Amy Brann has been studying neuroscience since she was 15.Now, as the founder of Synaptic Potential, she brings all that expertise to working with organisations to create meaningful change backed by scientific underpinnings.Named 2023 HR Most Influential Thinker, Amy is the author of three books about neuroscience, including Neuroscience For Coaches, which is on the reading lists of many of the best coach training organisations and forms the foundation for this episode: a deep dive into how to make coaching and learning really work.In conversation with The Coach's Journey Founder Robbie Swale, Amy busts myths, teaches hard-to-understand science in ways we can grasp, and tells a story of hope and optimism for what is possible if we can understand brain science and move towards our Whole Brain Potential. In particular, Amy and Robbie talk about:The pitfalls of setting high expectations with your clients and how to avoid them. The neuroscience of visualisations, and how to use them effectively to increase autonomy for your clients.Crucial areas of neuroscience for coaches to know about: neuroplasticity, mirror neurons and more. Why trust is one of the things coaches should pay more attention to and how to do that.Plus Amy coaches Robbie live on how to let his emotions help him pay attention to the right things. For more information about Amy, visit https://neuroscienceforcoaches.com/resources/, ttps://www.linkedin.com/in/amybrann/ or https://synapticpotential.com/For more information about host Robbie Swale, visit https://www.robbieswale.com/Read more about The Coach's Journey at www.thecoachsjourney.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community.THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT THAT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN:The Reticular Activating System note from Amy: ‘The reticular activating system spans an extensive portion of the brainstem. Most of the neurons comprising the midbrain reticular formation lie dorsal and lateral to the red nuclei. Complex interactions between multiple neurotransmitters modulate the action of the reticular activating system with both cholinergic and adrenergic neurotransmission having key roles. The reticular activating system's fundamental role is regulating arousal and sleep−wake transitions. The ascending reticular activating system projects to the intralaminar nuclei of the thalami, which projects diffusely to the cerebral cortex. The ascending projections of the reticular activating system enhance the attentive state of the cortex and facilitate conscious perception of sensory stimuli. Additionally, the collective role of the brainstem reticular formation is to regulate autonomic function, muscle reflexes, and tone.' B.L. Walter, A.G. Shaikh, in Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences (Second Edition), 2014 - note from Robbie: So it is part of the brain, but only a small part of it is about attention/conscious perception. Some times life is even more fascinating than fiction. Behind the mystique of "Sunset Boulvard" is a nuanced parallel story of a fading star, her unrequited love for a stunning younger man, and the gay love story it complicated. This story is not fiction, however, it was real. Dickson Hughes and Richard Stapley were two young songwriters and romantic partners in the 1950s. They found themselves caught in movie star Gloria Swanson's web when she hired them to write a musical version of “Sunset Boulevard" long before the Andrew Lloyd Webber version was even imagined.  Life imitated art when Gloria fell in love with Richard, and  Dixon and Richard found themselves trapped in a strange real life version of the classic Wilder film. Jeffrey Schwartz has brought the true story to life in the documentary Boulevard! Imagine being one of the two young songwriter/lyricists who are invited to an imposing Hollywood mansion to meet with movie legend Gloria Swanson. Greeting you in all her movie star glamour, Gloria pitches her idea for a Broadway musical based on her starring role in the brilliant movie “Sunset Boulevard”. Three months later, your musical BOULEVARD is ready for the big time. Unfortunately, that version of the musical never gets produced. But, in a delicious twist, the real-life story of the love triangle between Gloria and the two young songwriters (Dickson Hughes and Richard Stapley) ends up being a mirror image of the plot of “Sunset Boulevard”.   In Ken's thoroughly entertaining Top Docs conversation with filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz (“BOULEVARD! How much fun was it for Jeffrey to go on this creative journey about a movie classic he has seen “7,000 times”? Who were Dickson Hughes and Richard Shapley? How did their passionate but closeted relationship blossom into a professional partnership that led to Gloria's door? In what ways was Richard's acting career — and life — diminished by having to maintain a macho image that couldn't account for who he really was? And will the “real” Gloria Swanson finally step forward out of the shadow of Norma Desmond? JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, present an episode that is more fun than throwing pumpkin pies at floating inflatable skeleton! MONSTER PARTY is proud to pay tribute to a maverick director/producer/writer/actor, whose filmography includes such genre classics as THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, THE TINGLER, 13 GHOSTS, HOMICIDAL, and ROSEMARY'S BABY. We're talking about the one and only "Master of Gimmicks"... WILLIAM CASTLE!!! To us up and coming monster kids, William Castle served as our delighfully scary favorite uncle. Sporting a large cigar and armed with playful sense of gallows humor, Castle came off like a more accessible Alfred Hitchcock.  He often introduced his pictures, and thrilled movie-goers with a vast array of inventive and sometimes silly gimmicks. To make things even more tantalizing, Castle liked to brand these gimmicks with catchy names like, EMERGO, PERCEPTO, and ILLUSION-O, just to name a few. I suppose if he had made an Italian western, it would have been filmed in SPAGHETTI-O! Hahahahaha... sigh. Joining us for this creepy cavalcade of Castle comaraderie, is an EMMY AWARD winning director/producer/editor, who makes his MONSTER PARTY debut! He's the man who gave us the critically acclaimed documentary, SPINE TINGLER: THE WILLIAM CASTLE STORY, for which we'll forever be in his debt. Please welcome... JEFFREY SCHWARZ! Resources by J.P. MorelandFinding Quiet: My Story of Overcoming Anxiety and the Practices that Brought PeaceJ.P. Moreland's WebsiteQ: I'm really interested to know how a philosophy professor ends up writing a book on anxiety and depression.I approach philosophy as an attempt to learn how to live a wise and flourishing life that honors Christ. I was born with a problem with anxiety that led me to wanting to continue to develop my emotional health and spiritual health. I was born with a genetic disposition towards anxiety from my mom's side, and as a little boy I also observed her worry and be anxious a lot. So by the time I got out of high school, and was well-taught and predisposed to being an anxious person. In 2003 I had an unbelievably stressful year at university. I had panic attacks and had what I could call a nervous breakdown that lasted 7 months. I got on medications, got into good Christian therapy, and began to practice some things that I've learned from Dallas Willard. After 7 months I got better. But then it happened again for 5 months. So I devoted myself to learning about anxiety and coming up with a list of practices that would help me.Q: The other thing you do that I found really helpful is that you help address a lot of concerns that Christians might have about mental health or medication or self-compassion. Have you found that to be well-received or have you gotten pushback from that?I did get some pushback. I was actually preaching at a church and I talked about the importance of medication for those who need it, and I was not allowed to speak at the second service and was never invited back. They were pretty upset with me. The Bible itself emphasizes the importance of non-biblical knowledge. If something in psychology contradicts the Bible, then I don't accept it. But if the Bible doesn't speak about it, then I'm free to follow the evidence wherever it goes. Psychology and psychiatry have a tremendous amount to offer us in our tool bag.Q: One of the pieces that I found really helpful in the book is you continue to go back to all these practices and very practical things that have worked for you, yet leaving it open for not being totally prescriptive for people. I'm curious to hear a little about your journey with contemplative prayer and how that has helped you with anxiety. It's been life changing. I needed to learn how to attach to God. This form of prayer has opened me up to attaching and connecting and experiencing the presence of God with more intensity than I had before. It has drawn me closer to the Lord. Contemplative prayer has a lot of different ways of doing it. The bottom line for me was finding a way to sit in the same place every morning and be quiet and to learn how to focus my attention by the use of some repetitive phrase. I want to get in a position of receptivity where I'm open to being guided or connected.Q: could you say a little about the four-step solution process? It is one way of dealing with the kinds of negative self-talk that we are habituated to that tears us down and makes us afraid and depressed. It was generated by Jeffrey Schwarz. It's a way of re-training your self-talk. The first step is that you invite the Spirit to search you and help you notice when you're doing this. Step 2 is to label it (there are 10 typical thought disorders), to name it, which takes the power out of it. Step 3 is refocusing, where you turn your mind away from it, and go to something that gets you into what's called flow. Step 4 is evaluate how you did in handling it. After 2-3 months of doing this daily, those grooves that automatically trigger anxiety are replaced with triggers that automatically cause feelings of joy and peace.Q: How did your friendship with Dallas inform your writing. He was my main professor and my dissertation supervisor. Part of his influence was realizing that it is actually possible to make tremendous progress in this journey. He really lived this, and that attractiveness of his heart and life drew me in, motivated me to dive in a learn a new era of the Christian life that I had not been taught before.Q: It reads like formation work applied to mental health challenges. What was it like to crash for all those months? It was terrorizing. What I learned quickly was that my typical approach to the Christian life was not adequate to deal with it. I felt like I was letting people down.Q: Are you healed?I haven't come close to having mild anxiety in 5 or 6 years, and it's been 8 years since the breakdown. In 2015 and for the next 2 ½ years I had 8 surgeries – one was life threatening for sure. I had chemo and 2 rounds of radiation, and I went through that whole time filled with joy and peace. And that's because I was reaping what I had sown for years in these practices. They worked; they actually re-formed my character to where the natural thing for me to do was respond in a trusting manner. Cast your anxiety on the Lord and he'll care for you, and the peace of Christ which surpasses understanding will guard your hearts and minds – those are not so much promises as ideals that you strive to achieve through practices and through praying through things. After a while, those texts become effective because you have developed the habituation that makes them a part of what you've now become.Q: How important were Biblical passages for you?The first appendix in Finding Quiet is a list of verses that are solid gold. Dallas told me that as, or more important, than getting in the Word and reading it, is to commit a handful of verses to memory that are there and you love them, they just do something for you, and make those the rails on which you run your life. As I began contemplative prayer, I would begin to quietly pray through a few of those and orient myself to contemplative prayer sessions with these verses. Pick a list of 4 or 5. I would try to express them emotionally to God, rather than cognitively reciting them.Q: What would you say to someone listening who is really struggling with anxiety and maybe has some self-condemnation or shame?Remember that Peter says that there are brothers and sisters all over the world who are going through the same things and that you're not alone. This is an epidemic, so you're not unusual. If this is a hard thing to handle, why not go to a Christian therapist and get some Christian counselling; go to a psychiatrist (rather than a GP) and consider getting a little help with meds until you get over the hump. And begin sharing what you're experiencing with trusted people so that you have a place to share it to get it off your chest. And then begin some of these simple practices. Guilt and shame is not needed. I don't think Christians should ever feel guilt or shame because of Romans 8:1 that says there is no condemnation and Colossians says that what we've done, our certificate of debt, was nailed to the cross. We should feel something else, and that is godly sorrow. The difference is that shame and guilt and self-oriented and self-condemnatory and puts me down. Godly sorrow is a form of sadness that draws me toward the Lord where I can acknowledge things and agree with God. It moves me toward the Lord and creates a hunger to conform to the way he is and continue on the journey rather than beating myself up.Q: For folks who have friends and family, spouses, that are struggling with anxiety, is there a word you might have for the best way they can love each other through this? The first thing is to be present to your loved one and give them opportunities to share and talk. And without you initially trying to fix it. Just be a presence and listen, even if you've heard it every day for 20 days now. That's going to give a feeling of support. Be careful to preserve your own boundaries. You're going to need time away and you just have to communicate that with them. You have to keep yourself from going down or you're not going to be any good to anybody.Q: How was your wife? She was worried. She was just there for me and listened to me and supported me. I didn't feel any condemnation on her part.

Producer Lotti Pharriss Knowles talks about her new project “Goddess: The Fall and Rise Of Showgirls” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ that she is producing with Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz.  A pivotal interviewee already announced is “Showgirls” director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers, Elle) who has also given this project his full blessing. Director Jeffrey Schwarz stated, “It’s been a longtime dream to make the definitive documentary about a film that has fascinated and flabbergasted audiences since its release in 1995. ‘Showgirls’ is a misunderstood masterpiece and although it is a gaudy, over the top spectacle, it wrestles with issues of sex, power and the American Dream. ‘Goddess’ will dig deep into the intentions of its creators, recount the negative reaction by the press and the public and chronicle how the cult of ‘Showgirls’ has grown over the years.” We talked to Lotti about her inspiration for producing this significant documentary “Goddess: The Fall & Rise Of Showgirls” and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what she hopes to accomplish with her work, Pharriss Knowles stated, “All of my work has a similar angle to it which is to entertain my audience. I always have that in the forefront of my mind but I also always want to work in something that has some kind of social commentary or message. Kind of once people finish the ice cream cone maybe there’s a little nut at the center that they’re like ‘oh that was fun but now I’m thinking about something.’ I’ve been an activist and someone interested in social issues my whole life. I mean that was stuff my parents and I would talk about around the dinner table. So I just can’t help that I always have a little bit of that or a lot of that in any piece of work that I’m involved in or creating.” Lotti Pharriss Knowles is a writer and Emmy-nominated producer based in Los Angeles. She is the writer and producer of horror-comedy feature film “Chastity Bites” and with documentary filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz she produced “I Am Divine”, “The Fabulous Allan Carr” and HBO Documentary Films’ “Vito”. Her play “Because They Have No Words” was nominated by Los Angeles Stage Alliance’s Ovation Awards for World Premiere Play and was published by Northwestern University Press in the anthology titled “Katrina On Stage”. Lotti is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and Producers Guild of America. For More Info… LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Jeffrey Schwarz has made a lifelong study of film, starting with an early job editing the documentary The Celluloid Closet, right up to today with a new documentary about flamboyant producer Allan Carr. As a weird young gay man, he found kindred spirits in people who, like him, reveled in intensity and excess. And now as a filmmaker, he's reaching out a hand to invite others to join him.
