This week's News: - Disney World is rebranding and changing it's Genie+ service, moving to Lightning Lane Multi Pass from July 24th. Individual Lightning Lane will also become Lightning Lane Single Pass with this change. The change will also allow the prebooking of these lightning lane passes up to a week before visiting for the entirety of the stay up to 14 days. It will be 7 days for Disney Resort guests, and 3 days for all other theme park visitors, which is a major perk for staying onsite. - Disney World has also opened Tiana's Bayou Adventure this weekend, after a few weeks of previews. Disney also released the Tiana's Bayou Adventure soundtrack across all major streaming platforms. Just search for "Music From Tiana's Bayou Adventure." - The movie Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is coming to Universal's Halloween Horror Nights this year in both Orlando and Hollywood. In their press release Universal said that visitors "will find themselves in the sinister world of the supernatural, from Ray's Occult Books shop to the Ghostbuster's new high-tech lab and containment facility to the dank New York City sewer system." - Hollywood has also announced another original IP house Monstruos 2: The Nightmares of Latin America. - Knott's Berry Farm reopened its Camp Snoopy land following the latest refurbishment of this 41-year-old children's land. - The Blue Man Group is coming back to Orlando, to perform as a new theatre at ICON Park on I-Drive. The act had been performing at Universal Orlando Resort up until the pandemic. - Universal have given details of a third party report into the economic impact of the Universal Great Britain theme Park development, stating that "a new Universal theme park resort on the site could generate £35.1 billion in net economic contribution for the UK during the construction period and first 20 years of operation. The project could generate £14.1 billion in net additional tax returns during that period" - Dutch theme park Efteling will add a 31st scene to its Fairytale Forest attraction - The Princess and the Pea. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and inspired by a sketch created by park founder Anton Pieck, this installation will be placed between the Troll King and Mother Holle's well, on the forest's edge and behind the new Efteling Grand Hotel. - Six Flags Magic Mountain and Great Adventure have announced a series of IPs for their Halloween event Fright Fest Extreme, with The Conjuring Universe (The Conjuring, Annabelle and The Nun), Saw, Trick ‘r Treat, Stranger Things and Army of the Dead. Magic Mountain are also getting Texas Chainsaw Massacre exclusively. - Finally, The U.S. Department of Justice has approved the merger of Cedar Fair and Six Flags ahead of the planned start of joint operations on July 1st.

Everything considered, the cost of Genie+ and the Individual Lightning Lane was a hard decision for us to make the first day, especially when you consider how much we spent on tickets and passes already, but to ride the newest rides with little to no wait, it was worth it to us. By no means am I saying that it would make sense for anyone else to do so, but we have our priorities straight and our bills paid. I made a TicTok of the Family Guy singing "I have $13,000 in credit card debt.... oh look, it's Boba Fett" because it's funny, not that debt is funny... just check it out. Disney World Moderate Resorts, But “Plus” It Last week, we started talking about how to “plus” your stay at a Walt Disney World Deluxe Resort. Plussing is a term used by Disney to mean taking something great, and making it even more betterer.  This week, we're going to continue the conversation and up the challenge a little bit. Let's look at a Moderate level resort, and talk about about ways you plus your vacation to make it feel a little more Deluxe, while staying within a more “middle of the road” budget.  Conversation topics include: Hotels- which Moderate hotels give the most “deluxe feeling” stay, or a little more bang for your buck as far as luxury, amenities, and activities? How to to plus the hotel stay- upgraded room categories, activities outside the theme parks you can book that fit within a more moderate budget, great restaurants that fit a moderate budget but still deliver Experiences inside the theme parks- less expensive tours, other special experiences, splurge on Individual Lightning Lane attractions, etc.   As always, a huge thank you to our sponsor, Key to the World Travel. News We were starting to get worried that the popular Star Wars Nite would not happen this year since Disney hadn't announced anything and May 4th is coming up quick! Well, last week they finally announced TWO Disneyland After Dark Nies coming to Disneyland. Disneyland After Dark: Throwback Nite will celebrate the 50's and 60's, with music and entertainment that will pay tribute to Disneyland's first 10 years. "Fantasy in the Sky" fireworks will be performed, classic dancing, treats from the early days of Disneyland, and more! For Star Wars Nite, "Star Wars: Celebrate the Nite" fireworks will perform, the March of the First Order returns, a Lightsaber instructional demonstration and more will be happening. Starting today when this podcast posts, there will no longer be a virtual queue for the attraction. Wait no longer, the Mansion is back! There was even an upgrade to the show that was installed over the transition and has mysteriously disappeared since. Construction has been progressing slowly on the new bridge, reminiscent of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransico, but not much else. There will be a meet and greet area with Baymax, a floating wind turbine to power the area (fictionally, of course) and will be open to guests this summer! - https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2023/02/step-into-san-fransokyo-square-at-disney-california-adventure-park-beginning-summer-2023/ The Mint Julep Bar, along with the French Market is closed to be transformed into Tiana's Palace, so where can you get the tasty beignets and Mint Juleps? Over near the Pirates entrance is the Royal Street Veranda where the iconic New Orleans Square treats are for sale. Once Tiana's Palace reopens, the items will return to the old locations. - https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/02/17/a-disney-restaurant-closed-heres-where-to-get-mickey-beignets-now/ A new sipper has arrived in Avengers Campus at Pym Test Kitchen. The Ooze Cauldron Sipper is inspired by the new Ant Man and the Wasp movie. The sipper appears to be able to be held by the handle on the top, or carried with the strap over your shoulder. Guests can pick one up for $27.97 and it comes filled with Quantum Ooze. - https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/02/17/disneys-new-souvenir-cup-comes-with-a-shocking-price-tag/ Registration is now closed for the runDisney events for Disneyland that is returning next year. One difference is that you currently can't use MagicMobile for your room key. However, there is another feature within the MDE app that allows you to unlock your room door with the app. MagicBands MagicBands have functionality like the Key to the World Cards, but they also have a long range RFID system for capturing ride photos and linking them directly into your account. What I've learned is that the long range RFID requires a battery and that it will go out after a couple of years, but the short range RFID – for things like entering the parks as your park ticket and so forth, does not require a battery and so that part of your MagicBand will still work. Key to the World Cards A Free alternative to using your phone or buying a MagicBand. Here is what you can do with Key to the World Cards: Unlock your Disney Resort hotel room door Enter theme parks (with linked valid theme park admission and park reservation) Connect Disney PhotoPass images to your account Gain access to virtual queues (currently in use for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind) Redeem Lightning Lane ride reservations booked via Genie+ or the a la carte purchase option Charge to your Disney Resort hotel folio during your stay MagicBand Plus The MagicBand Plus really has two sides to it, the original MagicBand side that works the same as the original MagicBands, even if the battery is run down, and the “Plus” side that incorporates all of the additional features and requires your battery to be charged in order to access them. That includes the special effects (such as for the 50th Anniversary Statues), minigames, interaction with the shows, and so forth. If the battery runs out, those won't work but the original MagicBand features will still work. What's it Like to Visit Walt Disney World Right Now?Walt Disney World is pretty much back to normal in many ways. Masks are a thing of the past. In fact, we felt like the only guests wearing masks at all. We still required a negative Covid test to board a plane home, so we had to be extra careful (although this mandate for Canada is set to expire on April 1, 2022). It's very rare to see a mask on guests at Walt Disney World, except on monorails and buses, where they are still required (although we feel that this mandate won't be here for much longer. As Walt Disney World continues to emerge from the pandemic, there are still some things that are catching up. For example, there are not boats running from Disney's Contemporary Resort. This is because Disney World lost a large number of boat captains over the pandemic and they are currently trying to hire and train new captains as quickly as possible. On a related note, we were told that the SeaRaycer mini speedboats would not be back. Apparently, the boats sat around for too long over the pandemic and simply got gummed up and required too much service to make the fleet worth keeping. We don't believe they will be replaced based on our discussions with Disney Cast Members. Is Lightning Lane Better than FastPass+?In short, no.Disney's Genie + and Lightning Lane make visiting the parks at Walt Disney World much more challenging and frustrating versus previous methods of FastPass and FastPass+. We share full details in the episode, along with some tips and tricks for how to make the most of the current Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane.Disney World Rides and Attractions Continue to Experience DowntimeConsistent with what we had been hearing before this visit, many Disney rides and attractions continue to experience more downtime than was previously "normal" for Walt Disney World. Once again, we believe that this is due to staffing challenges and hopefully this will be remedied once Walt Disney World returns to more robust Cast Member staffing levels. This was particularly noticeable on things like the Disney Vacation Club Moonlight Magic Special Event. When you only have three hours in a park (in this case, Epcot), having Ratatouille down and Spaceship Earth down and Frozen Ever After experiencing issues etc., it's not a good thing. It led to longer lines at the few attractions that were open and overall was a poor experience as a result. In other Disney Travel News...Connections Café Will Be the New Home of Starbucks at EPCOTThis spring, Connections Café will become the new home of Starbucks at EPCOT. Like other Starbucks locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort, this Starbucks will be designed to fit the theme of its surroundings. To make way for Starbucks to move to its new location in World Celebration, Traveler's Café in World Showcase will close this spring.  Facemask Requirement Dropped for Disney SkylinerAs of March 16, face coverings are now optional for fully vaccinated guests on the Disney Skyliner. Face coverings will also be optional for fully vaccinated guests on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. At this time, face coverings remain required by all Guests (ages 2 and up) on monorails and Disney buses.Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. Source: Disney World website Return Dates Announced for Nighttime Entertainment at Disneyland Resort On April 22, 2022, the “Main Street Electrical Parade” and “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular will return to Disneyland park, and “World of Color” will return to Disney California Adventure park. “Fantasmic!” is preparing for its return to Disneyland park on May 28, 2022. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the “Main Street Electrical Parade”, this nighttime spectacular will return with an all-new, enchanted grand finale that celebrates the theme of togetherness. This universal theme is reflected in the creative concept of the grand finale sequence. Inspired by both the original design of classic “Main Street Electrical Parade” floats and Disney Legend Mary Blair's iconic art style on “it's a small world,” the new grand finale brings to life more than a dozen Disney Animation and Pixar stories. These stories will be interpreted in thousands of sparkling lights and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sound, with unique representations of beloved characters as animated dolls. As the new grand finale passes by, guests along each side of the parade route will see a different set of stylized scenes from classic and contemporary favorite stories such as “Encanto,” “The Jungle Book,” “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Aladdin,” “Coco,” “Mulan,” “Brave,” “The Princess and the Frog” and more.  Source: Disney Parks Blog New DVC Dining Discounts at Jellyrolls and Space 220 Eligible Disney Vacation Club members can now enjoy special discounts at the new Space 220 Restaurant in Epcot and at Jellyrolls piano bar on Disney's Boardwalk.   Save 15% on Lunch and Dinner at Space 220 Restaurant. Welcome foolish mortals!  This week we have Matt's review of the newish Disney Parks Genie, Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane.  Matt gives a good dose of info and Craig and Derek nod approvingly.  Perfect for a podcast.  We hope you all have had great start to the new year.  We wondered aloud how we could curb any enthusiasm for a new year and we decided what better way to ruin it than by getting together and recording.  Hope you enjoy.

Disneyland has released the Genie! Touted as the "next generation, new and improved, MaxPass" Disney Genie isn't a complete success. Our experts weigh in on what they liked about the Genie, what parts are in need of improvement, and if it is worth the paid upgrades.  On December 8, 2021, Disneyland released it's new service to help guests tour the parks more efficiently, skip the standby lines, and save time at Disneyland. While the first day was met with technical difficulties, by December 10th, the system was running pretty smooth. Our two experts and co-hosts were in the park December 10 - 11, 2021 to test it out, and they are sharing what they liked, some helpful tips, and ways they think the system needs to be improved. Plus, how many rides did they really get done utilizing Disney Genie+? Everything To Know About Disney Genie+ In this episode of the podcast, we cover our experiences utilizing Disney Genie, Genie+, and Individual Lightning Lane at Disneyland Resort. Before listening to this episode, you may want to check out our Disney Genie Preview, which gives a general overview of the system before it was released. Did you know that you can pre-purchase Disney Genie+ on your park ticket? Not only that but you can still save money when you use our link and special discounts through our ticket partners at Get Away Today. Not sure if you want to commit to Genie+ yet? We cover this in our podcast today. In This Episode: Disney Genie at Disneyland Resort - Real World Test In this episode, Becca, from This Crazy Adventure Called Life, and Leslie, from Trips with Tykes, talk about their experiences utilizing Disney Genie, Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes at Disneyland Resort. Both of us were in the parks, using these services, but with different touring styles, so that we could report back to you about how it worked out in different touring scenarios. In this episode we cover: A brief recap of Disney Genie, Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes (for more details be sure to check out the preview episode) What strategy we planned to use for our days in the parks Our thoughts with the Disney Genie interface within the Disneyland App Is Disney Genie (the free tool) as worthless as social media says Problems Disney needs to fix on the Disney Genie interface Becca's biggest pet peeve about the system - seriously, this is an easy fix Disney Paid Disney Genie+ to access Lightning Lanes Can you ride all Genie+ rides in one day How to utilize this with families Our strategies and tips for making the most out of Genie+ A secret hack to get multi-experience passes The issue with rides breaking down (though it does seem other people are saying this issue is now under control this week) Individual Lightning Lanes - Are they worth the cost What FREE option might be a better bet on some rides The Debate: Becca and Leslie discuss if Genie+ is worth the extra cost Our final ride count using the system Not going to lie, this episode is a long one and covers a TON of information so you may want to download it to your device for easy access again and again. The real test of Genie+ will be over the holiday break, and you can bet we will be keeping an eye on it, and Jessica will be in park to test it out, so we will update you when we come back in January. Which, this is the last episode until after the New Year, so have a wonderful holiday season and we will see you in 2022! News: This week, we got some more details about the Genie service coming to the parks soon. Over in Walt Disney World, the service will launch on October 19th. No date is set for Disneyland yet, but Disney says it will be announced soon. The Genie+ service, which is an additional cost, will be available at a number of attractions and works just like MaxPass from before the closure. Individual Lightning Lane selections will be an additional purchase on top of Genie+ and Lightning Lane, and will be priced from $7 to $15 per attraction, per guest. At this time, only Radiator Springs Racers, WEB Slingers, and Rise of the Resistance will be on the Lightning Lane+ service. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/10/08/disneyland-reveals-new-disney-genie-details-heres-how-the-itinerary-planning-app-works/ and https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/10/disney-genie-launching-at-walt-disney-world-resort/ At Disneyland, the following attractions will feature Lightning Lane as part of the Genie+ paid service. To be clear, these are part of the $20 per guest, per day Genie+ service, and not part of the Lightning Lane additional charge. Autopia, Big Thunder, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones, it's a small world, Matterhorn, Smuggler's Run, Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Star Tours. Over in DCA, Goofy's Sky School, Grizzly River Run, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout, Incredicoaster, Monsters, Inc., Soarin', and Midway Mania. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/10/08/disneyland-announces-22-rides-where-you-can-pay-to-skip-the-lines-heres-how/ and https://disneyland.disney.go.com/genie/ Guests that have been to Disney California Adventure this past week on rainy days may have been able to ride Web Slingers by waiting in a standby queue, instead of getting a boarding pass. Disneyland is switching to a standby queue on days when the attendance are lower for the new attraction. Guests who get a boarding group at the 7am window will have their boarding group honored, but there may not be a need for the noon boarding groups, and switch to standby only. The standby queue usually becomes active around 4-6pm. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/10/12/disneyland-pauses-web-slingers-virtual-queue-on-slow-days-and-switches-to-standby-line/ One of the big questions guests have been asking a lot recently is what is going on with the trams? The Orange County Register thinks that it is still related to the COVID-19 health and safety regulations that have been in place since the parks reopened. There were some posts online this week that said the trams were needing repairs after not being run for nearly a year and a half and maintenance teams are already overloaded. So, the real answer to when the trams come back is anyone's guess. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/10/11/when-will-disneyland-parking-lot-trams-return/ Joffrey's Coffee & Tea Company has finally made it to the west coast from Florida. The coffee stand that sits at the entrance to Pixar Pier and Paradise Wharf was recently converted to a Joffrey's, along with adding mobile ordering and some food offerings. Breakfast offerings are abailable until 11am, with a burrito available after. A chia fruit salad, sugar cookie, chocolate chip cookie, and chocolate croissants are offered all day. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/10/photos-joffreys-coffee-tea-company-makes-disneyland-resort-debut-at-the-gourmet-coffee-stand-at-disney-california-adventure/ Disney+ has been an excellent source of information and entertainment about the parks since it launched in 2019. A new movie, which will focus on the creation of Disneyland, will be debuting on the service in the future. The movie will be written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, who worked on The Jungle Book 2 and Beauty and the Beast. David Gordon Green is set to direct. He worked on Halloween and Halloween Kills as the writer and director. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/10/movie-focusing-on-disneylands-creation-coming-to-disney/ The Disneyland Resort has been hiring quite a few new cast members recently, although not a lot with more than two legs! The Circle D Ranch has recently received 5 new horses for Disneyland. The new horses are Dublin, a four-year-old Belgian and Percheron cross, Champ and his half brother Chip, who are 5 years-old and are Clydesdales. Lily is 5 years-old, with no breed mentioned. Finally, there is Pumpkin, who is one-and-a-half years old, and is a Percheron. The training to get horses from the ranch to Disneyland can take from 6 months to a year, depending on the horse. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/10/meet-the-new-disneyland-horses-at-circle-d-ranch/ After three long years, the current Disneyland Ambassadors Justin and Rafa, who would normally have held the position for two years, but because of COVID, their term was extended to three years, will retire to other positions in the parks. The new 2022-223 Ambassadors were announced last week, making their titles official. Mark is currently a stage manager in Disney California Adventure, starting with the company back in 2013. Nataly is a guest relations VIP hostess, starting with the company back in 2010. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/10/meet-the-next-disneyland-resort-ambassador-team/ Weeklyteers who are like Tage and love building models of Disneyland, there is a new 3D model book coming out soon! “Build Your Own Disneyland Park: Press Out 3D Model is now available for preorder on Amazon for $14.99.
