In this bonus episode, host Sarah Milligan welcomes Molly Collins, Executive Director of Policy and Government Affairs at Institute for Quality Education, and Jennifer Wagner, Vice President of Communications at Excel in Ed, to break down the big wins for school choice in the latest elections—both in Indiana and nationwide. They dive into how legislative support drives progress for school choice, unpack the bill-to-law process, and examine how the political landscape is shifting in favor of education options. The discussion covers generational shifts in attitudes, the role of demographics in school choice participation, and the challenges ahead for expanding access to quality education. With school choice now resonating with both parents and policymakers, Molly and Jennifer urge parents, educators and policymakers to keep pushing for educational freedom and innovation. Key Takeaways: Legislative Power: Legislative support is the secret sauce for advancing school choice and gaining traction across the political spectrum. The Power of Grassroots Advocacy: The power of personal stories and grassroots efforts can't be overstated. New Education Models: Micro-schools and other new models are gaining ground. Universal Vouchers: Growing momentum for universal vouchers that aim to give families more options, regardless of income. Generational Shifts: Younger generations are increasingly supportive of school choice and exploring alternative education options. Did you find this episode informative? Help us out! During the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government implemented a rule that prevented states from removing people from Medicaid. But following the end of the public health emergency at the end of March 2023, states began the eligibility redetermination process. Since then, more than 19 million people have lost their Medicaid or CHIP coverage. Jennifer Wagner, Director of Medicaid Eligibility and Enrollment at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, joins the podcast to talk more about what we've seen over the last year and what it could mean for future Medicaid policies. Dr. Wagner discusses how she is taking a 40-year preventative approach to her aging, the poor quality of life of a doctor, why she stepped back from that lifestyle, Liminal Collective, how she is teaching women to optimize their lives through her new project “Prosper,” performance, and more. “I used to drive home from Stanford and sit in my garage and cry before I went in to take care of my two kids under 4. I was so stressed from work and then walk in and have to be a mom in a split second after working a 12-hour day.”“The pandemic really took a toll on women, having to balance careers and kids at home, so there was a huge exit of women out of the workplace that still hasn't recovered.” “Is everything optimal? Is waiting until I have a significant risk factor, is that really the right time to start prevention? To me, I said no.”“I am super fortunate my parents are still alive but I've watched them age and I would prefer to age differently. They're doing okay but they're not the way I want to be at 78. That really sparked looking into how I can optimize myself now so that every ten years my risk factors stay zero.” “Keeping people out of the hospital, keeping people healthy, and keeping people off medication is not financially lucrative for a lot of industries which is unfortunate but it's the bottom line.” “We get so busy. You can spend your entire day from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed trying to live a longer life but there also can just be moments of joy, slowing down, looking up. We get in such a hurry all the time but smiling, saying hello to someone on a trail, and appreciating what's around us has significant health benefits.” Listen to the SuperAge podcast wherever you get your pods.Connect with Dr. Jennifer Wagner:LinkedInLiminal Collectivejen@weprosper.co

We've all had body issues at one time or another (I know I have!) We might not even be aware of them, but our critical self-talk can sometimes be louder than anything. Add in small uniforms, and constant demands on "image" in the cheer industry, and it's a recipe for our athletes to feel insecure about the way their bodies look. Jennifer Wagner is an author, a podcaster, and an educator for women to help the see their body is GOOD just as it is. Although she lost over 150 pounds, she still didn't feel comfortable and confident in her own skin. She had to do some different work to even begin feeling the body confidence we all hope for after such a transformation. Jennifer talks with me in this podcast episode about how we can begin to feel comfortable in our own skin, and give space for our athletes to do the same. I loved connecting with Jennifer Wagner during today's episode! She shares her very vulnerable story of losing half of her body weight and realizing that joy & contentment didn't come from losing the weight. Her road to body acceptance was one of trial and error, where she became aware that what is most important for loving the skin you're in is accepting where your body is right NOW. Instead of trying to attain a future version of you, she shares how we can focus on how good our bodies are in this present moment. That appreciation leads to body acceptance and love without limitations. Enjoy her encouraging spirit and transformative story, AND hear all about her new book coming out in January 2022! Led by Jennifer Wagner, CarbonCure Technologies is deploying carbon sequestration retrofit technology for existing concrete plants as it aims to ultimately reduce 500 megatons of CO2 annually. Below are two excerpts from the podcast. "We are one of the fastest-growing companies in the carbon removal industry. We offer a retrofit technology for concrete manufacturers that enables the production of the same reliable, durable concrete but with a reduced carbon footprint. Our solution is unique for its scalability and immediacy. There are many great carbon reduction strategies for an industry that require huge capital expenditures and long timelines for implementation, but we aim to make an impact more quickly and economically. Our solution works with existing infrastructure and regulations and can be installed in a single working day, without disrupting operations." "I am a chemist by training. After completing my undergraduate degree in Montreal, I continued to graduate school where I learned that I did not particularly enjoy lab work. After a particular presentation, I was told by a professor that he did not like the scientific aspect of my presentation, but if I were selling him something, he would buy it. This partially motivated me to pursue an MBA (chuckling). Through conversations with peers, I met CarbonCure's founder founder Rob Niven who had a consultancy company and was beginning to launch what would become CarbonCure at the time. The rest is history." RUN This week we talk about running groups. Support, community, and friendship around goals can be an important part of being able to achieve them. Running groups, whether you get virtual support or in-person encouragement can be a key part of pushing forward, especially in challenging times. There are several running groups on Facebook that we belong to and gain so much from. The online community is so strong. Here are some positive examples of groups we are fortunate to be a part of and talk about this week: I Love to RUN Community Runcation Nation The Extra Mile Podcast Group Be Our Guest Lizards We are also lucky enough to have an in-person running group in our town. The Cape Coral Running Group is following all the safety guidelines to be able to meet in person. Their runs are most times on Sunday mornings and they welcome anyone at any fitness level, even walkers like Aimee will be when she starts back to her run-walk-run. We wanted to feature a member of the group and share her journey to provide inspiration, support, and encouragement for anyone in the Runcation Nation that is thinking about trying to join one but may be hesitant to do so. Jennifer Wagner was kind enough to talk to us about her running journey and how the group supports her. Maybe her experience will encourage you, when you can safely of course, to explore your local running groups and give them a try. EAT We got requests for great snacks that we eat on a regular basis when we are training or just need something great, healthy, and filling. Our go-to: hummus. This week we talk about the recipe and all the different ways we incorporate hummus into our diet. Chickpea Hummus Ingredients: 1 Pound (16oz) of Dried Chickpeas 1/2 Cup fo Tahini 2 Tablespoons of Cumin 8 Garlic Cloves Juice of 3 Lemons Directions: We cooked the chickpeas in the instant pot, covering them with water for an hour and let them cool for an hour after. Then we drained them and combined them in the blender with the other ingredients. Blend well to the desired consistency. Store in sealed refrigerator-safe container for the week. Serving Suggestions: Crudités Platter Hummus Toast (We top with walnuts and sriracha) Stuffed Mushrooms DRINK This week we try a drink that is a bit out of the ordinary. The Green Juice Martini was featured on Guy’s Ranch Kitchen. This drink is full of green veggies like cucumber, kale, and celery plus green apples and lemon juice. The recipe calls for parsley, which is typically a flavor that we are not fans of, but thought we should give this a try. The featured spirit in this drink is gin, although we wondered if a different spirit would impact the flavor of the beverage or if the green juice on its own would be tasty. So, we venture into the uncharted territory to see if this is a winner of a beverage. THAT’S A WRAP! - Here’s hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! This week on CounterSpin: The backlash was immediate and strong against the so-called Religious Freedom Restoration Act just passed in Indiana. The law's proponents, including Gov. Mike Pence, say it's just intended to “open a door” to conversations about how people can express religious beliefs. Legal scholars and rights advocates say that the law as originally written actually invites conflict and sanctions discrimination, particularly against LGBT people. The scores of organizations saying they will reconsider doing business with and in Indiana seem to know who they believe. What can journalists do to shed light on this story without resorting to a “some say, others differ” approach? We'll hear from Jennifer Wagner from the group Freedom Indiana on that. Also on the show (and speaking of backlash): The Internet and Twitterverse made short work of lambasting entertainment-industry outlet Deadline for a piece that legitimized the idea that the presence of a larger than usual number of people of color in broadcast TV series means “the pendulum might have swung a bit too far in the opposite direction”–that white actors, in other words, are now the ones being discriminated against. But the thesis and tone of that piece didn't come from nowhere, and denouncing the article doesn't erase the climate that produced it. We'll talk about Hollywood and race with Darnell Hunt, professor of sociology and director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African-American Studies at UCLA.
