced Ayurvedic medicine and combined this science with yoga in his therapeutic approach. Sam was taught by Kelly Wood, who was taught by Gurmukh Kalsa, who was in the direct lineage with Yogi Bhajan, Judith Lasater, Leeann Carey, Doug Keller and George Haas. Addie was taught by Bernie Clark, Leeann Carey, Paul Grilley (who was key in the development of Yin Yoga) and Sarah Powers, who coined the name “Yin”. Show Notes: 1. Find out how both Michael and Dr. Michele found yoga and, more specifically, yin yoga in their 40's or later after establishing their careers in fields outside of the yoga community. 2. Yoga is for anybody at any age! 3. Could yoga be the anti-aging secret? 4. Props are amazing! Even the wall is a great prop to use in yin yoga and restorative yoga. 5. The difference between yin yoga and restorative yoga. 6. What is the yin "high"? 7. For athletes and strengthening, yin yoga is the way to go. For healing from injuries and trauma (including emotional trauma), restorative yoga is the way to go. 8. What prompted you to create Yin Zone? Michael can be found online at www.yinzone.com, by phone at 708-218-7396, and by email at Michael@yinzone.com. Michael is currently accepting new private yoga clients. Less about the details but more about the details. Phil claims he’s a better babysitter than Mary Poppins. Amanda played Mary Poppins in multiple dance recitals. Julie Andrews is the best. Bert has so many jobs around town. Short nod to the book characters. Phil’s NYC street show experience plus Nick and Winston from New Girl. The mother is a trailblazing feminist. Did he change his name to work at a bank of did he work there because of his name. William and Madeline starred as Jane and Michael Banks and crushed it. Wind blows all of the nannies down the street. Almost too many fun facts about this movie. Stephen Colbert interview with Dame Julie Andrews. Never give references and just hire yourself. George Costanza hires himself and GOB’s references. This magic bag is the best. Spoonful of sugar - mix fun with something boring. Game - Song Lyric Questions. The original Mambo Number 5 (Lou Bega). Amanda and Phil are both Spelling Bee champions. Magic tape measure to size people up. It’s better than a finger in your eye. Phil’s tip jar advice. New crazy outfits and the penguin waiters. Amanda’s Poppins Penguins fridge magnet. Contesting Mary’s horse race win. When you don’t have anything to say, just say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Different colors of medicine. Mrs Banks throwing eggs at the Prime Minister. Stupid smart jokes. Phil and Amanda love a good graph and chart. Cash money. They’re not evil, they’re just responsible. Not enough dancing and no illustrations. Article about investing and saving. Step in time. I never explain anything. Rude firing. Flying good and bad kites. Poppins out. Work life balance. Navckid Keyd. Bert theories. Mary Poppins in EPCOT. Almost a Disneyland Mary Poppins ride. Large Academy Awards presence. The quickest of changes. Julie Andrews was not cast for My Fair Lady. Saving Mr Banks. Mary Poppins Returns. Long gap between original and sequel. I just value a good investment plan okay. Not really the word backwards. Cut the toddlers. Mrs Featherbottom. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Next episode - Emil and the Detectives

Adam Grundy, Luke Ibbetson, and Blair Treacy discuss the big film news from this week, such as the newest Rogue One: A Star Wars Joint trailer, and the rumoured new suit for Superman in Justice League. The crew discuss the potential casting of Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks in the upcoming sequel 'Mary Poppins Returns'. Blair divulges the fact that he's never seen Mary Poppins, and tells a strange version of what he thinks is the plot. It's all very superkali-film-alistic, which is a joke that might be lost on one of the crew. We’re showing Rocky IV at the Prince Charles Cinema on September 7th, followed by the September FILMAGEDDON QUIZ! Tickets available on the PCC website and at the box office. Cheaper for members! We've watched a lot of strange Disney movies here on We Want The D; everything from old dads to dancing leprechauns have defuddled Vicky, Nolan and Jill over past episodes. But this week's film may take the cake. The Three Lives of Thomasina stars a cult television actor and producer, Jane and Michael Banks from Mary Poppins along with a host of other towheaded children, and a blandly beautiful blonde - almost all of whom are (badly) attempting Scottish accents. Oh yeah, and a cat that vanishes for large chunks of time, even though the movie is named after AND about her. That may not sound so strange to you yet, Dear Listeners, but we haven't even gotten to the cat afterlife, gypsy circus, or number of instances of animals being "destroyed." But don't worry, no actual animals were killed in the making of this film...we think. Lots of them were drugged, though.

Theater is all about transformation, and transformation is never easy. But transforming one of the best-loved movies of all time into a stage musical? That’s a huge challenge, because the expectations are always so remarkably high. So it takes guts, creativity, and a whole lot of daring-do, all of which are on vivid display in the splendid new production of "Mary Poppins," presented by Spreckels Theater Company in Rohnert Park. Adapted, in part, from the Walt Disney film with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, "Mary Poppins," the play, is a fascinating fusion of the expected and the unexpected. Writer Julian Fellowes, the guy behind Downton Abbey, pulls off the trick by rewriting the lighthearted movie’s plot to make it a bit more faithful to the darker, scarier books by P.L. Travers, while still retaining most of the movie’s songs and several of its best moments. The magic carpet bag? It’s there, as is the smarty-pants tape measure that tells more about you than just your height. Gone, though, are the dancing penguins and the tea party on the ceiling. In their place are dancing statues and a trip to a magical shop where letters and words can be purchased like candy. The big question is, does Mary Poppins still fly? Yes she does, spectacularly. And as played by the delightful Heather Buck, she shows a lot more strength, edge and power than in the film, sweet when she needs to be, but tough too, and even a little bit dangerous. The unruly siblings Jane and Michael Banks are causing friction between their parents, the skittish but blustery Mr. Banks, played by Garet Waterhouse, and the strong-willed Mrs. Banks, played wonderfully by Sandy Riccardi. Right on cue, the mysterious Mary Poppins arrives with her bag of tricks and a plan to put things right with the amiable assistance of her best friend Bert, played with energy and charm by Dominic Williams. There’s a dark-humored subplot involving the terrifying Miss Andrews - a stellar Mary Gannon Graham - who shows up to battle Mary Poppins for the family’s future - and perhaps a bit of its soul. Under the direction of Gene Abravaya, who handles the shifts in tone from light to dark and back with grace and ease, the entire show is packed with wonder and rich with emotion. Give this man the Facing-a-Challenge and exceeding-all-expectations award. The effects are cleverly done, the dancing and music are eye-popping and ear pleasing, and the bittersweet ending is effectively lovely. True to form, when Mary Poppins shows up, she brings out the best in everyone she meets. Meanwhile, at 6th Street Playhouse, the Lemons-into-Lemonade Award of the month goes to director Craig Miller, who has cleverly surmounted a number of imposing challenges in creating a highly entertaining new production of the 1992 musical "Crazy for You." The Tony-winning show by Ken Ludwig is built from old standard songs by George and Ira Gershwin - "I’ve got Rhythm," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Slap that Bass" - inventing a plot about a dusty western town invaded by show-people from New York. It works, due to strong lead performances and some clever invention from Miller, whose written a new opening scene that sets things up and solves an array of issues, including the fact that Miller’s cast has far more women than men. His solution to the problem is not just clever. It makes the show funnier. With spectacular choreography by lead actor Joseph Favalora, and a winning performance by Abbey Lee as a love-struck cowgirl, "Crazy for You" is not exactly deep theater, but its funny, sweet, and driven by an infectious love of the theater. If you like musicals, especially if you love Gershwin, you should check it out. "Crazy for You" runs Thursday–Sunday through March 15 at 6th Street Playhouse. www.6thstreetplayhouse.com. "Mary Poppins" runs Friday–Sunday, through May 23 at Spreckels Performing Arts Center. www.spreckelsonline.com I’m David Templeton, Second Row Center, for KRCB.
Cool lessons learned while watching Mary Poppins with my kids. ---Transcript--- Hey everybody, this is Russell Brunson and I want to welcome you to today's episode of Marketing in Your Car. I want to talk about something kind of fun. Last weekend, my family and I had a chance to go down to St. George, Utah which was fun. We had a great time. While we were down there, there's a place called the Tuacahn Theater where they do plays every single year. This year, they had four or five different plays they were doing. While we were there, the play they were doing was Mary Poppins. I got to admit, I was kind of disappointed. I heard last year, they had Aladdin, and Princess Jasmine flying through the air and all sorts of stuff. The year before was Little Mermaid, and they flooded the stage and water came down. I was like, “What can you do cool with Mary Poppins?” I wasn't really excited to go see it outside of the fact that it was fun to go to an outdoor theater and be with my family, my kids came, and everything. We went to it and it was actually – the production was amazing but just the story of Mary Poppins, I hadn't heard that story for a long, long time since I was a kid. This one was based more off of the book so there were a lot of things that were in that that weren't in the movie. Just a couple of really cool things that popped out to me that I wanted to share with you guys, I think they relate to us. They relate to business. They relate to your personal life. They relate to whatever it is you're dealing with. The first one that was fun was when they sang the song, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” when I was a kid, the only meaning I got from that when I was a kid was if you have medicine and you put some sugar in it, it will taste better going down. As I saw the song and the play and everything like that, I realized that there's so many more meanings to that, just talking about any kind of work you do that if you can add in the element of fun, if you can add in that sugar into it, it changes it from being work to fun. It talked about how a spoonful of sugar changes toast and water to cake and juice or whatever it was. I started thinking about that. How many things in our life, if we look at it and it's miserable but we go back and add in a spoonful of sugar, how do we make that now a fun activity? I think that we've had three or four people that have come and done internships in our office. That's one thing they consistently say. I had a call with one of them the other day. I was talking to him after he left. He just said, “Your office environment is so much fun. It's fun to come to work, it's fun to be there. Just the environment, the atmosphere you've created has been a lot of fun.” I thought that was kind of cool. That's one lesson I learned from Mary Poppins. The next lesson I learned from her, this is actually more from Bert, just talking about the chimney sweeps, when he was doing the whole chim-chimney, chim-chim chiroo song, and them on top of London dancing around made me really think about you look at somebody like a chimney sweep. You're like, “Oh, he's in dirt, he's in mud all day. It's horrible.” Then for him, he's looking at it like, “I have the best view in the world. Chimney sweeps are happy as happy can be.” I just thought about that in our lives. Wherever we're at, you can look at a chimney sweep and it seems like a miserable thing but if you look at the positive parts of it, how cool and how exciting, how fun is that. I thought that was kind of cool too. Then the last big one, this one really had an impact on me in that I don't remember it from the movie. It may have been in the movie but it was part of the play, where the kids, Michael Banks and I can't remember the daughter's name. They went to the bank to go see their dad. The dad was all flustered because he didn't want them to show up. He was there with a client trying to get a loan. The client was there trying to get a loan from the bank or whatever it might be. The client, the guy who was in there, walked over to the kids and said, “Here, I'm going to give you guys sixpence. I want you to have your first money.” Michael said, “I know what that is. That's worth sixpence.” He said, “No, no.” He said, “It may be worth sixpence but the value is what you do with it.” I thought that was really cool, not just money financially but any part of our life. It may be worth this but the value is what you do with it. The value is how you help someone. What are you going to do with that money? Are you going to give it to go feed the birds? Are you going to give it to go start a charity? Are you going to give it to help your dad? We know what it's worth but its value can be completely different. I thought that was a profound thing if you think about it. Just a couple of fun things from Mary Poppins; if you guys haven't watched that movie yet, we went out and bought the movie. I'm going to watch the movie again. It was really a cool thing. Everywhere you look around in life, there's always these cool little lessons you can learn that you can relate back to your business and back into your life. I hope you enjoyed that. I'm at the office now you guys. Have a great day and we'll talk to you all tomorrow.
